From DitchWitch two new horizontaldirectional drills - the JT60 and the JT60 AllTerrain – each equipped with 60,000 lb(267 kN) of thrust and pullback plus 9,000 ft•lb(12,200 N•m) of rotational torque - a powerful

combination that results in exceptionallyefficient and productive installation of utilities.Powering each drill is the contractor’s choice

of a 190 gross hp (142 kW) Tier 3 or 200 grosshp (149kW) Tier 4i diesel engine. Both enginesprovide sufficient power for each drill’smechanical and hydraulic components, including an onboard, 560l/min (150 gal/min)fluid pump that helps ensure productivedrilling at greater distances. The pump is enclosed to reduce noise and

protect components from harsh conditions.A climate-controlled cab, a heavy-duty

double rack-and-pinion thrust drive, intuitivecarve mode, easy serviceability, and many ofthe other features shared by these drills areresults of direct input from customers. One feature unique to the JT60 All Terrain

directional drill is the patented, two-pipe AllTerrain drilling system that provides morepower to the bit than any other rock-drillingsystem in its class; allowing the JT60 All Terrain

to be more productive inthe widest range ofground formations. Both the JT60 and the JT60 All Terrain are

factory-equipped with the proven DitchWitchGPS at no additional cost. The DitchWitch organization and U.S. Fleet

Indonesian contractor PT Lancarjaya MandiriAbadi (LMA) is using a newly delivered fleetof equipment from Chinese manufacturerLiuGong to undertake work on the Cikampek-Palimanan Toll Road inWest Java, a 116kmstretch of highway forming part of theTrans-Java Toll Road. The 19 unit fleet, ordered specifically for

this project, includes six 920 excavators,four 610H roller compactors, two 842 wheelloaders, a 90 x 90m³ concrete batching plant,five 8m³ truck mixers, and a 25m truck-mounted concrete pump.LMA is working on four different packages

along the route as subcontractor to theMalaysian-Indonesian joint venture KarabhaGriya Mandiri-Nusa Raya Cipta.Hendarin Achmad, LMA’s project manager,

says that the four packages add up to adistance of 24km along the route; with anestimated project value of US$200 million.Package 1A is a 5km stretch comprising

earthworks, drainage structures and roadpaving, with Package 3A being a 13km stretchwith similar work. Package 2B is a 3km lengthof purely earthworks, and Package 3C

includes, together with earthworks, theconstruction of a concrete box culvert.LMA is one one of LiuGong’s largest

customers in Indonesia with a total fleet ofalmost 60 LiuGong units. With a third of these units working on the

Cikampek-Palimanan Toll Road, it constitutesthe largest concentration of LiuGongequipment on any site in Indonesia.

EarthworksMr Achmad says that the bulk of thecontracts are predominately earthworks.Package 1A involves 300,000m³ of cut

and fill, 3A has 1,500,000m³, and 3C has450,000m³. Package 2B involves 500,000m³of fill only.“We are working on level ground and

dealing mainly with soft subsoil, with hardlyany rock along the route,” he says. The 920 excavator has a bucket capacity

of 0.95m³ and a maximum digging depth of6,615mm. Two of the machines are beingused at an aggregate plant where rock isbeing broken to form aggregate for the basecourse of the road and also for the concretebatching plant. One of the 920 units has been placed on a

mudbank in the centre of a river, where it isdigging rock from the riverbed, to be brokeninto aggregate. One of the 2.3m³ capacity, Cummins-

powered 842 wheel loaders is working at theaggregate plant, while the second unit is atthe nearby concrete batching plant, wherethe three silo 90 plant have a 90m³ per

hour capacity. The five 8m³ concrete mix trucks are

also operating out of this concrete batchingplant site. The four 610H roller compactors, which

have a drum width of 2.130mm and anoperating weight of 10kg, are being used tocompact the main road, ramps and accessroads, which are both rigid pavement andflexible pavement types.

