We've been challenged! The BMW CCA Foundation is our non-profit charitable organization whose main purpose is to run the Street Survival program for improvingteen drivers and preserving/archiving BMW-related paraphernalia. To assist in theircapital campaign, they have created an exciting contest called the 2016 BMW CCAChapter Challenge. The chapter(s) with the highest participation will be awarded lasting recognition at the BMW CCA Foundation. How can you help? Buy a brick! It's tax-deductible and will be prominently displayed at the BMW CCA Foundationalong with all other National Capital Chapter bricks. Visit the Foundation's webpage, www.bmwccafoundation.org, for more information on how you can buy and customizeyour brick. The Challenge will last throughout the rest of this year and monthly resultswill be communicated through various media. As the largest CCA chapter, I'm hopingfor your participation as we can truly make a difference in the lives of future teen drivers.

Finally, I hope you heard the great news! Our annual Car of Your Dreams raffle just started and this is your chance to win a limited edition M4 GTS as the Grand Prize. Only 300 will be allocated to the United States, so this is guaranteed tobe a collector’s item. Plus, don't forget that for every 5,000 tickets sold, we'll be giving away a new car, so the more tickets you buy, the more chances you have to win!National Capital Chapter has a great history of winning cars over the years, will yoube the next lucky person?

To Members of the National Capital ChapterIt takes a great deal of planning and coordination to execute the many club

related activities that are put on for the benefit of the membership. It also takes alot of equipment; the chapter has tents, tables, chairs, banners, and more. Storingand moving these items has become more complex and time consuming as theamount of equipment grows with the increasing number of events.

To address this situation, the chapter is looking to secure a “Chapter UtilityVehicle” to store and move our equipment and supplies. Since we are a BMWclub we prefer a BMW Touring model to support our needs. Specifically we areseeking an E39 (1995 to 2003) chassis vehicle. An E34 chassis (1988 to 1995)is also acceptable. Obviously we would like the vehicle to be in the best possible condition, but the need for some degree of minor mechanical repair is acceptable.

If any chapter member owns such a vehicle and is interested in donating itto the chapter we would be interested in hearing from you. Also, if you know ofa vehicle meeting our needs that is available outside of the chapter, we would beinterested in hearing about it as well.

We seem to have missed Spring. Yoyo through coldto hot to humid. Beautiful weather for driving, but notso much for lollygagging. Speaking of Spring,O’Fest is only two months away. Better make plansnow. Driving, flying, whatever. Hotel rooms are stillneeded. Turns out, I have an advantage, as I haverelatives who lives in Carmel. We shall see.

Again, there are many events planned by ourchapter. These are fun events. They range from “lo-tech” to intensive driving. Cars and Coffee isone example of “lo-tech.” All that is needed to participate is a short drive to wherever the venue is.No twisty roads, and little planning is necessary.

But talking with fellow BMW owners can be enlight-ening. Then there are intensive events such as the“Pie Runs.” Actually, in these events, drivers can go as fast (within limits) or as slow as desired. The routes are always entertaining and are “bookended” with restaurants and places to purchase pies (hence the name).

Autocross is in full swing. In May there was acombined Autocross/Cars&Coffee. At one of theseevents, one can chat with other members whileslurping coffee and watching the Autocross folks try to outdo one another. In this type of event, lightweight cars have some difficulty. There were a

couple of Corvettes in attendance and all spun outon one lap or another. They have a great deal ofpower, but not so much weight, so it is easy to getahead of the curve.

One of my favorite articles is on One Lap ofAmerica. The article is in keeping with the quality of dB, but I am more fascinated by those who participate in this event. It is on my bucket list.

So everyone, Happy Motoring. Be safe andkeep the rubber on the road.

Please make sure we have your correct emailaddress. It can be checked and updated at thewww.bmwcca.org website.

Ihave removed the clutch-delay valve (CDV)from each modern BMW I have owned. Whatis the CDV you ask? The CDV is a valve in your

car’s clutch line that restricts the flow of hydraulicfluid. It limits how fast the clutch allows the driveline to engage. The CDV is supposed tomake it easier for an inexperienced manual transmission driver because it helps avoid stallsand abrupt upshifts. However, it can be incredi-bly frustrating for someone who is already proficient at driving with one.

If you are wondering whether your BMWhas a CDV, it is pretty fair to assume that most(but not all) models with a manual transmissionmade in the last 15 years have one. Removingthe CDV isn’t much harder than changing your oiland typically involves (1) lifting the car; (2)unscrewing and removing the valve from yourclutch line; and (3) bleeding the clutch line (andperhaps topping off the brake fluid reservoir). For my Z3 M Roadster, the only difference in thisprocedure is that the CDV is incorporated into a

short stretch of rubber clutch line and the entireclutch line needs to be removed and replaced.

I decided to remove the CDV at our AprilDIY at BMW of Sterling. I had one end of the CDV’s clutch line undone in less than fiveminutes. However, when I went to remove theother end, the retaining nut wasn’t as accommo-dating. The nut was frozen and trying to loosenit with a little more “persuasion” was starting to twist my hard metal clutch line. What hadstarted out as a fairly simple procedure had suddenly become unexpectedly harder. If I brokemy metal clutch line while trying to loosen thenut, my car was going to be laid up and I wouldbe taking Uber back home.

I applied some penetrating oil to the nut tohelp loosen it up without success. Fortunately, the value in a DIY event is having access to other

DIYers and skilled technicians for help in a crisis.Several club members offered a few differentplans of attack. Ultimately, Shop Foreman JasonBrown came through with just the right tool tosave the day – he lent me a flared crow’s footwrench. With the correct tool and another liberalapplication of penetrating oil, I broke the nutwithout destroying my metal clutch line. Insteadof a thirty-minute fix, the whole process took meover two hours, but success was achieved andmy clutch operation has been improved.

BMW of Sterling is one of the few familyowned dealerships in our area. It is owned byThomas Moorehead and it is an impressive dealership in every respect. In fact, the size oftheir inventory and service facility is among thelargest I have ever seen.

This impression was confirmed when Parts

(Top and Above) Tim McNeish's Imola Red 2007 Z4 M Coupe has just 13,000 miles.Nonetheless, he replaced several of the fluids in his car at the April DIY held at BMW ofSterling. (Bottom Left) DIY regular Chris Wootten conducts a brake pad and rotor inspection on his car.

Manager Ryan Hoover told me that they have over 60 service bays. Ryangenerously reserved an entire row ofservice bays for our chapter’s DIY projects. This meant that nearly every-one had a lift and that there was someextra time for more involved projects.

