Six months ago

I was invited to speak to a local retirement club’s monthly meeting. The topic was “How to make the most of your retirement years.” I thought it would be appropriate to expound upon the virtues of participating in something like our OLLI organization. I described what we do at KSU and the difference it can make in many of the lives of those who participate. I encouraged them to investigate classes they could take in areas in which they might have an interest. It was suggested they look into possible areas of mutual interest in learning about new subjects or in social activities that would help them make new friends and adjust to their life of retirement. It is never too late to learn something new. I pointed out the example of the founder of the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, Bernard Osher, who upon reaching the age of 80, finally began to take piano lessons. I also asked about their interest in travel and seeing parts of the world they have never visited.

Many of the 62 people in the audience stated they had many interests they would like to pursue but had not found anyone that shared the same desires. I asked them to describe what their interests were and

I proceeded to write their comments on a flip chart. The reaction from the audience was remarkable. Many of them made comments such as “I had no idea other people had the same desires I have.” After we finished the entries on the flip chart – 11 pages of comments – I suggested that we break up into seven groups that covered the topics we discussed and asked for volunteers to facilitate each group. Their meetings usually end by 8 p.m. We were still there at 11 p.m. New friends were made. Plans were made to investigate possibilities pertaining to each area from taking educational courses to planning trips. One of the tables was for singles who were reluctant to travel alone and who saw the opportunity to travel with other singles as a group.

I had not heard from this group since last April. A few weeks ago, I received a call inviting me to speak to them again at their October meeting. When I asked what the topic should be, they said they would take care of it. I went not knowing what to expect. It turned out to be a wonderful evening as they related how they had changed their lives as a result of their April meeting. They have a group that has taken classes at the local college. They have a group that meets weekly to play bridge.

They have a group that exercises together each week. They have taken two trips with more planned. The icing on the cake, which I will convey to Mr. Osher, is three of the members have begun taking piano lessons. I felt good about what happened. Even though there is not an OLLI chapter here, the philosophy of OLLI has changed the lives of these members for the better.

Hope to see you in class soon.

MICHELLE’S VIEW

Change can be scary but change allows us to grow and experience new things.

As we like to say at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute, “Curiosity is Fearless.” We encourage the OLLI student to try new things, learn and grow. Our program continues to change and grow, too. I’m happy to report that along with our renovated spaces, we have some new classes, and some new faces at the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute. Meg Webber joins us as the new OLLI Program Manager, and Donna McIntosh joins us as the OLLI Administrative Associate. They are both located in the OLLI suite and can help you with your questions or concerns.

Meg comes to us after a career in training and development in the newspaper industry as well as running her own art studio. Meg says, “I love working with the OLLI lifelong learners, they inspire me on a daily basis with their passion for learning and exploring new things.” Donna McIntosh has had a lengthy career in educa-tion, as a trainer and administrator most recently in early child-hood education. Donna, a lifelong learner herself, says, “What I like about working with OLLI is connecting with people.”

New classes have been developed for the OLLI program as well. We now have an extended Digital Photography class that will help you preserve and share your memories and creativity with others. The class is now six sessions long and early reviews are very positive! One learner said, “I’ve had this digital camera for years and on the first day of class I finally learned how to use many of the features and email pictures to my family.” Digital Photography is taught by another new face at OLLI, Todd Hull, a freelance photographer and portrait specialist.

Things are going well for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Kennesaw State University. Our students and club members continue to be inspired by great instructors and the camaraderie of sharing new experiences together. The Club Room renovations have been well received and have given us new computer spaces, new mingling places, and of course, the opportunity for lots of bridge! We look forward to a new year of growth and making a dif-ference in people’s lives as a leader in lifelong learning.

Interpretive WatercolorStudents will explore the innate ability of all to create art from life using the natural qualities of watercolor. We will start each painting from an abstract wet-in-wet base. Styles to be explored range from realistic to semi-abstract to abstract. Instructor will demonstrate at the beginning of every class and students will apply lessons immediately following the demonstration. Each student will subsequently receive personal instruction and feedback during the remaining class time. Topics include: color theory and palette set-up, methods of paint application compositional approaches, negative painting, sources of inspiration, and the possibilities of “play.” Students may work from their own photographs, sketchbooks, imaginations and/or from material provided by instructor. All levels are welcome, but some prior experience with the medium of watercolor would be helpful.$179, 30 HoursE. Watercolor with Pen & InkExplore the graphic possibilities of combining watercolor with expressive line in pen and ink. You don’t have to be a perfectionist to get beautiful and intriguing results with these simple tools and techniques. Often a less-than-appealing watercolor can become a successful work of art just by adding some interesting or defining lines and, conversely, a pen and ink drawing can be enhanced with color. Come have fun experimenting with these versatile mediums under the tutelage of a professional artist and signature member of The Georgia Watercolor Society and Watercolor Society of Alabama. Supply list will be emailed prior to class beginning.$179, 30 HoursE. Carr, professional artist, Instructor1/15/2015-3/19/201510 Session(s), Th9:30AM to 12:30PMCourse# 153SFNA2235A

The U.S. Constitution: Did the Bad Guys Win?The so-called Founding Fathers were anything but a cohesive group with a common agenda. This class will examine the stark disparity between the colonies and the conflicting world views that joined in forming a nation-state. It was not a gathering of visionaries creating a land of freedom and justice; it was more of two opposing magnets forced into a package that was certain to explode. In preparation for the class, read American Nations: A History of the Eleven Rival Regional Cultures of North America by Colin Woodard.$99, 12 HoursS. Historically familiar events and individuals are addressed, as well as could-have-beens and little known characters and events that had influence on the course of history. From there, we will look at the major battles of the war, and other related topics, culminating in the use of atomic bombs at Hiroshima and Nagasaki.$99, 12 Hours,E. Bridge in the 21st Century - Part III, DefenseThe third in a series of courses for beginning and advancing players offered by the American Contract Bridge League and KSU.

In this course we look at techniques for defeating contracts that declarer would make if we do not defend carefully. We start by looking at the guidelines for handling specific situations on defense: opening leads, third-hand play, second-hand play and signals. We move on to look at how the defenders establish winners and take their sure tricks. Then we see how the defenders can interfere with declarer’s plan to make the contract. Finally, we take a look at how the defenders formulate their plan and put it into action.