Rigid pavementThe rigid pavement has a 25cm aggregatebase course, a lean concrete layer of 10cm,and a concrete layer of 30cm. The flexiblepavement has a 40cm sub-base, an aggregatebase course of 20cm, an ATB layer of 15cm,and an asphalt concrete layer of 5cm.“Currently the 610 compaction rollers are

making eight passes to achieve the specified96% compaction which is in line with ouroriginal projections,” said Mr Achmad. He went on to confirm that the cement

batching operation had only just started andis currently only supplying the mix to theLiuGong concrete pumping operation at thebox culvert on Package 3C.“I would say that during the initial setting

up and early production cycles we have notexperienced any problems.”The concrete box culvert on Package 3C is

a 25m structure that is being constructedwith the use of the 25m 5160THB truck-mounted concrete pump, which has anoutput of 110m³/h.“We are experiencing impressive

production cycles with the excavators in boththe earthmoving and the aggregate loadingcapacities,” said Mr Achmad, adding,“They are in continuous use and are working

with a fleet of 15 x 45t capacity dumptrucks.

No downtime“There has been no unexpected downtime

with the excavators or the wheel loaders. Each unit is proving to be a reliable elementin the work chain. He added. The Cikampek-Palimanan Toll Road is

being built by a joint venture company, PTLintas Marga Sedaya (LMS), and controlledby PLUS Expressways (PLUS), which holds a55% stake, with local partner BaskharaUtama Sedaya holding the remaining stake.LMS has been granted a 35 year

concession by the government of Indonesiato manage the highway. The toll road construction is divided into

six phases and will have four lanes, with anoption for expansion to six lanes in future. The 116km highway will connect to twoother highways to form the Trans JavaToll Road, which will act as the main landcorridor on the island, improving accessbetween theWest and Central Java regions.Ultimately, the road network will connectSumatra, Java and Bali.Work began on the Cikampek-Palimanan

Toll Road in April 2013, and completion isexpected in May 2015. Total construction isexpected to require A Rp 12.6 trillion(US$1.3 billion) investment.

TrainingLiuGong has a policy of training the trainers, with its own training centre in Singaporeproviding instruction to LMA’s own mechanicsand operators.“Indonesia has a chronic lack of skilled

operators for construction equipment, andthis training scheme has been a particularlyproductive service for us, as we have beenable straight away to use the equipment toits full advantage,” says Mr Achmad.“We are also experiencing full support for

spares and maintenance through PancaTraktor, and have experienced no seriousunplanned downtime since the projectbegan.” CEAR

that some Chinese manufacturers have forpoor service standards, LiuGong hasconcentrated on a strong support systemthat along with operator and maintenancetraining also delivers spares quickly.Desmond Yee, Managing Director of Panca

Traktor, says that any request for spares willgo direct to Singapore and if the requestedpart is not available there, the request goesimmediately to the spares division in China.“We are looking at only two days for parts

to reach us in Jakarta,” he says. “This kind ofsupport is very reassuring for contractors, because often the equipment is working onremote locations on the other islands, andreducing time for repair and maintenance is acontinuing concern for them.”LMA, which was founded in 1994, is both

a general contractor and a plant hirecompany.Under the Indonesian system of

government licences, LMA undertakesearthworks, building and construction, roads, bridges and drainage works, andoffshore tin mining. The company’s total fleet numbers more

than 700 units, with more than half beingdumptrucks. A total of 1,300 people areemployed, with 800 of those beingdumptruck drivers, and 350 operators ofheavy equipment.“We are a plant intensive contractor,

and also a labour intensive company,”says Mr Afandi. “We have reached the stagewhere the mixture of pricing, spares andtraining that LiuGong are able to offer us,along with the quality and the diversity ofequipment types made by the company, isvery attractive to us.”The contractor is working across the

archipelago, with most of the work on theisland of Java, and with contracts andequipment also in Sumatra, Kalimantanand Sulawesi. The majority of LiuGong equipment

delivered to LMA consists of 26 x 920Dexcavators, which have a capacity of 0.95m³.There is also one 160hp bulldozer, seven160H 10t vibratory rollers, three 10t 160Hpad-foot rollers, a 2.3m³ 842 and a 1.7m³835 wheel loaders, two 90³m 90 concretebatching plant, five 8m³ truck mixers, andone 25m high concrete truck pump.