BMW of Sterling is a DINANauthorized parts dealer. They offer discounts to club members for parts andservice. If you have to fly out of DullesAirport for work or pleasure, you candrop off your BMW or Mini for service, they will shuttle you to the airport at nocharge, and they will store your car for areasonable amount of time until youreturn. They also offer loaner cars forservice appointments.

Father and son duo James andDavid Churbuck took on one of themeatier tasks of the day – replacing theguibo (driveshaft flex disc) on their Z3Coupe 2.8. DIY regular Mark Shafferflushed the brake fluid on his 2002BMW 530i. Nick Nikas changed theengine oil, front and rear differentialfluid, and transmission fluid on his2005 Subaru Outback. Yeah you readthat right – it was a Subaru. We welcome any brand of car at our DIYevents.

Without question, Ty Joseph tookon the most involved task of the day byreplacing the front struts/springs andrear shocks/springs on his 1999 Z3 MRoadster. Tony Haney did an oil changeand coolant/brake fluid flush on his2010 Z4 3.0. Jack Ballestero changedthe engine oil and checked the belts on his 2002 325xi. DIY regular TimMcNeish replaced the engine oil, transmission fluid, and differential fluidon his immaculate 2007 Imola Red Z4 MCoupe. Greg Rea replaced the rearbrake lines on his classic Euro 1985 M635CSi. Harsha Kiron replaced theautomatic transmission fluid and filteron his 2007 530i.

Dough Verner replaced the engineoil, flushed the brake fluid, and installedsome sporty new DINAN aluminumpedal covers on his 2005 Phoenix GelbM3 ZCP DINAN S2. The dB’s co-editorAnna Maripuu got into the action bychanging the engine oil in her 2010 X3 3.0.

DIY Chair Phillip Cummings did amasterful job of making sure that every-one stayed on time and task. There wasalso a nice array of food for breakfastand sandwich platters for lunch. Manythanks go out to BMW of Sterling formaking this event so successful!

AprilBMW of SterlingCars and Coffee By Anna Maripuu | Photos by Paul Seto

We all have friends who don’t drive their cars in the rain. And with goodreason. But it’s a pity, because those who didn’t turn up missed a funNCC Cars and Coffee event on April 2. Plenty of brave souls did show

up with some awesome cars to the combined C&C and DIY hosted by BMW of Sterling. And as it happens, the sun even showed up eventually.

After a relatively peaceful winter with fewer car club events taking place, this was the first combined C&C and DIY to kick off our 2016 season. WhileDIY’ers got busy inside wrenchingon cars, the rest of the participantsshowed off their cars and caught upon the latest news, modificationsthat have been done to cars, newcars that have been bought, andgenerally ogling the car eye candy.

NCC had a tent set up and wassigning up new club members andhanding out information about theclub and posters from the recentscreening of the film No Limits.

I was particularly impressedwith a brand spanking new 2016 M4that a new member arrived in. He had taken double delivery of the vehicle, in Munich at the BMW Welt, and then again inSpartanburg, South Carolina at the BMW Performance Driving Center.

For those unfamiliar with European Delivery and US Delivery (DoubleDelivery, we like to call it), one can order a BMW to one’s specifications. Thenone travels to Munich to pick up the vehicle when it has been manufactured. One then may drive it in Germany or throughout Europe for a two-week period,

whereupon the vehicle is shipped to South Carolina, where one can once againtake delivery of the car, and this time for good!

The European Delivery part is actually pretty cool as it includes the fourteen-day European road insurance and registration, a factory tour andmuseum tour at BMW Welt, and customs duty and clearance and other handling fees for entrance to the US.

The BMW Performance Delivery program includes a factory tour, an intro-duction to one’s car by a ProductSpecialist, and then driving asimilar model to your car on the performance test track withinstruction by professional driving instructors.

This particular M4 was an individual color called AzuriteBlack – it was a shade of blackwith some blue underneath it tomake it shimmer. Subtle, but pretty stunning.

Other great cars were on thescene. Matt Malesic had hisSakhir Orange F13 M6, andHuggie Harrigan came with hisblacked out F82 M4.

Anita Patton has a fleet of amazing cars, and she brought her 1985 Japanese market M6, which is a stunner and has been featured in past editions of der Bayerische. Doug Dolanbrought his 2001 740i Sport with its conversion to a 6-speed manualtransmission. Greg Rea turned up in his 1985 European market M635.

Our host from BMW of Sterling, Jason, had his manual transmission E30

We had some interlopers showup, but hey, we love cars, so that’s ok.A bright yellow Ferrari convertible gotsome attention, as well as a brandnew Porsche 911 sporting white livery and red stripes.

And eventually, the sun showedup. I think those who braved the rainwere happy they did. It was a greatturn-out and a good start to the Cars & Coffee season.

No doubt most auto enthusiasts have heard of theCannonball Run, if not the real unsanctioned race fromNew York to Los Angeles, at least the 1981 movie

starring Burt Reynolds. In the 1970s, automotive journalistBrock Yates organized the “Cannonball Baker Sea-to-

Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash.” It was a protest againstthe 55-mph national speed limit imposed during the energycrisis. The fastest time in the series of Cannonball Runs wasjust under 33 hours – coast to coast. That’s averaging over 87mph, including stops, clearly illegal speeds.

Over time, the illegal speed event onpublic roads evolved into somethinglegal, the “One Lap of America.” EachMay dozens of teams, in a wide variety ofvehicles, participate in a week-long seriesof competitive events at race tracksaround the country. The travel betweenevents on public roads can be done atlegal speeds. This year “One Lap”passed through National Capital Chapterterritory with a visit to Summit PointMotorsports Park, one of eight stops onthe 2,827-mile route.

The paddock contained an eclecticcollection of competitors, including eightBMWs, Corvettes, a Porsche 918 Spyderhybrid, Mini Clubman, Toyota minivan, and an Ariel Atom open track car. Manyof the cars are highly modified. The carsmust be street legal, but otherwise modifications are wide open.

Among the BMW drivers werechapter member Brian Hair, localautocrosser and racer, and Mike Renner, instructor at the BMW PerformanceDriving School.

Brian, on his 7th One Lap, partneredwith Mike Roberts from Massachusetts,on his 31st. They drove his 2015 bonestock M235i, shod with Bridgestone RE71Rs, 10mm wider than stock. Briansaid, “The M235i, an 8-speed automaticwith paddle shifters, was almost as quickas a stock E90 M3! I was only about 2

seconds per lap slower than the MPerformance Driving School's M2, andbeat the M2 in the autocross! The M235iis truly an amazing package for just under $50K.”

