The Akra or the GS language is spoken by the people inhabiting the Gold-coast of Western Africa. Barth was a German pastor and missionary who published this series of “Bible Stories” (1845) which was translated into many different languages.

Second edition of the grammar, first 1864. The vocabularies, first published in Bangkok 1861, are here much enlarged. Louis Gabriel Aubaret (1825–94) commanded the French vessel Prégent on the expedition to Cochinchina in 1860. He was appointed the first French consul at Bangkok. Cordier BI 2297 & 774.

3 BESCHI , CONSTANZO GIUSEPPE: A Grammar of the High Dialect of the Tamil Language, termed Shen-Tamil: to which is Added an Introduction to Tamil Poetry. Library markings. Some leaves with small marginal wormholes (no text loss). Occasionally some light staining.Rare first printed edition, translated into English from the original Latin completed in manuscript form about 100 years earlier but not printed at that time. Beschi was born in Italy in 1680 but spent most of his life as a missionary in India. He was the founder of the Madura mission and became one of the earliest and most distinguished

pioneers in the field of Tamil studies. He composed several linguistic works but is perhaps best known as a Tamil poet. He produced a grammar of Low Tamil (the common dialect) in Latin which was printed at Tranquebar in 1728. The present grammar of Shen-Tamil (the high dialect) was composed the following year but for an unknown reason never printed. This English version was based on a collation of texts, transcriptions and copies. It remains a pioneering study of an ancient and complex language by a sensitive and meticulous scholar and a talented translator. The translator Benjamin Guy Babington was an English physician and Oriental scholar who spent about ten years in India. Vater p. 240.

Old ownership signature. Scarce first edition of this pioneering work to trace the common origin of the grammatical forms of Sanskrit, Greek, Latin and German. Concentrating on a historical analysis of the verb, he furnished the first trustworthy materials for a history of the languages compared. “He thereby established the science of comparative linguistics […] Bopp’s importance lies in the fact that he was no mere grammarian but considered philology to be an essential part of the history of civilization: out of their vocabulary he drew an accurate picture of the material and intellectual life of the earliest Indo-European people” (PMM). First scarce edition of the first Pali grammar to be pub-lished in Europe. Burnouf was a French orientalist who initiated the Buddhist studies in the west and Christian Lassen was a Norwegian-German orientalist appointed professor of Old Indian language and literature in Bonn. Vater p. 272.

6 CASTRÉN, MATTHIAS ALEXANDER: Elementa grammatices syrjaenae. Helsingfors, ex officina typographica heredum SimeliI, 1844. € 180Pp. (ii), viii, 166, (3). Uncut copy as issued in grey wrappers, some minor discolouration. Castrén, a Finnish renowned philologist who made several journeys to Siberia for linguistic and ethnographical studies. Between 1841 and 1843 he made a journey beyond the Ural as far as Obdorsk, and on his return he published this grammar of Syrjaenian (Komi Syrjaenian). Cat. Russica C 214. Vater p. 467.

A few leaves with some spotting. First edition. Castrén, renowned Finnish linguist, made several journeys to Siberia, Russia and Lapland for lin-guistic and ethnographical studies. His scientific works were published after his death by Schiefner supported by the Scientific Academy in Petersburg under the series title “Nordische reisen und Forschungen” (1853–62). Important work dealing with the Tungusic languages spoken in East-ern Siberia and Manchuria. Löwendahl Supplement 1786. Zaunmüller p. 125.

Contemporary marbled paper boards, recased and rebacked with brown cloth. Some leaves mend-ed with scotch tape on inner margins (pp. x–xi and 216–7). One leaf loose. The paper is brittle. First edition, rare. Constant Chounavel born and educated in France, arrived in Ceylon in 1852 where he lived and served until his death in 1923 in Borella. He worked as pastor and missionary

at Jaffna for about thirty years and in 1883 he moved to Colombo where he served as vicar general and pastor of the cathedral in Kotahena. He wrote a variety of books mainly in Singhalese. Not in Vater.

A scarce work about the Circassian (Tscheremissian) lan-guage by the renowned Finnish linguist Castrén who was a pioneer in the study of Arctic and Siberian Uralic and Altaic languages. Rare. Cat. Séraphin Couvreur, French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870. He spent the greater part of his life at the Jesuit residence at Sien-hsien, where he was professor at the Seminary. Séraphin Couvreur, French sinologist and Jesuit, came to China in 1870, and served for many years in Sien-hsien. He was the creator of the EFEO Chinese transcription method which was used in most of the French speaking world to transliterate Chinese until the middle of 20th century when it was replaced by Hanyu Pinyin. Publisher’s cloth, lightly rubbed, spine faded. First edition. Joseph Edkins, a British missionary and linguist, spent more than fifty years in China. He wrote extensively on the Chinese language and religions, especially Buddhism. He translated western scien tific works into Chinese and in 1880 he became a translator for the Chinese Imperial Maritime Customs. In this work he tries to show that the languages of Europe and Asia have a common origin by comparing the Chinese and Indo-European vocabulary. Rare. Cordier BS 1581. Löwen-dahl Supplement 1824. Otho Fabricius was a Danish missionary who lived in Greenland between the years 1768 and 1773. He was a student of another renowned missionary Paul Egede. Zakariás Gábrus (1794–1870) was an Armenian polymath, priest and teacher, and the most cultural figure of the Armenian community of Samosújvár, Transylvania.

