Thirty years ago, the Community Foundation of Collier County was launched with $300,000 and dreams of building a constant, growing source of funds for special community needs. Now, as we celebrate our 30th anniversary, we are proud to be a leading foundation with $86 million in assets and record grantmaking of $77 million that has helped thousands of people.

But we are more than the numbers. We are an organization of dedicated donors and staff who work to improve the quality of life in Collier County…forever.

Welcome to the Celebration of Philanthropy 2015!

The Trustees Emeriti Committee of the Community Foundation of Collier County and the Naples Daily News are delighted to sponsor this event which embodies the Foundation’s mission—to improve the quality of life in our community by connecting donors to community needs and providing leadership on critical community issues.

The Trustees Emeriti are dedicated to this mission and collectively represent over 188 years of service as board members for the Community Foundation. When we served as board members, the Trustees Emeriti were instrumental in making decisions that changed our community for the better—forever. We have helped direct millions of dollars to nonprofits that successfully serve the unmet needs of Collier County residents.

We have seen the growth of this organization from its founding in 1985 with an endowment of $300,000 from Don Franke and Bill Oberhelman to a respected, vibrant and successful community leader with assets of $86 million and the power of $77 million since our inception. As the Community Foundation enters its 30th year, we anticipate that it will continue to pursue its goals of growth in assets, growth in grantmaking, growth in donor services and growth in community impact.

Today, the Trustees Emeriti applaud four extraordinary honorees that you will meet today. We know that you will be inspired by their stories and their dedication to improving the quality of life in the place that they call home.

We encourage every one of you to be part of the force that is the Community Foundation of Collier County. Through your gifts, your established funds, your endowments, your time spent serving on committees and your attendance at events like the Celebration of Philanthropy, the Power of the Purse, and the Women of Initiative Awards, you help our Community Foundation support the causes that help make Collier County the very best place to live and work.

It Was 30 Years Ago Today…

Many of you knew Don Franke and Bill Oberhelman. They were the consummate givers and, throughout their lives, made a commitment to a host of Collier County organizations. In 1983, Don Franke incorporated the Naples Area Foundation and, then, teaming with Bill Oberhelman, acquired nonprofit status for the Foundation in 1985. (To put that into context: in 1985, Ronald Reagan was sworn in for a second term, the song “We Are the World” topped the charts and the first compact disc was introduced as “the” way to listen to music.)

Our name was changed to the Community Foundation of Collier County, and in just six months, the Board had built an endowment of $300,000 to be, as Don Franke described it, “a constant—and growing—source of funds for special community needs.”

For the next 28 years, board members, committee members, staff and volunteers worked tirelessly to build the Community Foundation of Collier County into the prominent and trusted organization that it is today. Many gave freely of their financial resources, time, ideas, and their boundless energy.

Today, we have over 500 funds totaling more than $86 million in assets. Ten years ago, we were giving out roughly $1.8 million a year in grants; in 2013-2014, we distributed nearly $1.3 million in one month alone!

Growth in assets; growth in grants; growth in service; growth in impact: these have been the cornerstones of our work in the past year. And, this work has been fueled by a spirit of collaboration with donors, nonprofit colleagues and key community players.

On many fronts, the Community Foundation has moved from grantmaker to agenda-setter—assessing the vital needs of Collier County residents, educating existing and potential donors about the nonprofits that are meeting those needs most effectively, and supporting those nonprofits through a grantmaking process that values opportunity for all.

Onward to even greater growth…for good…and forever.

Robert C. Cosgrove Award

The Robert C. Cosgrove Award recognizes individuals who represent devotion to human values, families and the overall well-being of our community.

To me, being philanthropic is sharing my blessings with those in need and showing concern for others which, for

many of us, begins with the sharing of ourselves as volunteers.

Before I had the ability to financially support organizations, I donated blood over several decades for a total of 22 gallons.

Sharing my passion to provide children a safe place and provide them educational opportunities is why I’ve been involved as a volunteer for 40 years: in the classroom, through fundraising or serving on the Board for both Junior Achievement and the Boys & Girls Club.