Mike Renner drove the new M2,fully optioned with BMW M Performanceparts, including an adjustable coil-oversuspension. Mike pointed out if you buyyour M2 fitted that way, it is fully coveredby the factory warranty. On a cloudy, coolday, Hair’s best laps were about 1:27 andRenner’s about 1:25. Those familiar withSummit Point will recognize those asdamn good times.

There is nothing like planning for a European vacation, especially if one isa CCA member. While vacationing in Europe means castles, tours, cruising, eating, history, and culture to others, to the BMW CCA member

it’s all that plus DRIVING.Ah yes, driving BMWs on the roads

for which they were designed puts a smileon the face of even the most stoic BMWCCA member. We have visions of havingno electronic speed limiters and in somecases, no speed limits, dancing throughour heads as we scour European carrental agencies that specialize in BMWs.

From my experience, they are notthat hard to find. One of my favorites is acompany called SiXT, which seems to beloosely affiliated with Budget Rental Car.There are other reputable car rental companies in Europe, and I encourageyou to shop around. For those of you“first timers” to a European driving vacation, you may be surprised to findthat BMWs, Audis, and Mercedes are

common to the European rental car fleets. Because of the nationalistic natureof every European country, your best bet for being assured a BMW rental vehicle would be in Germany. That being said, these three brands are quite

popular in every European car rental fleet. It pains me to say this, but my father

was (again) correct when he told me thatBMWs and Mercedes are as common inEurope as Ford and Chevrolet are theUnited States.

While still considered a premiumbrand, the major differences I’ve observedbetween the European and NorthAmerican BMWs are (1) the widespreadapplication of diesel engines, (2) theavailability of cloth upholstery, and (3)the availability of manually adjustableseats. Oddly enough, over the years I’veheard from a number of BMW CCA members their desire to have these threefeatures available in the U.S. products! However, having been badly burned bytheir recent diesel experience (diesel

By James Chew

(Top) Next time you’re in Europe, visit a BMW dealership. It’s quitefun! (Above) To the BMW CCA member, the Europe-only 1 Series driver and front passenger area will look quite familiar.

power cars account for less than1.5% of total U.S. BMW car salesbecause of the “VW effect,” low gasprice, and higher diesel vehicle price."Green" people stopped buying any"clean" diesel after VW, and becausethe average price of diesel has beenhigher than gas for the past threeyears, buyers shied away from thehigher diesel vehicle prices) BMWmay be a bit hesitant to make available the other two – primarilybecause they don’t add to BMW’sdesired “premium” North Americanperformance luxury car image.

If one rents a car in Europe, Iwould suggest selecting BMWs that

2 0 1 6 B M W 1 S E R I E S A N D 2 S E R I E S A C T I V E T O U R E R

aren’t available in North America inorder to experience how BMW triesto respond to the different marketdesires. For that reason, rentingeither a 1 Series or a 2 Series ActiveTourer would make for an enjoyableand different BMW driving experience.

While in Bordeaux, we visitedone of the local BMW dealers toinspect, drive, and photograph boththe 1 Series and 2 Active Tourer.

The 1 Series is arguably themost applauded Chris Bangle-eraBMW. But it’s not the no-longer-available sedan and convertiblethat’s found a market – it’s the three-

door and five-door hatchback. Sinceit was launched in 2004, BMW CCAmembers who have visited Europeand seen and driven the 3-, and 5-door hatchbacks have been pleadingwith BMW NA to bring these vehiclesto the U.S.

Classified in Europe as a “compact executive car,” you will seea good number 1 Series on theEuropean roads. Unlike others in itsclass, the 1 Series is rear-wheel drivewith a 50/50 weight balance. Thesedistinctive features could be the reason why the 1 Series makes up20% of BMW’s European sales.

The BMW exterior designersdid give the 1 Series the distinctiveBMW look. The recent fresheninggives the 1 Series a low, well-proportioned, sleek profile. Whencompared to the VW, Audi, Opel,Peugeot, Renault, and Mercedescompetition, the 1 Series exudes an“ultimate driving machine” vibe.

The 1 Series interior will makepast and current E36 owners smile. Not only will the seating position andvision seem familiar, the driver andfront passenger seats are manuallyadjustable. The standard clothupholstery is quite comfortable andfeels durable. Both the three-doorand five-door 1 Series have plenty ofrear seat room, easily holding twofull size adults in comfort.

What was most interesting is

(Top) The BMW CCA members willfind the Europe-only 1 Series rearhatch cargo area quite handy.(Below) The 2 Series ActiveTourer’s cockpit will make theBMW faithful forget that this vehicle IS a minivan!

(Above) While it LOOKS like our gasoline-powered 2.0 TwinPower Turboinline 4, it’s actually a DIESEL!

active youth market. These are millenials who AREN’T obsessed withsocial media, they are for people andfamilies that want to go outdoors and“do something.”

The 2016 2 Series Active Tourerlooks like a BMW. The creases andcrisp lines provide the illusion of a lower profile. There are enough distinctive exterior design cues togive the 2 Series Active Tourer theillusion of motion.

The interior has a distinctiveupscale vibe – NOT a Chrysler Townand Country (leather wrapped DodgeCaravan) minivan vibe, but a BMWX1/Mercedes GLA vibe. It’s the typeof minivan (oops) that one wouldexpect to see in the upscale suburbanAmerican neighborhoods primaryand secondary school “drop off/pickup” lanes.

In terms of driving, there’s onlyso much you can expect from a front-engine, front-wheel-drive “multi-purpose vehicle.” The front weightbias can’t be designed away. Thatbeing said, during our short testdrive, we did notice that the 2 SeriesActive Tourer does handle quite well. Those who have driven the MiniClubman and Countryman will feelquite comfortable behind the wheel ofthis vehicle.

Both the 1 Series, and 2 SeriesActive Tourer feature the now familiarTwinPower Turbo four-cylinder dieselengine. With plenty of power andgreat fuel economy, it’s the idealengine for the BMW CCA memberEuropean driving experience.

In my humble opinion, if you’replanning a European driving vacationfor two, rent a BMW 1 Series. If youbring your family, rent a BMW 2Series Active Tourer.

And if you do, please considersubmitting a review for this publica-tion. It would be great to have new contributors.

that 1 Series drives like an E36. The BMW chassis and drivetrainengineers must have learned quite abit from the E36 318ti. The twowords that best describe the 1 Seriesdriving experience is “fun” and“more.”

The hatchback design providesthe expected handy rear-cargo area.Of course, the dual folding rear seatsgive the 1 Series the cargo capabili-ty of most compact crossover SUVs.

