I would like to present a

topic to all of our members for your serious consideration. This came about as a result of some recent personal experiences I have had involving individuals who were alone and, for different reasons, required the need for emergency assistance.

Everyone is familiar with the 9-1-1 system. By itself, 9-1-1 provides the ability to easily summon assistance when the need arises; this need seems to arise more often as we get older. Unfortunately, most of us don’t realize that much more needs to be done to provide adequate and life-saving assistance. For example, if you are successful and able to reach a 9-1-1 operator, there is a great deal of information that the first responders will need. This can be handled by the individual making the call. However, what if the person in need cannot speak, or has fallen and broken a leg, or fainted, or is unable to reach and use the phone?

Even in the best of situations, the first responders need a great deal of basic information to help them properly minister

to the individual in need. Besides being able to locate the individual, they need other information, such as medications, primary care physician, relatives or friends to contact, is there a “Will,” a “Designation Of Health Care Declaration,” a “Living Will Declaration,” a “Power Of Attorney.” If these documents exist, where can they be found and how can someone gain access to these items?

I will relate three personal experiences which got me interested in this topic. The first instance involved a neighbor who had a stroke in the morning after her husband had left for a round of golf. She was lying on the floor, unable to move and could not make a phone call. When her husband called and did not get a response, he assumed she was shopping. When he returned home, it was too late to save her life. A second situation involved a friend who suffered a heart attack, fell and broke his hip, and could not reach a telephone. He did not survive the day. A third situation involved a friend who suffered a stroke, managed to activate the pendant alarm he wore around his neck, and within nine minutes was in an ambulance on

his way to the hospital. He wore a bracelet which had a small flash drive memory device that could be read in any computer. It contained all of the information necessary for the first responders and the emergency room attendants to properly assist him without further jeopardizing his life. He has had a great recovery and is presently serving on a committee with me that is researching methods available to us today that, as his pendant and bracelet proved, can save lives.

My guess is that all of you are familiar with similar circumstances involving someone you know. All I am suggesting is that you look into the many choices available to you to assist us and our loved ones in a time of emergency. You can find a wealth of information on this topic on the Internet. You might just help save a life and it could be your own.

I apologize for writing a serious article and hereby give my OLLI pledge that I won’t do it again (unless it is absolutely necessary - such as how to select a good vintage wine).

Hope to see you in class soon.

MICHELLE’S VIEW

Many of you have heard the

catch phrase “lifelong learner” all too often, but do you really understand the true meaning behind it? How many of us can say that we truly live our lives striving to be a lifelong learn-er by broadening our minds every single day? How many of us have a true thirst for knowledge that only grows stronger when you attempt to quench it?

Wikipedia defines lifelong learning as the “ongoing, voluntarily and self-motivated pursuit of knowledge for either personal or professional reasons.” Embracing knowl-edge every day on a volunteer, self-seeking manner is so natural for many of us that we don’t even realize we are doing it.

There are those of us that sit in a conver-sation with friends or coworkers who are always asking the questions “why” and “how do you know that?” Others may sit quietly taking in all the information and processing it so that you can do your own research later for validation or for a deeper understanding.

As we get older, our thirst tends to grow stronger and we begin to embrace the things we learn. I for one can’t remember being excited about all my classes I had to take in middle school, high school and even college – many of us questioned why they were needed and how they would help us in our future. I never question that now, I seek out knowledge – the more I can learn the better off I am.

Knowledge is empowering, invigorat-ing and extremely energizing. OLLI embraces this concept and relentlessly seeks out courses to offer that do just that. Everything from history, arts, languages, health and much more – we want our members to feel empowered after taking a course with us. Our OLLI members go away from us thirsty, they walk away searching for more, and they know just where to come. Our courses are changing on a regular basis so that we don’t become old news to our knowledge explorers – every time you visit with us, it is like you are going a new voyage.

Come explore with us; we are ready to embark on a journey with you!

Women and MoneyThrough divorce, death of a spouse, or choice, more women are more likely to be living on their own and assuming sole responsibility for making their own financial decisions than ever before.

Women live an average of 4.9 years longer than men. This fact alone shows that women face several financial challenges including: · A decrease in income due to the loss of a spouse. · The need for women to stretch their retirement savings over a longer period of time. · Increasing health-care costs related to chronic health conditions due to aging, including the increasing costs for medications taken over a longer period of time. · The fact that women are likely to provide some long-term care for a spouse or loved one, yet women are more apt to face their own need for long-term care alone. · The fact that women who outlive their spouses will probably bear the ultimate responsibility for the disposition of their marital estate.

Women today have never been in a better position to achieve financial security for themselves and their families. Yet seizing the opportunity for long-term financial success requires awareness of potential issues and careful planning.$49, 2.5 Hours, T.
