Dear Students and Families:

Welcome to the Walker Freshman High School and Walker High School Choir Department! The choirs

at WFHS and WHS have been building a reputation of excellence over almost two decades, and I

look forward to working with you as we continue to maintain and build on that tradition. I am here

because I truly believe in the important places both music and singing have in each of our lives.

The Choir Department Handbook and information your child has (or you have, if you are the student)

received on the first day of school has been refreshed for the Fall 2017 semester for your

convenience. Please read it thoroughly at the beginning of the semester and refer to it often. It will

include things you need to know to achieve success in your vocal music studies. Please keep it in a

safe place, as you and your student may be asked to reference it throughout the semester.

Also on the first day of school, your child has received a list of dates for optional and mandatory

functions and performances. Please reserve these dates by marking them on your calendar as soon

as possible! Failure to appear at a mandatory function or performance will result in failure of a major

grade in the course. Updates and any date changes will be given out as soon as they are known,

and you will be given ample notice if any of these dates change.

After you, the student and parent, have read the information in the handbook, please indicate so by

removing the following perforated forms from the back of the handbook, signing, and returning them

to me, along with the materials below (outlined in the syllabus), by Friday, August 18, 2017:

♫ Handbook Acknowledgement of Receipt and Contract

♫ Parent Support Team Letter

♫ Emergency Information Form

♫ white erasers (can be brick or pen top, but MUST be white, grey, or neon)

♫ traditional pencils (pack of at least 5; more than 5 allows bonus points or letter jacket points)

Student grades will reflect accordingly after the due date until all forms and materials are turned in to

the choir director.

There is a great deal of information in this packet for you to consider. Though you are expected to

read all of the information, most of it can be summarized in one sentence. If you distinguish yourself

by always trying to do the right thing at the right time, you will make a lasting positive impact on the

Doyle Choir Department. The presence and participation of each and EVERY one of you really IS that

important to the success of this group!!

Please feel free to contact me with any questions, comments, or concerns. My school email address

is [email protected]. This is the best way to contact me, since I work on two different campuses

each day. Also, our choir website can be accessed by going to www.dandwchoirs.weebly.com for

announcements, important documents, and additional contact information.

I am truly looking forward to working with you this year! Your talent and hard work can make this an

excellent year for all of us!

Sincerely,

Christina Lewis

Director of Choirs

WALKER FRESHMAN HIGH AND WALKER HIGH SCHOOLS

Choir Syllabus

Mrs. Christina B. Lewis, Director

[email protected]

Course Objectives:

The mission of the WFHS and WHS Choir Department for the student is to, through a balanced

repertoire of high quality music representing diverse genres and eras, learn the versatility to

perform music in a stylistically appropriate manner, with emphasis on accuracy, consistency,

and the highest potential quality. A high emphasis is placed on music literacy, as it is the back

bone of any learned musician. The student will also learn to craft intelligent critical appraisals

of performances to become a functional connoisseur of all types of music. Each student

enrolled in WFHS and WHS Choirs will be challenged to develop his/her abilities to their fullest

potential, while learning and enjoying quality musical literature and developing personal

qualities that grow through our quest for excellence together.

Materials:

3-ring binder with pockets and loose leaf paper: choir department will provide these items and

student must have them in class every day.

pencils: can be traditional or mechanical style – for personal use – NO PENS (white, neon, or

grey erasers on pencils are recommended)

white erasers: one pack – to be turned in – for erasing marks in music without damaging

original music

traditional pencils: one pack – to be turned in for use in the classroom – any color, any brand,

with white, neon, or grey eraser

FOR BONUS OR LETTER JACKET POINTS : You may bring in the following items for 5 bonus points

or 3 letter jacket points each.