So, will BMW NA ever be motivated to bring the 1 Serieshatchbacks to the U.S.? Probablynot. While they may be over the318ti experience, the BMW AG andNA executives most likely rememberthe recent short lived Saturn Astra, which was an Opel. While a verynice vehicle with distinctiveEuropean driving characteristics, the Astra never found a market. For some reason, VW is the onlyautomaker that has found success inthe U.S. market with three-door andfive-door hatchbacks. Audi classi-fies the very nice A3 as a “smallcrossover.”

Many may wonder why BMWdeveloped the 2 Series Active Tourer. It’s quite simple – their Europeancompetitors have entries in this market segment. And the BMWleadership didn’t want to risk losingBMW owners that wanted a familyvehicle, but didn’t want a stationwagon or an SAV.

Visiting the BMW R&D facilities, one sees that the engineersand designers are given the freedomto experiment. I suspect that afterperfecting the Mini front-wheel-drivearchitecture, these engineers anddesigners decided to design a competitor to Mercedes B-class, VWGolf Sports Van, and CitroenPicasso. The result is an upscalefamily hauler that has the fun andoptimistic vibe of the originalChrysler minivan.

While still a BMW, the 2 SeriesActive Tourer is clearly aimed at the

Page 21: Magazine of the National Capital Chapter BMW Car …Magazine of the National Capital Chapter BMW Car Club of America July |August 2016 28 National Capital Chapter BMW Car Club of America

Ionce read that millionaire Ted Leonsis’ personal bucket list was inspired by anear-miss plane crash he experienced when he was 25 years old. It included things like “own a professional sports franchise” (he now owns

two), create a company, conduct an IPO, and give away over 100 million dollars. Amazingly, Leonsis has achievedover three-quarters of the items on the listhe created.

My personal bucket list isn’t quite asaspirational as Leonsis’ although our listsdo have some overlap. For example, itemswe have in common include – fall in loveand get married, have children, restore anantique car, and swim with the dolphins. However, here are some of the things onmy list that are not on Ted’s: 24 Hours ofLeMans, Pebble Beach Concours,Goodwood Festival of Speed, Formula 1Race, Petersen Auto Museum, LeMay AutoMuseum, Cite de l Automobile, and compete in a ChumpCar race.

The Lane Motor Museum (LMM) inNashville has also been on my bucket list, but I am happy to report that it has been officially crossed off! I first learned ofthe museum from a television show featuring a 1932 Helicron in its collection. The Helicron is a one of a kind propeller driven car discovered in a French barn

about 15 years ago. I could just imagine it motoring down French countryroads chopping up any chickens that crossed in its path. My interest waspiqued.

The LMM is home to the largest collection of European cars in the country and it includes over 45 differentmarques. The museum was founded byJeff Lane in 2002 and his personal collec-tion of approximately 70 cars was just thebeginning. Over the years, the museum’scollection has exploded and it now numbers approximately 450 vehicles.About 150 cars are kept on display on themuseum’s main exhibition level and theremainder reside in a large basement parking area. LMM gives tours of thebasement collection on the weekends.

Unlike most museums, there are noropes or barriers around the cars on display. Most windows are rolled downand, somewhat analogous to assessing afine wine, you can stick your head insideand inhale deeply to appreciate a car’s

bouquet (this is how I have come to enjoy the distinct interior smells of a 2002,356, and VW Beetle). Nearly all of the vehicles are kept in working order and still get driven.

Bucket List Worthy – A Trip to the Lane Motor Museum

Spending just a few minutesadmiring each car on display wouldrequire over seven hours. In fact, Ispent a full day at the museum andcould have easily come back the nextday if my schedule had permitted.

I was very fortunate to meetLMM’s Director Jeff Lane andManager (also a fellow BMW CCAmember) David Yando. A naturalstarting point for us was the museum’s new exhibit celebratingthe 100th Anniversary of BMW.

At the center of the BMW exhibit is a kiosk that includes

A T R I P T O T H E L A N E M O T O R M U S E U M

historical background on the marqueand the importance of US importerMax Hoffman. David Yando hasloaned his personal E30 M3 to theexhibit and he will surely miss itwhile on display.

The LMM’s 1930 BMW Dixi is one of the earliest BMWs I haveever seen. With only 18 horsepower(5 more than an Isetta 300) thesecars were capable of reaching about50 miles per hour. They were intend-

ed to be easy to maintain and economical. Only 150 of thesesporty two-seaters were producedand the LMM’s collection has a one-off, special body. It is believed tohave been bodied by a Dresdencoachbuilder, Keiser, prior to WorldWar II.

Several other BMWs are gathered to help form a circle. Theyinclude a 2002, Isetta 300, and Isetta600. Two pretty rare models on display include a 1938 320 (ofwhich there are only 17 knownexamples) and a 1963 3200S. The3200S was introduced in 1961 asthe successor to the 502. Other thanhaving a little more horsepower than

the 502, they appear very similar. This special exhibit celebratingBMW’s centennial would make thisyear a particularly good one to visitthe LMM.

One of the things that the LMMis widely known for is its impressivecollection of Tatras, the largest out-side of Czech Republic. The Tatrawas a highly advanced car for its time– kind of like a Tesla in the 1930s-40s. In the 30s, they became the firstcompany to produce an aerodynamiccar powered by an air cooled enginemounted in the rear. If that soundskind of like a Porsche or Beetle, youwould be right, except the Tatra was a four-door sedan and the rear-

mounted engine was a V8.Impressive aerodynamics coupledwith a V8 power plant allowed thefairly large four-door sedan to handlewell and achieve 100 miles per hour.

I was able to see the 1947 TatraT-87 that just the month before wasthe featured vehicle and on the coverof Hemmings Sports & ExoticMagazine. This was my first timeseeing a Tatra in person and the carjust seems so advanced for its time.It had three headlights for better visibility at night. It has a large reardorsal fin that actually improvedaerodynamics (no it’s not for satelliteradio!). The front doors open likesuicide doors while the rear pair

open conventionally. It is no wonderthese cars can easily trade in the sixfigure range.

Jeff Lane himself is a very interesting guy with encyclopedicknowledge of his car collection.

He gave me a personal tourof the museum and indulged mymany questions. When I ask Jeff ifhe could keep only five cars from thecollection, he gives me the followinglist:

1. The 1955 MG TF that hebegan restoring when he was 12years old and used to take his driver’sexam.

2. A 1919 Leyat Replica, whichis a propeller-driven vehicle thatresembles an airplane in manyrespects.

3. The smallest productionvehicle ever made – the Peel P-50.

4. The Tatra T-87 discussedabove

5. 1965 Matra Djet 5 After hearing Lane’s list of

keepers, I decided to check out thesmallest of the small, the Peel P-50.Manufactured on the Isle of Mann, there were only about 50 of thesepint-sized cars ever made. Their topspeed is less than 35 miles per hourand they were meant to scoot aboutthe island. There is no reverse gear,so if you wanted to go backwardsyou literally had to pick it up from a

handle mounted on the rear and dragit back. With Lane’s permission, my14-year-old son tried turning it

around and he easily lifted the backwheels of the little car and moved it.The popularity of the Peel P-50 hasgrown ever since Jeremy Clarksontest drove one on Top Gear severalyears ago, which included him cruising around inside the BBC’soffice building (see Series 10,Episode 3 in 2007). This past spring

one sold for a record $175,000 at theSotheby’s auction at Amelia Island.Fun fact – 43 of these cars will fit in astandard two car garage!

