Who is a child? A “child” is not

necessarilymarked by a fixed age.

According to the scientists,it is impossible to determine the abilities and maturities of children by their calendar age.

The term child labour is used for employment of children below a certain age, which is considered illegal by law and custom.

IT IS WORK FOR CHILDREN THAT

HARMS THEM OR EXPLOITS THEM

IN SOMEWAY

(PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, MORALLY OR BY BLOCKING ACCESS TO EDUCATION).

WHAT IS CHILD LABOUR?

According to recent estimate of the International Labour Organisation (ILO), more than 120 million children between the ages of 5-14 are employed as full time labourers around the world. A good number of such children labour in the most hazardous and dangerous industries. In India itself, it is estimated that there are at least 44 million child labourers in the age group of 5-14.

Explosion of population.

Causes of child labour

One in every nine children aged 5 to 14 worldwide is exploited by child labour.

There are approximately 9 million children

involved in the unconditional worst forms of child labour.

Bangle Industry in India: The Cruel

Darkness Behind The Vibrant Hues

• Bangle is a type of ornament worn mostly by South Asian women in different style. It is most famous in India, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, and is worn in Bangladesh too. 

•  Firozabad in Uttar Pradesh is the largest producer of glass bangles in the world. 

Bangles red, blue, green and yellow are symbol of auspiciousness and sanctity. With their rainbow colours these bangles spread joy and happiness, but ironically the makers of these beautiful bangles live a miserable life.

There is a Dark side of the bangle industry. Child labour is used extensively in Sadar Bazar market of Firozabad. A child labourer works in bangle factory for 8 hours and manages to earn only 30 to 35 rupees a day. He has no time for studies and he does not have any other option.

• The rag-pickers are extremely poor, illiterate, and belong to rural immigrant families. Many commence their profession at the young age of five to eight years. Many of them never attend any school or have any formal education. Their families are in need of extra income from these young children.

• WHILE THESE CHILDREN ARE COLLECTING RAGS THEY ARE SUBJECTED TO CHEMICAL POISONS AND INFECTIONS. BECAUSE OF MALNUTRITION THEY SUFFER FROM RETARDED GROWTH AND ANEMIA. THEY ARE PRONE TO DISEASES LIKE TUBERCULOSIS AND CANCER DUE TO THEIR EXPOSURE TO HAZARDOUS MATERIALS.

• People celebrate Diwali delightfully by firing innumerable crackers. But can we spare a thought for those around 40,000 children employed in the crackers industry in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu, for whom the festival simply means more forced work?

• Even though the local employers union claim that there is no child labour, yet accidents and casualties in firecracker industry tell a different story.

• In July last year, an accident in a licensed unit, V.B.M. Fireworks, left three children dead.

The Childhood of human life is like a spring, as it marks the beginning of human life. It is full of joy, pleasure and play but ironically, these children work to support their families and themselves.

Children are future generation of our country. They have an equal right to education.

By implementing the International Regulation for prohibition of Child Labour, we make sure that they are given opportunities for healthy, happy and normal growth.

Save Childhood

Bachpan Bachao Andolan is an India-based movement campaigning for the rights of children. It has centred on eradicating child labour  and demanding the right to education for all children.

International regulation governing the prohibition of

child labour

The employment in work is harmful to their morals , health and is likely to hamper their normal development. It should be punishable by law. States should also set age limits below which the employment of child labour should be prohibited.

Regulation and prohibition act This was declared by the

parliament on 23rd December, 1986.

It includes Prohibition of employment of children in certain occupations and processes.

No child shall be employed or permitted to work in any of the occupations which are hazardous in nature.

Any person who employs any child shall be punished with imprisonment for a year.

In the Year 2013 , ILO marks the world day against child labour on the plight of child labourer. 12th june is observed as the world day against child labour, an opportunity to gain support of NGOs and ILO, social partners including schools, youth and women group as well as the media in campaign against child labour.

WORLD AGAINST CHILD LABOUR

In 1996, Mumbai launched CHILDLINE, the country's first toll-free tele-helpline for street children in distress. It operates in 255cities in 30 States and UTs through its network of partner organisations across India.

CHILDLINE 1098 SERVICE

• By the initiative of NCLP (National Child Labour Project) over 2,000 child labourers have been rescued, rehabilitated and offered primary education by the officials of labour department. The rescued children now hope that golden opportunities await them, once they complete their studies.

CHILD LABOUR SHOULD BE TOTALLY ABOLISHED, AS THE CHILDREN OF TODAY ARE THE HOPE OF TOMORROW.

LETS TAKE A PLEDGE OF NOT EXPLOITING CHILDREN BELOW THE AGE OF 14YRS IN ANY HAZARDOUS WORK THAT CAN HARM THEM PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, EMOTIONALLY OR SOCIALLY.

World revolves around the children. Children's future revolves around education.

There is a need to provide these children a life of dignity and opportunity to dare,

dream and do because the children are the future generation of any country . Public

awareness through print, audio and visual media, enforcement of law against child

labour, compulsory education for children upto 14yrs of age, will go a long way in eliminating child labour and making our

future generation strong. All we need is to get over our indifferent attitude towards

their plight. With a great sense of responsibility towards them, we should

support and help them.
