Wed. 16 November – talk by Nick Hamilton of Barnsdale. We have engaged the services of Nick Hamilton, an experienced gardener, horticulturalist of 25 years standing, writer and speaker – although, of course, he is best known as the son of the late Geoff Hamilton who educated and entertained TV audiences weekly with the horticultural goings on at Barnsdale. In Geoff’s time, Barnsdale was little more than a television set; since his untimely death Nick has transformed it into a garden attracting many visitors annually.

Page 9: Priest in Charge Rev’d Curate Rev’d Lay Reader …...2016/06/05  · 12 Trinity 3 Village celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday 13 Give thanks for the Queen and all inspiring

In keeping with Geoff’s ideas though, the garden is still one where great effects are achieved without lavish spending. Note the date Wednesday November 16

th, the subject

“Gardening in Shade” (chosen by popular vote at the Club’s

AGM) and the ticket prices (as last year for the talk by Bob

Flowerdew) Members £5.00, Visitors £7.50. The committee

looks forward to seeing you there.

Do you know anyone who, for any reason, would appreciate prayer,

a visit, or perhaps to receive communion at home

Please tell Deborah Hodge, Authorised Pastoral Assistant, and she

will get in touch. 01388 745455

VESTRY REPORT: funerals; baptisms and weddings

We published the banns of marriage for George Rae and Carol

Kelly, both of the parish of Brancepeth, marrying at St

Brandon's on 17th

June 2016.

THE ARCHIVES AND HISTORY GROUP ARE

CELEBRATING THEIR 10TH ANNIVERSARY IN

APRIL/MAY 2016.

A permanent glass fronted display board has been

commissioned and is on one of the walls in the Committee

Room of the village hall. It is intended that differing

displays of items held in the Archives collection will be on

show there. We hope these will be of interest to residents

and visitors.

BRANCEPETH WAR MEMORIAL

NOW A GRADE II LISTED MONUMENT

Historic England recently invited comments as to whether our War

Memorial has special architectural or historic interest. The Archives

Group submitted information regarding this and, in April 2016, the War

Memorial became a Grade II listed monument with Historic England.

The reasons given for this listing are as follows:

Page 11: Priest in Charge Rev’d Curate Rev’d Lay Reader …...2016/06/05  · 12 Trinity 3 Village celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday 13 Give thanks for the Queen and all inspiring

Historic interest: as an eloquent witness to the tragic impact of world

events on this local community and the sacrifice it has made in the

conflicts of the twentieth century

Architectural interest: an elegant memorial cross in the medieval style

Group value: with the church of St. Brandon (Grade I listed, the park of

Brancepeth Castle (Grade II listed) and a number of other listed

structures.

FRIDAY 1st JULY, 2016

Performances at 2.00 p.m. and 7.30 p.m.

in the Village Hall.

The film lasts approximately 80 minutes, plus an introduction.

July 1st 1916 marks the 100th anniversary of the first

day of the Battle of the Somme – one of the worst of

the Western Front WW1 campaigns. Four men from

Brancepeth and Wooley Colliery were killed on that day.

To commemorate this, the Archives and History Group

are arranging two showings of the Battle of the Somme

film.

This is a documentary/propaganda film produced by the

Government at the time and released nationwide on 21st

August 1916. It was seen by huge audiences in the UK,

Page 12: Priest in Charge Rev’d Curate Rev’d Lay Reader …...2016/06/05  · 12 Trinity 3 Village celebrations for the Queen’s 90th birthday 13 Give thanks for the Queen and all inspiring

barely a month after the events it depicted. Cinema-goers

hailed it as an opportunity to see the reality of the

Western Front for the first time, and to share the

experiences of the soldiers who were fighting there.

Admission is free but donations towards the cost of hiring

the hall and overheads would be appreciated.

“If the exhibition of this picture all over the world does

not end War, God help civilisation.”

“The most important and imposing picture of the war.”

David Lloyd George

Brancepeth Art Exhibition – call for paintings…

In June the BCA is hosting a village art exhibition – please see

event poster in this newsletter. A number of local artists have

kindly agreed to exhibit and sell their paintings. In addition to

this, we would like to have a section of the hall dedicated to

‘pre-loved, second-hand paintings’. If you have a painting(s)

that you would like to sell, or donate to BCA for inclusion

in a silent auction- to help raise funds for the Village Hall -
