How does a smaller interceptor outperform a larger interceptor?

Flow patt ern. Gravity grease interceptors are assumed to work according to Stokes Law4

when sized for a minimum of 30 minutes retention time. However, WERF’s 2008 report1

concluded that retention time alone was insuffi cient to assure proper separation. The report

also identifi ed uncontrolled inlet velocity and turbulence as the primary cause of short

circuiting, leading to bypass in traditional gravity designs.

NOTE: the above graphics depict the certifi ed capacities of select Great Basin™ models vs. typical gravity interceptors, and should not be used for sizing cross

reference. See pages 17-18 for sizing recommendations. Grease capacities for gravity units shown above based on 25% rule with 50/50 FOG to solids ratio.

Gravity interceptors are considered full when 25% of their

wet volume consists of FOG, solids or both. A typical core

sample from a gravity interceptor will show less FOG than

solids because of periodic short circuiting1.

A core sample of a Great Basin™ hydromechanical

interceptor has a deeper FOG layer than a gravity

interceptor because the design is more effi cient and does

not suff er from short circuiting.

It is common for a Great Basin™ interceptor to have a

combined FOG / solids layer well over 50% of its wet volume

while still maintaining greater than 90% effi ciency (see

Summary of Great Basin™ Performance table on page 16).

GREAT BASIN™ PRODUCT SELECTIONGrease Interceptor Sizing Guidelines

Schier recommends two steps for grease interceptor sizing: fi rst by fl ow rate per plumbing code requirements, then by grease capacity for pump-out cycle. Review plumbing code and locally adopted ordinances for specifi c requirements (see pages 21-22).

Step 1 of 2: size by fl ow rate

Drainage system fl ow rate (GPM) should be determined by the size of the interceptor’s inlet pipe. Schier

recommends calculating fl ow rate based on half-pipe fl ows (2 - minute drainage period) as per standard

practice for engineered plumbing systems.

Did You Know?

WERF’s 2008 report1 included comprehensive testing of fl ow rates in the grease waste lines at several

diff erent food service establishments. The study indicates that fi xtures are used very intermitt ently and

signifi cantly less than calculations for full or half pipe fl ows. Sizing for fl ow rate, while important, should

not be the sole method for grease interceptor selection.

The following table provides an extrapolated summary:

Step 2 of 2: calculate grease capacity

After sizing for fl ow rate, calculate the grease capacity needed per the formula below. Recommended interceptor

should have adequate grease storage capacity to support desired pump-out frequency.

includes eff ective regulations and enforcement, kitchen best

management practices and appropriately sized and maintained

grease interceptors.

Schier Products is committ ed to forging a partnership with

the pretreatment community to help reduce and eliminate the

problems associated with FOG in conveyance systems. To that end

we pledge to:

• Design, test and manufacture products that provide the best

separation effi ciency, the most durable construction and the

simplest installation, inspection and maintenance features

• Listen to your ideas regarding new and improved products

• Share product problems and solutions from the fi eld

• Provide information and education on emerging technologies, industry

studies and best practices from jurisdictions across the country

NOTE: plumbing code map and digests may not be applicable in some situations. Review plumbing codes and any locally adopted ordinances for specifi c requirements regarding sizing, installation and maintenance of grease interceptors.

IPC (2012)6 – Hydromechanical Grease Interceptors shall be tested and sized in accordance to ASME A112.14.3, CSA B481.1 or PDI G101. Gravity Grease Interceptors (generally 300 gallons in size or larger) are exempt from those requirements. Dishwashers (without prerinse sinks) must connect to a grease interceptor. Food waste grinders that discharge to a grease interceptor must fi rst be routed through a solids interceptor.

