Cast the MassesTeera Dhanamun Portfolio

For the last several years that I have been practicing in architecture field, from academic practice in school of architecture, design in the architecture studio, management work as client representation, through construction site supervision. These all can give me the overall view of architecture in both of social, scientific and artistic term, which we as an architect have to deal with all these complexity and diversity context and deliver the result as architecture. ‘Cast The Masses’ is named after I have finished my portfolio after ten years of exploration in architectural field, from academic to professional and back to academic again. Cast in this sense may refer to the design process before the result came out as the masses, the masses of building, the masses of study model, throughout the masses as the public. Those in the end accomplish and generate the further development after our design process and our architecture.

I start my academic training from the small scale of masses as the Interior Architecture. During bachelor study I can learn the way to cast and create the relationship between architecture and users, from furniture design up to the scale of building design. Then in professional practice I also start from small scale of products, exhibition and interior design at IJ Siam. After almost a year at IJ Siam I had an opportunity to join research and design architectural firm in Thailand, Prophet Archtekton. This is the place where I aroused and feel enthusiastic to work in broader and extensive scale, I begin to learn to deal with complexity in context and relationship between the big masses of architecture and masses of public. Another offer was arrive in 2006; I made a move to learn another side of the business by joining the PDC Engineering. The project management and site supervision let me to learn from both side, the owner or the client and the architect or designer, in which broader my vision about overview of the whole process. And in 2008 I have decide to go back to academic practice again at Delft University of Technology in The Netherlands, where architectural education is strongly oriented towards the simulation of theoretical, research together with professional practice and specialize in the field of public space from urban scale to the public building. And then I start to experience more international field with the work at Studio Arne Quinze in Brussels, Belgium and Dorsch Gruppe, Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates.

After several years of gaining experiences in various field of both academic and professional works. Moving back to architectural practice in design process is my aim, to cast from the conceptual and design development process to be the masses of architecture that begin to communicate and arouse the relationship with another masses of the public.

MSc 1 : Public Realm, Casablaca Mediatheque

The program of the Médiathèque epitomizes the coexistence of two different layers of the public realm: a layer of traditional urban public space and a more recent layer represented by developments as the worldwide web. It raises questions as: what is the meaning of architecture in relation to a public realm that is composed of squares and streets, as well as of virtual fora and chat rooms? Which architectural typology corresponds to the program of the Médiathèque? Does the enticement of several layers of the public realm offer new possibilities for centrality within the city and thus for new public buildings? This studio is in collaboration with the Schools of Architecture in Casablanca and Rabat (Morocco). With the growing internationalization of architectural practice architects are increasingly working in a condition of ‘displacement’. This studio wants to investigate which tools, instruments and approaches architects have available to operate within a cultural condition that is not their own.

2008 - 2010 Master student at Delft University of Technology, Delft, The Netherlands

While being in various fields of professional work for 5 years, I decide to go back to academic field and Europe was the best destination to explore in architectural field from history, theory, through technology.

MSc 2 : The Why Factory, Death of leisure city

MVRDV together with Delft University of Technology runs a new think tank: The Why Factory. The course wants to give argumentation back to the architectural and urbanistic world. and concentrates on the production of models and visualizations for future cities. This studio focuses on research and theorization on how to make new cities. It researches possible directions of our urban futures in the theme of ‘Death of leisure city’.

Together with the collaborators that look into leisure from political, economic, social and cultural perspective. The research will process various data and informa-tion in order to embrace the whole world of leisure and pinpoint it’s urban implications. Furthermore, it will make hypothesis on how leisure should become a creative force for our cities.

MSc 3 and 4 : Public Realm, Urban redevelopment in relation to public realm of Rotterdam

Within the theme of context and modernity in the 21st century the studio will focus on ‘public building’ in the Netherlands. The research and design studio of Public Realm Rotterdam will explore the meaning of public realm in architecture, explore the meaning of public realm in the light of current urban redevelop-ments in the city centre ofRotterdam. The city municipality has just launched a competition for the site of the former ‘Stadskantoor’. The site islocated behind the Rotterdam town hall on the Coolsingel that dates from the thirties. The site is an existing urban block in the city. The characteristic L-shaped part of the block dating from the 1950 has to be preserved. Later additions will be demolished.