While I was familiar with the P-50 from Top Gear, I was less familiar with the French made MatraDjet that Lane mentioned. The Djetwas a mid-engined, fiberglass bodiedcar whose closest competitor wasprobably the Lotus Elan. Weighing inat just 1,000 pounds and with a 79horsepower Renault engine, the Djetwas a popular racecar. I am captivat-ed by its styling and some peoplehave suggested its sleek front end

resembles the Opel GT. After I left theLMM, I immediately begin research-ing the Djet and how much one willcost me – I am smitten!

I was naturally interested in seeing many of the mainstreamEuropean brands in the LMM collec-tion such as MG, Lotus, Lancia, AlfaRomeo, Citroen, Renault, Porsche,Fiat, and DKW. But there is so muchmore! There is a huge collection ofmicrocars, amphibious vehicles,Honda Kei cars, one-of-a-kind cars, military vehicles, Indy and other race-cars, and propeller driven cars andbikes. In fact, the LMM has at least

one vehicle covering every letter ofthe alphabet.

No visit to the LMM would becomplete without strolling outside tothe back parking lot to see the only vehicle too large to fit inside themuseum. The LARC-LX is anamphibious military vehicle thatmeasures 52 feet long and 20 feethigh. It has four-wheel drive and eachwheel is powered by its own dieselengine. It also is capable of four-wheel steering and each tire standsnine feet high. The LARC was capableof transporting 60 tons from ocean toinland across heavy seas and steepinclines. The LMM has a really coolvideo showing Jeff Lane driving theLARC through Nashville late at nightto deliver the vehicle to the museumin person.

While Ted Leonsis’ bucket listset some pretty lofty goals, the LMMis worthy of any car enthusiast’s personal bucket list. My visit to theLMM exceeded all of my expectationsand it is among the very best andmost interesting auto museums eastof the Mississippi, maybe beyond. The BMW centennial exhibit will runfor the remainder of the year and more information is available atwww.lanemotormuseum.org.

From the manufacturer reps to theshow models, everyone wasready for the summer break.

As the last major auto show of theseason, there was a “loose” feel tothis show. The smiles weren’t forced– they were real. At some exhibits,VW in particular, it was bit anxious. Those folks couldn’t wait for thisyear’s major auto show season to beover.

Wonder why? By the way, there were NO

diesel cars on display at this year’sNew York show.

I was eager to see this year’sBMW New York Auto Show exhibit.Having a rather quiet Los Angelesshow exhibit, it would seem fittingthat BMW would end the 2016 majorAuto Show season with a bang.

new 7 Series to be successful, it mustbe as groundbreaking as the E32. It must be the “Ultimate DrivingMachine” in the premium sedan segment, not a vehicle solely focusedon chasing the Mercedes S-class or Audi A8. We’ll know if BMW followed his path once we have sometime behind the wheel.

BMW did not become the performance luxury brand bench-mark by following the crowd, so weasked Dr. Christian Vogt, the newBMW NA Manager, head of ProductStrategy and Market Intelligence,

amortizing the use of these compo-nents over several product lines, itwill not only decrease the paybacktime for BMW’s considerable invest-ment, but also hopefully increase thenet margins in the “i” vehicles.

In addition to the refreshed 7 Series receiving the 2016 WorldLuxury Car Award, there were twoproduct debuts at which two newvariations of the all-new 7 Series –the BMW Alpina B7 and the M760LixDrive. In my humble opinion, thiswas a great move for BMW. Thesemodels further distinguish the all-new 7 Series from the segment salesleader – Mercedes S-class. For the

So imagine my surprise when Idiscovered that the New York BMWexhibit was just as low key as the LosAngeles show.

This year’s BMW New YorkAuto Show exhibit was all about thenew 7 Series and new branding –“iPerformance”.

With the new “iPerformance”designation, BMW’s hybrid vehiclestrategy is complete. With this designation BMW will have the sameplug-in hybrid technology that isused on the i3 and the i8. In short, ifyou buy a BMW hybrid vehicle, you’ll have the same electric motor, abattery made with the same cells, and the same electronic control systems as the “i” vehicles. By

about the lack of diesel vehicles in theBMW display. In typical German fashion, his straightforward reply wasthat BMW NA diesel-car sales have fall-en to less than 1.5% of total car sales.Surprisingly, the demand for dieselSAVs in North America continues to bestrong. And despite the highly publi-cized VW scandal, global demand fordiesel vehicles continues to be strong. So as I wrote in my BMW X5d and JeepGrand Cherokee review, there is not abetter time for the BMW enthusiast topurchase a BMW diesel. And as I saw induring my recent trip to SouthernCalifornia, diesel is still considerablyless expensive than gasoline.

The balance of the exhibit wasalmost identical to the Los Angelesshow, sans the Motorrad display. It wasnice to see an M1, though I would havepreferred to have that vehicle next to thei8 and the M6 Gran Coupe. I would havealso have liked to see an RLL M6 racecaron display.

Unsettling is probably the bestword to describe my reaction to the NewYork BMW exhibit. One of the very nicepublic relations managers stated thatafter being in business for 100 years, they now have 100 distinct products. Now, that is counting sub-brands andversions such as M-performance and i-Performance. And while the businessworld might celebrate such an accom-plishment, to me, that is a problem.

My experience has taught me thatafter the initial success of launching anew sub-brand or product variation, thatsame product immediately becomes aburden on margins. The productrequires advertising and later, incentives,in order to maintain sales. The dealersneed to have the sales, marketing, parts, and service resources to support it. And product developmentresources are required for mid-cycleenhancements and all-new versions.

Inevitably, when the sales and marketing teams are facing decreasingsales, they start coming up with absurdreasons as to why. Most likely, theyargue that to the BMW driving dynamicsmust be “toned downed” a bit (e.g., beLexus-like) in order to increase market appeal. Based on the recent

generation 3 and 5 Series launches, I suspect that these folks prevail.

And after learning that BMW nowoffers 100 products, it’s clear that thesales and marketing team prevailedwhen they argued that with the strengthof the brand, BMW would successfullyincrease market share by offering a vehicle for every purpose and purse. That works initially, but in the end dragsdown the BMW image. I wonder howmany 5 Series GT owners are wonderingwhy BMW is not showing them any love.

