Cotton Days 2013

Cotton Days 2013 went off without a hitch. This year was very well attended by many

Coolidge residents as well as residents from outside areas, the weather was beautiful for

the whole event. The events as in the past have started out on Friday night with the One

on One Breaking Battle and 1 on 1 open Style Battle. The park was packed with both old

and young to see the battles, we had local talent as well as outside talent. Adam Cordova

organized and headed up the Event. He did an incredible job, each year the talents get

better and better. The Carnival was going full tilt as were the Food and Craft vendors. Friday night was the start

to a good weekend.

We started off Saturday with the Boy Scouts Pancake Breakfast, which was attended very

well. The parade got underway with the 7th Annual Ride to the Ruins Bike Rally leading.

This year's Grand Marshall was in memory of Dave Wicker, long time Coolidge Resident and

Transit Driver for the City of Coolidge, his daughter Starla and his grandchildren repre-

sented him in the parade. The parade was very well attended. Along with Saturday's events, we had the Cotton

Bale Rolling Contests, this year was a little different as we asked the Schools to participate and

any groups who wanted to compete against the other groups. The turnout was great and the competition was fierce.

Also going on in the park was this year's 1st Cheer Competition which also had great participation, we hope to do both

events again next year. This year's lineup included the 1st Officers Bike Rodeo, for Entertain-

ment we had the Positive Attitude Band, A3 Variety Show, Bonnie Lee, Greywolf Band and

Ballet Folklorico. We also had for the first year the Art Walk which proved to be very enter-

taining and well received. The Copper Corridor Mobile Visitor Center was also a hit, the town

of Superior provided it for our Event, we were also able to put in information about Coolidge

and Florence which would continue to travel with the mobile unit.

Every year we have so many volunteers to Thank and without our Sponsors and Supporters,

Cotton Days would not be as successful as it is, The Coolidge Chamber and its Board Mem-

bers would like to Thank Tom Madden & Ed Curan for showing The Copper Corridor

Mobile Visitor Center, Our Parade volunteers: Judy Preston, Ray Murrieta, Doug Mason,

Barbara Hite, Lisa Irwin, Craig Backstrom, Tony Roth and Mayor Tom Shope. Cotton Day

This month’s business spotlights are Scrubs & More and Holiday Inn Express & Suites. The Coolidge Chamber would like to

Thank these businesses for their continued support to Coolidge, and we urge you to keep our small businesses in business by

shopping local every time you can.

Scrubs & More

Sandy Short owner of Scrubs & More started out with as-

sisted living company. The company grew to a large com-

pany. She then sold the company but wasn't ready to re-

tire so she began looking into other things. She had 12

years in the medical profession with assisted living and so

the Scrubs and More was born. She added some medical

supplies, other uniforms and all kinds of trinkets. You can

get your uniform from head to toe.

She understands the tough demand of these professionals, so that

is where the Boutique came in. You can get really unique items for

yourself or a gift for that special person. The other service they offer

is promotional items, small jobs to the big ones. If you have a spe-

cial event or a special meeting and just need one or two coffee mugs

or shirts they can help you.

Scrubs & More has been around for 3 years and have just moved there location to 20892 E Ocotillo Rd., Queen Creek.

Sandy loves working with the people in Coolidge and hopes to open another location here soon. If you would like more

information on what they can do for you give Sandy a call at 520.487.9474 or visit her website www.scrubsnmoreofaz.com

Holiday Inn Express & Suites

Holiday Inn Express & Suites is owned by a native Arizonian from

Globe he loves the rural Arizona and when the opportunity came

available for Florence it was the right fit back in February 2011.

Damon Anderson is the manager and loves the people and the area.

One of the things he see's often but still enjoys is when people walk

into the hotel and they are so surprised at the oasis in the desert. They

take pride in their facilities and it shows. They have a friendly staff and all 18 are local.

They have so much to offer in their area and Damon is very proud to be a part of a great

region that is on the cusps of even greater things. They

have people come from all over, as far as Germany to

their locals just as a get away with a pool. They have

Special rates for locals and their families, so if you have

family coming to town and don't have enough room call

for their special rates or if you need meeting space they

have a great conference room to meet your needs.

Your family is "our" family. Come let "us" make your bed. They are ready to partner and work together to make our re-

gion a destination. They are located 240 W. Highway 287, Florence AZ website is holidayinnexpressflorence.com, phone

2013 Coolidge Rotary Live and Silent Auction

Coolidge Rotary celebrated 76 plus years of service at its Annual Dinner Auction Saturday, March 16th 2013 at the Coolidge/Florence Elks Lodge. This year’s President Bonnie Palmer along with Rotary members are out gathering donations and raffle items from the community as well as selling tickets for the din-ner . The Coolidge/Florence Elks Lodge has been a longtime partner and provided a great meal as usual.

Over 120+ people packed the Elks lodge last year in support of the event. District Governor Randy Brooks, Deb and friend will be entertaining us with county music. We will have the Silent Auc-tion first, and then moved straight into the Live Auction. With the help from the many community sponsors we successfully raised over $16,000 dollars last year! Monies generated will be used to

fund the 20-$500 scholarships that will be awarded to Coolidge High School Seniors along with Imagine Seniors and other projects, i.e. dictionaries for 3rd graders, shoe box project to Mexico and Mi-cro-Credit program. Members believe that over $320,000 have been given in scholarships. Rotary is a service organization made up of Community Members

who give effortlessly of their time each week. The monies raised for this event go towards High School vocational Scholarship funds.

Membership Luncheon

March Membership Luncheon was held at the Coolidge Unified

School District Board Room on Wednesday, March 20th. Guest

Speaker was Rachel Duran, HR Analyst from the City of Coo-

lidge. Rachel spoke to the membership regarding Human Re-

sources broken up into the different categories, which included,

Customer Service, Laws and Regulations, Recordkeeping and

Documentation, Recruiting and Hiring, Employee Relations, Compensation and Benefits,

Safety and Wellness, Training and Career Development, Organ-

izational Development and Labor Relations. She gave the mem-

bers a good break down of each category. As an HR Analyst

these rules and regulations must be understood and practiced,

so Organize, Prioritize, Document, be consistent and maintain

“Confidentiality”

The Coolidge Chamber would like to thank Rachel for being our Guest Speaker and to

Coolidge Unified School District for the use of their Board room. Thank you to the fol-

lowing businesses for the door prizes: Liberty Tax, Tom Madden for

the Boyce Thompson Arboretum tickets, Morgan's Mobile Auto Re-

pair, Florence Holiday Inn Express and Suites. And to Carolyn Richel

for her assistance during the luncheon.

The next membership luncheon will be held at the Coolidge Council Chambers, April 17, 2013.

Coolidge Avenue Reconstruction

The Coolidge Avenue Project meeting was very informative. Kimley-Horn and Associates were on hand with

a presentation of the project. The overall project costs are: Design $425,000 Construction $1,725,000, Con-

struction Administrations $260,000, Contingencies $86,000 Total Project costs are: $2,481,000. The City staff

was on hand with maps to review with business owners on Coolidge Avenue. They worked with them on keep-

ing flows to their businesses during the construction. This will be a painful process, but is a much needed up-

grade to thedowntown area and will help local businesses shine. The city is committed to doing anything

within their power to make it as smooth as possible for the businesses. If you have any comments, ideas or

would like more information please contact the Public Works Department (520)723-4882.
