The CTBA scholarship will cover tuition and on-site room and board (double occupancy) to allow a needy aspiring bluegrass musician to attend Camp Bluegrass, a one week picking camp for bluegrass musicians. CTBA First Saturday of Month at Artz Ribhouse

I always enjoy going to the First Saturday CTBA entertainment each month. It gives me the opportu-nity to meet and listen to bands I have not had the pleasure of hearing or it provides me with the oppor-tunity to visit with those I have met and heard before. This month was no exception. I looked forward to seeing THE MANCHACA ALLSTARS again.

This group, comprised of Ben Buchanan (Guitar), Cara Cooke (Bass & Harmonica), Buck Buchanan (Dobro), George Smith (Fiddle) and Dave Seeman (Banjo), has been together for over 20 years now and is one of Austin’s finest.

They started this evenings entertainment with “Sitting on Top of The World” followed by “Shackles and Chains” and “Black Mountain Rag”. All of their music is up beat and keeps the audience in an up-lifted mood. They did their rendition of a song written by Audie Murphy called “Shutters and Boards” which was just outstanding. They play for private parties and other venues and have a couple of CD’s out that I highly recommend. Some of the other songs they did were: “Katy Daily”, “Aint Got No-body”, “There’s More Pretty Girls Than One”, “Lonely Quit Knocking on My Door”, “Greenville Trestle” and “Kentucky Waltz”. Their unique style of music and blended harmony puts them in high demand in the entertainment world. Great evening out…………. Thanks guys.

Wimberley Jam Spotlight By Phil Raye

As some of you may know the Charlie’s Catfish place in Wimberley has changed hands and is now Lane’s Country Café. Don Impink and I decided to check it out. We arrived around 7 pm in time to have dinner and boy was it good. We had chicken and fish and it was hard to say which was best. The Jam got under way at 8 pm under the patio out back and I soon found out that I should have worn long pants instead of shorts. It was a little cool. There was a number of ladies in this jam playing some good fiddle, banjo, guitar and mandolin music. We played some songs I had not heard before as well as some of the old favorites. Time flew and before we realized, it was 11 pm and we had to leave. They were still going strong when we left and I am told they go until the last man leaves.

Threadgill’s Starts New Music Venue Starting Sunday May 4th and every Sunday thereafter, they will be doing Bluegrass Brunch at the New, (New Old #1 6416 North Lamar Blvd., Austin, Tx.) They are trying to get the word out to all the Bluegrass bands that would be interested in playing in this kind of environment for a couple of hours on Sundays. The Bands will set the price and 100% of the door goes to the band. Contact: Odom Chumbley Talent Wrangler Threadgill’s (new) Old #1 Ph: 512-451-9304 E-mail: [email protected] Threadgill’s has been a focal point for musicians every since 1933 when it used to stay open 24 hours. Traveling musicians soon got the word and would join Kenneth Threadgill as he sang the songs of Jimmie Rodgers nightly. This continued for several years until 1974 when it was closed af-ter the death of Kenneth’s wife Mildred. The City of Austin wanted to demolish it as an eye sore but it was purchased by Eddie Wilson who then owned the Armadillo World Headquarters and he de-cided to remodel it and turn it into a Threadgill’s Southern Style Restaurant with a menu to match. It is now known as Threadgill’s—Old No 1. Located at 6416 N. Lamar Blvd, Austin, Texas. The rest is pretty much history and it’s success has spurred a second Threadgill’s World Headquar-ters Restaurant located at 301 West Riverside Drive , Austin, Texas

CD Spotlight By Roy Glover

I was told about this CD by a friend of mine who was rav-ing about how good it was. I gave it a listen and sure enough I liked almost all the tracks. There were 3 that I didn’t much care for but over all I would recommend it. I found it to be a simple clean sound and the songs seem to be, for the most part, original music but I don’t know if they wrote the songs. There is a nice mix of Guitar, banjo, mandolin and bass by The Soul Pickers, a group from northern Alabama/Tennessee area. They formed in 2003 and since that time they have paid their dues performing in Churches, homecomings, and revivals as well as their share of restaurants, civic gatherings, family functions and music barns. The Beautiful River of Life is the Band’s debut album, coming courtesy of their signing with the blue Circle label in April of last year. You can check out this album and others at: www.bluecirclerecords.com Give them a listen.

NEW FESTIVAL DEBUTS IN FAYETTVILLE By Ken Brown

Fayeteville is about halfway between Austin and Houston, an easy 1.5 hour drive down Highway 71 just past La Grange, then north a few miles on FM 955. The area was settled in the 1830s. The town named in 1844 but not incorporated until 1880. Even though La Grange is the county seat, Fayetteville has a court-house square with a beautiful courthouse smack in the center. It’s a two-story white frame structure, built in 1880, with a clock tower on top and a jail on the second floor, complete with two cells and antique iron shackles. It was the Precinct 2 courthouse, and one of the few precinct courthouses built in Texas.

During the weekend of April 18—20, the courthouse square was the center of the first annual “Texas

Pickin’ Park” bluegrass festival. About once a month, the square is turned over to jammers and trans-formed into the “Texas Pickin’ Park.” The entire square was lined with about 40 covered stalls for vendors. There was a big tent with a stage and folding chairs set up for the daytime musical events and there were jam sessions all over the grounds, including a continuous one on the courthouse square gazebo. The east side of the square had various food vendors and the local café was jammed with festival-goers. And yes, rest as-sured there were funnel cakes. Two trailers with portajohns were set up on one of the streets. Although the organizers were clearly prepared for bad weather, Saturday was pritnear perfect and most of the jams were alfresco. Jammers showed up from Houston, Austin, Dallas and points in between. Many of the vendors booths had arts and crafts, but I didn’t have time to check them out, except for spending a while with Texas resophonic luthier Carroll Benoit and checking out his instrument lineup.

An enclosed building with garage-style doors and ceiling fans was the site for instrument workshops and the slow jam hosted by Jerry Scribner. I was only able to attend on Saturday, but I can report that the turnout was stupendous. I spent most of the day jamming and didn’t quit until 3 am. It was a bit cool by that time, so we retreated into the festival office and picked with jamming friends Art, Marsha, Sue, Steve, Aubrey and alice.

The Lonestar Bluegrass Band (left above), .Blue River Band (center above), No Strings Attached (right ) Buffalo Nickel band (below) and the Blue Creek Gospel Band (below right) were booked for this festival.

Unfortunately, I missed all the stage shows because I was jamming, so I can’t report on that part (but, a bit of trivia, both of these “Blue” bands featured banjo pick-ers I used to know when I lived in San Antonio). This inaugural event proved to be an overwhelming success, and I plan to attend again next year. It was well organ-

ized and run. The next monthly jam on the square will be May 10 and I might see you there.
