Issue No 26 JUN'99/JUl'99

To All Sectional and Affiliated Organisations

Saltford Community Association News (SCAN) was introduced inlo the community many years ago specifically to the rest of the posted as to what was on! A quick browse the list of over 50 groups, societies and in the village reveals the comprehensive range of interests and activities available to all of us. We rcally do need to revitalise this communication to tell people in a way. We have always enjoyed publishing a regular handful of contributors. Don't miss this regular bi-monthly opportunity to tell us what you do, or have done or intend to do! A few sentences will be treated by us with the same enthusiasm as a few Put something down in you own words. We are not looking for literary masterpieces! Come on, let's be from you! Richard Davies.

OLD VIC THEATRE SCHOOL The General Purposes Committee of the Salt ford Community Association is delighted that the OLD VIC THEATRE SCHOOL is again visiting the Hall. On Friday 4 June they will present "HARD TIMES" Charles Dickens. Tickets cost £5 (£4 for concessions) and can be bought from Sa It ford Post Office or by telephoning 0117 9837825 or 01225 874235. SCA FUTURE EVENTS The General Purposes Committee are planning a couple of events for the Hall in the Autumn. On Friday 22 October we shall be putting on a Variety Evening. We to put a programme of

3

local artists. we shall have a bar and very reasonably priced tickets. One of the aims of the Hall is to provide entertainment for the Community and this we are always aiming to do. You may remember the visit 10 the hall last December of the Bendix Kingswood Band. We are hoping to have them back this year and we are at replacing the of the Christmas Tree" in its old form with a Concert the Bendix Kingswood Band and sometime during the evening the Christmas Tree. All this is in the pipe line at the moment. The Committee would very much welcome any ideas you may have for future enterlAinment or "events" you would like to see in your Hall. It is your Hall and it should be used to its full potential for the benefit of Saltford people. How nice it was to see the Hall full to

for the KLOG show "Me And My Girl" and to hear the sound of

filling the Hall, as indeed it did for the Drama Club's production of "Look No Hans". Two very good of how the Hall should be used and of first class "professional" enterlAinment right on our door steps with free parking and no tramc jams to get there if you come from Kcynsham and get tied up with the cows!!).

In the last ed it ion of SCA N I promised you an evening of laughte r at Salt fo rd Hall when we pre ented our latest prod uct ion "Look No Hans" . I was right wasn't I!! Rehear als were, as you can imagi ne, very enjoyable but not as enjoyable as the th ree nights of prod uction when the poor old producer is, by that time, completely redundant. However, I have now found my perfect job! Pou ring water and fish weed over the Chairman!! I promised him I had washed the fish weed when I took it ou t of the pond and I swear the water was supposed to be at least warm! Thank you for you r support and I hope that those of you we have not yet conve rted to local "am drams" wil l come along to one of our fut ure shows so you can see what we are all about and I promi e you will not be disappointed . Our next production is in November and we are at the moment looking fo r a suitable play. Don't fo rget if you wou ld like to help us, particula rl y back stage, please give me a ring on 0117 9837825.

We are keeping our finge rs cros ed because we may ha ve recruited a fe w more members for the male sec tion of ou r choir. We were approached by Marie Henderson who produces for Radio Bristol which does a feature to help club and societie in the area. Marie joined u for one of the fi nal rehearsals for ou r May concert , ' In the American Mood' and then did voice-over by our conductor Gloria Brock and John New. Radio Bristol broadcast our li tt le piece between its regula r prog rammes and the result was that three gentlemen have contac ted showi ng interest in joining us. We then invi ted them to come along to one of O Uf rehearsa ls to hea r ou r work and see if they liked us and they eemed enthusiastic . We do hope that they will turn up when we begin preparing for or Winter concert . We' re keeping our fi nge rs crossed. By the way ' thank you ' to all those who came to our May concert wh ic h everybody thoroughly enjoyed. - Betty Fuge.

SALTFORD PARISH COUNCIL NEWS Clak to the Council- Mrs M L M Frr:cmantle, 489, Bath Road, Salt[ord, Brist;}1 BSJI JBA

Tr:I: 01225400058 NEW MEMBERS OF THE PARISH COUNCIL The new Parish Council has now started its four year term of office. Three of the cleven existing Members decided to stand, so there are plenty of ncw faces to continue the work of the previous Council in trying to achieve the best possible environment and services for Saltford residents, either directly or working with B&NES Council/Highways Agency where possible. The list of members of the Parish Council is on the Notice Board by the Post Office (one vacancy wi II be fillc<.l by co-option at the Counci I meeting on I st June)

NEW STREET LIGHT In partnership with the Parish Council, B&NES Council has installed a new street light on the long path between Kingston Avenue and Howard Close. This was the direct result of a resident's suggestion. passed to a Parish Councillor.

OFF-STREET CAR Parking Charges After many very strongly worded protests from your Parish Council and local 8&NES Councillors, the Parish Council is delighted that 8&NES Council has decided not to introduce car parking charges in it's off-street car parks in Saltford at this time. As much notice as possible will be given of any proposal to reconsider this.