- Germ-X brand hand sanitizer

- 2-pack of Expo markers

- box of Kleenex

- roll of paper towels

- extra erasers or pencils

- 3x5 index cards

- loose leaf paper

Note: All forms and materials are due by Friday, August 18, 2017. Each student will be issued a

black binder and sheet music. Students should write lightly in any original music they are

issued. Any markings that cannot be erased completely will be considered permanent

markings and will result in replacement fees ($1.50 per copy). Damages or loss of sheet music

or binder will also result in replacement fees. ($1.50 per copy, $3 per binder)

Course Fees:

A semester total of $30, which includes a class fee ($20) and a shirt fee ($10) is due by Friday,

August 18, 2017. This class fee helps to defray the cost of competition transportation and entry

fees, music, and accompanist fees for all concerts. If fee payment cannot be arranged

before the deadline above, the submission of a note from a parent or guardian stating when

and how (example: “We will be paying ___(student name)___’s fee in installments of [ ___ ] for

[ ___ ] weeks).” BY THE SAME DEADLINE is acceptable.

Page 4: CHOIR HANDBOOK - Weebly · ♫Choir Shirt – Purchased from Director for $10 (only if you did not purchase one last school year) with jeans or slacks, as instructed by choir director

Choir Uniforms:

The purchase of a uniform is also required. Please see the table below for details and prices. If

uniform payment cannot be arranged before the deadline above, the submission of a note

from a parent or guardian stating when and how (example: “We will be paying for

____(student name)____’s uniform in installments of [ ___ ] for [ ___ ] weeks).” BY THE SAME

DEADLINE is acceptable.

Details:

In addition to the choir shirt, choir members must provide and wear uniform parts as listed in

the chart above for formal concerts. Students are required to wear conservative hair and

makeup and avoid wearing perfume during performances, but are encouraged to wear

deodorant.

Students participating in the Walker High School Advanced Choir need to purchase the formal

uniform for $60. This fee (or a note from the parent stating how and when the fee will be paid)

is due by Friday, August 18, 2017. Both the choir shirt and formal uniform are a one-time

purchase and can be worn each year as long as they fit properly and are in good condition.

Page 5: CHOIR HANDBOOK - Weebly · ♫Choir Shirt – Purchased from Director for $10 (only if you did not purchase one last school year) with jeans or slacks, as instructed by choir director

5

All uniform items, especially shoes, are subject to approval by the director for the sake of

student safety and choir performance professionalism. Students who fail to adhere to the dress

code will not be allowed to perform and overall performance grade will be affected

according to the performance rubric included in this handbook.

Uniform Checklist:

A student’s choir uniform must meet the following criteria in order for the student to perform.

Students may receive a zero for a portion of their performance grade if the uniform does not

meet the requirements. Performance grades are worth 40% of the final average.

Choir shirt tucked into slacks

Pants and skirts hemmed to the top of the foot, not touching the floor

NO jewelry or large belt buckles, with the exception of non-sparkly, stud earrings

Black socks (or stockings) that reach at least to the calf

Black dress shoes (closed heel, closed toe, 2” or less), clean and not worn out

Conservative hairstyles that do not draw extra attention

NO perfume or cologne; but yes, definitely use deodorant

All attire neat and free of wrinkles

Choir Payments:

All payments must be placed in the director’s hand. Payments placed on the desk, piano, or

anywhere else instead of the director’s hand risk loss or misplacement of the payment. The

director will not be responsible for lost or misplaced payments on the part of the student.

Students should not leave before receiving a receipt from the director to confirm the

transaction. Receipts should be kept for the year as proof of payment. Please DO NOT leave

payments with other individuals. You may make payments in the office or online if you so wish.

Cash payments will only be accepted in an envelope with the student’s name, amount, and

what the payment is for. Acceptable forms of payment are cash, checks, or money orders. All

check and money order payments should be made to Walker Freshman High School. Include

two phone numbers at the top of the check, and the student’s name and “choir fees” in the

memo of all payments.

Students who are unable to pay their choir payments by Friday, August 18, 2017 should bring a

signed note from their parent or guardian stating when the payments will be completed. If a

payment plan needs to be arranged, this is an absolutely acceptable arrangement, as long

as the arrangement is honored. Simply indicate in the note how the fees will be paid out

through several payments. Students must be debt-free or must have made arrangements to

be so in order to be eligible to perform or participate in other school-related activities.