Having driven the M235i and 340i,it’s clear that a strong core of “truebelievers” still exists at BMW. And afterthe BMW AG CEO, Harald Kruger, received a reported less-than-friendlyreception after presenting the futureBMW strategy with the investment community, one hopes that he will callfor a product rationalization campaignwith the goal of focusing BMW on building Ultimate Driving Machines.

If Mr. Kruger is seeking an automo-tive benchmark on successfully increasesales while not abandoning core values, products, and customers, I suggestSubaru. And if he is seeking an effective, low cost way to revitalize and legitimizeBMWs Ultimate Driving Machine image,I suggest contacting Bob Lutz.

While the BMW exhibit was quiet, there were many notable products at this show.

The new Chrysler Pacifica minivanis outstanding. This Pacifica combinesGerman engineering, American utility, and Italian design. If it’s as fun to driveas have been reported and they improvethe product quality, it will have Toyotaand Honda worried. Toyota and Hondawould even be more worried if the Italianduchies running the Chrysler brandsallowed for the development and launchof a distinct Dodge version of thePacifica. Having driven the 2016 MiniCooper Clubman and the 2016 BMWX1, we know it’s possible to develop twodistinct products from the same chassis.

Even Cadillac realizes that the all-new CT6 will have a minimal impact fortheir image to help their sales. Simplyspeaking, it looks way too much like theslow selling ATS and CTS. However thenew XT5 will be a worthy replacement to

the SRX and should give the bloatedninja-looking Lexus RX a run for itsmoney.

Speaking of Lexus, they are continuing their “Toyotafication” of theperformance luxury segment. Theirconstant Toyotathon sales events, Priussales drop, and failed truck strategy haveforced them to rely on Lexus for profits. And no one is better at making a productfor every purpose or purse than Toyota.BMW seems to be falling into this sametrap. I did have some fun at the Scion,Toyota, and Lexus exhibits by askingToyota Motor Sales folks about whyToyota was dropping the Scion brand(are you listening, Mr. Kruger?). Insteadof answering the question, we talked alot of baseball.

Audi was rightfully pushing howits endurance racing improves its production products. But their arro-gance did not go undetected. Whiletheir products are great and their salesare doing well, they seem to have drunktoo much of their bathwater and arestarting on a road to Abilene.

Mercedes continues their “any-thing BMW can do Mercedes can dobetter” product strategy. Unlike BMW,Mercedes has stayed focused on making great core products rather thandiluting their product developmentresources on tangential products andtechnologies. In my opinion, that’s the

reason why the Mercedes S-class stillhandily outsells the all-new BMW 7Series. After inspecting the veryimpressive Mercedes products, it’s clearthat the BMW engineers, designers, andmarketers need again to use Mercedesas their “good enemy” when developingfuture BMW products.

After last year’s New York show weleft with the feeling that BMW was keeping their powder dry for an all-outnew product blitz to celebrate their 100thyear anniversary. This year’s quiet LosAngeles and New Year auto showsmakes us wonder if BMW is experiencing the paradox of leadership. It’s easy to become great when you arechasing a leader (e.g, “good enemy”).But once you’re in the lead, the easyroad is down.

Perhaps BMW is following one ofLutz’s Laws – when everyone else isdoing something, don’t – by shiftingtheir media communications strategy to targeted, invitation only events. But they should also throw us loyalBMW enthusiast a bone at the majorauto shows.

Let’s hope at this year’s Legends ofthe Autobahn/Laguna Seca HistoricRace event, which is celebrating BMW’s100 years, BMW gives us a reason tocelebrate by them showing that theyagain are refocusing on building“Ultimate Driving Machines.”

(Top and Above) The all new B7 Alpina – once you sit in it – you’llnever want to leave!

(Below from Left) The new Cadillac XT5 – stupid name, good product. The all new Chrysler Pacifica – Chrysler is again the “King of Minivans”!

The Vintage BMW Event Makes a Move

Ireally don’t like changevery much. For over 15years I have worked at the

same job, lived in the samehome, and even taken thesame family vacation yearafter year. Boring or monot-onous? Perhaps. But I likecontinuity in my life andwhen something works forme, I usually stick with it.

So when Scott Sturdy, the dedicated and energeticcoordinator of “The Vintage”BMW event in North Carolina

(www.atthevintage.com),announced last year that aftera decade in the same townthat it would be moving locations, I was a littleuneasy. It had become myfavorite annual event and it isthe largest gathering of classic BMWs in the country. In all honesty, I was happywith things the way they wereand I didn’t want anything tochange about the weekend.Over the years, my wife and

I had grown to love ourannual visit to the little townof Winston-Salem. It hasquaint restaurants, cuteshops, a hotel with a hugeparking lot that became araging car show every night, and its historic Monrovianvillage with 18th centurybuildings provided the perfect backdrop for the bigcar show.

But change happens andI intended to embrace it. The

good news was that the eventwould be moving toAsheville! Asheville is also a cute southern town wellknown for its connection tothe Biltmore mansion and ahaven for upstart microbrew-eries. The region’s moun-tainous terrain makes forsome beautiful scenery anddrives, and its proximity toSouth Carolina meant theremight be some opportunitiesto visit the BMW factory andperformance center.

(Above) Dr. Peter Stilwell bought his 1965 1800 ti/SA for $1200 almostthirty years ago. He still uses it for vintage racing and hill climbs. (Below)Rob Siegel wrote a whole series of articles about Bryan and Michelle Ach'sfailed attempt to make The Vintage in 2015. They made it this year in theirAgave green 1973 BMW 2002tii without a hiccup.

Of course, the first thing I realized is that Asheville is nearly 2hours farther from the D.C. area thanWinston-Salem. Those extra twohours mattered to my wife who at thetime was suffering from a bad back. You may also be surprised to learnthat some vintage cars lack nicetiesthat many of our readers have grownaccustomed to in their modernBMWs – like cruise control, air con-ditioning, power steering, poweranything, noise insulation, or a 5thgear. While extending the drive by acouple of hours for a weekend eventwas not optimal, it also wasn’t goingto be a deal breaker for us. Andmaybe it would mean that someadditional folks might find it moreconvenient to attend, and I amalways up for meeting new peopleand their cars.