There is a competition program provided, but the studio will be invited to develop different programs based on through research and own insights. In potential, the site can house offices, dwellings and shops and also social-cultural facilities. Mixed programmes and new strategies have to be developed to meet the social, cultural, political and economic problems and needs of the Rotterdam city centre in the 21st century. Such strategies can involve themes such as a public realm for a diversity of city inhabitants . Theory and practice together form the ground on which the discourse of studio Public Realm is founded. [DIS]CONTINUITY: interventions of historical RotterdamStadskantoor Rotterdam

Location: Rotterdam, The NetherlandsStage: Graduation Project, Public Realm Studio Design Period: 2009-2010Area: 33,890 sq.m.Programme: Hybrid building of city offices, city shops, forum, commercial, exposition hall, atelier, hotel and popstage

The studio is aimed to exploring the meaning in the light of current urban redevelopments in city center of Rotterdam. The site of former ‘Stadskantoor’ that was just announce to be a competition from city municipality in early 2009.

Site islocated in transition area between commercial and residential context and surrounded by historical building, City Hall, Post office and L-shape building from 1950’s that has to be preserve.

The goal is to create urban redevelopment in relation to public realm with new programmes and strategies.

The Group research on urban scenario theme is ‘The Revival of Historic Rotterdam’, focus on how to using the historical assets to improve city center towards the future. Principle and secondary area were selected to improve in the city center area to develop and connect to the historical assets from the research.

(This graduation project was nominated from TU Delft to entry the Netherlands 2011 Archiprix competition)

Published in Archiprix 2011 Book

During MSc3, the group research and individual essay were executed. The range of research various from small scale, Public-Private-Collective space in relation to condensed and mixed building typologies, and large scale to create the urban scenario and master plan as a whole group. And the con-clusion came out as the published booklet in the theme of ‘Rotterdam City4’.

Urban Scenario theme is ‘The Revival of Historic Rotterdam’, focus on how to using the historical as-sets to improve city center towards the future.

Urban morphology, start by mapping of water and urban area during 17th to 19th century which shown that the city center area is always have high density of residential and commercial in the city center area according to the fact that it was port city and lots of worker live in city center.

Circulation in the building slow vs fast

The building is not a solid form to exist in the site that surrounded by solid mass of historical building consider the building and programs as an organism that is not autonomous and can be flow at various speed artificial and

natural urbanlandscape that connect together.

If the architecture can only be exist as an relationship, then ‘How can the relationship to be design?’

slow/fast enter/leaving inside/outside showing/erasing

The relationship between human body and environment that can mediate by architecture.

01 considert the existing and the new buidling as a whole mass

02 carving out the mass to con-nect atrium with outdoor square

03 erasing architecture

04 two core connect the 2 wing of existing building together

05 free stading platform attached to the core

06 creat the mass to host the exposition hall

01 filled up with the mass

02 carving out the main circulation and plinth

03 carving out the atrium

04 lift up horizontal skyscrapper

05 part that pick up to develop

06 new square at stadtshaus straat

While the whole city-centre of Rotterdam seems to be build up out of long linear connections (visual and physical),with a lot of overview and without obstructions or suprises, our site seems to be the exception. Instead of demolishing parts of obstructing buildings, an guiding circulation of connection points is created, based on programmatic attractors.

Master plan concept = Embracing of different functions

Point of departure and design concepttemporarity and flexibility

speed and image of public space

mixing arrangement programmes

Main color the space is grey scale that define the space by different degree of transparent and translucent.

Secondary color of the space is the color of furniture or kiosk in flexible space that can lead the user to the space

Interior space and material can represent the flexibility in space like in the main atrium, creative market and interactive library, also the finishing of the floor like carpet can be in graphic or some color depend on the function of the space

And the within this relationship between different degree of transparent and translucent,

people who generate the activities inside this space will be the last part of the color

that can fill up this space and change all the time

Flexibility of semi-outdoor square that connect to the entrance from Meent side ‘play’ between building, urban context and public

Different degree of transparent and translucent continue from the core and the edge, from exterior to interior and also represent the hierarchy between the existing and the new building and the building with the site context

Play Rotterdam, the interaction between the people and the city that mediated by the architecture, the flexibility in space planning and materializtion that can arouse the people to ‘play’

with the architecture and the city.

Measure LeisureThe Why Factory, MSc2 Research and Design project

Location: All around the worldStage: MSc2 projectDesign Period: 2009Area: - sq.m.Programme: Research and design explore in the theme of ‘Death of leisure city’

Within the theme of ‘Death of leisure city’, I have the fascination in the number of consumption in the leisure city and how to make it more efficency that become the point of departure for my research and develop into design strategy later on in the concept of ‘Measure Leisure’.

