Please advise one of the Sidespersons if you would like Communion brought to you in the pew.

If necessary, you are welcome to sit for those parts of the liturgy when it is normal to stand.

REFLECTION In word and deed and character, Jesus shows us God. In that revelation, Jesus assures us that we have a safe place with God. That promise remains secure in times of joyous presence and of troubled absence.

COLLECT OF THE DAY

Everliving God, whose Son Jesus Christ is the way, the truth, and the life: give us grace to love one another, to follow in the way of his commandments, and to share his risen life; who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

FIRST READING

A reading from The Acts of the Apostles 7:55–60

Filled with the Holy Spirit, Stephen gazed into heaven and saw the glory of God and Jesus standing at the right hand of God. ‘Look,’ he said, ‘I see the heavens opened and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!’ But they covered their ears, and with a loud shout all rushed together against him. Then they dragged him out of the city and began to stone him; and the witnesses laid their coats at the feet of a young man named Saul. While they were stoning Stephen, he prayed, ‘Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.’ Then he knelt down and cried out in a loud voice, ‘Lord, do not hold this sin against them.’ When he had said this, he died.

A short silence is observed.

Reader For the Word of the Lord, All Thanks be to God.

PSALM 31:1–5, 17–18

At the 7:45am Eucharist the Psalm is recited antiphonally, a long pause being observed at the colon. At the 9:00am Eucharist the following antiphon and setting of the Psalm is used. At the 11:00am Eucharist a Book of Common Prayer setting of the Psalm is sung by the choir.

To you, Lord, have I come for shelter :

let me never be put to shame.

O deliver me in your righteousness :

incline your ear to me and be swift to save me.

Be for me a rock of refuge, a fortress to defend me :

for you are my high rock and my stronghold.

Lead me and guide me for your name’s sake :

bring me out of the net that they have secretly laid for me,

for you are my strength.

Into your hands I commit my spirit :

you will redeem me, O Lord God of truth.

All my days are in your hand :

O deliver me from the power of my enemies and from my persecutors.

Make your face to shine upon your servant :

and save me for your mercy’s sake. Response

SECOND READING

A reading from the First Letter of Peter 2:11–25

Beloved, I urge you as aliens and exiles to abstain from the desires of the flesh that wage war against the soul. Conduct yourselves honourably among the Gentiles, so that, though they malign you as evildoers, they may see your honourable deeds and glorify God when he comes to judge.

For the Lord’s sake accept the authority of every human institution, whether of the emperor as supreme, or of governors, as sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to praise those who do right. For it is God’s will that by doing right you should silence the ignorance of the foolish. As servants of God, live as free people, yet do not use your freedom as a pretext for evil. Honour everyone. Love the family of believers. Fear God. Honour the emperor.

Slaves, accept the authority of your masters with all deference, not only those who are kind and gentle but also those who are harsh. For it is to your credit if, being aware of God, you endure pain while suffering unjustly. If you endure when you are beaten for doing wrong, where is the credit in that? But if you endure when you do right and suffer for it, you have God’s approval. For to this you have been called, because Christ also suffered for you, leaving you an example, so that you should follow in his steps. ‘He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in his mouth.’ When he was abused, he did not return abuse; when he suffered, he did not threaten; but he entrusted himself to the one who judges justly. He himself bore our sins in his body on the cross, so that, free from sins, we might live for righteousness; by his wounds you have been healed. For you were going astray like sheep, but now you have returned to the shepherd and guardian of your souls.

A short silence is observed.

We will now sing the Gradual Hymn No. 464.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION

Please remain standing and turn to face the Gospel reader.

Reader/All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

Cantor I am the way, the truth, and the life, says the Lord; no one comes to the Father, except through me. Alleluia!

All Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!

GOSPEL READING JOHN 14:1–14

Deacon A reading from the Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ, according to St John.

All Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

Jesus said to his disciples, ‘Do not let your hearts be troubled. Believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house there are many dwelling-places. If it were not so, would I have told you that I go to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and will take you to myself, so that where I am, there you may be also. And you know the way to the place where I am going.’ Thomas said to him, ‘Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?’ Jesus said to him, ‘I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. If you know me, you will know my Father also. From now on you do know him and have seen him.’

Philip said to him, ‘Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, “Show us the Father”? Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.’

Deacon For the Gospel of the Lord, All Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

COMMUNION

Baptised Christians from all traditions are welcome to receive Communion. All others are welcome to come forward to receive a blessing. Please move to the altar rail.

You are advised to take any valuables with you to Communion to ensure their security.

We also request that people not use the practice of ‘intinction’ at Communion (the practice of dipping the consecrated bread into the consecrated wine) as it increases the possibility of transmitting infection. If you are concerned about use of the common cup, it is acceptable for you to receive Communion in one kind (i.e. the bread only). Gluten-free wafers are available upon request.

PRAYERS FOR HEALING

The laying on of hands and anointing with prayers for healing, for yourself or on behalf of others, will be offered in the Chapel of the Holy Spirit after the 9:00am and 11:00am services.

alleluia! and for his flock deigned to die, alleluia!

O be joyful in the Lord, all ye lands, serve the Lord with gladness and come before his presence with a song. Be ye sure that the Lord he is God: it is he that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are his people, and the sheep of his pasture. O go your way into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise; be thankful unto him, and speak good of his Name. For the Lord is gracious and his truth endureth from generation to generation. His mercy is everlasting, for the Lord is gracious.

Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be: world without end. Amen.

I beheld her, beautiful as a dove, rising above the water-brooks; and her raiment was filled with perfume beyond all price.

Even as the springtime was she girded with rosebuds and lilies of the valley. Who is this that cometh up from the desert like a wreath of sweet smoke arising from frankincense and myrrh?

NOTICES COMING EVENTS AT ST JAMES’ AND OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS

CONGRATULATIONS We congratulate and send greetings to former parishioner, Paula Ginns, who celebrated her 90th birthday on 11 May. Paula is fondly remembered, especially by all associated with Kids@Church.

HOSPITALITY AT ST JAMES’ There is a tradition at St James’ of providing refreshments after many of our services, particularly our Sunday Eucharists. This is an important ministry which enables people from the different congregations at St James’ to mingle and have fellowship together. There are many volunteers who contribute to this ministry, but there is a need for more to join the post-9am teams. Each team consists of 4-6 people who are responsible for providing food (such as sandwiches, sausage rolls, slices, and fruit), putting it on trays before the service in the kitchen in the Crypt and then serving the food and tea or coffee after the service. Each team looks after morning tea on one Sunday per month. The fourth Sunday urgently needs three more helpers. Please consider this important ministry and be aware that it is always possible to swap with others, if you cannot help out on a particular week. Please contact Beverley Simpson on 0407 705 040 for more details and if you can help.

AN INVITATION Parishioners are warmly invited to attend a service of celebration for the life of Barbara Golder (1915-2017) at 2:00pm on Friday 26 May at Warrawee Bowling Club, 1479 Pacific Highway, Warrawee. Light refreshments will be served, so please contact Barbara’s son, Jeff on 0411
