Coated PillsQ. It says on your website that onecan take any pill medication that isswallowed. Does that includecoated pills such as Advil?

A. Most pills which one swallowsare coated with a glaze, wax or shel-lac which makes the pills easier toswallow, and some of these coat-ings have some form of simplesugar (e.g. sucrose) mixed in tomake it even more pleasant to swal-low the pill. None of these ingre-dients pose a Pesach concern.Advil tablets are a good exampleof this, as the (inactive) ingredientpanel shows that they contain car-nauba wax, pharmaceutical glaze(i.e. shellac), and sucrose, and onewho swallows an Advil pill noticesthat they have a morepleasant/sweet taste than pillscoated with a non-sweetened coat-ing. Other pills are coated with sweet-eners which are Pesach sensitive(e.g. sorbitol) or which contain aflavor; such items would be listedas one of the inactive ingredients, and we would not recommendthose for Pesach.

Dental TapeQ. Is dental tape the same as den-tal floss?

A. Yes, as with dental floss, all den-tal tape is acceptable whether it isor isn’t waxed, as long as it isn’t fla-vored.

AlcoholQ.I see that some items I buy in

the pharmacy contain alcohol; doesthat mean they are or may bechametz?

A. The answer to this question de-pends on which type of “alcohol”one is discussing, as follows:Benzyl alcohol, methyl alcohol(a.k.a., methanol), isopropyl alco-hol and stearyl alcohol are notmade from chametz.Ethyl alcohol, a.k.a. ethanol, can bemade from chametz, and isoamylalcohol is often a byproduct ofwhisky. These may also appear onan ingredient panel as part of acompound such as ethyl acetate orisoamyl butyrate. Denatured alcohol, a.k.a. SD Alco-hol, is ethyl alcohol which has beenblended with other materials torender it not potable; there are dif-ferent opinions as to whether suchalcohol is forbidden on Pesach, andthe cRc position is that they shouldnot be used on Pesach unless theyare listed as chametz-free on a reli-able list of approved Pesach prod-ucts.

PerfumeQ. I’ve seen other publicationswhich say that all perfume is ac-ceptable for Pesach, but the cRcPassover Guide says that oneshouldn’t use ones which containalcohol. Who is correct?

A. The disagreement regardingperfume is based primarily onwhether denatured ethyl alcohol isor is not considered inedible. Formore on that issue, see the questionon “alcohol”.

The Seder is a place of learning and family, of songand holiness, lots of food, fun, and mitzvos, small chil-dren, big children, wise grandparents, laughter, and greatseriousness, even awe. It’s also about contradictions.

The symbols collide throughout the night. There aresymbols of celebration such as matzah and reclining, and symbols of pain such as maror (bitter herbs) andstrange dips that serve to remind us of the tears, cementand bricks of our slavery. One interpretation of themeaning of the “Four Questions” speaks to the duelingmessages. “Ma Nishtana Haleila Hazeh” – How are weto view this night? Is it matzah or maror? Celebrationor mourning, triumph or tragedy?

The Matzah itself is a paradox. This simple bread, holy for its very simplicity, is called “the bread of afflic-tion,” slave food, and yet it also evokes for us a memoryof the bread that had no time to rise in our rush to tastefreedom. Is matzah a symbol of suffering or G-d’s love?

So, is the emotion of the night honoring and remem-bering the sadness, or singing with hope and joy? Theanswer, of course, is both.

As children of Holocaust survivors, my sister and Iknew intuitively that while the Seder is firstly the story ofslavery in Egypt, redemption, and the birth or our na-tion, it is also about our own parents’ slavery and re-demption.

The Seder is a discussion of all of Jewish history. It’sa discussion about the 10 plagues, the splitting of thesea, standing as a nation and hearing G-d’s voice at Sinai, the manna in the desert, and the glory days of the holyTemples in our homeland. And it is also about exile, in-quisition, crusades, pogroms, the Holocaust, intifadas, and the incredible miracle of the survival of the Jewishpeople. And for our family, the incredible miracle ofour parents and grandmother. It is as much about ourthree grandparents who were not there, (for whom mysister and I were named) as about our grandmother whowas there, whose very existence was a gift. It’s about thedepths of despair and the determination to rebuild, withfaith and joy.