Conclusion from the first part of research can brieftly describe that all the facilities that provide for leisure nowadays was overestimate, that may lead to the ‘Death of Leisure City’ situation. The point of departure for design section is how to make more efficient leisure from the number of exisitng facilities.

Compress leisure strategy for weekend in the first 3 years, according to research the leisure city will devide into 3 types of density with the fuction that suitable for each density.

This type of leisure city will locared along the coastline with different type of infrastructure that can transport all the people from the working city or the mainland.

Decompress leisure strategy for the fourth year will be based on the theme of ‘Leisure Olympic’ that each city will have to nominate for the selection to be the host every 4 years same as the Olympic.

Then the case study explore on when The Netherlands make a nomination toqualified to be the host of Leisure Olympic.

The situation is otherway around when Dubia make a proposal for ‘leisure olympic’ with 851 manmade island of The World and The Palm to host the Leisure Olympic.

As conclusion from the research, grid system was created to respond to the complexity and diversity in the context.

From square grid and flexible grid, to the 9m.x9m. diamond shape grid with flexible joint in angle that fit in the design development of programing from urban context, landscape, through the building.

The program of the Médiathèque combined with the diversity in city of Casablanca and the site context that located in between the 3 different characteristic of the Casablanca, ( The medina; traditional ancient islamic city, European town; the development from French urbanist during the colonization and the New European city; the office area from the late 20th century. Together with marina city to replace the port area and the new train and metro station in future development.)

Streaming media concept: Building facilities the flowing-through of a broad audience. It introduces the public to media on diffent scale levels.

The results of grid system that can flow the stream of public to the stream of media by the mediate of pavilion in the landscape to the mediatheque building.

MicropolisThe Why Factory workshop at ANCB Berlin

Location: BerlinStage: 1 week group workshopDesign Period: 2009Area: - sq.m.Programme: Research and design explore in the theme of ‘2059 50 years after crisis’

The financial crisis of 2008 found governments unable to control their econ-omies, leading to the collapse of the macro credit and rating systems. Micro credits were already in existence, but it was not until the failure of macro credits that they took control of the financial world. Importantly, micro credits were given mostly to women due to their proven interest in long-term profit.Women were now in charge of the economy and society therein. One of their major changes was the replacement of democracy with micro-democracy, introducing economic measures which, especially after 2025, helped the world to recover from the crisis.

Every form of power in the city was deconstructed: big business and administration districts were distributed throughout the urban net, thereby improving accessibility and visibly reducing building scale. Central and suburban areas were abolished. The city was transformed into a multi-center net, with the same provisions everywhere, without cars and easily accessible by foot. Diversity enlivened every area making it safer, more efficient and active 24 hours per day.

The project was the development proposal to Municipality of Abu Dhabi to develop the Corniche Road, the 4 km. main beach drive in Abu Dhabi. The program of development is to activate the beach space that was isolate from the CBD.

By emphasizing walking as a viable mode of transportation with a strong impact on health is leading towards a more sustainable city where energy consumption and focus on a lively city - also at night- are part of the new city strategies.

Walking sets eyes on the streets, it enhances public life and increases the local ownership and knowledge of the city. “There is more to walking than walking”: Walking is the first step – making invitations to stop, to linger, to talk, to watch, to participate and to perform are the others.

Due to the close proximity of the three sites to the main arterial highway, our proposal sets out to screen those areas which will be most sensitive to the noise and air pollution

generated by the highway. In order to achieve this, we have located the single and double person units on the site closest to the highway and arranging these units in a G+Two

storey configuration to create a significant barrier. The building is however cranked and recedes into the plot to reveal the Mosque, and will not present a challenge to it’s

prominence.

We have retained a similar approach and have zoned the various accommodation types, allocating the mid-sized Three Bedroom family apartments in a similar three storied block

to the Southwest furthest away from the main highway. These family orientated apart-ments will enjoy a more quiet and more peaceful environment along with the Four Bed-room apartments which are naturally protected as they nestle into the hillside, protected

by the steep rugged slopes which also form a backdrop to these two storied buildings. Communal facilities are intended solely for the use by residents which are located cen-

trally and within the larger plot. They are combined with a limited commercial provision of coffee shops line shops, cash point and a small Supermarket which surround, and open

onto, a covered roof lit courtyard.

Interior Perspective

The architectural composition reflects and develops the Master Planning. The Four/ Three Bedroom Cluster is designed to re-

semble a low rise villa complex in appearance enjoying an elegance and privacy of space suitable for the Senior Officer level. The

One and Two Bedroom apartment block requires less privacy but enjoys more immediate access to the retail and recreational facili-ties, these are given a more dynamic façade treatment consistent with the Junior Officer level which is expected to occupy them.