SAL TFORD LIBRARY At the time of writing. B&NES Council has yet to install the computer facilities at the Library, although it had been thought this had been done when the library closed in Fcbruary . The Parish Council will be asking B&NES Council to provide maximum publicity when it is installed and apologises for any inconvenience caused by the misleading information given in the previous issue.

CIRCUl,AR FOOTPATH WALK A level circular footpath along the public rights of way from Salt ford Hall has now been created . All stiles have been replaced by kissing gates so that no climbing is needed. From thc Playing Fields, it crosses the old bridge over the main railway line and then runs alongside the railway to the rear of Tunnel House Hotel in Norman Road . "Saltford on Foot" maps are still available for sale from local outlets. Walkers going up to the top of Kelston Roundhill are askt:d to make sure they keep to the marked permissive paths - I understand that B&NES Council has received complaints about some walkers not respecting private propert·y.

ST MARY'S CHURCHYARD WALLS The Parish Council is responsible for the upkeep of St Mary's Churchyard, including the boundary walls. The short section of wall which collapsed recently will be replaced shortly and the Council plans to carry out work on the gate and the wall nex t to this during this financial year (subject to the necessary permissions being obtained) B&NES Council has given grant towards these repairs in place of the proposed undergrounding scheme which will not now be taking place . Madeleine Freemantle, Clerk

AfTiliated Organisation News

Pre-School Comes of Age As Saltford Pre-school approaches it's 21 st birthday it is surprising to find that there are many people that do not know of its existence. We were set up by a group of mothers (originally meeting in one of their homes in Grange Road) who wanted to be involved with their children's pre-school education and finding existing groups not catering for them. As the numbers grew they looked for a larger place to meet, and moved into Salt ford Hall. They joined the Pre-School Learning Alliance and trained to be leaders. As it is a community playgroup with the same outgoings such as rent and wages as any other group but no profit to make, the fees were reasonable making it even more attractive. Now 21 years on, we still have an original SLaff member. now helping not leading - Frances insists "J've done my bit", and another - Rita Dowse helps out often. We are still non-profit making and members of the P.S.L.A., but have moved with the times and qualify for government funding for 4 year olds and are therefore Ofsted inspected. The Ofsted Report was very good. A copy is available at t.he Pre-School or Salt ford Primary School for viewing. Parents/carers are still welcome to help but it is not compulsory. We also include "Tiny Tumblers" in Monday's session, just 50p extra, a saving of £1.50 on the usual charge. We thought it would be nice to celebrate our 21st birthday (in September). If you have any photographs, memories or ideas please come and share them with us. We still meet at Saltford Hall every weekday morning now from 9.15 until 12.15. It would be nice to see or hear from ex

13

parents and children. There will be a number of growers offering a wide variety of plants - hardy perennials, conservatory and patio plants. herbs etc .. You are sure to find something unusual - even rare! Tea and Coffee will be available . Admission 50p in aid of the N.C.C.P.G .. Please support this Charity. R.N.L.1. Saltford Branch The Wine and Cheese Party will be held at the Bristol Avon Sailing Club on Friday 18th June at 8.00 pm. Tickets are priced at £4.00 and are avai lable from Committee Members or call Salt ford 873476. Please support the Lifeboat Service in its 175th Anniversary Year. S Mc D Salt ford Toe H The Branch will be holding a Coffee Morning with Sales Table on Wednesday 23rd June 1999 from 10.OOam to 12 noon in the Wansdyke Room, Saltford Hall. Tickets 50p available - please telephone 01225 872528, or at the door. We would welcome your support for this event in aid of Toe H work .

TOC H SAYS THANK YOU to all Salt ford residents who so kindly and generously supported the recent Clothing Collection with good clothing . A total of 41 bags was collected and is being distributed to eight different organisations and three charity shops. Afliliated Organisation News (Continued from page 17)

Saltford Morning Townswomens' Guild In April, Mr Bob Porton took members on a tour of the Cotswolds, covering the area from Dyrham Park up as far as Buriord and Broadway, many members remembered visiting those places. For those who had never explored the Cotswolds, it is very likely that they will be doing so as soon as the weather becomes warmer - and drier. With so many beautiful and ancient places to visit al most on ou r doorstep life need not be dull, whether for short l'ar rides, or more energetic walking. Mr Porton's love and knowledge of the area came over in his entcrtainin ~ and sometimes amusing talk . The May meeting was concerned with the motions to be discussed at the forthcoming Annual General Meeting of the Town~womens' Guild. With two rather weighty and involved subjects to discuss, (I) Organ Donation and (2) Genetic and Reproductive Techniques, it was dec ided to split up into groups. This worked very well , members were able to express their points of view and listen to other members in the group rather than have to speak to the meeting as a whole . Our next meeting wi ll be on June 10th with two speakers, Mrs M oakes from the Bristol Magpies and Dr Gilbey from the oncology unit of the Bristo l RUH that has been chosen as the charity for 1999. Visitors are always very welcome, the second Thursday or each month in the Wansdyke Room, Salt ford Hall. D. R.