UPC (2012)7 – Hydromechanical Grease Interceptors (HGI) shall be tested and rated in accordance to ASME A112.14.3, CSA B481.1 or PDI G101. HGI sizing shall be according to Table 1014.2.1 by fi xture volume or by pipe diameter. HGI installation is permitt ed outdoors or indoors. Gravity Grease Interceptors (GGI) shall comply with IAPMO/ANSI Z1001 and shall be sized by Drainage Fixture Units to determine the liquid gallon holding capacity (minimum 500 gallons). Food waste grinders and dishwashers shall not be connected to or discharge to any grease interceptor unless specifi cally required or permitt ed by the Authority Having Jurisdiction.

NPCC (2010)8 – Every interceptor shall have suffi cient capacity to perform the service for which it is provided. Any equipment discharging waste with organic solids shall not be located upstream of a grease interceptor unless it is fi rst routed through a solids interceptor. Although it is not listed in the plumbing code, most jurisdictions in Canada now require compliance with CSA B481.1.

NSPC (2012)9 – Hydromechanical Grease Interceptors (HGI) shall comply with ASME A112.14.3 or PDI G101. Sizing shall be in accordance to PDI G101, Table 6.2.10 or the manufacturer’s instruction. Where a food waste grinder discharges through an HGI it must be routed through a solids interceptor prior to the grease interceptor. Gravity Grease Interceptors (GGI) shall be sized and designed by a locally registered and licensed design professional. GGIs shall be sized by gallons factoring a 30-minute retention time at half pipe fl ows per Appendix K. Food waste grinders may discharge directly to a GGI. Dishwashers are permitt ed to be routed to HGIs or GGIs.

MODEL PLUMBING CODES

Illinois Plumbing Code (2005)10 – Grease interceptors shall be made from corrosion-resistant materials, shall have water-tight covers securely fastened in place and shall meet PDI-G101 or ASME A112.14.3. A grease interceptor located on the same fl oor as the fi xture shall have one-half the liquid holding capacity of the fi xture. A grease interceptor located on a fl oor below the fi xture shall have sixty percent of the liquid holding capacity of the fi xture. Where two or more sinks or receptacles are connected to an interceptor the liquid holding capacity shall be based on the combined volume of the fi xtures served. No grease interceptor shall receive the discharge from a food waste disposal or a commercial dish washing machine.

Kentucky State Plumbing Law (2013)11 – Kentucky Administrative Regulations (Title 815 Public Protection Cabinet Department of Housing, Buildings and Construction Chapter 20 Plumbing, 110 Traps and Clean-outs, section 11 Grease Traps) mandates that grease traps be installed for a restaurant, food service establishment or other business establishment as required by municipal ordinance. Section 5 of the code titled Content of Approved Parts or Materials List (APML) provides a list of approved manufacturers of grease interceptors by name and model number and also lists any specifi c requirements regarding the installation of the approved interceptor. Models PATG-1820, PATG-2025, PATG-2635, PATG-3050, GB-15, GB-20, GB-25, GB-35, GB-50, GB-75 and GB-250 are approved for installation. Models GB-75 and GB-250 are approved with the installation of accessible, two-way cleanouts on the inlet and the outlet and shall not receive waste from food waste disposal units.

Louisiana Plumbing Code (2013)12 – Grease Interceptors (GI) are defi ned as having less than 125 gallons capacity, must comply with ASME A112.14.3 or PDI-G101 and must have a minimum fl ow rate of 20 GPM. Large Capacity Grease Interceptors (LCGI) are defi ned as having at least 125 gallons capacity and comply with ASME A112.14.3 or PDI-G101. Grease Traps (GT) are defi ned as having at least 125 gallons capacity and are generally installed outdoors. The code requires either a GT or LCGI for all instances of new construction or substantial renovation. GIs must be specially approved by the plumbing offi cial when permissible. GT and LCGI sizing is calculated in gallons and factors number of persons served during the largest 1-hour meal period and whether the unit is installed with or without a garbage grinder. Alternatively when number of persons is not available, sizing may also be calculated by factoring square footage of the dining area.