After an uneventful drive down,we arrived at the hotel and werepleasantly surprised by its ameni-ties, including a well-needed onsitebar and restaurant. We then ven-tured out to explore the vast array ofcars gathered in the parking lot. Those of us who attended TheVintage in Winston-Salem remem-ber the large back parking lot of thehost hotel that was the heartbeat ofthe gathering. You know you areamongst car lovers when they caremore about the size and shape of thehotel parking lot than any of its otherfacilities. In switching venues, theevent coordinator was forced to picka new host hotel in Asheville thatwould be compared to our hotel inWinston-Salem and its muchbeloved parking lot. While somefolks found that the parking lot at thenew Asheville hotel lacked a largeunified area for cars and people tohang out, others disagreed. Onething is for sure – no one can denythere was still a huge gathering inthe parking lot even though someintermittent rain showers could havekept people away.

The Vintage is a whole week-end’s worth of events that includes arally, scenic drives, and a main eventcar show on Saturday. This year

there was also a special Friday tourof the BMW CCA Foundation locatedin Greenville, South Carolina. Thiswas a real treat since the Foundationis currently housing the road goingversion of the E46 M3 GTR – one ofthe most limited production modelsever made by BMW.

The car show was on Saturdayand held at the Hot Springs Resortand Spa, located about one houraway from the host hotel. The resorthas a very large, grassy field capableof holding about 500 cars and it isnestled neatly within a lovely, scenicmountain range. It was a record yearfor the event, with over 450 cars inattendance. If I had to guess, I wouldsay there were at least one hundred2002s and over two hundred E30s.

However, there was only one1800 Ti/SA (“TISA”) at the car showand it was hard not be drawn to it.These were a limited run of homolo-gation racecars cloaked in the shapeof a four door sedan. Just two hun-dred were made and they were onlysold to drivers with a competitionlicense for racing. They won manyraces and in 1964 took home theGerman National Championship.

Peter Stillwell and his Dadbought the 1965 TISA in 1987 inSanta Barbara, California. It waslisted for sale at $1,500, but withsome savvy negotiation they paidjust $1,200. It was a good invest-ment, as these cars are sometimesfound in museums and rarely arepublicly offered for sale. When they do sell, a good one can bring

GT other than slapping on a set ofround taillights pulled from a 2002and putting a larger 1600cc engineunder the hood. The 1600 GT wasItalian designed and looks very different than anything BMW wasoffering for sale at the time. Chris’car has a personalized license platethat reads “Frua,” paying homage tothe 1600 GT’s famous designer.

Chris’ 1600 GT has just 23,000miles and yet he drove the car all theway from New Hampshire to attendThe Vintage. On Sunday, I followedchapter member Doug Dolan homein his E9 3.0 CSi and we had thegood fortune to pass the 1600 GTcruising along Interstate 81. It wasso cool to see the little car out in the wild.

Rob Siegel, the Roundel maga-zine’s resident “Hack Mechanic,”made the trip in the Chamonix 19722002tii that he appears with on thecover his book. This was the car thathe wrote about buying in Maine several years ago for less than$5,000. This was its maiden voyageto the Vintage and now I believe thatit really does exist. Rob has a new

book that isnear releaseand it will beon sale at the upcomingOktoberfest.

Rob intro-duced me to

around $100,000. Peter and his Dad worked on

the car together as a team until hisfather developed pancreatic cancerand passed away the following year.Ever since, Peter has kept a picture ofhis father taped to the glove box.Over the years the car has been usedas was originally intended, in manyraces and more recently in hillclimbs. And Peter feels like his fatheris always along for the ride. Talkingto Peter is a little bit like talking tothe Dos Equis commercial’s “mostinteresting man in the world,” excepthe is real.

Another rare car is Chris Auty’s1967 BMW 1600 GT. These carswere originally manufactured by Glasuntil BMWpurchased thecompany in1966 andinherited theirline of cars.BMW did littleto change the

Bryan Ach and his wife Michellefrom West Orange, New Jersey.Bryan was made famous last yearthrough a series of Rob’s articlestitled - “A Funny Thing Happened onthe Way to The Vintage.”Unfortunately, Brian’s 1973 2002tiihad mechanical issues on the waydown to the 2015 Vintage anddespite Rob’s best efforts to diagnosethe car, it never ended up making thetrip. Rob spent the next severalweeks trying to troubleshoot Bryan’scar until he found the culprit – a broken fuel injector. This year Brianand Rob made the trip together andwithout any hiccups.

Way too many people from ourchapter attended for me to try to listeveryone, but one notable memberwas Jim Gerock. Jim recently fin-ished a multi-year restoration of his1969 Riviera Blue 2002ti. Jim is anengineer by trade and his attention todetail is so good that he makes people with OCD jealous. His car isstunning and it was no surprisewhen it received a special award during the event’s closing cere-monies. Although his car arrived inan enclosed trailer, he drove it hardover 400 miles during the weekend, including many jaunts in the rain.

Change never comes easy forme, but even with a new location TheVintage is still my favorite annualevent. It is among the greatest groupof car enthusiasts I have ever seen

gathered in one place. I get to hangout with friends that I see all yearround and some others that I only seeonce a year. It is often said, but nevermore true – it is the people and nottheir cars, that make an event special.A lot of hard work went into makingAsheville a success, and I know witheach passing year it will only get bigger and better. If you have fiveminutes to spare, there is a coolvideo of this year’s car show withsome aerial footage located at:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kld1Q2Fahks.

For most people, Friday night is the night when most people spend theirevenings out, relaxing from the work week. However, with autocross season in full swing, for some of us Friday night is spent completing last

minute updates to our cars in preparation for our day on the autocross course.Night brings the potential oftroubled sleep with the thrill ofthe track. Our Saturdays beginwith the NCC Autocross teamgoing to course location for theday, cleaning off the parking lot, putting out the cones to markout the track, and setting up thetiming equipment.

Meanwhile, Autocrosscommittee members are help-ing participants check in andmake sure that cars are techinspected. Tech inspection consists of ensuring everythingloose is out of the car, includingfloor mats, as well as checkingboth the engine compartmentand the wheels to make sureeverything is in order. Once thecourse is laid out and the carsinspected, the course is opened

to participants to learn the course. After a quick drivers meeting, drivers are atthe ready to start their day of fun.

Since our last article (dB for May & June As The Season Starts, So DoesRace Prep), we have had two open events, the first “Test and Tune” of the year

and the only Novice School forthe season. Strangely, for mostevents, we’ve had rain either thenight before or during theevents so far this season. Thatdoesn’t dampen our spirits norcancel events. In fact, it makesit more exciting. There’s nothing like learning about carcontrol in a track situation, purposefully putting your carinto a slide to see if you cancontrol it into a proper slide. Of course, just remember, ifyou feel like you are losingcontrol, both feet in, i.e brakesand clutch or the big brakepedal, to bring the car undercontrol. Remember, we are outthere to have fun; there is nopoint in risking yourself or yourcar to be a hero of the day.