Thanks to the opportunity to have a successful insurance career, I have also been able to endow organizations with financial resources. I’m very proud to be associated with these organizations that enrich the lives of children and adults alike with education and healthcare opportunities. These organizations include Junior Achievement, Boys & Girls Club, Hodges University, Hope HealthCare Services, David Lawrence Center, Ronald McDonald Care Mobile, Golisano Children’s Hospital and the Community Foundation of Collier County.

It’s been a privilege to be engaged and help these organizations meet the needs of our community.

Jerry F. Nichols

Page 11: Celebration of Philanthropy 2015 Program

Harvey Kapnick Award

The Harvey Kapnick Award recognizes a nonprofit that has distinguished itself by exemplifying program excellence.

Being engaged in philanthropic work is one the highest and most joyful callings. To face the challenges of

poverty, addiction, disease, and prejudice in a community can be troubling. But my faith and spirits are lifted, in the face of society’s worst challenges, by the greatness of those who selflessly give, volunteer, and serve to transform the lives of strangers.

At St. Matthew’s House, we have been encouraged by a community that always rallies to meet the needs of our less fortunate neighbors. We are strengthened as servants in other agencies lay aside self-interest to work together with us. Our organization has been blessed by the generosity of our neighbors, businesses, churches and foundations that give to help the lives of those afflicted find transformation and hope.

Since we have been “Touching Hearts and Transforming Lives” since 1987, we find the miracles that have resulted are amazing, as those who found hope and healing years ago are now giving back and have joined us as donors and co-laborers in this high calling.

Outstanding Corporate Philanthropy Award

The Outstanding Corporate Philanthropy Award recognizes an organization that consistently helps support our community by making intelligent use of its own strengths and social capital.

Since 1947, The Greater Naples Chamber of Commerce has been advocating on behalf of the business

community to foster a healthy business climate in Collier County. The Chamber’s mission is, “To make Collier County the best place in America to live, work and visit.” The Chamber partners with many organizations to sponsor and promote causes to its membership through its communication platforms, including social networks. Most recently, causes include The Freedom Memorial Project, Farm City BBQ and the Artificial Reef Project. The artificial reef system strikes the perfect balance of positive economic impact, enhances our quality of life through more robust recreational opportunities and helps improve the environment with measurable increases in fish population. The Chamber proudly supported the Reef Deployment Ceremony and the Blessing of the Reefs. In addition, The Chamber is a corporate member of the Leadership Collier Foundation, a 501(3) organization that offers leadership programs and has 1,300+ alumni. These programs build a broad-based network of community leaders who themselves raise funds for worthy causes and contribute to the betterment of the community.

Excellence in Civic Leadership Award

The Excellence in Civic Leadership Award recognizes a civic organization whose members’ volunteer service to a program or project in our community has had demonstrable impact.

Founded in 1951, The Rotary Club of Naples is the original Rotary club in Collier County. We currently have

109 members. The Club proudly supports Rotary International’s programs, and our members volunteer their time and make contributions to support local charities including Salvation Army Bell Ringing, Child’s Gift of Giving, Dictionary Day, Rotary Camp Florida and Collier Harvest.

Our commitment to philanthropy is evidenced by our passion for four important events:Gift of Life International: We have saved over 50 children. Some traveled to Naples, lived with our members and had successful heart surgeries; others received Club-supported heart surgeries in their country. The Grape Escape: A wine and food event on 5th Avenue South in Naples is held each November. This event funds the majority of our annual charitable contributions and 100% of our members volunteer each year.Meals of Hope: This started with us as Kids Against Hunger and is now managed by one of our members. More than 23 million meals have been packed.Learn2Earn: This scholarship program is designed to provide scholarships to graduating seniors and to adults. Since last July, we have awarded scholarships to 11 students. Twenty seniors will apply this year. The Learn2Earn program is planning to include every Collier County high school and to diversify the fields of study and occupational training.

It feels good to give! The reward of seeing our efforts positively changing lives has motivated each of us—that is reward enough.
