10 MAY 2012 TO ADVERTISE 773.336.8225

The question has been asked time and again:what exactly is the significance of the SinaiEvent? Our Patriarchs studied and taughtTorah centuries before the Torah was “given”to the Israelites on the holiday of Shavuot, and—according to Talmudic tradition—ourforefathers observed all the mitzvot as well.Yet the “giving of the Torah” at Mount Sinaiis considered perhaps the most decisivemoment in the history of our nation, a nationwhose storied history contains many seminalevents.

Actually, the key word is the giving of theTorah. Before that fateful sixth of Sivan, wewere privy to the wisdom of the Torah, but itdid not belong to us. We can compare theTorah to a magnificent palace: before the SinaiEvent we were given unlimited access to tourits rooms and enjoy its beautiful architectureand artwork; at Sinai we were handed the deedand keys to the property.

The Talmud relates a fascinating episodewhich powerfully illustrates this point. RabbiEliezer the Great disagreed with Rabbi Joshuaand the other sages of that generationregarding the susceptibility to impurity of acertain type of stove. Rabbi Eliezer vigorouslydefended his position, but to no avail—therabbis refused to accept his position. At onepoint, a Heavenly Voice reverberated in thestudy hall: “Why do you argue with RabbiEliezer? The halachah (final ruling) always

follows his opinion!” Rabbi Joshua then aroseand exclaimed, “The Torah is not in Heaven!”The Torah was given to us at Sinai, and thereinit is clearly stated that “the majority prevails.”Since the majority of the earthly sagesconcurred with Rabbi Joshua’s opinion, theopinion of supernal beings – indeed, theopinion of the Almighty Himself ! — isimmaterial. Amazingly, the halachah wasestablished according to the majorityopinion — and Rabbi Eliezer the Great wasexcommunicated for refusing to accept theruling!

This, however, does not completely explainthe significance of Shavuot. Does this holidayboil down to bragging rights? Does it reallymatter who “owns” the title to Torah? As longas we are permitted to study Torah, would itbe such a great cause of consternation if G‑dactually had a say in determining thehalachah?!

King Solomon likens the revelation at Sinaito our wedding day—the day G‑d chose usfrom amongst the nations and wedded us. Onthe occasion of His marriage, the groom, whowas (and remains) madly in love with Hisbride, could find no greater dowry to give thanthe Torah, His most precious possession, Hiscrown jewel, His joy and pride. Furthermore,He didn’t suffice with making this treasureavailable for our use; He lovingly gave this giftcompletely and unconditionally.

This is why Shavuot is so special. Itcommemorates the day when G‑d gave us themost precious jewel in his treasure house.“Fortunate are the people whose lot is thus!”

G‑d’s love for us drove Him to give us hismost precious possession. Now how do wereciprocate?

We have the two days of Shavuot tocontemplate the response to this question . . .

One of my favorite teachers of all time, arabbi, used to tell us, "If you want yourchildren to study Torah, then you should studyTorah; if you want them to give charity, letthem see you giving charity."

I am also reminded of a beautiful poem onthe wall of my pediatrician's office when I wasa little boy, entitled "Children Learn WhatThey Live." The simple truth it expressed wasvery powerful -- our children learn from ourbehavior, not from our lectures, from the waywe are, not from what we say.

So, if you want your kids to respect you, respect your kids. Model respect to them, byshowing respect to your spouse, to yourneighbors, to people different from you anddon't forget to show self-respect as well.

There are all kinds of ways to demonstraterespect to your children, in the little things and

in the big ones. Show them that you careabout their opinions, and that while you maynot always agree with them, their ideas havevalue. Always respect their dignity, their needfor space or privacy, and never belittle them,or laugh at them.

I cannot over-emphasize the importance ofrespectful discipline. When your children pushyour buttons, when you feel like you're losingit, it is then, at that precise moment that youneed to model a sense of calm. Bymaintaining your dignity, by not gettingpersonal, by not hitting or name-calling, youcommunicate the incredibly important twinmessages of love and respect.

In effect, you are saying through youractions: "Even though I am angry at you andeven if I am hurt, I will not hurt you. I loveyou."

Gaining Respect By Rabbi Dr. Jerry Lob

Page 15: Chicago Jewish Advertiser May 2012

[email protected] CJA 15

When you do something wrong, apologize, because this will build trust, and their respectfor you will grow.

