CTBA Band Scramble Fundraiser

July 7th at Artz Ribhouse

The 10th Annual Band Scramble

This was the CTBA’s biggest Fundraiser of the year. An event in which many of the top Bluegrass musicians in Central Texas were mixing it up in Fun-For-all get Together. There was no shortage of people at this gala event. As you can see from the picture below there was plenty of cheering to keep the bands in high spirits

2

The Bands were given one hour to prepare and then everything kicked off about seven with Band #1 to my right opening with a bang. Featured was : Rod Moag on fiddle, Larry Burnside on Guitar, Cara Cooke on mando-lin, Art Horan on banjo, Ginger Evans on Bass and Jessie Gregg on Guitar. They made a great impression with harmony and instru-ments. The crowd lat-terly came alive on the first song. They were allowed time enough to play 4 songs for their set and they set the bar pretty high for the rest of the bands. These bands were made up of people who came from San Antonio, Bryan College Station, Austin, Wimberley and all the surrounding areas. Most had not played together before except possibly in Jams at Artz Ribhouse from time to time. Many were well known professional musicians however which could account for the fact that they sounded as if they had played together for years.

Band #2, not to be outdone made a similar entrance and also wowed the crowd. They were made up of : Buck Buchannan on Do-bro, Shawn Spiars on Banjo, Pet Moast on Bass, Maresha Correnia on Vo-cal, and Tom Dupissey on guitar. Their musical talent made them equally as good as the previous group. They had some great songs. Truth be known I don’t think they were ready to stop at 4 songs but rules are rules so they relinquished the stage to the next group.

3

This group, Band #3 was comprised of : Dave Seeman on banjo, Billy Brown on Guitar, Eddie Zip on Bass and Earl Hunt on mandolin. You would think that by now the crowd would be set-tling down and not paying much atten-tion to the band but that was not the case. This group managed to pick just the right music and songs to keep the shouts, whistles and clapping to a frenzy. It was amazing how the crowd just kept wanting more and the band, like the previous band had a hard time quitting with just four songs. (They may have slipped in one extra I am not sure) Next came the Band #4 composed of: Eddie Collins on banjo, Ben Buchanan on guitar, Jon Field on Bass, Dale Albright on mandolin and Robert Norris on Fiddle. They hammered the crowd with some extreme banjo, mandolin and fiddle playing along with vocals which again …..sent the crowd into an-

other round of cheers and clapping. I want to take a mo-ment to mention the fact that the Band Scramble and the Ga-rage Sale would not have been possible without all the many people who participated and who helped to make this event come about. Here is just a few: Eddie Collins, John Hood, Russell Gunn, Ken Brown and countless others too many to name. Our

thanks to Everyone!!

Enthusiasm, not experience, is the key ingredient you will need to bring to this two hour workshop on improvisation techniques for banjo and guitar hosted at the Deering Banjo Factory on August 18th. Given by well known banjo player, Andy Rau and his partner, Less Johnson, the work-shop sessions will include a 30 minute demonstration by both performers, 60 minutes of individual banjo or guitar improvisation techniques with handouts, and a 30 minute question and answer session at the end. The cost will be $35 if you only want to take the banjo/guitar session or $50 for both indi-vidual sessions. The workshop will run from 10 am to noon and 1:30 pm to 3:30 pm to allow the at-tendees a chance to break for lunch. Free factory tours and a showroom full of Deering Banjos for all to try will round out this day full of musical adventure Players will need to bring their instruments but need not have extensive experience to learn and have fun. Guitar players may be very novice or experienced and Less, who holds a Masters degree in mu-sic and has extensive experience with young players, will be able to excite you about your explora-tion into improvisation. Banjo players should have some modest banjo skills including the basics of roll pattern. Andy Rau, whose new CD “Higher Ground” will be given to each attendee, will per-form with a variety of Deering banjos including the Crossfire, the GDI, and the Saratoga Star. He is a very experienced teacher whose students frequently visit the fac-tory for their banjos. To sign up for this workshop on August 18th, please call the Deering Banjo Company toll free number, 800-845-7791. To learn more about Deering ban-jos, log on to their website,
