ANGEL FIRE RESORT, NEW MEXICO LAUNCHES FIRST WINTER CARNIVAL ON SKI MOUNTAIN & FINAL WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP SHOVEL RACES Ski Resort to Transform into Coney Island-Style Boardwalk for Winter Event ANGEL FIRE, NM - (January 15, 2020) – Angel Fire Resort is doing what no other winter resort has. The northern New Mexico destination is turning their ski mountain into a Coney Island-style boardwalk for the first Winter Carnival. The event will include a full- size Merry-Go-Round at the base of the mountain. Guests can also compete in races and traditional midway games like ring toss, spill the milk, and ax throwing. There will be plenty of prizes and photo opportunities. The Winter Carnival games and rides will be open from noon to 4 pm Thursday, January 30 through Saturday, February 1., and 10 am to noon on Sunday, February 2. All rides and games are free to the public. The weekend winter festivities will also include one final year of the legendary World Championship Shovel Races. The resort is expecting approximately 100 racers to wax up their shovel for the 41 st Annual Angel Fire Resort World Championship Shovel Races. This year, anyone can compete for the coveted World Championship title. Competitors ages six and older are invited to compete in the January 31 - February 1, 2020 event. “We wanted to expand on our family activities for the weekend,” stated Greg Ralph, director of marketing, Angel Fire Resort. “Whether you’re a shovel racer, spectator, skier, or a family just looking for some out-of-the-ordinary outdoor activities, you’ll be hard-pressed to find something more unique than riding a Merry-Go-Round on a ski mountain while watching a shovel racer fly down the mountain.” Shovel racing began as a simple contest in the 1970s when lift operators would ride their shovels down the mountain at the end of their shifts. Racers compete by sitting on the scoop of a standard aluminum grain shovel, handle pointed downhill, and then lift their hands and feet to allow gravity to take them for a ride. The racers are competing for cash, prizes, and final bragging rights. “The World Championship Shovel Races have been a part of our resort’s history for over four decades. While we are so proud of our heritage and how Shovel Racing plays a role in that, we know the event has changed in the past 15 years.