Assertive parenting is not aggressiveparenting, and if your children see howcareful you are with their fragile souls, they willlearn to be careful of others. Assertiveparenting also means being firm and not beingafraid to disagree, set limits and provideappropriate negative consequences such astime out, grounding, and so on. Your childdoesn't have to agree with you, he/she justneeds to feel loved and respected.

The parental attitude discussed above beginswith the birth of your child. It is the attitudethat he/she is a separate entity, not anextension of the parent. It is not the child's jobto gratify the needs of the parent, to be thefulfillment of a father's unfulfilled dreams or amother's never realized wishes.

Judaism views the ideal parent-childrelationship as one of warmth and closenessas it is the primary vehicle for the transmissionof our traditions, values and laws.

The Talmud teaches us that thistransmission, representing the continuity ofour religion, is rooted in the joy and love of itspractitioners.

Yes, the Torah demands that the childrespect his/her parents, but it is the wiseparent who knows that forced respect is emptyand that true respect grows from within, in anenvironment of love, approval, and joy.

It is our job to help our children respect us,by being worthy of respect, by living lives thatwe are proud of and by connecting with ourkids in a deep, loving, spiritual, joyful way.

Dr. Lob is a clinical psychologist in privatepractice in Chicago, working with adults, adolescents, and families, for many years. He lectures and writes extensively on topicsrelating to psychology, relationships, parent-ing, education, and Jewish thought.

PET FOOD

Q. Are there any restrictions as to which foods Imay feed my pet?

A. Pets are not required to keep kosher (even ifthey feel like a full fledged member of the family!)and therefore they are permitted to eat non-kosherfood. However, there are certain non-kosher foodswhich we are not only forbidden from eating but weare even enjoined to not have any benefit/pleasurefrom them. Those foods may not be fed to a petbecause when one does so they – the owner – ishaving a forbidden benefit from the non-kosherfood. The lists of foods which have this stricterrestriction (known as assur b’hana’ah) include:•Milk and meat which were cooked together (see

below). •Chametzon Pesach (and on Erev Pesachafter a given

time in the morning).• Non-kosher wine or grape juice (according to

many opinions, seeShulchan Aruch& Rema YD123:1,Shach 108:25 & 124:71, Mishnah Berurah 467:33 andSha’ar HaTziun 467:57).

Within the first category (milk and meat cookedtogether) some of the details are that:• It is limited to beef, lamb, or goat meat (even if

they are not kosher), and does not apply to poultryor to non-kosher species (e.g. pork) (Shulchan AruchYD 87:1 & 3).• It includes most dairy products (e.g. whey, milk

powder, casein) but does not apply to lactose (meimeichalav – see Shulchan Aruch YD 87:8, 81:5 and Shach87:12).•The milk and meat must be cooked together, but

if they are merely blended together without heat themixture is non-kosher but may be fed to pets.

Accordingly, when choosing a pet food one mustbe sure that it does not contain any of theaforementioned items.

The cRc assists pet owners with this task by re-viewing the formulations of a number of pet foodsmade by Evanger’s (see their kosher certificate athttp://www.crcweb.org/LOC/Evangers.pdf) andapproving of their use for Pesach and year round. Many other pet foods are also acceptable for use byanyone who is familiar with food ingredients andhas the patience to review the ingredient panel.

WORCESTERSHIRE SAUCE

Q. I recently used a Worcestershire sauce on asteak. Afterward, I was looking at the bottle’singredients and saw that all the way at the end it says“Contains Anchovies”. I know that anchovies are atype of fish and I also know that the Gemara saysthat it is dangerous to eat meat (steak) and fish(anchovies) together. I wanted to know if you canshed some light on this before I write an angry emailto the people who certified this sauce as pareve.

A. It is true that one may not eat meat and fishtogether (Shulchan Aruch YD116:2) but in this case itis permitted because the hashgachah is vouching forthe fact that there is so little fish in the sauce that it ishalachically insignificant (batel b’shishim). [Pischei Teshuvah115:3 and Darchei Teshuvah 115:16 & 21 cite Poskimwho discuss the propriety of l’chatchilah relying onbitul b’shishim as relates to this specific halacha, and inaddition some consider Magen Avraham 173:1 as acontributing factor.]

You should however be aware that someWorcestershire sauces contain a more significantamount of anchovies. In those cases, the hashgachahwill insist that the sauces be labeled with the word“fish” alongside their logo so that kosher consumerswill know to not use the sauce together with meat.
