WelcomeSPORT, CHARM AND AUTHENTICITY

A picture-perfect swiss alpine village, Champéry nestles snugly at the foot of the impressive Dents du Midi and Dents Blanches mountain ranges. This is the gateway to the Canton of Valais and to the largest international ski area in the world; the Portes du soleil.

One of the oldest tourist destinations in switzerland, Champéry has striven to maintain its authenticity over the years. like the mellow patina of the centuries-old chalets that line the village street, our heritage and traditions are a vital part of our identity.

This is a place of infinite possibilities and endless adventures for anyone who loves nature, sports and the great outdoors. epicurean guests will appreciate the welcoming atmosphere of a place where ‘the good life’ is a way of life.

We look forward to seeing you in Champéry,

Jean-Philippe BorgeaudPrésident, Champéry Tourisme

It’s homeI love to travel, but what I like best is coming

back home to Champéry and my mountains and my ski area, where everything started…

Camillia Berra, freestyle skier, finalist at the sochi 2014 Olympic Winter games.

It’s peacefulThis place is a haven of peace, where I can really recharge my batteries. I’ve met the nicest people; life is normal here.

Christian Karembeu, former footballer, World Champion 1998.

It’s Maxi-FabulousThe gateway to paradise! The intoxicating pleasure of winter sports;

the ecstasy of idyllic landscapes in summer. The Dents du Midi are the ‘teeth of happiness’ for anyone who sets eyes on them. This is maxi-laughs,

maxi-delicious, maxi-friendship and maxi-the good life. But don’t spread the word… let’s keep it between us!

Olivier Lejeune, comedian, author, director and patron of the Maxi-Rires comedy festival.

TRADITIONS & ‘TERROIR’

Our heritage Although life in the Alps was historically a hardscrabble existence, past generations have

left us with a rich heritage of ancestral knowledge and rural traditions. Champéry’s roots go deep and we have a visceral attachment to our land. There is a distinct flavour to life here; it infuses everything from local dishes to the daily tasks of running a farm to local lore and legends.

Champéry’s Coat of Arms

The three mountains on the coat of arms are the Dent de Bonaveau, the Dent de Barmaz and the Bonavau ridge. The three pine trees represent the three villages in the illiez valley; Champéry, Val-d’illiez and Troistorrents. Finally, the man is Farmer Pery, sowing grain in his field. legend has it that Pery was the first inhabitant to settle in this valley. his field, the ‘Champ à Pery’ gave our town its name.

Architecture

What is a ‘bellows’ roofline? Champéry’s chalets have a style that is unique to the illiez valley. One of the most distinctive characteristics of this style is the plunging ‘bellows’ roofline. the prominent peak at the roof’s ridgepole overhangs the intricately carved wood façades, protecting them from the elements.

TRADITIONS & ‘TERROIR’

Sightseeing 09OPEN-AIR ‘MUSEUM’

This unique exposition is composed of illustrated panels that tell the story of Champéry in the early 19th century through the eyes of gustin, a fictitious Champérolain who left his village as a young lad to become a mercenary in napoleon’s army. in 1863, after a 50-year absence, gustin’s homesickness has brought him back to a village that has changed dramatically… The graphic novel-style panels are placed at intervals along the high street and make for an interesting and informative historical ramble.

THE HIGH STREET

The ‘Rue du Village’ is lined with centuries-old alpine chalets, charming hotels, shops and restaurants. This is the perfect place to admire the traditional architectural details specific to the illiez Valley, from plunging ‘bellows’ rooflines to magnificently sculpted balconies.

THE RUMIèRES SPRING

Built in 1900, the Rumières spring has gained a reputation of almost mythical proportions over the past century. even today, people come from near and far to stock up on this water that is, magical properties aside, undeniably refreshing.

THE CHAMPéRY BELL TOWER - 1726

Classified as an historical monument in 1964, the church bell tower is Champéry’s most distinctive landmark and its ‘crowning’ glory. soaring above the village, the tower ends in a shape reminiscent of a ducal crown, with 4 stone arches surmounted by a lantern.

SKI & SNOWBOARD

One of the best things about Champéry is our proximity to the Portes du soleil. A world-renowned destination for winter sports enthusiasts, the Pds offers an unparalleled network of nearly 200 ski lifts, not to mention the added thrill of being able to criss-cross the border between switzerland and France, navigating by the glacial bulk of Mont Blanc on one side and the rugged Dents du Midi mountain range to the other.

CHAVANETTE THE SWISS WALL

The infamous swiss Wall ranks in the top 10 of the world’s toughest ski slopes. From the summit of Chavanette, the slope plunges downward at a 40° to 55° angle, providing a 400 metre drop over the 1 kilometre slope. Too steep for the snow grooming machines, the bumps at the top regularly attain 2 metres in height, the size of a Volkswagen Beetle!