The large mass of the One and Two Bedroom apartment is broken down by means of terraces balconies and roof gardens creating open courtyard spaces which allow diffuse natural daylight to

penetrate deep into the lower levels.

The entrance of each unit will be connected with the open courtyard space which acts as a semi-private communal area for

interaction between residents and are softened with planting pos-sible by virtue of the natural light and ventilation. The traditional and contemporary Omani and Arabic architectural elements were carefully applied to the project from the early planning stages to

create the architectural language which is a modern interpretation of traditional features.

Six European countries will be represented by "The Heart of Europe", each one incorporating its essential characteristics in a modern architectural interpretation. Moving away from a "theme park" concept, each part will carry through a contemporary architectural language, the spirit of the country it represents, here for Germany.

Always linked by the unifying architectural values typical of new urbanism, the island will also bring its own interpretation on the country it represents.

A resort community with a sense of luxury, the project is to set high standards for efficient design. The use of passive means of climate control such as building orientation, shade structures, vegetation, breeze ways, operable facades, covered links and the use of appropriate environmentally sensitive materials will reduce energy consumption.

By an important multifunctional program, the reactivation of existing buildings, plazas and a composition of newly built volumes, the SAQ proposal is a total concept that has the ambition to anchor the complex back in the surrounding urban tissue.

Through a series of strategic and generous cuts accompanied by public facilities, the long-lost urban continuity of the site is restored. Access to the site becomes part of

an urban promenade, a passage of activities.

Place Vandome Swatch Concept Store

Location: Paris, FranceStage: Design CompetitionDesign Period: 2010Area: 200 sq.m.Programme: Interior

It is in embracing the unicity of its location that this Boutique can appropriate itself to be more than merely another retail store of the Swatch group. In this sense, the clientele visiting this boutique need to have lived an intriguing experience, not only through the appreciation of a sophisticated architectural language but also by the quality of service and reception, the innovative use of new media, and the surprising ‘mise en scène’ in the act of purchasing.

Acting as such, a Swatch product bought Place Vendome stands out of an identical acquisition on another site.

How can a Swatch store on Place Vendome stand out? Although distinct in their connotation, these two established names could combine to form a coherent and captivating ensemble.

Front and Reception Space

Next to highlighting the relation that Swatch holds with the pillars of art and fashion, the typology and local context of this boutique also required a distinct retail approach based on two supplementary themes: exclusivity and innovation.

The space dimensions lead inevitably to the question of finding a correct balance between product exposure and overall atmosphere. This is why, at first glance, a limited amount of watches are exposed for a close and easy interaction.

In this proposition, a great importance is attached to the packaging of the products. As such, a Swatch product bought on Place Vendome acquires uniqueness. Through the use of the latest technological possibilities, the act of preselecting a range of products of interest can be totally reinterpreted. Indeed, implementing tactile surface technology inside a sales point is not only a perfect alternative for display limitations, but opens up new and enlarged perspectives in bringing the products towards the clientele.

A step further in the use of this technology would be the possibility to customize the product at will (color, material, graphic) and purchase a singular and personal design.

Place Du Justice Competition

Location: Brussels, BelgiumStage: Design CompetitionDesign Period: 2010Area: - Programme: Idea Competition Overall view Mapping of the Project

The Brussels Courthouse was built between 1866 and 1883 by architect Poelaert and is the most largest building erected in the West in the 19th century. The Brussels Courthouse has a total developed section of 26,006 square metres (compared to 22,000 square metres for St. Peter's Basilica in Rome) and was designed to be an impressive symbol of the power of justice in Belgium.

Inspired by the classical Greek Roman style, it includes 27 major courtrooms, 245 smaller ones and one magnificent Hall of Lost Steps overhung by an imposing dome culminating at 142 metres above ground-level.

This building, which towers above the lower part of the city and the Marolles district, is regarded in most aspects as a symbol in Brussels, in part due to the impression it left in the collective memory of citizens who were displaced as a result of its construction on the one hand and to the legends which arose from the gigantic size of this place and from the extraordinary mass of this building on the other hand.

As one of the key elements of Brussels’ urban landscape, which can be seen from almost everywhere, this building is, however, hard to secure and complex tomodernize.

The solution we proposed is to bring the idea of mapping the possibility if situations or scence that can happen to the site of Brussels Courthouse both in the approach of local and global term to represent the idea of Brussels as the capital of Belgium and Capital of EU.