Massachusett s Plumbing Code (2013)13 – Grease interceptors shall not be installed unless sized, tested and certifi ed according to PDI-G101 or ASME A112.14.3, and must further be listed by the Massachusett s Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gas Fitt ers. Food waste grinders shall not discharge through a grease interceptor. Grease interceptors installed inside buildings shall be sized in accordance with PDI-G101, ASME A112.14.3 or 248 CMR 10.09. When an outside grease interceptor is installed, the entire installation within the property line shall comply with 248 CMR 10.03. All Schier Great Basin models have been approved by the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfi tt ers for installation in the State of Massachusett s.

Minnesota Plumbing Code (2012)14 – Hydromechanical Grease Interceptors (HGI) shall comply with ASME A112.14.3, may be installed indoors or outdoors and shall be sized for fl ow rate by fi xture volume or by pipe diameter. Gravity Grease Interceptors (GGI) shall comply with IAPMO/ANSI Z1001 or ASTM C1613 and shall be sized by Drainage Fixture Units to determine the liquid gallon holding capacity (minimum 500 gallons). Grease interceptors constructed of metal, concrete or other materials subject to corrosion shall have protective treatment approved by the manufacturer. Food waste grinders and dishwashers may discharge to a gravity grease interceptor where permitt ed by the manufacturer and the administrative authority.

Wisconsin Administrative Code (2013)15 – Interior interceptors are allowed and sized by fi xture volume to calculate fl ow rate, and must have a minimum fl ow rate of 15 GPM. Exterior interceptors must be at least 750 gallons when connected to the municipal sewer or 1,000 gallons when connected to a private onsite wastewater system. Exterior interceptors are sized using one of two formulas depending on facility type. The GB-250 may be sized for exterior installations by fl ow rate or by using the exterior sizing formulas located in the code. All exterior GB-250 units must be preceded by a solids interceptor.

It has been shown that the most successful FOG abatement programs address all of the following topic areas:

kitchen fi xtures, interceptor standards and ratings, interceptor sizing, mandated design elements, FOG droplet size and

numeric limits, interceptor materials of construction and interceptor maintenance.

GREAT BASIN™ REGULATORY COMPLIANCE

Summary: the only way for a jurisdiction to ensure FSEs do

not bypass FOG to the collection system is to mandate that

all kitchen fi xtures be routed to a properly sized, installed and

maintained grease interceptor. However, jurisdictions should

weigh the risks and rewards of routing dishwashers and food

waste disposal units to a grease interceptor.

Kitchen Fixtures

Some plumbing codes have exacerbated FOG problems by using

vague language on which fi xtures should be routed through an

interceptor. Extensive fi eld inspections have proven that FOG is

being introduced through every fi xture in the kitchen at one point

or another.

There are two types of kitchen fi xtures that need

special consideration:

1. Dishwashers: dishwasher discharge is a high-temperature mixture

of FOG, solids, water and surfactants from excess detergent.

Testing has shown that higher temperatures actually assist in

separation performance16. However, interceptors are designed to

separate free fl oating FOG, not FOG that has been emulsifi ed by

surfactants. There are two schools of thought on this topic, those

who feel that plumbing the dishwasher to the interceptor is a net

positive for FOG capture and those who feel it is a net negative.

Schier did not fi nd any evidence to prove either school of thought

“more correct.”

2. Food waste disposal units: many food service establishments (FSEs)

scrape dirty dishes into their food waste disposal unit increasing

FOG-laden solids that can be discharged to the collection system.

This is a good reason to route these fi xtures to a grease interceptor.

However, extra solids loading from a food waste disposal unit can

be problematic. To help prevent the interceptor from prematurely

fi lling up with food waste, jurisdictions can require a solids

interceptor after a food waste disposal unit or consider eliminating

food waste disposal units altogether to improve interceptor

performance and reduce the amount of total suspended solids

(TSS) entering the collection system.

