    The Indian Subcontinent is the worstcyclone-affected part of the world, asa result of low-depth of the Oceanbed and the way our coast is shaped.

    India has got a coast line of about 7200 kms

    The Indian Ocean is one of the sixmajor cyclone prone regions of theworld.

    The destruction, during recent decades,ofcoastal forests removed a barrierwhich formerly mitigated the effects of

    waves and wind from cyclonic storms.Although much of the forest removal maymade ways for a fast-growing globalbusiness.

    Poverty also contributes to the cause of the cyclone. Thestandard of protection (such as housing and infrastructure)

    in an inappropriate way for a region subject to frequent intense

    cyclones. And for poor people, without savings or insurance,

    total loss turns a disaster into a catastrophe.

    The lack of preparation by the localauthorities at cyclone prone regionscannot be considered inevitableeither.

    The manifestation of humanity's

    overloading the earth's ecology due toglobal warming is a reality that cannot beneglected. The human effect on the climateis the major factor leading to cyclone.

    Present conjunction of worldwide over-consumption, pollution, and wideninginequality is another factor.

    The unjust and dysfunctional globalconditions which are causative for several

    factors, add to the scale of cyclone disaster.

    Human ecological impacts areof various kinds like :

    use of land

    use of water

    effects on biodiversity

    use of non-renewable resources

    production of greenhouse gases

    production of other unacceptable

    pollutants

    Managing Cyclones

    Managing any disaster requires at the outset, a cleardefinition of the Role to be played by every

    individual in a community

    Community Contingency plan is a list of activities avillage decides to follow, to prevent loss of life,

    livelihood and property in case of emergency.

    It also identifies in advance, actions to be taken byindividuals in the community so that each one is

    aware of specific responsibility when an emergency

    warning is received

    You have an important role increating awareness and disseminating

    information

    IN THE CYCLONE SEASONSListen Radio or T.V Weather reports and in

    case of Cyclone warning, ensure that every one

    is alerted.This is usually done through loudspeaker or by

    going from house to house

    Identify safe shelters in your area, and the closest

    and safe route to reach them

    CONDUCT MOCK DRILLS FOR YOURSELVES,

    IMAGINING THAT A WARNING HAS BEEN GIVEN

    KEEP A LIST OF EMERGENCY ADDRESSES

    AND PHONE NUMBERS

    KEEP YOUR IMPOTANT PAPERS IN THE

    EMERGENCY KIT

    LISTEN YOUR LOCAL RADIO FOR

    INFORMATION

    WEAR WARM CLOTHING FOR PROTECTION

    KEEP FOOD ITEMS IN WATER PROOF BAGS.

    CLOSE ALL WINDOWS AND DOARS

    Avoid places with wide-span roofsmade of Tin sheets or asbestos sheetssuch as hall

    Switch of Main and disconnect all electricalappliances

    Do not spread rumours.

    Go to a pre decided safe location

    If you are in the open, You may lie down

    flat with your face towards the ground

    and cover your ear with your palms.Close your eyes, shut your mouth and

    stay still in the same position till the

    cyclone passes.

    Never try to go to out side in a car,during Cyclone. The Cyclone can changedirection quickly and can lift up a car

    BEFORE USE

    BE CAREFUL OF SNAKEBITES

    DO NOT ENTER FLOOD WATERS

    BEWARE OF FALLEN POWER LINES, DAMAGED

    BRIDGESAND TREES

    Drink only safe water
