Who we areThe Centre for English Teaching (CET) ispart of The University of Sydney, whichwas established in 1850. It is the oldestand one of the most prestigious learningand research institutions in Australia.CET is the English language arm ofthe University.

General English (GE)We emphasise communication, focussingon speaking and listening. Your writingand reading skills will also improve.

We help you achieve the confidence tolive and work in the English-speakingworld. GE offers flexible entry, withstudents being able to enter ongoingcourses on any Monday. Courses aredesigned for flexible progress around5-week modules. Suitable for workingholiday, ELICOS and/or tourist visas.

An intensive 5-week academic writingcourse designed for students who have� IELTS 6.5 or higher, with a writingscore of 5.5, or higher, or

� TOEFL 575 or 233 (computer based)with TWE 4.0, or higher, or

� TOEFL iBT 90 or higher

Intensive entry program (IEP)1Advanced level

An 11-week high level intensiveprogram which facilitates university entryin either semester one or two. It is a mostsuccessful program, which is challengingand focussed on reinforcing academicand language skills.

Academic Englishmaster class (AEM)1Higher advanced level

A very high level 10-week academicEnglish course. If you have reached atleast the equivalent of IELTS 6.5 andrequire an IELTS 7.0 to commence formalstudies, this is a suitable course for you.

The program focuses on individualand group activities and tasks whichreplicate university degree study. It isoffered twice each year to coincidewith university entry dates.

Academic English programsAcademic English (AE)Pre-intermediate to higher advanced (6 levels)

Our AE programs are designed to helpyou succeed in your university or othertertiary studies. They assist you toimprove your English and youracademic study skills.� Each AE level normally takes 10weeks (2 x 5-week modules)

� We offer AE entry every 5 weeks� IELTS and e-test preparation forman integral part of AE

Our advanced level programs prepareyou for successful study in all disciplineareas, whether at undergraduate orpostgraduate level.

Graduate academicskills (GAS)1Higher advanced level

A very high level 5-week intensiveacademic English course designed forstudents who have reached at least theequivalent of IELTS 6.5. It is organisedas a task-based program with weeklythemes. GAS reinforces academic studyskills rather than focusing on English.It will make your transition to academicstudy much easier.

IELTS preparationCET offers two types of IELTSpreparation:� as part of the AE program, and� as a special preparation IELTS session.

Advanced skills foracademic success (ASAS)1Higher advanced level

ASAS is a 4-week intensive programnormally offered to governmentsponsored students, particularly AusAID,World Bank and ADB students.

Furnished apartmentsIf you prefer independent living, wesuggest you consider renting a furnishedapartment. Furnished apartments canbe leased from one week to six months.We recommend you take temporaryaccommodation for the first week.During that first week, ouraccommodation providers can assist youwith a list of apartments and websites.

If you wish to find your ownaccommodation, you will need to visitthe locations and make your owndecisions. Sharing an apartment off-campus is a good way to mix withAustralian students. A guide to thecost of these is:� Unfurnished apartments – sharingtwo or more people

(A$160+ per person per week)� House – group of three peopleor more

(A$150+ per person per week)

Hostel and lodgeaccommodationIn this type of accommodation you canexpect a room (sometimes with bath)and shared living and kitchen facilities.

A guide to the cost of these is between$170 – $300 per week.

Types of accommodation

Homestay accommodationWe encourage our students to staywith an Australian family.

It is a good way to practise English whilelearning about the Australian way of life.Homestay families provide a furnishedbedroom and use of the house. You alsoget breakfast and dinner from Mondayto Friday. During weekends, breakfast,lunch and dinner are provided.

We want you to feel ‘at home’ in yournew environment in Australia whileenjoying your study experience. Wework with a number of agencies whocan help you find somewhere to live,organise your airport pickup if youwish, and place you in temporaryaccommodation if that is what youneed. They may even assist you infinding appropriate work if you areon a ‘working holiday’ visa.

At the time an e-test is held, youare eligible to take it if you havecompleted a 10-week course atthe advanced level or higher.

If you are eligible to take the e-testwhen no test is being offered byCET, we will help place you in anappropriate IELTS test.

Libraries – CET library is availableto all students Monday to Friday.The University library (Fisher) borrowingrights cost $50.

Sports – Gyms and sports are availableat the University for a small fee.

Student Support – Staff will helpyou with personal, educational andfinancial advice.

The University – Sydney Universityhas more than 45,000 students.The campus is like a mini-city.

Working in Sydney – On a studentvisa you can work part-time up to20 hours per week.

Activities – Reduced price ticketsoffered for concerts at the SydneyOpera House. You can find Informationabout regular activities (both free andother) on the CET noticeboard.

Airport reception – Our accommodationproviders can arrange for someone tomeet you and take you to youraccommodation.

CET orientation program – Weintroduce you to CET, the Universityand to Sydney. We take you on a citytour to help you become familiar withdowntown areas.

Climate – Sydney has four seasonsa year. If you come in winter (June toAugust), you will need some warmclothing.

Culture – Sydney University hasmuseums, theatres, cafes, art galleriesand free lunchtime concerts.

Terms and conditions(please read before you sign)

1)Refund policya) The administration fee is non-refundable

b) We refund your tuition and otherfees if your visa application is rejected.You must notify the Centre for EnglishTeaching in writing within 28 days ofbeing rejected

c) If you cancel your course morethan one month before the coursecommencement date, you will receivea refund of 100% of tuition fees paid

d) If you cancel your course lessthan one month before the coursecommencement date, you will receivea refund of 80% of tuition fees paid

e) Once you commence your courseyou will not be eligible for a refund.(We define a course as the number ofweeks for which you paid).

All refunds are sent to your homecountry.

This agreement does not remove yourright to take further action underAustralia’s consumer protection laws. Inaddition, our dispute resolution processesdo not circumscribe (restrict or limit) yourright to pursue other legal remedies.

2)Transfer to anotherinstitution

a) Transfer to the University of Sydney –We charge an administration fee ofup to A$200.

b) Transfer to another institution –If you transfer to a formal degree ordiploma course at another university,TAFE or College, you MAY be eligiblefor a transfer to that institution of upto 80% of the remainder of yourtuition fees. Both CET and the otherinstitution must approve the transfer.You should request a transfer on theCET ‘transfer form’. You may need arelease letter from CET. CET will notifyImmigration where necessary.

Please note – By law, CET is not obliged to agreeto a transfer of money. See (1), section (e) above.