Interceptor Standards and Ratings

Plumbing codes recognize three standards that govern the

performance of hydromechanical grease interceptors (HGI)

across the United States and Canada: ASME A112.14.3, PDI-G101

and CSA B481.1. All three standards use the same testing and

rating procedure (see more info on page 16). Interceptors tested

and rated in accordance with one of these standards help assure

jurisdictions that they work effi ciently up to their rated capacity.

The primary standard governing gravity grease interceptors (GGI)

is IAPMO/ANSI Z1001, which outlines design and construction

elements, but does not require a performance test and off ers

no ratings.

Summary: for a more eff ective pretreatment program,

jurisdictions should focus on approving standards with

performance testing requirements and ratings that give

jurisdictions a higher degree of confi dence that these devices will

operate correctly in the fi eld, rather than design and construction

standards which provide no assurance of performance.

ASME A112.14.3 Test Apparatus. See page 16 for more information.

Summary: Schier’s Grease Production Sizing Method (see pages 17-18) provides a more accurate way to size grease interceptors that considers both the fl ow rate and the amount of grease likely to be produced. This allows for the selection of a grease interceptor that can handle the incoming fl ow rate while providing enough capacity to ensure that an FSE can aff ord to keep their interceptor properly maintained.

Interceptor Sizing

Current sizing guidelines found in plumbing codes, interceptor standards and pretreatment ordinances focus on sizing grease interceptors by fl ow rate, and sometimes by extension, retention time. The problem with this approach is that there is no correlation between fl ow rate and the amount of FOG present in the waste stream. FOG type and concentration is a function of menu type and the amount of food being produced. For example, a restaurant serving hamburgers and deep fried food will produce more greasy waste per meal than a sandwich shop. However, if both FSEs have similar kitchens and typical fl ow rate based sizing is applied, both facilities could end up with the same interceptor. This creates both a compliance and enforcement problem.

Mandated Design Elements

FOG Droplet Size and Numeric Limits

The above graphic depicts the rise rate of FOG by micron size (50 microns

and 150 microns) at a constant fl ow rate of 100 GPM, temperature of 150º F

and a specifi c gravity of 0.9. Microns shown not actual size.

Summary: it is not advisable to use numeric concentration

limits on grease interceptors as the determining factor

for compliance enforcement. Recognizing that certifi ed

interceptors will perform satisfactorily up to their rated

capacity, a more eff ective approach is to enforce proper and

regular interceptor maintenance.

Larger grease droplets separate more quickly than smaller

droplets. Grease interceptors are designed to operate based on

gravity diff erential separation of FOG droplets roughly 150 microns

in size or larger17. It is impractical to remove anything smaller

than 150 microns because the interceptor would have to be

exponentially larger to allow smaller droplet sizes to separate (see

left graphic).

However, because jurisdictions are required to set local limits

on unauthorized pollutant discharges, some aff ect numeric

concentration limits on FOG such as 100 PPM (mg/L). Compliance

is typically verifi ed by applying EPA test method 1664A18 to an

effl uent grab sample.

There are two problems with mandating numeric limits for FOG:

1. FOG droplets less than 150 microns in size are common in a

restaurant waste stream but are too small to be separated by

an interceptor. However, an effl uent grab sample containing a

signifi cant amount of emulsifi ed FOG smaller than 150 microns

may suggest non-compliance when in fact the interceptor is

operating correctly. This creates an enforcement problem for

the jurisdiction.

2. EPA test method 1664A18 is fl awed, yielding a high degree of

variability in test results. According to the 2008 WERF study1

“as an indirect outcome of this study, the FOG concentration

measurement results showed that the EPA test method

1664A18 displayed signifi cant variability when measuring

known concentrations of total oil and grease. Variability in the

measured concentration was approximately 40%, making it

impossible to confi rm or refute whether the grease interceptor

is properly achieving the required effl uent limit.”

When jurisdictions mandate

prescriptive design elements

for grease interceptors, such

as requiring baffl es or concrete

construction they limit FOG

abatement eff orts by stifl ing

both proven and emerging

technologies and third party

research such as the 2008

Water Environment Research

Foundation (WERF) report1.