PT Lancarjaya Mandiri Abadi (LMA) hasexpanded its plant fleet by investing in almost60 units from Chinese manufacturer LiuGongduring an 18 month period, the equipmentranging from earthmovers to dumptrucks andconcrete batching and placing machines thatare being used across the Indonesianarchipelago.LMA’s president, founder and owner

Antonius Afandi says that the first deliveriestook place in April 2012, with the latestbeing delivered late last yearThe company, one of Indonesia’s largest

general contractors, has a large andexceptionally diverse plant fleet, but isintent on standardising much of the fleet forlogistical reasons and for ease of servicing.LiuGong, one of China’s biggest

manufacturers of construction machinery,in 2008 began establishing its own regionaloffices worldwide. LiuGong MachineryAsia Pacific Pte Ltd in Singapore coversthe Asia Pacific region, excluding China, with a 45,000 sq ft facility that opened onlyin 2011.In Indonesia, LiuGong’s distributor is

Jakarta based PT Panca Traktor Indonesia.“The pricing of LiuGong equipment is

very attractive to us, because it is highlycompetitive,” says Mr Afandi. “This howeveris not the sole reason for us investing soheavily in LiuGong.“There are enormous advantages when you

have one manufacturer supplying abroad cross section of your plant fleet. These include the ease of dealing with onesource for servicing and spare parts, and theoperator and driver training that right now isso important in Indonesia.”Lack of trained personnel to operate

construction machinery is one of theproblems facing contractors in Indonesia atpresent, with the country’s infrastructureprogramme and booming private sectorconstruction stretching demand forsemi-skilled machine operators.LiuGong has established its own training

centre in Singapore and has a policy oftraining the trainers: a number of LMAoperators have undergone training there, and they in turn have trained LMA operatorswhen the new equipment was delivered.Singapore is also the supply hub for spare

parts and components. Aware of the image

The sight on a federal highway in FortWorth,Texas, is certainly unusual: instead of the roadbuilding machines that normally dominatethe scene, three mining machines are bitingtheir way through the rocky ground. These machines, however, are not mining

pay minerals - they are cutting a route, anotherdomain of the surface miners fromWirtgen. The North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA)

is building the 28 mile long Chisholm TrailParkway, a toll road which will in futureconnect Interstate 30 south of FortWorthwith the U.S. Highway 67.

The challengeThe NTTA faced two problems when planningthe project. Firstly, the planned route ranthrough exceedingly rocky terrain comprisingsolid limestone. The second was that conventional drilling

and blasting methods were not permitted forthis project. “We are working inside the citylimits of FortWorth. Drilling and blasting arenot permitted,” says Mike Manley, EquipmentDivision Manager, Mario Sinacola & SonsExcavating Inc.The company contracted to undertake the

work, one of the largest general contractors innorthern Texas, soon presented a quick, albeitat first glance somewhat unusual solution:why not use surface miners for road buildingto remove the extremely hard limestonesubstrate selectively, rapidly and withmillimeter precision?IMario Sinacola & Sons had already used

the machines successfully to mine payminerals for many years -Wirtgen surfaceminers cut, crush and load the material in asingle operation.Additional machines are not needed; this

considerably reduces the equipment,

personnel and time required. Mining, orrouting operations as in FortWorth, canbe undertaken more cost-effectively.Exceptional solution“The earth works cover a vast area, the

amount of rock to be removed is relativelylarge and the work very intensive,” explainedChris Logan, Project Manager, Mario Sinacola& Sons. For example, 2.14 million m³ of limestone

with an average hardness of between 6,000and 10,000 PSI, including some areas with upto 16,000 PSI.“The surface miners are decisive, especially

when the dozers come up against theircapacity limits. With the help of the surfaceminers, we can crush the hard rock to thedesired grain size and use it directly in situ,”

added Logan.The company‘s Project Administrator

Channing D. Santiago added: “Without thesurface miners, the work would haveproceeded extremely slowly. We would have

14 Construction Equipment Asia Reports May 2014

Clearing the wayWirtgen surfaceminers can do

muchmore than just extract

payminerals.On the Chisholm

Trail Parkway in theUS State of

Texas, they are being used for

routingwork and reliably bite

their way through hard rock.

Page 15: CEAR May 2014 English

had to use pneumatic drills for months onend and incur high costs in the process.Surface miners are the ideal choice for thisapplication.”

