A Pirate’s Life for MeBook by Craig Solano & Music and Lyrics by Bill Francoeur

Aristocrat Roger Goodman has his heart set on a conventional life married to the wealthy Sarah Huffington and living happily ever after. That is, until he finds out she thinks he’s boring and would rather marry a brave and adventurous pirate! Determined to prove himself to his beloved, Roger hires Long John Sliver to tutor him and his newly recruited motley crew in the field of piracy. Meanwhile, Sarah knows there’s only one way to win the affections of a true pirate. She dubs herself the Pirate Queen and sets sail with her own crew of lady pirates. With messages in bottles that spread rumours faster than email, Captain Blood and the Pirate Queen learn of each other’s formidable reputations, not knowing, of course, each other’s true identity. When Sarah gets the message that Captain Blood is holding her parents captive on Treasure Island, you can guess where the lady pirates are headed next! But Bluebeard, a true pirate now retired and desiring nothing more than a chance to enjoy lounging in his beach chair, already occupies the island and is “livin’ the good life” with his crew.

Session I 9:00 am - noon

Part 1 The Baroque Era

Every pedagogical system in the world requires students to study Baroque music from the earliest grades onward. There has to be a reason other than “Bach is a great composer...”

Part 2 Fundamentals of Tone Production

This session explores an understanding of an area that is critical to guiding students through junior, intermediate and senior piano study. Particular emphasis will be placed on an understanding of:

• Arm weight• Weight transferal• Wrist at impact (when the hammer hits the string)• Importance (and technique) of legato playing• Arm extension

Session II 1:00 - 4:00 pm

Part 1 Excellence in Teaching: Nurturing a Passion

The quest for excellence in piano pedagogy requires that we open our minds and hearts to new techniques and approaches as we constantly search for ways to inspire and motivate our students. Dr. Janet Lopinski will share ideas and strategies using both traditional and innovative approaches to engage the mind, body and soul and discover the artist within each of our pupils.

Part 2 Chopin: The Muses who Inspired the Master

The music of Fryderyk Chopin is central to the repertoire of virtually every pianist. In this informative and engaging session, Janet Lopinski will present portraits of the women who were sources of inspiration for Chopin at different times in his life: Konstancja Gladkowska, the Polish soprano who the young Chopin worshiped from afar; Maria Wodzinska, whose letters he tied in a bundle and labelled “my woe” after their relationship was terminated; Delfina Potocka, the beautiful and elusive countess to whom Chopin dedicated several compositions; and George Sand who Chopin described as “repulsive” after their first meeting, and who became his mistress and muse for a decade of his short life. The presentation will include performances of selected works from the Intermediate and Early Advanced teaching repertoire inspired by the muses.

Seminars

What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body by Dr. Lana Henchell

Lana Henchell will discuss how the body works while playing the piano and will address injury prevention for repetitive tasks. Playing effortlessly, freely, and more expressively is the goal of every pianist; therefore, knowledge of balance, support and weight will help pianists achieve technical freedom. Demonstrations and student participation of various exercises will help illustrate that playing the piano can, and should be, a natural and effortless endeavor. The book, “What Every Pianist Needs to Know About the Body” by Thomas Mark will be the main focus of the seminar.

Expectations of Piano Camp: Why Perform? by Gabriella Jonas

Gabriella Jonas will talk about overcoming “fear of performance.” She will address why piano performance is important and how the process can positively influence other aspects of our lives. She will also talk about why and how it is that Camp participants have phenomenal results—through a great variety of hands on classes with knowledgeable instructors...and each instructor with their own special approach to music.

The Evolution of Haydn’s Sonata Form by Edwin Gnandt

Franz Joseph Haydn would be considered by many to be the father of the Keyboard Sonata Form as it is known today. It is estimated the Haydn composed over 52 sonatas for solo keyboard. Mr. Gnandt will discuss the evolution of Haydn’s Sonata Form and demonstrate selected works to show their influence upon future composers in the piano world.

Be Your Own Teacher (I Love Practising!) by Joseph Fridman

While learning a piece do you ever hit a “wall” of not knowing what to do next? Do you sometimes feel “empty,” even tired of the music you have been learning for a while and wonder how to make the music sound alive and engaging? In this seminar, we will explore the effective, “holistic” methods of practising that lead to an artistic performance. You will overcome musical plateaus by asking a series of questions directed to yourself, to the piece, and to your imagined audience! How do you learn to listen to and hear important musical events within a piece? How do you turn “difficult” into “simple” and become inspired to work on piano technique?

These questions will be addressed, and more... Learn to activate your ear and mind, and become your own teacher!

Registration $395 before July 1 ($356 for families of 3+ or multiple camps*)

$485 after July 1 ($437 for families of 3+ or multiple camps*)