Our season report should beginwith our “Test and Tune” and the“Novice School.” We had a healthycrowd out for both events. The “Testand Tune” is a great way to get seattime for experienced autocrossers.Since the event isn’t timed or scored, participants have as many runs asthey want to practice. Similar to theTest and Tune, the Novice Schoolallows new autocross enthusiasts tolearn the basics of autocross andtheir cars. Both the Test and Tuneand the Novice school prepares participants for the season’s pointsevents.

For the points events, ourcourse designer, AJ Aviles, schemedup the most intricate but fun coursesthat challenges even our best drivers.Scoring for the points events are broken down by classes: Showroom,Tuner, Modified, Novice, Mini, PAX,and ProPAX. Details about what cars

It would be an understatement to say that this year’s Washington, D.C. metroarea winter weather has been strange. From eating Christmas dinner on theoutdoor patio to shoveling several inches of snow, we’ve

watched Old Man Winter toy with Mother Nature as the land-scape has varied from “almost Spring Bloom” to “WinterWonderland.”

As a Southern California native, this strange winterweather has been torture.

Last winter, it was clear that my 2012 135i convertiblewas “in for the season.” It was prepped for winter storage, complete with the trickle charger. Anticipating the same winter weather pattern, I prepped my BMW to stay in thegarage until the weather and roads were “safe.” Because ofthis winter season’s warm weather, my convertible and I did quite a bit of explor-ing through the back roads of Southern, Central and Northern Virginia.

However a winter weather “blast” from mid-January through early Februaryresulted in my 135i going dormant again. Even though there was some good

weather between blasts, the salt, mud, and gravel on the roads made me hesitantto drive the car. Covered and hooked to a trickle charger, my 135i convertible

seemed to plead with me to take it out every time I went into our garage.

So when (what I hope to be) the last snowstorm wasfollowed by rain, washing away the salt, mud, and gravel, the conditions were again right to drive the convertible. Andthe excuse I used to drive the back roads fromFredericksburg to Charlottesville was that we needed somegood fried chicken for dinner.

About a year ago, I was at the University of VirginiaMedical Center. Being lunchtime and desiring somethingbetter than hospital cafeteria food, I asked an employee for

a good local place to eat. She referred me to the Wayside Takeout and Cateringfor fried chicken. Food tastes are personal preference, but allow me to state thatthis was the best fried chicken I had ever eaten. And when I ate there a secondtime, I noted that patronizing this restaurant would make a good excuse for a back

road food run.The route I took was to travel

through Fredericksburg on Route 3 toRoute 231 through Gordonsville in toCharlottesville. The return trip wouldtake be briefly on I-64, exiting forRoute 208 to the southern part ofFredericksburg.

The Fredericksburg/Spotsylvaniaarea is quite popular with Civil Warbuffs, especially those that favored theConfederacy. Four battles were foughtin this area (Battle of Fredericksburg,Battle of Spotsylvania Court House,Battle of the Wilderness, and the Battleof Chancellorsville) with theConfederacy victorious in one (Battleof Fredericksburg) and the others considered “draws”. And the parksdedicated to preserving the appropri-ate amounts of these battlefields are wonderful place to explore.

There’s still a Civil War in thisarea, but this time it’s between the cityof Fredericksburg and county ofSpotsylvania on the road conditions ofRoute 1 (Jefferson Davis Highway)and Route 3. These two major routesare woefully inadequate to handle theamount of traffic from the rapid “bed-room community” development. Andhaving made interesting concessionsto the greedy developers, bothFredericksburg City and Spotsylvania

County seem to be at a loss of how tomodernize these roads. My warning toall my BMW CCA friends who wouldlike to visit this wonderful area for aweekend trip is simple – stay off Route1 and Route 3 from noon to 4 PM. Thetrafficconditions on these two roadsmake Beltway commuting trafficseems like a walk in the park.

Even with my shortcut aroundthe obnoxious “Central Park” shop-ping area (thank you Carl D. Silver), it was 45 minutes before I reachedRoute 231. From there, the drive wasbrisk, pleasant, and beautiful.

This part of Virginia is JamesMadison country. It’s worth a trip to Montpelier, not only to see the mansion and tour the grounds, but also see how the DuPonts redeco-rated portions of the mansion afterthey purchased it. My first time atMontpelier was to watch aSteeplechase. Before that event was a Jack Russell Terrier puppy race.Watching the little rascals jump andrun motivated my family and I to adopttwo Jack Russell terriers!

The towns of Orange andGordonsville are quaint and pleasant. There’s a rather impressive HarleyDavidson dealership in Orange, whichserves me as a halfway marker to Charlottesville. Driving through

Gordonsville, I noticed a banner for“Porkapalozza”. While I wasn’t sureabout the origin or rationale for this event, I did think that it would bedelicious!

Entering Charlottesville by Route250, we found ourselves driving byBMW of Charlottesville. It was clear tome that the area had become muchmore affluent since I was last inCharlottesville 20 years ago. Whatwas once a nice, small town dealer-ship was now a seemingly new andmodern facility.

Route 250 had us drivingthrough much of the University ofVirginia campus to reach our destina-tion. Simply speaking, University ofVirginia is cone of the prettiest campuses in the Unites States. Onecan see why Thomas Jefferson advocated that such a grand universitybe built here, but also why he wouldreturn at every opportunity to hisMonticello home.

Reaching the Wayside Takeoutand Catering location, I orderedenough chicken and side dishes fordinner and leftovers. I’m sure thechicken recipe is a secret, but theysomehow have the right amount ofspice in the batter and the meat is quitetender and tasty. The batter and fryingresult in a golden, crispy skin that

stays crispy even after the hour plusdrive back to Fredericksburg. In my humble opinion, this chicken isworth the drive.

The return trip on Route 208 tookus through the Lake Anna area.Coincidentally, Lake Anna was thelocation I used for my Roundel reviewof the new BMW 128i convertible. While the many wineries in the areadid tempt me to stop, I had a hungryfamily waiting at home.

Following dinner, I washed myconvertible (using my favorite MothersCalifornia Gold Wash and Wax) beforedriving it in to the garage. As I wipedthe car dry, I thought how this was theideal time to drive the route I had takento Charlottesville. During the lateSpring, Summer, and early Fallweekends the congestion from themany car and motorcycle clubs ontheir weekend excursions made thattrip unattractive. During that time ofyear, I’ll drive the back roads route during the middle of the week but onthe weekend, I’ll take the Interstates toCharlottesville.

I’m glad that I found the excuseand the ideal road conditions to drivemy BMW. And I hope the Groundhogwas right – I’d like to drive my 135iconvertible again soon!