Many grease interceptors today owe their designs to the criteria

developed at the Iowa Institute of Hydraulic Research (IIHR) in

the early 1940s. The key principles of design were controlled inlet

velocity and gravity diff erential separation according to Stokes Law

Summary: grease interceptor technologies have greatly

improved over the past 10 years, providing bett er effi ciencies

and more storage capacities than ever before. For this reason,

jurisdictions should avoid mandating prescriptive design

elements for interceptors which may prevent a jurisdiction from

taking advantage of improved designs.

(an equation which predicts the rise rate of a droplet of oil in static

water based on its size, temperature, specifi c gravity, velocity

and viscosity).

Early testing by the IIHR, published in their 1944 article Symposium

on Grease Removal, Design and Operation of Grease Interceptors4

indicates that infl uent velocity in the interceptor must be near

0.08 to 0.10 ft/sec to allow FOG to separate by gravity according

to Stokes Law. When interceptors included internal baffl es, it was

discovered that the infl uent velocity needed to be lower by half

(near 0.04 to 0.05 ft/sec) to compensate for turbulence created by

the baffl es.

Some jurisdictions prefer larger gravity grease interceptors (GGI)

accepting the common arguments that they are designed around

the principle of Stokes Law4 and that internal baffl es enhance

performance. The 2008 WERF report1 found two problems that

undermine these arguments: the inability of GGIs to control

infl uent velocity and regions of higher velocity zones created by the

inclusion of an internal baffl e wall. These problems combine in an

interceptor causing a turbulent fl ow path which leads to “short-

circuiting” (unexpected bypass). The 2008 WERF report1 has raised

serious questions about assumed effi ciencies and capacities of

these devices.

GREAT BASIN™ REGULATORY COMPLIANCEInterceptor Materials of Construction

As FOG breaks down in an interceptor, anaerobic bacteria convert naturally occurring sulfate molecules into sulfi des, which form hydrogen sulfi de gas (H

2S) in the free air space of the interceptor.

Airborne aerobic bacteria consume hydrogen sulfi de gas and convert it into sulfuric acid (H

2SO

4) in the wastewater of the

interceptor. Sulfuric acid oxidizes metal causing a reaction of iron with water to form iron oxide (rust). Similarly sulfuric acid reacts with calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)

2) in concrete forming calcium

sulfate (CaSO4) that in the presence of water (H

2O) creates gypsum

(CaSO4·2H

2O). Both metal and concrete are guaranteed to fail over

time due to these processes.

A recent study submitt ed to the University of North Carolina19 concluded that FOG deposits in sewer piping systems are the result of free fatt y acids reacting with metals both in the headspace above the waste water and in the waste water area itself. The most common metals found in tested FOG deposits were calcium and iron from hard water and concrete and steel corrosion.

Summary: grease interceptors should be constructed of

non-corrosive materials (i.e. polyethylene, fi berglass, etc.) that

will not react with hydrogen sulfi de gas or sulfuric acid. This

eliminates interceptor corrosion and may help reduce FOG

deposit creation.

SEWER BLOCKAGE FORMATION19

The start of a blocked pipe begins when grease and solids collect on the top and sides of the pipe interior.

The build-up increases over time when grease and other debris are washed down the drain.

Excessive accumulation will restrict the fl ow of wastewater and can result in a sanitary sewer overfl ow.

