St Barth’sNew BeautyQueen

In a swish of blackand white tulle, theseven candidates in

the Miss Saint Barth2012-13 competitionmade their final sweepon the runway, at theend of a gala evening onthe main dock in Gus-tavia on Saturday,August 11. After notingthe allure, posture, andphysical beauty of thegirls as they paraded up

and back in traditionalSaint Barth cotton dress-es with straw hats andfans, then a sexy one-piece black bathing suit, and finally their sophisti-cated black and whiteevening gowns, the jurymembers—both menand women, half fromSaint Barth, half fromFrance—took their diffi-cult job very seriously,as all seven candidates

were beautiful, poisedyoung women. After tal-lying up the numbers, jury president MaryseChinon-Berry (a formerMiss Martinique) gavethe names of the winnersto Stephane Lancon, president of the MissSaint Barth Associationand organizer of thecompetition. And thewinners were announced:Jade Juraver Greaux, second runner up; Caro-line Cléquin, first runnerup; and Alizée Dele-mazure, the new Miss StBarth 2012-13 (age 17and 5’7” tall).Special guests for theevent included ChristelleRoca, the current Miss

National Prestige, andTifany Ledée, MissSaint Barth 2010-12,who was also sixth run-ner up in the MissNational Prestige com-petition, in which AlizéeDelemazure will nowhave her chance to rep-resent the island of SaintBarthélemy. As part ofthe festivities on thedock, Roca performedtwo flamenco dances ina fiery red dress, andconfided that althoughthis was her first visit toSaint Barth, she had fall-en in love with the islandand would be back. While on the island,Roca joined Ledée andothers for dinners at

Esprit, Wall House, Les Pêcheurs, and the CarlGustaf for a cocktail party with Alizée Dele-mazure, the lovely new Miss Saint Barth! “Somewhere Else,” an

exhibit by New York-basedartist Caitlin Hurd at theEden Rock Gallery includesfigurative and landscape oilpaintings. "They are a seriesabout the suspended-in-timemoments when the mind issomewhere else," says theartist. "After survivingbeing run over by a car, these moments are moreprominent in my mind. Mypaintings attempt to makesense of the accident andthese subtle and mysteriousworks convey the darkbeauty that we all noticefrom time to time. My workis focused on the line divid-ing what is experienced andwhat cannot be expressed inwords."This is Hurd's second solo

show at Eden Rock Gallery."I am so pleased to to beback," she confirms. Whilein St Barth, Hurd enjoyspainting in the gallery aswell as painting landscapesaround the island. "Thething I love most about StBarth is letting go of myeveryday New York Citylife and doing nothing butpainting (and swimming)for a month,"she notes."I also enjoy meeting peoplefrom all over the world andtalking to them about art."

Activity was up at thePort of Gustavia in thefirst half of 2012—

continuing an increase noted asof late 2011. From Januarythrough June 2012, there was notonly a swell in inter-island traf-fic, but also a hike in the numberof pleasure boats and cruise shipsthat called at the port, as well aspassengers at the maritime termi-nal. The first six months of theyear saw 4,186 pleasure boats, marking an uptick of 9.63%, or

368 more than in 2011. A total of27,700 passengers were aboardthese boats, for an increase of1.42%, yet they did not use themaritime terminal. However,91,307 passengers did use theterminal from January to June(45,193 arrivals; 46,114 depar-tures) and inter-island trafficincreased by 20%, or 15,200additional passengers. As forcruise ships, there were 126 moreduring this period (+7%), with35.113 passengers (or 70,226

counting arrivals and departures),with 23 cruise ships in January,36 in February, 46 in March, 19in April, 2 in May, and none inJune. That makes March thebusiest month for cruise ship pas-sengers, as well as inter-islandtraffic, and pleasure boats. Atotal of 161,153 passengers com-ing or going from the Port ofGustavia in the first six monthsof 2012 represents a boost of13.5% compared to the sameperiod in 2011.

The “EHPAD”Construction on the“EHPAD,” a retire-ment/nursing home inGustavia, began in 2010and should be completedby the end of 2013, withthe facility in use by ear-ly 2014. About half ofthe building is complete, with finishing workalready underway insome areas. “We are onschedule,” notes SophieOlivaud, director of theisland’s technical servic-es department.

Water TreatmentPlant and SewersBegun in late 2011, awater treatment plant andsewer system is under-way in Gustavia, andshould be functional byOctober. “That does notmean that everyone inGustavia will be connect-ed to the system immedi-ately,” warns Olivaud.Certain streets in townalready have sewersinstalled and the build-ings along those streets

will be connected first. InSeptember, work willbegin to install sewersalong Rue SamuelFahlberg.

The Commercial PortPlans to create 1200square meters of addi-tional storage space forsea containers ran intobedrock. Additional testshave determined thedepth and thickness ofthis rock formation sothat extra reinforcementwill be used to supportthe new dock. At the endof August, divers will

attack this underwaterproject.

RoadworkBefore the end of theyear, two additional sec-tions of roadwork shouldbe complete. In MontJean, the road will berepaved while electriccables, telephone wires, and new water pipes areplaced underground. InLurin, before the inter-section to Saline/SaintJean, part of the roadmust be reinforced, as itcan no longer support thelarge volume of traffic.

The road will also bewidened, with a sidewalkadded.

Maritime TerminalClearly the current ferryterminal is too small, andpassengers waiting for aboat are obliged to hangaround outside. And nowthat documents must bechecked for passengersarriving as well as thoseleaving, the terminal willbe enlarged to include anair-conditioned waitingroom with restrooms.

DormitoriesIn Saint JeanAthletes visiting SaintBarth for competitionswill soon be able to stayin eight new bungalowsbeing built at the sportscomplex in Saint Jean. Each can sleep four, ormore if needed with theinstallation of bunk beds, and each has its ownbathroom and kitch-enette. A track will alsobe added for jogging orwalking.

Residents along the Rue Général de Gaulle, Rue dela République, and Rue du Bord de Mer will be thefirst connected to the new water treatment plant