Old ownership stamps on title. Some minor flaws; title page has one small loss at inner margin and about fifty pages affected at outer upper right corner by worming but no loss of text. Last two leaves dusty and chipped at edges of which one strengthened at lower margin (no loss). First scarce edition. Father Gonçalves produced several books for Portuguese students. This work “Arte China” provides a thorough and very practical introduction to many aspects of the Chinese language. The appendix is a comparative phonetic study of the pronunciation of Mandarin and Cantonese Chinese. The work was printed at the Collegio de San Jose at Macao by Portuguese priests on a press which had been lent to them in 1827 after the “Gazetta de Macao” had closed down. This primer includes alphabets, hymns, short texts, etc. Probably put together by Carl Hugo Hahn (1818–95), a German missionary who spent most of his life in Southern Africa. British Library has one work titled “Omahongie uokuleza Motyheren…” published in Gütersloh in 1861 but we haven’t been able to find any library copy of this work.

Amharic is the second most spoken Semitic language in the world, after Arabic, and is the official working language in Ethiopia. Julien Stanislas, one of the leading European scholars on China in the 19th century. A rare bilingual dictionary with transliteration of the Tatar words by Cyrillic type. The work is structured by subject, such as parts of the human body, family, professions, seasons, animals, plants, foods, colours, clothes, measures, etc. At end a brief grammar presenting the main rules of Russian and Tatar languages. Published in Kazan, capital of Russian Tatarstan, which became an important centre for Oriental studies in Russia. Religious and spiritual literature in local languages based on Cytilic type were printed here. No copies found in OCLC.

24 KOELLE , S IGISMUND WILHELM: Grammar of the Bornu or Kanuri Language. London, Church Mis-sionary House, Salisbury Square, 1854. € 750Pp. (iv), xx, 326. With engraved front of Ali Eisami Gazirma. Original blind stamped cloth, lightly rubbed. Partly with some minor staining.First edition. Koelle (1820–1902) was a German missionary and pioneer scholar of African languages who resided in Sierra Leone for about four years. His major work “Polyglot-ta African” (1854) initiated serious study of a large range of African languages by European scholars. The basis of this grammar was dictated to Koelle by his interpreter Ali Eis-ami Gazirma (Ali of Gazir). Ali was born in the late 1780’s in Gazir (province of Borno) and lived for 30 years in Free-town known as William Harding. He was then employed by Koelle to support his linguistic studies. The grammar consists of stories, fables, romances, historical sketches etc. Zaunmüller p. 219.

Uncut copy in contemporary boards, worn. Pre-served in a modern blue cloth box.

The first proper Persian dictionary to be published. Only preceded by Ravius’ Specimen lexici arabico-persico-latini (Lugd. Bat. 1645) and the Persian section by Golius in Castell’s Lexicon heptaglotton (London 1669). Includes an introduction mainly based on De Dieu. The dictionary entries are in Italian followed by translations into Latin, French and Persian respectively. Labrosse composed this work during a stay in the Levant between 1664 and 1679. He tried to have his work published in Paris without success but a few years later he arranged the printing himself in Amsterdam. Labrosse bought the small Arabic types used in this work at the Elzevier sale in 1681. The large Arabic types found on the title page and eight times within the text were cut by Guillaume Le Bé in Paris 1599. These types were used only occasionally in Paris until the end of the 18th century and it seems that this is the only time they were used out-side France (Smitskamp). Schwab 672. Smitskamp PO 345. De Lardizabal (1806–55) was a priest, writer and Spanish philologist. Not in Vater.

Text in French and Hausa in the version of the Arabic script known as “ajami”. With one large fold-ing coloured map: “Carte de l’Afrique septentrionale d’après les voyages & découvertes des principaux explorateurs qui ont pénétré dans le Sahara et le Soudan” (with some tears along folds). Marbled boards, red calf spine with title label, original printed wrappers with bound. A tiny wormhole running through the map and last few leaves. First French published dictionary of the Hausa language which is the major lingua franca of Western Africa. It has also been used as a trade language in Central Africa and western Sudan, particularly among Muslims. Zaunmüller 174.