Interceptor Maintenance

Summary: ultimately it is up to the FSE to keep an interceptor

properly maintained; however there are a few things a

jurisdiction can do to help:

• Make sure the FSE knows how much grease their interceptor

can hold

• Use Schier’s grease production sizing tool to show an FSE

how much grease they are producing and therefore how

often they will need to maintain their interceptor

• Give the FSE Schier’s recommended kitchen BMPs (see page

26) which will help them mitigate the amount of grease and

solids they introduce to their interceptor

All grease interceptors have a maximum grease holding capacity,

whether tested and rated or not. When that capacity is exceeded an

interceptor will bypass grease to the collection system. It is critical

that grease interceptors be maintained as they become full and

not allowed to fi ll beyond that point. Many jurisdictions use the 25%

rule (when FOG and/or solids comprise 25% or more of the overall

tank volume), to determine when an interceptor is full and apply the

rule to both HGIs and GGIs. This rule is the industry’s conservative

estimate of capacities and assumes that FOG and solids loading

equally aff ect interceptor effi ciency. While that may be true for older

hydromechanical and gravity interceptor designs, it isn’t necessarily

true for newer technologies.

Advancements in grease interceptor designs have led and are

leading to more effi cient interceptors with substantially larger

storage capacities, rendering the 25% rule irrelevant for these

devices. To determine the FOG capacity of an interceptor as a

percentage, fi rst take the rated grease storage capacity in pounds

and divide that number by 7.3 (weight of the lard used in the test),

which converts the grease from pounds to gallons. Then, take the

grease capacity in gallons and divide that by the total wett ed volume

of the interceptor in gallons. For example, the Schier Products

GB-250 has a grease storage capacity of 1,076 lbs, dividing that by

Contractor cleaning above grade GB-35

7.3 converts it into 147.4

gallons. The interceptor

has a total wett ed

volume of 275 gallons.

Dividing 147.4 by 275

yields 54%, meaning

that the GB-250 has a

grease storage capacity

of 54% of its total wett ed

volume. Grease storage

capacity is independent

of solids storage

capacity, which in the

GB-250 is 105 gallons.

Indirect Connections for Flow Rates up to 50 GPM

confi g. a — above grade (no fl oor sink) confi g. b — below grade (with fl oor sink)

VENTVENT

VENT

How overfl ows happen

In an installation with no air gaps, the weight of the water provides the head pressure needed to force the fl ow through the piping and standing

water in the interceptor. When indirect connections are introduced, there is no longer enough head pressure. For this reason, troubleshooting

steps may be required to restrict fl ow from the fi xtures and prevent overfl ow at the air gap.

Confi g. a & b above: sinks drain normally until the fl ow is thrott led by the size of the inlet pipe ( ), the fl ow control ( ), standing water in the

interceptor ( ) or a combination of all three. This causes water to “stack up” back toward the sink. During this stack up, water is still fl owing

through the interceptor. The unrestricted fl ow rate from the sinks exceeds the downstream restrictions, and may cause an overfl ow event at

the indirect connect discharge point(s)( ).

Troubleshooting procedure for eliminating indirect connection overfl ows

Three factors aff ect fl ow rate and need to be considered when installing a grease

interceptor with indirect connections: depth and number of sink bowls, size and

length of inlet piping, fl ow rate of interceptor. Consider these when using the

following troubleshooting procedure:

step 1. Remove fl ow control plate ( ) from inlet diff user. Remove cover from

unit to verify that the inlet/outlet diff users don’t become submerged. Cut off top

of inlet diff user (ensure upstream sewer gas trap exists prior to cutt ing).

step 2. Install a rubber fl ow restriction end cap at each indirect connect

discharge point ( ). Punch a fl ow control orifi ce into rubber fl ow restriction

cap until optimal orifi ce size (fl ow rate) is achieved. Do this until the maximum

“open” position without an overfl ow is determined. Leave caps in place if local

code allows, or replace caps with tailpieces of matching orifi ce size. If the

maximum “open” position results in the sink being rendered unusable due to

slow drainage, the interceptor must be increased in size and/or moved further

downstream from the indirection connection.

Did You Know?

