Choral Setting: Summsion in F

Introit: Crux Fidelis - King John VI Portugal - Choir

Processional: As sons of the day and daughters of light

1 As sons of the day and daughters of light, no longer we sleep like creatures of night: For Jesus has died that with him we may live; by all he has given, we learn how to give.

2 One body in Christ, let all play their part: the lazy be warned, the timid take heart; let those who are hurt never pay back with wrong, but serve one another: together be strong!

3 Be constant in prayer, at all times rejoice, in all things give thanks let God hear your voice! alive to the Spirit, alert to his word, test all things, and hold to what pleases the Lord.

4 May God who first called, gave peace and made whole, preserve us from fault in body and soul: our Lord Jesus Christ keep us firm in his grace until at his coming we meet face to face.

1 We love the place, O God,

in which your honour dwells:

the joy of your abode,

all earthly joy excels.

2 We love the house of prayer:

for where Christ’s people meet,

our risen Lord is there

to make our joy complete.

3 We love the word of life,

the word that tells of peace,

of comfort in the strife

and joys that never cease.

4 We love the holy feast where,

nourished with this food,

by faith we feed on Christ,

his body and his blood.

We greet the people near us, saying ‘Peace be with you’ / ‘Kia tau te rangimarie’.

During the next hymn the bread and wine, symbols of Christ’s life, are brought to the altar; our offerings of money that support the mission and ministry of the Cathedral are collected and brought forward also.

Offertory Hymn: Take my gifts and let me love you

3

Take whatever I can offer – gifts that I have yet to find, skills that I am slow to sharpen, talents of the hand and mind, things made beautiful for others in the place where I must be: take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me.

All are welcome to share the bread and wine of Christ’s life, or to receive a blessing - please come to the altar rails via the centre aisle and return to your seats via the side aisles (or use the ramp if necessary and take a place at the rear altar rails) Please advise an usher if you need to have communion served in your seat.

1 Take my gifts and let me love you, God who first of all loved me, gave me light and food and shelter, gave me life and set me free. Now, because your love has touched me, I have love to give away; now the bread of love is rising, loaves of love to multiply!

2

Take the fruit that I have gathered from the tree your Spirit sowed, harvest of your own compassion, juice that makes the wine of God; spiced with humour, laced with laughter – flavour of the Jesus life, tang of risk and new adventure, taste and zest beyond belief.

During communion, the Choir will sing: Be still for the presence of the Lord - arr. Hughes

The Blessing: Rev’d David van Oeveren

We share notices and news

Recessional Hymn: Lift high the cross

Refrain: Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his glorious name.

Come Christian people, sing your praises, shout! If we are silent, even stones cry out.

Jesus you wept to see our human strife; teach us compassion for each human life.

Peace was your plea, and peace your loving theme; let peace be our passport, peace a living dream.

Great is the cost of walking on this road - to follow and suffer with the Son of God.

Worlds to be born and children yet to be, come take up this song into eternity.

AA87 - Shirley Murray Tune: Crucifer [CP499]

The Dismissal: Go now to love and serve the Lord. Go in peace. Amen. We go in the name of Christ.

Cathedral’s Golden Anniversary

Te Pihopatanga to elect new leader

The stage has been set for the election of a new leader for Te Pihopatanga o Aotearoa, the Maori Anglican Church. The 2017 session of Te Runanganui – the biennial synod of the Maori Church – will convene at Whakatu Marae in Nelson on the late afternoon of Thursday, 7th Septem-ber, and run through until next Sunday afternoon, 10th September.

By far the weightiest task before its 130 members is the nomination of a successor to the late Archbishop Brown Turei as Pi-hopa o Aotearoa, or Bishop of Aotearoa.

Te Runanganui will spend the first half of its time as an electoral college, and Archbish-ops Philip Richardson and Winston Halapua have appointed Archbishop-emeritus John Paterson – who has a long connection with Te Pihopatanga and is a fluent te reo speak-er – as commissary, or overseer, for that college.

Archbishop John will deliver his charge to the college, during the kauhau, or sermon, at Thursday evening’s karakia, and he’s ex-pected to reflect on the responsibilities of Te Pihopa o Aotearoa, and on the hopes and dreams invested in that office.

The college’s legal adviser will then outline the process to be followed during the elec-toral college – and Archbishop John will then invite the five Maori bishops to pre-sent their vision statements for each of their Hui Amorangi.

Archbishop John has asked that Anglicans uphold the election in their prayers. Thurs-day’s powhiri and evening karakia will be held at Whakatu Marae. The remaining ses-sions of the college, and the later business sessions of Te Runanganui, will be held in Nelson’s Trafalgar Events Centre.
