Meeting Minutes

May 17th, 2017

Welcome –Julie Lynn Martin-Borba, Collaborative Coordinator • Agenda review • Julie thanked the following individuals for supporting the efforts of this group

and in making each meeting a success. • The City of Ceres for providing the facility space for each meeting • The Ceres Unified School District Technology Department for providing the

staff time for coordination of the Collaborative • The CUSD Child Nutrition Department for providing the catering services for

each meeting. • The Ceres Unified Grants Department staff for countless hours toward

meeting preparation and set up. • School sites for providing staff time to assist with inviting parents and to

attend the meetings. • Local business and community representatives for attending and supporting

the efforts of the City and school district in providing programs and services to all the families and children of the Ceres community.

1. Information Presentation

1. Health Resources and Services– Syla Ka & Julia Valdez– Membership development representatives, Health Plan of San Joaquin

• Health Plan of San Joaquin was established in 1995 with its headquarters in French Camp, CA and currently serves 345,000 Medi-Cal members.

• The goal of Health Plan of San Joaquin is to provide healthcare value and advance wellness through community partnerships and to also make healthcare available to low income individuals.

• US citizens, legal permanent residents, children, families, pregnant women, young adults, seniors and persons with disabilities are eligible to join HPSJ. As of May 2016, undocumented children up to age 19 are also eligible.

• Income guidelines for eligibility have been included as an attachment to these minutes.

• Healthcare initiatives include referrals to community health education classes, oral health programs for children and an obesity prevention initiative.

2. Healthy Community for Healthy Kids –

Jennifer Rangel – Program Coordinator, Ceres Partnership for Healthy Children, Kanat Tibet – Director of Local Policy, Public Health Advocates

• The Healthy Beverage Campaign was established reduce the volume of sugary beverages children consume.

• Type 2 diabetes has become an epidemic in the United States, caused in part by children drinking beverages with added (not natural) sugar.

• 25% of children’s calories come from fast-food and other restaurants and sugary drinks are the largest source of added sugar in the American diet.

• In Stanislaus County, the City of Ceres has the second highest child obesity rate, making it imperative that we work together as a community to support the healthy beverage campaign.

• The American Heart Association has made a state wide effort to implement a healthy beverage program with restaurants by making non sugary drinks the default choice with any children’s meal.

2. Upcoming Events

1. Upcoming Activities and Goals– Cambria Pollinger, Recreation Supervisor, City of Ceres Parks and Recreation

• Summer 2017 Adventure Day Camps: There will be 6 different adventure day camps starting June 12th and ending August 4th for children ages 5-11. Price range is between $115 - $125 per day camp.

• Swim lesson for children starting at 6 months of age will be held at Ceres High School and will cost $43 for a two week session starting June 12th.

• Youth fitness classes will be provided for children ages 1 – 12 and ranges from $40 - $45.

• Dance classes and enrichment programs will also be offered by the community center.

• Youth Leaders in Training – The Community Center is trying to get younger children involved in introducing them to work, mock interviews and other helpful tips that will make them more successful when they are older and able to attain a work permit.

• The Community Center would like to start focusing more on nature and the elements, such as having art classes outside at the park (Art in the Park). People are more than welcome to bring food and alcohol to the concerts.

• Goals of the Community Center include: Establishing a community garden, feeding the homeless, installing a natural interactive play space at Whitmore Park, and partnering with schools to do a Rec Prescription.

• Concerts in the Park will be held every Tuesday starting June 7th until July 19th.

2. ASES Survey – Lorenzo Armandariz - Administrative Assistant, Michelle Madrigal-Costa – Administrative Assistant, ASES After School Program • ASES After School Program Community Survey 16-17 is conducted yearly to

receive feedback on programs from the community. • Survey was provided to attendees of the meeting.