One of the most moving parts of the Seder centersaround the mitzvahs of eating matzah and maror. TheHaggadah directs one to recline when eating matzah, but

not when partaking of the bitter herbs. I rememberthinking many years ago that this business of recliningis like a stage direction for the appropriate emotion dur-ing a specific activity. Reclining, an indication of free-dom, is a behavioral expression of the emotion that weshould be feeling as we eat matzah. As a symbol matzahmay signify pain and joy, but tonight we are directed tofeel the joy of G-d’s loving intervention.

Maror, on the other hand, we are told, should be eatenwithout reclining, and so we hear the message that theemotion is sadness, honoring the pain, remembering theloss, feeling the bitterness.

Which brings us to the Hillel sandwich called Korech. It consists of two pieces of matzah and bitter herbs inthe middle. So how do we act now? Do we recline ornot? Matzah or maror? Sadness or joy?

Over the years the power of this moment has grownfor me, the moment when I once again look down at myHaggadah and see those words, “The sandwich is eatenwhile reclining.” Two small words that convey to us awisdom of a people, a wisdom that has been our na-tional secret and key to Jewish survival, Jewish vitality:While reclining. This is what we declare to G-d, and toour children, our families, friends, neighbors, and per-haps most importantly, to ourselves. As a people we havematzah times and maror times, times of great joy, timesof great tragedy. And as families or individuals we toohave matzah times and maror times. We don’t expect alife without hardship. This Seder sandwich is life. Andit is our whole history. So we will take this sandwichthat You, G-d, have given us and we will eat it with joy, while reclining. We eat the entire sandwich with joy be-cause the enveloping matzah provides the context oflove that allows us to swallow even the bitter parts withjoy. When we feel Your love we know You are our lov-ing Father, and we trust You, even when it hurts, evenwhen it is so painful.

This is how our grandparents and ancestors lived –with trust, with love, and with joy.

There were once two beggars whoused to go around begging to-gether. One was Jewish and the

other a gentile. As the night of Passover ap-proached, the Jewish beggar offered to helphis non-Jewish friend get invited to a seder(the festive Passover meal accompanied bymany commandments and rituals) and get agood meal. "Just put on some Jewish clothesand come with me to the synagogue. Every-one brings home poor guests for the seder. It's easy, you'll see."

The non-Jewish beggar happily agreed. Onthe first night of Passover they went to thesynagogue, and sure enough, both got invitedto different homes for the festive ceremony.

Hours later they met in a predeterminedplace in the local park. But to the amazementof the Jewish beggar, his friend was blazingmad.

"What did you do to me?" He shouted."You call that a meal? It was torture!! It wasawful! I'll pay you back for this--you'll see..."

"What do you mean? What happened?" theJew asked.

"What happened? As if you didn't know! You Jews are crazy--that's what happened!First we drank a glass of wine. I like wine, but on an empty stomach... My head startedspinning a bit but I figured that any second

we would begin the meal. The smell of thefood from the kitchen was great. Then we atea bit of parsley. Then they started talking, and talking, and talking. In Hebrew. All thetime I'm smiling and nodding my head as ifI understand what they're saying--like youtold me to--but my head is really swimmingand hurting from the wine and I'm dying ofhunger.

"The smell of the food from the kitchen ismaking me insane, but they don't bring it out.For two hours they don't bring anything out!Just talking, and more talking. Then, justwhat I needed.... another cup of wine! Thenwe get up, wash hands, sit back down and eatthis big wafer called matzah that tastes likenewspaper, leaning to the left (don't ask mewhy...). I started choking, almost threw up.And then finally they give me this lettuce, Itook a big bite and wham! My mouth was onfire. My throat! There was horseradish inside!Nothing to eat but horseradish! You guys arecrazy...

"Well, I just got up and left. Enough isenough!"

"Ah, I should have told you." replied theJew. "What a shame! After the bitter herbs isa glorious meal. You suffered so long; youshould have just held out for a few moreminutes...!"•

Oncethey got on the otherside, they blew up thebridge while theEgyptians were tryingto cross."

The father wasshocked. "Is that whatthe Rabbi taught you?"
