Installation of a central pipe in thepreheater cyclones is essential for theoverall performance of the preheater.Delivering both improved separationand thermal efficiency, the FLSmidthcentral pipe saves fuel and decreasespower consumed on the ID fan drive,as the preheater gas temperature isreduced. By installing one cast centralpipe in the lower cyclone stages, thetypical fuel savings are between 5-10 kcal/kg clinker and the power consumption savings on the ID fan drive are between 4-8%.

Whether reductions in fuel and powerconsumption are converted into savings or increased production of typically 1-2%, the central pipe provides a fast return on investment.

Patented suspension systemincreases lifetimeA patented system for thesuspension of the cast central pipeconsiderably increases the pipe’slifetime. Corrosion is reduced as aresult of limited heat conductionacross the free-floating suspensionsystem, thereby reducing condensa-tion of salts that can corrode the heatresistant metal suspension. The system also offers easy handling of replacement elements,thus minimising downtime. Thanks to FLSmidth process knowhow and material technology, the elements have been optimised to provide the market’s best wear and corrosive resistance for temperatures up to 1100 °C.

Customized design - for improved performance

Fast, easy installationThe cast central pipe’s modular designfits into any size of cyclone design –both new and existing cyclones,regardless of manufacture. The new cast central pipe is very easyto install since only one type of element is used to form any diameter.

The downtime required for installation is short, and no special tools or lifting equipment are required. Low mainte-nance and service requirements also contribute to its long-lasting, reliable design. The free-floating design is a result of ongoing research and development, combined with the years of practical experience gained from installing more than 1,200 cast central pipes worldwide.

Increased wear resistance by customized designFLSmidth has designed a 25mm element to improve the performance of the free-floating cast central pipe in the lower stages of the preheater. The 25mm elements can be combined with 15mm elements, which makes it possible to tailor the cast central pipe according to mechanical and chemical influences during operation.

Erosive wear affects the entire cast central pipe, but the wear can be higher in some areas than others. To prevent mechanical wear caused by quarts particles or other hard and erosive particles, the 25mm element can be used to upgrade the entire cast central pipe or only parts of it.By increasing the thickness of the element from 15 to 25mm, the complete free-floating cast central pipe is more resilient and has a longer service life.
