chapter has intrigued, interested and sometimes baffled me over the last 20 years i have been working in Wales. now in post for close to nine months i can confirm that it is still interesting, intriguing and also sometimes quite baffling. Unique is a word that maybe we overuse in selling ourselves in the arts. in the case of chapter i believe the term is justified.forty years ago chapter grew out of the integrity and dedication of artists and the art in which they believed. it did not come out of a feasibility study or a regeneration project but truly from a grass roots desire to place art at the heart of this part of west cardiff.since then chapter’s community roots have become stronger and more embedded. today its role and importance is undoubted, to the extent that it could almost be described as part of the establishment

— though many a loyal chapterite would shudder at the suggestion. yet many challenges remain. as we head into the next 40 years can we do so without the hint of a middle-aged spread?While these are challenging times Wales has not seen the same level of savage cuts in the arts as has been the case over the border. the Welsh government sees their intrinsic social value to a greater extent than Westminster. nevertheless the public investment squeeze is on and chapter needs a robust business base and operational structure so that creativity and artistic risk can be supported and developed further in line with the aspirations of our key public stakeholders and audiences.With a sustainable business base chapter can thrive and develop enormously in the next few years and the potential is almost limitless.i want chapter to be recognised internationally as Wales’ leading arts centre where artistic experimentation and boldness are encouraged and where different types of audiences are engaged. since our redevelopment of our café-bar numbers coming through the doors have at times been overwhelming.

the result is a genuinely inclusive social space that is an artistic opportunity in itself. mothers and toddlers, knitting circles, youth groups and artists all mingle together. the opportunity and challenge for us is to ensure our visitors engage in the arts programme that we deliver in the building as well as in the wider community through our participation programmes.core to chapter’s values is its support for emerging and aspiring Welsh artists, whether they are filmmakers, visual or performance artists. We are building on this through our involvement in the creative producer for Dance initiative over the next three years in partnership with arts council Wales and the tender-winning creative producer carole blade.Developing exciting artistic partnerships is one of my key plans for the future. We have over 30 smes in the creative industries based in market house across the road from the main building. closer ties are being discussed with our resident companies earthfall, ffotogallery, bafta cymru and the recently housed theatr iolo.these partnerships will form the basis of future investment at chapter. at the same time we must address our environmental responsibilities and provide as much opportunity for the creative sector to expand. after all, this is now recognised as a key economic driver for both the cardiff and the wider Welsh economy. our aim is to unlock the potential of the incipient talent that surrounds us and enable it to flourish.

taking its title from a line in philip larkin’s ‘i remember i remember’ this exhibition explores the meaningfulness of ‘events’ in our lives, as opposed to the unadorned fact of ‘living’.the work explores the nearly imperceptible evolutions in everyday life; the slow history that lies beneath the surface of culture and contrasts with the high-paced changes dominating the surface. the works delve beneath the rapid succession of events on a human scale, to find the slower currents typical of the history of human groups — relating to their environment and the structures that shape societies. the social history described by historian fernand braudel as an “anonymous history, working in the depths and most often in silence”.

This exhibition has received financial support from the Arts Council of Wales and the Belgian Embassy and is part of the Chapter 40 celebrations.

art in the bar pete Williams: 3.20m 48.08f 5910sUntil Sun 19 August • Tan Sul 19 Awstthis exhibition marks the culmination of work which Williams began during a three month residency at aberystwyth arts centre. initially consisting of drawings, photographs, notes and ideas it has transformed into prints and large-scale works produced specifically for chapter.Utilising traditional methods of printmaking — woodcuts/engraving, lithography and stone — Williams uses print as a vehicle with endless possibilities. each journey is mapped and logged in the form of a series of drawings and photographs, that ultimately become realised as large woodcut block and prints, displayed here side by side on the caffi bar walls. the pace, time and distance is logged, which in turn informs the title of each work.a passion for running is a key inspiration in the work including the views experienced during Williams’ ‘journeys’. like a form of relaxation, it is a time to gather thoughts and mentally unwind. the pace of running is important — methodical and rhythmical, which is replicated in the working and cutting of the block. following the success of last year’s course, and as part of this year’s Experimentica 12: UNSEEN, we are offering a ten-week course — on Wednesday evenings plus two saturday sessions — which gives you the opportunity to study, gain practical experience and discuss the history and contemporary understanding of performance art.

‘performance art’ as a term describes artworks that range from art actions, experimental performance, installation and live art, as well as dance and theatre. it continues to influence much of contemporary practice at venues like chapter as well as galleries, museums, festivals and artist-run projects across the world. this course gives a practical and accessible guide to understanding how performance art is made and considered as well as an opportunity to collaborate, whether as audience, artist, writer or organiser. the course was created by Davida Hewlett, who will lead the sessions with invited guest artists. included in the course is a pass to Experimentica 12: UNSEEN which takes place from Wed 21 — sun

did you know that the best seller in the caffi bar is our mighty homemade Welsh beef burger? to celebrate our star performing patty and to coincide with independence day on 4 July, we’re hosting our first burger Festival! We’re turning the caffi bar into an American diner and from 5pm each night you’ll be able to choose from one of our tantalizing classic, gourmet or veggie burgers. Keep an eye on our website for the full festival menu. Please note that our normal café menu will run throughout the festival.

CommunityGardenlast year’s eating Green went down a storm and we’re starting to get a sneaking suspicion that you like your food as much as we do. From 11am–6pm you can explore our local food market amongst the veg and flowers in our community garden, grab a delicious Palooza special from the chapter food stall, oh, and of course the local craft cider and perry will be flowing at our festival bar from 1pm–12am. And as an added extra Green city will be hosting local food and family friendly workshops throughout the day — more details can be found on our website.

Chapter is situated in Canton, behind Cowbridge Road East, between Llandaff Road and Market Road. We are easily accessible from the city centre. Overflow car parking is available after 6pm at Cardiff Community Learning Services adjacent to the car park at Chapter. Alternative nearby car parks are shown above. Number 17, 18 and 33 buses leave every five minutes from the City Centre. From the east on M4: Take exit 29 onto the A48; after 6 miles turn slight left onto A4119/ Mill Lane; then left onto Cardiff Road; continue straight onto B4267/Llandaff Rd; after 300m turn right onto Market Place; take next right onto Market Road; Chapter car park is on the right.From the west on M4: Take exit 33 and follow signs onto A4232; after 6.3 miles exit onto Leckwith Rd, towards the new Cardiff City Stadium; keep straight until turning left onto Cowbridge Road E; Market Rd is on your right; Chapter car park is on the right. aCCeSS For all
