Il nome Catriel deriva dallaFamiglia di Indios Mapucheoriginari e signori dei luoghi diSierras Bayas , nelle vicinanzedell’odierna Buenos Aires.Sierras Bayas ha una storiache vive nel ricordo d’ogniabitante del luogo, nella con-servazione delle antiche co-struzioni e testimonianzeaffascinanti del suo passato.Nelle sue montagne si puòascoltare le grida dei suoi va-lenti e valorosi indios: i Catrie-les che difesero questoluogo.

The name Catriel derives fromthe Indios Mapuche’s family,original inhabitants and lordsof Sierras Bayas, on the out-skirts of the modern BuenosAires. The history of SierrasBayas lives in the memory ofevery single inhabitant of theplace, in the conservation ofits ancient buildings, and inthe charming witnesses of itspast. Catriel fu costruito nel 1962 dalCantiere Sanchez di BuenosAires su ordine della compagniapetrolifera argentina YPF per la-vorare come rimorchiatore di al-tura a vapore.Nel 1999 venneacquistato da una società di na-vigazione argentina per essereutilizzato per i trasporti sul fiumeParanà, ridotti successivamentea causa della crisi economicache travagliò il Paese. Nel 2004Catriel viene notato mentre è instato di abbandono al porto dellaBoca di Buenos Aires dall’attualeArmatore che, innamoratosi dellesue linee eleganti e classiche ,decide di comperarlo per ristrut-turarlo a yacht.Dopo lo studiopreliminare di fattibilità, inizia il la-voro di restauro e di ammoder-namento che mantiene lecaratteristiche strutturali origina-rie della barca da lavoro. La rico-struzione è affidata al cantiereTecnao srl di Buenos Aires conla direzione dell’attuale Armatoree con materiali e strutture prove-nienti in gran parte dall’Italia.Il tremarzo 2007 la ristrutturazionedelle parti strutturali è terminatae Catriel affronta il primo viaggiodella sua nuova vita navigandosul fiume Paranà da BuenosAires alle cascate di Iguazú e ri-torno, per circa 1.800 miglianautiche, al comando del capi-tano Gabriel Simonini e del suoequipaggio.Nel dicembre 2007Catriel è pronto per attraversarel’Atlantico.La ristrutturazione èterminata (mancano solamentefiniture interne di dettaglio)esalpa quindi da Buenos AiresPercorse più di 7.000 miglia nau-tiche ,arriva al PortoAntico,senzail più piccolo problema, dopo 35giorni di navigazione.

In 2004 so-meone noticed the Catriel, whichwas, by that time, abandoned inBuenos Aires. It was the presentship-owner who, charmed by herelegant and classical shapes, de-cided to buy her and to transformher into a yacht. After a prelimi-nary study of the feasibility of theproject, repair and modernizationworks started with the aim tomaintain the original structuralfeatures of the deep-sea towboat.Repair works were entrusted toTecnao srl, a shipyard in BuenosAires under the direction of thecurrent ship owner; a great manymaterials and structures camefrom Italy. March 3rd, 2007: repairworks of structural parts were fi-nished and the Cartriel made thefirst voyage of her new life naviga-ting the Paranà river, from BuenosAires up to Iguazù waterfalls andfrom there back to Buenos Aires.She covered about 1,800 milesunder the command of CaptainGabriel Simonini and his crew. InDecember 2007 the Catriel wasready to cross the Atlantic. Repairworks were finished (only internaldetail finishes were missing) soshe sailed from Buenos Aires.She covered more than 7,000sea miles, and docked in PortoAntico, without the slightest pro-blem after 35 days of sea voyage.