High qualityWhile the surface miner 2500 SM with 1,065HP and a cutting depth of up to 600mm cutsmetre after metre of the main corridor, thetwo surface miners 2200 SM with a turningradius of just 2.5m demonstrate their prowesswhen routing narrower sections, such asramps and crossings.“By combiningWirtgen‘s standard grade

and slope control system for simpleadjustment of the precise cutting depth withan additional GPS-based system, the operatorcan optimally adapt the cutting process to

the profile of the terrain,” said Robert Bauer, the man responsible for the Mining Divisionat theWirtgen Group‘s branchWirtgenAmerica. The unique cutting technology minimizes

wear on the cutting tools, even in hardabrasive material, while simultaneouslymaintaining a consistently high extractionperformance.Wirtgen technology ensures that the

planned bottom profile is neatly cut at thepredetermined depth; in this way, the routeforms an ideal sub-base for the paving courses.Another advantage is that transport trucks

can drive over the level surface withoutcausing damage during the entireconstruction period. In FortWorth, part of thereclaimed material is reused as a lower basecourse at a depth of 20cm.On completion, the three-lane road will

comprise a 10cm thick upper base course inaddition to the substructure, and a 33cmthick fully reinforced concrete pavement.By using surface miners, the contractor

ultimately also helps to protect theenvironment. Ground impacts, noise and dustare considerably reduced when using surfacemining instead of removing material with apneumatic drill and then transferring it totrucks. And since the costs are also lower, customers are increasingly using the surfaceminers fromWirtgen for road construction.

The load capacity of the new LTM 1160-5.2has been increased by around 20-25%compared to its predecessor whilst thetelescopic boom has remained at the samelength of 62m.The vehicle width has been reduced from 3mto 2.75m which means that not only it iseasier to drive on public roads but alsoconsiderably better on constricted sites. The superstructure of the new LTM 1160-5.2is powered by the engine in the crane chassisusing a mechanical shaft. This makes the new 5-axle vehicle the

second crane model to feature theinnovative single-engine drive concept;introduced by Liebherr at Bauma 2013 forthe LTM 1300-6.2.

Powerful boom systemThe six-part 62m long telescopic boom onthe new LTM 1160-5.2 is telescoping in andout easily via the tried and tested rapid actionTelematik telescoping system. With its 10.8m to 19m folding jib and

additional telescopic boom extensions, thenew 160 t can achieve hoist heights of up to

93m and outreaches of up to 76 m.The folding jib can be erected to an angle

of 0°, 20° or 40°. An optional hydraulicadjustment facility for the folding jib isavailable, enabling it to luff under full loadbetween 0° and 40°.For work in two hook operation, a secondhoist gear and a 2.9m assembly jib and arooster sheave is available. The maximum ballast of the new LTM

1160-5.2 is 54t with a width of 4.27m. Thebase plate with 10 t and a 4 t ballast platehave the same width as the vehicle. With a total weight of 60t and a 12t axleload, the new crane can carry its doublefolding jib, a 3-sheave hook block and astorage box with a generous payload.

Ease of controlIn the hydraulic system, the electric‘Load-Sensing’ control ensures accuratework operations.Up to four movements can be actuated

simultaneously.Depending on the requirements for the liftingtask and of the crane driver, the slewing gearcan be easily switched from ‘open’ to‘hydraulically locked’.The LTM 1160-5.2 features the new

Liebherr concept for powering thesuperstructure. Instead of the twin-engineconcept normally used on cranes in this class

the 160t is powered by a single engine with amechanical shaft.Gear shafts are routed from the distributor

gear in the crane chassis via two mitre gearsthrough the centre of the slewing ring to thepump distributor gear in the superstructure.A mechanical shaft ensures a particularly highefficiency level and low engine speeds in thechassis engine provide sufficient power forcrane work. This ensures the economy of thenew concept in terms of fuel consumption. The benefits of omitting a separate

superstructure engine include a reduction inthe amount of maintenance work and areduction in weight. The omitted weight canbe used for load-bearing components, thusincreasing the crane's load capacity. An add-on program has been developed for

the new crane drive concept with just oneengine and a mechanical shaft to allow themachine to be run with low fuelconsumption. This enables the completepump drive to be disconnected automaticallywhen the engine is idling and thenreconnected by the intelligent controller in amatter of seconds when it is required.