Fundraisers and Positive Promotion of the Choir:

Students are required to do their part in helping fund and promote their program. The choir

department receives no outside assistance and must generate its own money to operate the

organization. If you choose not to participate in a specific fundraising activity, you may be

required to bring a note from home stating why you cannot participate. Fundraisers include

but are not limited to: Music Department sweatshirt sale, Christmas poinsettia sale, cookie

dough sale, World’s Finest Chocolate, and Jambalaya Jam (fundraisers rotate from year to

year).

Page 6: CHOIR HANDBOOK - Weebly · ♫Choir Shirt – Purchased from Director for $10 (only if you did not purchase one last school year) with jeans or slacks, as instructed by choir director

Student Expectations:

Violation of any of the below expectations may result in a loss of participation points

(maximum of 10 per week), as outlined in the Supplemental Materials section of this

document. Think of them as “The 10 Golden Rules of Choir”.

1) Students are expected to treat the instructors and each other with utmost respect. Singing is

a very personal and often vulnerable task. Teasing, laughing at, or insulting another student or

the teacher will not be tolerated.

2) Each student should be in their seat prepared to begin rehearsal when the bell rings.

Tardiness causes you to miss a portion of warm-up, limiting your ability to get the most out of

each class, as well as limiting your daily grade for the day. Class is dismissed by the choir

director, not the school bell.

3) No books, gym bags, purses, etc. will be allowed at your seat. Leave all personal items at

the side of the room, and turn off “noise makers” (watches, cell phones, etc.) before moving

to your seat.

4) Each student must have their folder with music and a pencil in hand during every rehearsal.

A pencil in a book bag across the room, or a folder with music at home is insufficient. Expect

periodic “pencil and music checks”.

5) The student remains personally responsible for the condition of the choir folder and music

once distributed. Report damage to or problems with music to the choir librarians as soon as

possible.

6) Students are expected to remain actively engaged in the rehearsal at all times. There is

always room for improvement in individual performance. Hard work is expected; it is not an

option. Students are required to participate properly, even if they do not feel well. Students

who are ill, or otherwise unable to actively participate in singing, must notify the director

before rehearsal begins. Students unable to sing are expected to remain focused on the

music during class.

7) Upon receiving music, each student is expected to write their name on the outside cover

and number all measures, beginning with the first full measure, using a pencil only. Students

should make marks in their music as instructed by the director. Music marking is an ongoing

student requirement to individually and collectively improve the music making process.

8) Students are responsible for the maintenance of their choir room. Except for bottled water,

absolutely NO FOOD, DRINK, or GUM is permitted during rehearsal. When rehearsal is

completed, put all supplies away, throw away trash, and take all personal items with you as

you leave.

9) Choir students are expected to be model citizens in and out of the choir room.

10) STAY INFORMED!!! Listen in class, read the board daily for announcements, check the

calendar in the syllabus, or ask your choir officers or section leaders if you are unsure of

something. The more involved you are, the more fun choir can become.

Page 7: CHOIR HANDBOOK - Weebly · ♫Choir Shirt – Purchased from Director for $10 (only if you did not purchase one last school year) with jeans or slacks, as instructed by choir director

7

Class Attendance:

Class attendance is extremely important! Each day is a building block upon the previous day.

We are a team. When one student is not present mentally or physically, then the entire group

is not present. I will not be keeping track of who needs to make up work upon his/her return.

Make-up work is solely the responsibility of the student, not the teacher. Please see me

privately if you need to discuss make-up assignments. An excused absence can absolutely be

made up for grading purposes but the rehearsal missed and mastery gained cannot be

recaptured, and hinders the progress of the ensemble as a whole.

Grades:

Grades are NOT based on raw talent.

Grades will be based upon the contribution a student makes to the success of the group:

attitude, behavior, class and concert attendance, vocal progress, and how hard one is willing

to work for the excellence of our choir. Grade categories will be weighted as follows:

Daily Participation, Written and Oral Quizzes and Exams: 45%

Performances/Performance-related Rehearsals: 40%

Semester Final Exam (Proficiency Exam): 15%

Daily rehearsal grades – Students can earn up to 10 points a week for proper participation in

rehearsal. This includes being on time to class, having all materials, and, most of all,

participating fully in rehearsals.