Regardless of sink volume (gallons), it’s depth that determines peak fl ow rate. The average

commercial sink bowl will produce an unrestricted peak fl ow rate of 22.5 GPM when

provided with 2" tailpieces. The peak fl ow rate occurs for the fi rst few seconds after the

stopper is pulled, then fl ow rate decreases. However, it is not appropriate to add peak fl ow

rates of all kitchen fi xtures (including sink bowls) together to get a combined peak fl ow

rate, because the drainage piping thrott les fl ow. In WERF’s 2008 report1, they found that

the maximum fl ow rate to any grease interceptor was 45 GPM.

When to Use the Flow Control Plate

The fl ow control plate (red) serves to keep fl ow rates at or below the rated capacity of

the interceptor. In many installation scenarios, the fl ow to the unit will never exceed the

rated fl ow of the unit, and thus the fl ow plate should be removed. Removing the fl ow plate

in these scenarios will not aff ect the separation performance of the unit, but will prevent

clogs. Use the guidelines below to determine when the fl ow plate should be installed:

Install fl ow plate when:

• Unit is rated at 35 GPM or below (note: built-in fl ow control is provided pre-installed on

models GB-15 through GB-35 and uninstalled on models GB-50 through GB-250)

• Unit is installed 13 ft. or more below kitchen fi xtures (as in basement installations)

GB-15 Inlet Diff user

vent stack

kitchen fl oor

vent must terminate above the top rim of the sink

add this vent if unit is installed one or more fl oors below the fi xtures being served (i.e. basement installations, etc.)

Additional Venting for Floor-Below Installations

Background: grease interceptors are

designed to handle atmospheric pressure.

When plumbing fi xtures are drained quickly, air

is trapped and pressurized in the downstream

piping. If not properly vented, dangerous

pressurization of the interceptor can occur.

Expanding Grease Capacity

typical not typicalseries installations parallel installations

Background: series installations have been standard practice

for over 30 years in some cities.

How it works: when installed in series, only the primary tank

is responsible for calibrating the fl ow rate (ex: two GB-250 units

installed in series will fl ow up to 100 GPM). Initially the fi rst unit will

fi ll up with grease while passing some grease to subsequent unit(s).

As the grease layer in the fi rst unit grows, more grease will pass to

subsequent units. When it reaches maximum capacity, the fi rst unit

will pass all grease to subsequent unit(s).

Background: true fi eld fl ow rates are almost never over 100 GPM.

The vast majority of fl ow rates are under 50 GPM. Average fi eld

fl ow rates are under 3 GPM1. See chart on page 17 for more info.

How it works: when installed in parallel with the addition of a

Flow Splitt er™, the system may achieve the combined fl ow rate

of all interceptors (ex: two GB-250 units installed in parallel will

fl ow up to 200 GPM). The Flow Splitt er™ is designed to handle

a wide range of fl ows from as low as 1 GPM up to the total

combined fl ow rates of all interceptors.

Consult full installation instructions for fl ow

control requirements.

Due to fl ow rate based sizing methods used by some

jurisdictions, interceptor fl ow rates greater than 100 GPM may

sometimes be required. Discuss with your Schier representative

prior to design/installation.

Option 3: size by fl ow rate for elevator pits

ASME A17.1-2007/CSA B44-07 is the Safety Code for Elevators and Escalators.

It intended to serve as the basis for the design construction, installation,

operation, testing, inspection, maintenance, alteration and repair of elevators,

dumbwaiters, escalators, moving walks and material lifts. Section 2.2 details the

requirements for pits for all elevators governed by the code. 2.2.2.3 mandates

that permanent provision be made to prevent accumulation of ground water

in the pit, while 2.2.2.4 requires the necessary fl oor drain or sump pump meet

the applicable plumbing code for the jurisdiction. 2.2.2.5 requires all elevators

with Firefi ghters’ Emergency Operation to have a drain or sump pump. A sump

pump or drain shall have the capacity to remove 3,000 gallons per hour

(50 gpm) per elevator.