Drive trainA six-cylinder Liebherr diesel engine whichdevelops 400 kW / 544 h.p. at 1900 rpm andtorque of 2,516 Nm at 1350 rpm provides theLTM 1160-5.2 with all the power it needs. Theengine complies with the emissionregulations of Directive 97/68/EC - Stage 4and Regulation EPA/CARB – Tier 4 final inthe USA.The force is transferred to the crane axles

via the 12-speed ZF-AS Tronic gears. Theintarder, a zero wear hydrodynamic brakeintegrated in the gearbox, acts as a retarder.

technology, and a sincere sense ofresponsibility’ has been widely accepted andrecognized by the industry.Wang Xuhong believes that Zoomlion’s

growth from a startup with an RMB 500,000loan into a five-star Chinese company isclosely related to its corporate culture ofbelieving that “to entire sincerity therebelongs ceaselessness.”AsWang Xuhong notes, “A very important

reason Zoomlion has got to where it is todayis that we’ve always integrated the conceptof ‘sincerity’ into all aspects of management.”

Brand buildingChairman of the China Federation ofIndustrial Economics Li Yizhong stressed atthe Forum that enterprise brand building isinseparable from unerring quality. He stated,“The responsibility of an enterprise is toprovide society with high-quality productsand good service. If it can continue to doso in the long term and receives marketrecognition, then it may become a productor service brand.”Zoomlion attaches great importance to

product quality. In the course of the company’s

development, there have been numerousdefining moments. In 1994, for example, as aresult of imperfections and a number offaults withthe first generation of concrete pumps, thecompany applied the brakes, and ZoomlionChairman Zhan Chunxin made the decisionto “stop all production.”Zoomlion then quickly developed its

second generation of concrete pumps.By the end of the year the company had sold45 pieces of equipment and exchanged ‘for

brand on the global economic stage.“The ‘China Dream’ of strengthening the

country through strong brands is graduallybeing realized.”Five-star brands are selected in

accordance with standards set out in theCommercial Enterprise Brand Evaluation andCorporate Culture Building Guidelinespromulgated by the State Administration ofQuality Supervision, Inspection, andQuarantine and the StandardizationAdministration of the People’s Republicof China. These standards are used to conduct a

comprehensive system evaluation ofcorporate and commercial brands using fivelevel-one indicators: ‘ability, quality, reputation, corporate culture, and influence,’17 level-two indicators, including brandplanning and brand management; and 52level-three indicators. Each brand is then awarded between five

and two stars.

Founded in 1992, Zoomlion is the leadingcompany in China’s construction machineryindustry. The company’s brand image ofhaving ‘devotion to the profession, leading

customer and its constant attempts toimprove quality led to a successful turnaroundand safeguarded the reputation of the brand. From the company’s early days of

rigorously pursuing product quality, toestablishing a ‘zero-defect’ qualitymanagement principle, Zoomlion hasgradually grown into a model of ‘qualitymanagement’ in the construction machineryindustry, for which it was recognized at thehighest level in China by being nominated forthe inaugural China Quality Award.AsWang Xuhong points out, “Using

innovative technology and management,Zoomlion manufactures high-qualityproducts. At the same time as it creates valuefor its customers and society, it also createsvalue for itself.”He also notes that in the course of

pursuing product quality, Zoomlion has alsoimproved its operational quality.

Global brandWang Xuhong went on to say that, havingachieved improvements in quality, the companyset a benchmark for internationalisationamong Chinese companies. The company hasdisplayed the strength of Chinese brands onthe global stage by becoming a world-renowned brand itself. In 2008, Zoomlion successfully acquired

the world’s third largest concrete machinerymanufacturer, CIFA of Italy, which laid thecornerstone for Chinese constructionmachinery to move into overseas markets inEurope and beyond. In recognition of Zoomlion’s contribution

to the Italian economy through post-mergerintegration, the President of Italy presentedthe International Leonardo Award toZoomlion Chairman Zhan Chunxin. This honour also illustrates the recognition

the Zoomlion brand has received in Europe.Since the end of 2013, Zoomlion has again

been accelerating the pace of itsglobalisation, with the announcement that ithas acquired Germany’s M-TEC, the world'sforemost dry-mixed mortar equipment brand.Analysts believe that Zoomlion will soon

become the world leader in the field of dry-mixed mortar equipment. In the international market, Zoomlion is

also increasingly demonstrating the influenceof independent Chinese brands, and isgradually realizing its dream of becoming a‘world-class enterprise,’ having demonstratedits ambition of creating a world-class brandfrom a five-star Chinese enterprise. CEAR