As a general policy, grades will not be discussed in front of peers in class. For discussions

pertaining to grades, please see me privately (in a one-on-one setting, not as a group

discussion, can be during class as per director’s discretion) to resolve any issues. Any

gradebook issues brought to the director should be done so in a respectful, school-

appropriate, professional manner. Any issue that has not been satisfactorily resolved in class

may be done so through parent-teacher communication, either by email or phone.

Homework:

There are two types of homework: written assignments and practicing/reviewing material

learned in class. Students occasionally receive written assignments to be completed at home.

These reinforce what is being learned in class.

The voice, like any other instrument, must be perfected with practice. Students are expected

to review daily the information presented in class. This includes practicing warm-ups and songs

we may be singing in class outside of the classroom setting.

Performance Participation:

Attendance at ALL performances and performance-related rehearsals during school and

outside of school is mandatory, and all performances and performance-related rehearsals are

graded. Note: As per school policy, students must be present at school for two class periods

during the day of the performance to be eligible to participate in an after-school

performance or rehearsal, unless the after-school performance or rehearsal sates falls on the

same day as a school-related absence.

All performance dates are provided early in the semester so that conflicts may be avoided.

Page 8: CHOIR HANDBOOK - Weebly · ♫Choir Shirt – Purchased from Director for $10 (only if you did not purchase one last school year) with jeans or slacks, as instructed by choir director

8

Students will receive full credit for arriving on time, participating properly, having appropriate

performance etiquette, and staying through the entire performance or rehearsal. Students will

lose five points for each minute they are late and points will be deducted for improper

participation or inappropriate audience behavior. Performances off-campus are considered

an extension of the classroom and all school rules will still apply, including cell phone policies.

Performance Absences and Performance-Related Rehearsal Absences:

Students who miss a performance/performance-related rehearsal must bring a signed note

from their doctor or parent/guardian stating the reason for the absence. NO alternate

assignments will be given to allow students to earn the performance points for unexcused

absences. Please see the description below for definitions of excused and unexcused

absences.

Absences will be excused by the director on a case-by-case basis.

Excused absences include illness, death in the family, other emergency situations, and pre-

arranged absences (for example, a conflict with another school activity or other activity

approved by me) where a direct parent/guardian communication (email or phone call) is

received at least two weeks PRIOR to the performance or rehearsal. Conflicts presented to me

DURING the week of a performance WILL NOT BE EXCUSED unless it is an emergency situation

as described above.

Student jobs, babysitting, going out of town, lack of ride, and being absent from school are

problems that can be solved or worked around and therefore are not excused absences for a

performance or performance-related rehearsal. You are given the choir calendar in advance

so these things may be avoided ahead of time. Students who have an unexcused absence

from a performance or performance-related rehearsal are not eligible for a make-up

assignment and will receive zero points for the performance.

Make-Up for an Excused Performance/Performance-Related Rehearsal Absence:

Making up an EXCUSED absence from major performances and performance-related

rehearsals, including the Fall Concert, Veteran’s Day Program, Christmas Concert, Pre-Festival

Concert, Choir Festival (District or State), or Jambalaya Jam, will require the completion of the

supplemental make-up assignment below. Students must fill out the MAKE-UP ASSIGMENT

REQUEST FORM in the “Supplemental Materials and Forms” section of the handbook.

Parent Support Team (check all that apply)

The choir is always in need of support by parents, guardians, and outside supporters. As the director

of choirs, I need and appreciate help from parents. There are three main areas in which I see a

critical need and could use some help. One area is promotion of the choir. We would like a team

who would be willing to put articles in the local paper about the choir and any choir student who

earns recognition. The program needs anything we can do to get the word out about how great our

program is. The second area is fundraising. If you can help organize product when it arrives or help

promote fundraisers as they occur, please let me know. The third area is chaperoning when we take

off-campus, performance-based trips.

Please fill out the bottom of this form indication your area of availability. Even if you are not able to

volunteer at this time, please indicate such and return this form with your child. Once I receive all of

the forms, I will create a contact list so that everyone on the team can contact each other. I will send

the list home with all students whose parents have volunteered. If you cannot volunteer at this time,

you do not need to fill out the contact information on this form. However, your support is still very

much appreciated. Thank you!

___ Yes! I will be able to help chaperone this semester.
