CHANGING THE WORLD STARTS AT HOME

Book of Acts Pastor Ken Goodban Part 1 9.20.20

Change Starts Right Here Acts 1

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere – in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NLT

2 Foundational Truths About Church

1. God Fully Empowers His Church.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you.” Acts 1:8 NLT

2. God Focuses on Beings, Not Buildings. “...And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Acts 1:8 NLT

4 Fundamentals of Church-Changing Prayer

1. DEVOTION: Prayer Glues Us Together. “Then the apostles returned to Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives, a distance of half a mile. When they arrived, they went to the upstairs room of the house where they were staying. Here are the names of those who were present: Peter, John, James, Andrew, Philip, Thomas, Bartholomew, Matthew, James (son of Alphaeus), Simon (the zealot), and Judas (son of James). They all met together and were constantly united in prayer, along with Mary the mother of Jesus, several other women, and the brothers of Jesus.” Acts 1:12-14 NLT

2. ACTION: Prayer Moves Us to Step up. “During this time, when about 120 believers were together in one place, Peter stood up and addressed them.” Acts 1:15 NLT

3. REVELATION: Prayer Unlocks God’s Word to Us. “Brothers,” he said, “the Scriptures had to be fulfilled concerning Judas, who guided those who arrested Jesus. This was predicted long ago by the Holy Spirit, speaking through King David...Peter continued, “This was written in the book of Psalms, where it says, ‘Let his home become desolate, with no one living in it.’ It also says, ‘Let someone else take his position.’ ” Acts 1:16-20 NLT

4. DECISION: Prayer Leads Us to God Choices. “So now we must choose a replacement for Judas from among the men who were with us the entire time we were traveling with the Lord Jesus— from the time he was baptized by John until the day he was taken from us. Whoever is chosen will join us as a witness of Jesus’ resurrection.” So they nominated two men: Joseph called Barsabbas (also known as Justus) and Matthias. Then they all prayed, “O Lord, you know every heart. Show us which of these men you have chosen as an apostle to replace Judas in this ministry, for he has deserted us and gone where he belongs.” Then they cast lots, and Matthias was selected to become an apostle with the other eleven.” Acts 1:21-26 NLT

4 Key Factors for Discovering God’s Will...

1. Scripture 2. Common 3. Prayer 4. Casting Lots

DAILY LIFE GROUP GUIDE _____________Sept.21-26 Use this guide this week to help you spend time with God every day. As you go through the daily devotional, reflect on His Word and pray specifically for God to guide your steps each day. Take one day at a time - Read, Reflect, and Record your answers. Spend time in prayer for God’s guidance. Share your thoughts & action steps with your LifeGroup. We are Better Together! DAY 1 Read Acts 1:1-11 focusing on Jesus’ Final Instructions. How much time did Jesus spend with these guys and what was His main instructions to them? What did they seem to be focused on here? What did Jesus want them focused on and why? Put yourself in this scene – what are these angels saying to you and what’s your personal takeaway? Pray. DAY 2 Read Acts 1:12-14 focusing on Prayer in the Upper Room. What do you think the conversation was like on the walk to the Upper Room? What do you know about this “Upper Room” and who is in this group? How would you describe their prayer meetings and how long did this last? What will it take to take your prayer life up to the next level and who needs to be involved? Pray. DAY 3 Read Acts 1:15 focusing on Peter Stepping Up to Lead. Does it surprise you that Peter steps up to lead here – why or why not? What do you think made the biggest impact on Peter’s willingness to step up here? Describe the possible difference in Peter at this point – how is he still the same but different? Not everyone can lead, but where in your life is it time for

you to step up? Pray.
