PIL Tip of the Week
Group work is an important part of any class. Whether you work best alone, or with others, collabora'on is a skill that all students need. Here are a few ways that you can work together
with your classmates and get an A+ on that group project!
1) Divide up the work:
Give each group member a task and deadline to complete it. One group member may be great at making PowerPoints, while another may like to do research online. Make sure that everyone feels comfortable with the work they have to do.
2) Use technology:
Students have many ways to talk with each other outside of the classroom. Try creaGng a WatsApp group to keep your group talking about the project. You can also use GoogleDocs to create documents together, even if you are all working from home. If you need any help with these applicaGons, ask your Learning Advisor!
3) Meet up:
Plan an in-‐person meeGng at least 2-‐3 days before the project is due. This will help you make sure that the whole project is organized and in order. Then, if anything is missing, you will have Gme to fix it.
4) Stay posi>ve:
You may have one group member who you think doesn’t do as much as everyone else. Try not to let it bother you. Keep a posiGve aTtude and communicate with each other to try to fix any problems.
Group work is necessary at CESL, the university, and in your future career. Now is the Gme to work on your collaboraGon skills and do well in your group project.
ATTEND A PIL WORKSHOP: EVERY WEDNESDAY 12:15-‐1:15, CESL Room 203
Several CESL students prac'ce their group work skills at a PIL workshop.

Every week we interview two CESL students. If you are willing to be interviewed, talk to the Student
Activities Assistants in the SLC (CESL 212).
STUDENT SPOTLIGHT!
Name: Anas Al Azzouni Hometown: Medina, Saudi Arabia Level: 6
How is your session so far? It’s pretty good so far, but a lot of homework and a lot of classes.
So you’re a SABIC student? What exactly is that? SABIC stands for the Saudi Arabian Basic Industrial Company. High achieving high school graduates who apply to work there can receive a scholarship to study abroad in either the U.S., Japan, China, Germany, or the U.K.
Where have you explored around Tucson or Arizona so far? I went up to Tempe to visit my cousin at ASU.
Where have you not gone that you would like to? I would love to visit Mt. Lemmon and Old Tucson.
Why did you decide to study English? Because I would like to study at a U.S. university and it’s a popular language around the world.
What do you hope to do after you finish your studies? I will go back to work for SABIC for at least 5 years. If I like it, then I will stay.
What is your hometown like? It’s a lot like Tucson, similar weather and surrounded by mountains. The people are very quiet; the town is known for being quiet.
Do you have any hidden or unlikely talents? I like playing soccer, and I’m good at fixing computers.
Any advice or message for your fellow CESL students? Work hard and accomplish what you came here to do.

STUDENT2 SPOTLIGHT! Names: Tony and Joe Level: 2 Hometown: An Hui, China
So, you guys are both from the same city? Yeah, we knew each other before.
Cool. Let’s talk about movies.
Tony: My favorite movies have Bruce Lee in them. You know his real name is actually Li Xiao Long.
Why are those your favorite movies? T: I like them because I like kung fu.
Do you do kung fu?
Sometimes. Actually, before high school, I was learning it and taking classes. I’ve forgotten how to do a lot of it now.
What about you, Joe? Joe: It’s the same for me. I also like Fast & Furious.
What’s your favorite Fast & Furious installment? J: The second one is my favorite because I like driving.
Do you drive like they do in Fast & Furious? J: Yes. And in 2 months, I’ll get a car here.
So we better watch out for you on the road, then. So, what do you think? Are movies important for people to watch or are they just for entertainment?
T: Many people are busy during the week. On the weekend or on holidays, it’s good for them to relax.
J: Actually, I don’t like watching movies. I want to spend my time doing something else.
What’s an example? J: I like to skateboard.
Do you skateboard a lot? J: Yeah, I also like skiing!
T: We went the day after the Mt. Lemmon trip and skied. Lift tickets are $40.
That’s really good to know. Next time, you’ll have to invite me. What are some other activities that you like to do?
T: Do you know KTV?
Oh, like karaoke? Yes, but you usually have to be 21. We’ll have to find some karaoke for you to do.
T & J: Yeah, that would be great.
I like to end my interviews with some inspiring words. Do you have any?
T: (pulls out phone) This is my quote: There will be obstacles to overcome.
J: And this is mine. Despair, also wants to believe in accident and redemption.
Hmm, maybe you can try explaining it to me and I’ll understand it better.
J: Okay. If I get lost or I’m confused between two ways, I believe that I can find hope because we can’t give up.
Oh, I like your translation better. Thanks, guys!