Construction of three new football playingfields for the City of Swan Council inWesternAustralia presented a challenge due to thesoft, sandy composition of the ground, whichprevented the use of conventional trucks.Contracting business Dowsing Concrete

found the answer to the problem of travelacross soft ground was a Terex TA6S 6t, allwheel drive swivel dumper.“The project involved removal of material

to construct a 3m wide walkway that runsthrough and connects the different playingfield within the new sports reserve.Material removed had to be dumped ready

for re-use on the next stage of construction.

“Our decision to use the Terex site dumperhas been a major time saver on this project, being able to travel across almost any terrainat speeds up to nearly 30km/hour,” saidBohdan Dowsing.“We can see many applications for the

dumper in our work constructing decorativelandscaping features, or kilometres offootpath. Investments in equipment like thisenable us to lay concrete efficiently over largeareas while maintaining complete qualitycontrol,” Bohdan added.Terex site dumpers are able to operate on

almost any job site. With the added benefit oftravelling at speeds up to nearly 30 30km/hour, they also have the advantage of high

manoeuvrability handling bulk material whenworking in spaces where access may belimited.Simple design and basic controls mean that

operators who are new to the machine, or whopossess relatively limited experience will findthem easy to operate. All models include afolding ROPS frame as standard equipment. Many operators find Terex are the ideal

solution for construction, rail works or anyother job site that presents space challengesfor larger trucks.Equipped with wet disc brakes and rapid

India’s Bhoir Group’s Liebherr LR 1300 - a 300tcrawler crane - created a breakthrough bylifting 8.3t with an 86m main boom and 89mluffing jib and derrick with 50t of suspendedcounterweight. This heavy lift was carried out at a radius of

53m and the load was placed at a height of118m.The crane is working in a Cement plant in

Chattisgarh, India. The magnificent boom combination and

excellent load capacity of the machine madethe lift extremely easy with utmost safety. This remarkable feature of the LR 1300 hasput the Bhoir Group well ahead. The LR 1300 is powered with a fuel

efficient 450kW diesel engine along with stateof the art Liebherr Litronic® control systembased on Canbus technology which providesefficient and precise control of all functionsincluding online load chart calculation. This blend of main boom and luffing jib

combinations makes the crane one of its kindto work across power plants, steel plants, cement plants, petrochemical plants and allother types of erection works. The crane can be fitted with a maximum of

98 m of main boom, a maximum of 113m ofluffing jib and various fixed jibs includingwindmill fixed jibs of 7m and 8m.Without the LR 1300 a bigger crane would

have been needed to execute the lift, thusrequiring more space and causing higher costs.Hence, the Liebherr LR 1300 proves to be aperfect crane for delivering success at greatheights. The Bhoir Group has four units of LR 1300

Four Alimak materials and personnel hoistsare being used at Emaar Square in Istanbul, amixed-use development that is one of thelargest private sector projects in Turkey. The hoists are working in conjunction with

14 tower cranes to supply all the lifting needs.Sera Yapi Construction, one of the project’s

main contractors is operating the hoists on a22-month rental agreement with Atilla DuralMumessillik Insaat Turizm Tic Ltd.The new development is set in Camlica, on

the Asian side of Istanbul, and will includeseven high-rise towers, a five-star hotel, residential and business units, a shoppingmall, an amusement park, an ice rink, a 2,400-seat cinema complex, and a six-levelunderground carpark.Emaar Square offers a variety of residential

options addressing different kinds of lifestylesthat include the ‘Residences’- inspired by thecultural and historic heritage of Istanbul-‘Heights’ - with a distinct and contemporaryarchitectural design – and ‘The AddressResidences’.The shopping centre is expected to

provide almost 5000 jobs and will serve notonly the needs of residents within the projectbut also citizens of Istanbul, with facilities forboth shopping and entertainment. The four Alimak hoists are all Scando 450

units, designed for materials and personnel, and can lift a maximum load of 2t to a heightof 150m.“We have fixed all four Alimak hoists to

the side of the excavation, where theentrance is located, ” says Mrs Aydin, projectcoordinator for Sepi Yapi.“The prime use for the hoists is personnel

transportation, as the cranes are handlingmost of the materials lifting.

