BUILDING POSITIVE SELF ESTEEM
How Do You See Yourself
• Self Concept – The view you have of yourself
– Should be realistic awareness of strengths and weaknesses
Unrealistic self concept
• Focus only on faults and weaknesses
How Self-Concept Develops
• Begins in early years, but develops as you grow
• People that are given support, encouragement, and love tend to develop a positive self concept
• Remarks given by family, friends, teachers and way they act toward you can reinforce the view you have of yourself
Self-Concept and Self - Esteem
• Closely tied to self concept is your self esteem
• SELF CONCEPT – way you feel about yourself
• SELF ESTEEM – way you feel about body, mind, emotions are all part of self esteem
Low self Esteem
• Often linked to an Unrealistic self concept
• Self esteem is formed, partly, by messages the you receive from people
• Also formed by messages you send yourself
Self Esteem and Your Health
• Self esteem has a great impact on your health
• People with high self esteem like themselves and take care of themselves
• People with low self esteem are more likely to be involved with high risk behavior such as risk taking, alcohol, drugs
Improving your Self Esteem
• Focus on successes
• Send yourself positive messages
• Set realistic goals
• Ask people for help when you need it
• Learn from your mistakes