IPC mandates the installation of an oil separator for hydraulic elevator pits,

unless there is an approved alarm system installed. The intent of the code is to

prevent an oil discharge to the sanitary drainage system. Some manufacturers

produce a specially fi tt ed sump pump with an oil sensor and alarm unit which

functions to shut off the pump if oil is detected in the pit. For elevators with

Firefi ghters’ Emergency Operation the pit must be kept clear of accumulated

water as required in ASME A17.1-2007/CSA B44-07 section 2.2.2.5. However, it

may be possible for a sump pump with an oil sensor to shut off during a fi re

allowing the pit to fi ll with sprinkler water undermining a fi refi ghting operation.

The installation of an oil interceptor downstream of a sump pump satisfi es

both the elevator and plumbing codes.

Sizing Guidelines Following an Elevator Sump

First, select an oil separator that meets the pump fl ow rate. Then, choose oil separator with rating that is equal to or greater than the worst

possible discharge of hydraulic fl uid.

NOTE: plumbing map and code digests may not be applicable in some situations. Review plumbing codes and any locally adopted ordinances for specifi c requirements regarding sizing, installation and maintenance of oil interceptors.

IPC (2012)6 – Oil separators are required at repair garages, car-washing facilities, at factories where oily and fl ammable liquid wastes are produced and in hydraulic elevator pits (unless there is an approved alarm system installed). Oil separators shall be listed and labeled or must meet the design and sizing requirements of sections 1003.4.2.1 and 1003.4.2.2. Sizing in the code applies to garages and service stations and uses the square footage of the area drained. Oil separators are not required in parking garages in which servicing, repairing or washing is not conducted, and in which gasoline is not dispensed. Areas of commercial garages utilized only for storage of automobiles are also not required to be drained through an oil separator.

UPC (2012)7 – Oil / fl ammable liquid interceptors are required for repair garages and gasoline stations with grease racks or grease pits and factories that have oily, fl ammable or both types of wastes as a result of manufacturing, storage, maintenance, repair or testing processes. The vapor compartment shall be independently vented to the outer air. There are two approved standards for oil interceptors, IAPMO PS-80 or ASTM D6104. Where an interceptor is provided with an overfl ow line, an approved waste oil tank having a minimum capacity of 550 gallons shall be installed. Oil interceptors shall be listed and labeled or must meet the design and sizing requirements of section 1017.2. Sizing in the code is either based on the number of vehicles serviced, stored or both. Where vehicles are serviced only, the sizing is based on the square footage of the facility.

NPCC (2010)8 – Where the discharge from a fi xture may contain oil or gasoline, an oil interceptor shall be installed. Every oil interceptor shall be provided with 2 vent pipes that connect to the interceptor at opposite ends, extend to outside air and terminate not less than 2 meters above ground and at elevations diff ering by at least 300 millimeters. The vent pipes are permitt ed to be one size smaller than the largest connected drainage pipe but not less than 1-1/4 inches in size, or can be sized in accordance with the manufacturer’s recommendations. Every vent pipe that serves an oil or grease interceptor and is located outside a building shall be not less than 3 inches in size in areas where it may be subject to frost closure. There are no standards listed in the code governing oil interceptors.

NSPC (2012)9 – Liquid waste containing grease, oil, solvents, or fl ammable liquids shall be removed by an appropriate separator. Sand and oil separators shall be provided wherever fl oors, pits or surface areas subject to accumulation of grease or oil from service or repair operations are drained or washed into the drainage system, such as car or truck washing facilities, engine cleaning facilities and similar operations. Drains are only required in a parking garage if the facility has provisions for either washing vehicles or rinsing the fl oor, and they must be routed through a sand and oil separator. Where oil separators are required in garages and service stations, they shall be sized based on the square footage of the area drained. Oil separators in other applications shall be sized according to the manufacturers rated fl ow.

MODEL PLUMBING CODES

Illinois Plumbing Code (2005)10 – Commercial vehicle repair garages, gasoline stations with grease racks or pits and oil change facilities shall be provided with fl oor drains or trench drains connected to a gas and oil interceptor.