“When the foundation work is complete weshall redeploy the hoists to the exterior of fourof the medium-rise structures, where theywill be used for both personnel and materials.“We decided on a rental agreement rather

than purchase, as Atilla Dural has alsosupplied most of the tower cranes on a rentalbasis, and consequently we have been able towork very closely with them on the liftingspecifications and cycles.”

Emaar Square will become a new business, residential and lifestyle hub, furtherpromoting the Asian side of Istanbul as adesirable place to live and work. The project blends apartments, offices, a

AsiaWaterjet Equipment Pte Ltd, theSingapore division of the Dubai-basedspecialist in high-pressure water jetting andhydrodemolition equipment, sees greatpotential in Singapore, following the initiativeby the government to reduce the use ofimmigrant contract workers by offering grantsand incentives for contractors to mechanise. The company has taken on the

distributorship in Singapore, Malaysia andHong Kong for Sweden’s Aquajet System ABHydrodemolition equipment - having beenthe distributor in the Middle East for the past13 years - and sold its first machine inSoutheast Asia to a tunnelling contractorworking on Singapore’s new Downtown LineStage 2 project.

The contractor used the machine, anAQUA CUTTER 710V Robot, to ‘break out’concrete to below the rebar on the diaphragmwalls of three underground stations in orderto tie in further elements of the structures.Breakout rates of 110 and 150m² at an

average depth of 65 - 75mm were achieved;meaning the contractor would have to haveemployed 30 - 50 jackhammer operators andassociated equipment to have achieved thesame result.AsiaWaterjet was founded by Mike Biddle,

who had spent time after the Kuwait war inthe early 1990s supplying high-pressurewater jet cold cutting equipment during thefire fighting and capping of damaged oilwells.AsiaWaterjet Equipment had evolved from

that experience, based at Jebel Ali Free Zonein Dubai and acting as the exclusive MiddleEast distributor for leading market suppliers. The Singapore division was founded

three years ago and covers a wide swathe ofAsia, from Korea to India, although notincluding China.

“We are not contractors, we are providingsolutions and equipment, to solve customers’problems, said Christopher Perkhill, AWE’sRegional Sales Manager. “Often it is notpossible to supply an ‘out of the box’ solutionso we provide engineered water jettingsolutions.”“We discuss with the customer what their

needs are, and visit the site to fully assess therequirements before offering a solution.Often we custom-design an equipmentpackage or specific application tool packagein our Dubai headquarters; supplying itcomplete with on site commissioning andoperator training included,” he added.“Singapore is our hub location for South

East Asia and as such we keep stock of all fastmoving parts and provide after sales servicesupport to the region.”In the Middle East AWE has supplied a

jetties. However in Singapore it is, believesChristopher Parkhill, the construction anddemolition sectors that will first start to useAquajet technology.

“The construction sector here is going tocontinue its strong performance for manyyears to come. When contractors see thebenefits of investing in Aquajet hyrodemolitionmachines, then I am sure that we are going tosee further sales of equipment.”Hydrodemolition works by pressurising and

widening existing pores and micro-cracks in aconcrete structure using high-pressure waterpenetration. The rate of removal is dependent on the

amount of water directed towards theconcrete surface, and consequently the areaand depth of removal can be closelycontrolled. Using a high pressure water jetalso makes it easy for the operator to workaround obstructions; particularly whencompared with, for example, conventionaljackhammer methods.“With hydrodemolition, once programmed

the jet moves rapidly and continuously over theselected area for removal,” says Mr Parkhill.“There is no percussive effect on the

surface, with the water jet penetrating thedeteriorated concrete, and there is nomodification of the concrete microstructureor pore structure.“Apart from very effective cleaning there is

also no effect on the rebar and, in fact, the

MRT contractor was using the AQUA CUTTERto clean away surplus concrete from the rebaron the three underground stations.”“Add to this the fact that you remove the

transmitted noise of jackhammers, and thatthe physical and medical problems that canarise for the jackhammer operators simply donot apply. Hydrodemolition is a powerfulargument in a country such as Singapore, where environmental concerns and safety areof prime importance.”
