St John’s College Chapel

Since the early thirteenth century the site of St John’s College, first as a monastic house and then as the College, has had a place of Christian worship. Our long tradition of worship is continued with regular services enriched by the College’s outstanding choral tradition. Members of the public are welcome at all Choral Services. These are printed in BOLD TYPE in this list. Surplices are provided in the Chapel, and are worn by members of the College on Sundays, at Evensong on Saturdays, and on other days marked in this list with the letter S.

Evensong

The service of Evensong can be followed on the white cards in the stalls. The words of the psalm appointed for the day will be found in the red prayer book and the words of the hymn in the green hymn book. In accordance with the spirit of the Book of Common Prayer (a portion of) the Morning Psalms are sung during the first half of term, and (a portion of) the Evening Psalms during the second half. Our lessons at Evensong this term comprise selections from the Prophets and the entirety of the Gospel of Mark. Considered by most scholars the earliest of the Gospels, St Mark's narrative is wonderfully dramatic with a real sense of immediacy to its episodic structure, and yet this is no naive storytelling as key theological themes are developed to support the needs of disciples in the way of the Cross.

Sunday Sermons Faith in Challenging Times: A series of sermons at Sunday evensong will address a wide range of issues. Further details may be found at: http://www.joh.cam.ac.uk/chapel_and_choir/chapel/preachers

Sung Eucharist

The service can be followed in the red Sung Eucharist booklets. The epistle and Gospel reading will be found on the separate white sheet. These can be found on a table at the entrance to the Chapel. Hymns are found in the green hymn book in the stalls. All those who are communicant members of their own church are most welcome to receive communion.

No collections are taken during services. An alms dish is provided for a retiring collection as you leave the Chapel.

All donations are given to Charity for details see the notice board in the Ante-Chapel.

All hymn numbers refer to ‘The New English Hymnal’ unless otherwise stated