Somewhat later brown cloth, hinges cracked, spine ends chipped. Internally fine. First edition.William Marsden, British historian, linguist, numismatist and pioneer of the scientific study of Indonesia. For eight years he resided in Bencoolen (Bangkhulu) in Sumatra where he studied the language and people. Back in England he was encouraged by Sir Joseph Banks and others of the Royal Society to prepare his collected material for publication. His comprehensive work “History of Sumatra” appeared in 1783 and in 1812 he published this grammar and a dictionary of the Malay language, which form the basis of all subsequent Sumatran linguistics. With one large folding plate showing the sounds of 5 dialects, namely: Peking, Nanking, Ki-ukiang, Tengchow and Weihien. The characters are printed in red, green, yellow, blue and black respectively. Original black cloth, expertly rebacked. Third edition (first 1892). Calvin Mateer died in Tsingtao in 1908 after 44 years of missionary work in China. He was devoted to teaching and produced several literary works. He founded the first 19th century Chinese Christian College; Tengchow College. Cordier 1705.

Tears to margins of some leaves, some staining and soiling.First edition of this important work on the ancient language Nahuatl spoken by the Central Mexican peoples, also known as Aztecs. Carlos de Tapia Zenteno was an ecclesiastical judge and chief professor of the Mexican language at the Royal University and Pontifical Seminary College. Later on he was appointed professor of the Nahuatl language at the Univer-sity of Mexico, and this work was published in connection with his appointment. Scarce. Palau 327485. Sabin 94353. Passeri (1694–1780) was Apostolic of Pesaro, antiquary to the Grand Duke of Florence and the foremost Etruscan scholar of his time. First edition of the first work dealing with the Oscan language. The second work about the Etruscan language was published by Amaduzzi, the director of the printing press at the Con-gregatio de Propaganda Fide in Rome. The Etruscan types were engraved by P. Bonarotius about 1726 and later given to the Propaganda Press. This work was first published by Amaduzzi in 1771 and is here in the second, corrected and enlarged edition. Cicognara 2620. First edition of the first Sanskrit grammar to be published in Europe. It is based on the manuscript grammar of the Jesuit Ernestus Hanxleden. Includes an alphabetical table listing: Granthamicum (used throughout the work), Indostanum and Nagaricum and a woodcut Telugu alphabet (Talinganicum). De Sacy 2929. Windich 20–21. The author, known by several names, was an Austrian Carmelite missionary and Orientalist who in 1774 came to Malabar in India as a missionary. He returned to Rome in 1789 and became private secretary to Cardinal Stefano Borgia, Secretary to the Propaganda Fide. He is known for being one of the first scholars to remark on the relationship between Indian and European languages.

The plates illustrate various Phoenician scripts, coins, inscriptions on monuments, etc. Gesenius, a German Orientalist and Biblical scholar, became mainly famous for his scientific method of studying biblical Hebrew based on comparison with other Semitic languages. Petrus Tru’o’ng Vinh-ky (1837–98), a renowned Vietnamese scholar who helped popularise the romanised script of the Vietnamese language called Quoc Ngu. He served in the French colonial regime as a linguist and translated many literary works into modern Vietnamese. Cordier BI 2298.

It is the first of its kind to use Roman characters to express the language in writing. The Khondi (or Kui) language is a South-Central Dravidian language spoken by the Khonds, hunter-gatherers living mainly in Odisha (Orissa). John MacDonald Smith was a major on the Madras Staff Corps and appointed special assistant of the Governor of Fort St. George at Gamjam in Orissa.

Original blue cloth, worn and soiled, back cover almost detached. Housed in a specially made cloth box. Rare.Originally compiled by Tatsunosuke in 1862 (200 printed copies) and here revised by Kamenoskay. This is probably a second issue of the second edition. Cordier gives the date 1866 and the preface is also dated 1866. This dictionary is the first substantial English-Japanese vocabulary, the first edition of which predates Hepburn’s Japanese-English dic-tionary by five years. According to the preface the first edi-tion contained a number of errors regarding the Japanese and Chinese names of animals, plants and minerals that needed to be corrected. This has been done in the second edition with the assistance of Yanagawa Sunsam, Tanaka Yosiwo and others. Cordier BJ 672 (states 1866). Faint stamp on upper cover and title. A rare, small guide treating the Wolof language, the most common language spoken in Senegal, but also spoken in the Gambia and Mauritania. It’s mainly an oral language and therefore there are many different variants of spelling. This guide includes a dictionary, a small treatise on conjugation and a selection of basic phrases. It was printed at the mis-sion of St. Joseph Ngazobil, south of Dakar. Not in Vater.

Prior to the Turkish entry small letters a, t, and p to indicate the Arabic, Turkish, Persian or Persian-Turkish origin of the word. Occasionally some light straining. Schwab 1127. Zaunmüller 388. Provenance: Copy of Gustaf Richard Raquette (1871–1945) and later of Gustaf Albert Ahlbert (1884–1943). Both were Swedish linguists and missionaries in Eastern Turkestan.
