Issue 9, Term 2, 17 June 2016

PBL: BE SAFE

Cross the road at designated

pedestrian crossings.

Principal Report - Mr Schneider

Welcome to our final newsletter for Term 2,

2016. Success, celebration and engagement

are perhaps the best words to describe this

term and our newsletters really highlight the

breadth of our students’ endeavours at

school.

Teachers are busy completing Half Yearly

Reports for all students from Year 7 to Year 11.

There will be a Parent/Teacher evening on

Monday 25 July which is the start of the

second week next term from 3.30pm to

6.30pm for all students Years 7 to 12. I

encourage all parents and carers to keep the

date free and take the opportunity to discuss

the progress of your child with their teachers.

The Year 11 Academic Awards Assembly will

be held in the last week of term on Monday

27 June at 12.15pm whilst Years 7 and 9 and

Years 8 and 10 Assemblies will occur on

Thursday 28 July and Friday 29 July

respectively.

All parents/carers and community members

are invited to attend our NAIDOC

celebrations next Tuesday 21 June.

I would like to thank all the parents and

carers who have supported the school

uniform policy. I realise that at times for a

variety of reasons students are out of uniform

but I remind parents/carers to provide a note

and that tights are not acceptable at school.

Individually We Achieve, Together We Excel

NAIDOC Celebrations will be held on Tuesday,

21 June. We would love to see as many

people as possible join with us to celebrate this

culturally significant day. There will be a

Morning Tea with Staff at 11am in the

Common Room.

The NAIDOC Assembly will begin at 12.15pm. Lunch is at 1pm and the sporting activities begin

at 1.50pm. Students and staff are encouraged to wear red/yellow/black as part of the day.

YEAR 10 students are involved in their Year 11 Subject Selection Interviews today, This is a highly

significant time for these students as they embark on their journey into the senior years. We

thank all parents/carers who have been part of this process. The Staff at Casino High School are

committed to ensuring that the students are well supported in their subject selections.

PARENT/TEACHER INTERVIEWS. All parents/carers of students in years 7 to 12 are asked to please

put Monday, 25 July in their diaries as Parent/Teacher interviews will be held from 3:30pm to

6:30pm in the Len Walsh Hall. This is an excellent opportunity for you to meet with your students’

teachers to discuss their progress and way forward. We look forward to meeting with you then.

THE NEED TO WEAR A UNIFORM. Casino High School is a uniform school and we seek the support

of all parents/carers to ensure that all students are in uniform particularly as the cold weather

sets in. Students are reminded that girls are not to wear tights. Our Uniform Shop is opened on

Tuesday 11am to 2pm and Friday 8.30am to 11.30am.

As the end of Term 2 draws near it is important that students maintain their focus on their

learning. Too often they become distracted by the dramas that are occurring outside of school.

Students need to remember that their priority is to receive results of which they, and their

families, can be proud.

NEWSLETTER AND BULLETIN DISTRIBUTION

Our newsletter and bulletin are published every Friday, week about and uploaded onto our

website: www.casino-h.schools.nsw.edu.au and also to the skoolbag app.

The newsletters and bulletins are emailed to parents who have provided their email addresses.

We do not provide paper copies unless specifically requested by parents or carers. No

hardcopies of the newsletter will be printed in the future unless requested.

SICK AND INJURED STUDENTS - A REMINDER TO STUDENTS/PARENTS/CARERS

Sick girls are to report to the Supervisor of Female Students – Ms Flick. Sick boys are to report to

the Boys’ Supervisor, Mr Schneider If possible the parents/carers will be contacted so that the

student can be taken home. Students who are obviously ill in the morning, should not be sent to

school as we do not have any nursing facilities. The school does not provide first aid for injuries

or accidents that have occurred off school grounds. Students when sick are asked to get a

note from their Class Teacher to see either Ms Flick or Mr Schneider who will then arrange

admission to sick bay and parents/carers will be contacted by the school office. In the case of

serious injury an Ambulance will be called. Students are not to call parents/carers directly.

Year 12 History Excursion

On Tuesday, 7th June, twelve Modern and Ancient History Year 12 students, Mr Jarrod Carter

and Mrs Kate Gooley set out on an adventure to Sydney. Their first stop after arriving in Sydney

after a twelve hour train ride was at the Jewish Museum. Here students learnt more about World

War II and the holocaust with the testimony from a holocaust survivor.

Students, for the following two days, spent their time at the HTANSW History HSC Study Days.

These days were filled with lectures by experts about HSC History Topics and tips about how to

achieve the best result in the HSC. While in Sydney the Vivid Festival was happening. Students

got to check out the stunning light up of the Opera House and the Sydney Harbour Bridge from

Circular Quay. This is the second year this excursion has run for senior history students and we

look forward to its continuation in the future.

Archaeology Cake

In Year 11 Ancient History, students have been learning about the science and methodology of

archaeology. To put their learning to practice they spent a lesson digging artefacts out of a

cake. They explored the three layers of chocolate, vanilla and strawberry and found treasures

such as jewels, swords and even a body. After the digging they had to predict what had

happened in the different layers of the cake, and lastly they were able to enjoy the delicious

cake baked by their teacher Mrs Kate Gooley.

HEYWIRE - Turtle Diving by Trent McGrady

I turtle dive. I can hear you asking “What?”

What does turtle diving mean? Well it is exactly that - dive into the

water and catch a turtle.

The Rocky River is situated in Tabulam, in Northern New South Wales.

The Rocky River eventually meets the mighty Clarence River. This is

where I go for holidays to visit my grandparents on my dad’s side.

Dad takes us up the river for about an hour to a place called Long

Gully. This is the best place to catch turtles. The water is very clean

and that means the turtles are clean as well. The turtles have to be

clean because I am going to eat them, so is my family.

I dive into the water and swim down to the bottom of the river. I use

goggles to see the turtles. When I see a turtle I grab it by the shell or

the neck. Sometimes they scratch or bite.

I only take a few at a time. Only what I can eat. If we are really

hungry we sometimes cook the turtle, Binging - this is the Bundjalung

name for turtle… on the riverside.

I cook turtles in the oven for about one or two hours. One turtle is not

enough for one person; you need five or six turtles to feed one person.

I think turtles are the best eating, with no sauces, just a little bit of salt.

There are not only turtles in the Rocky River. When I am diving I also

see different kinds of fish such as eels, catfish, cods, perch and mullet.

I was taught diving for turtles by my father and my uncles when I was

little. When I go to Tabulam for holidays and visit my family, I learn the

old ways to get food. There is a real art to it and a lot to learn.

Year 10 Work Experience Work experience provided a general introduction to the ‘world of work’ for 49 keen students.

They observed a variety of work, usually in a field of their choice, and undertook supervised tasks

appropriate to their skill level.

The student’s experience will build on their career planning and transition activities experienced

this term and can assist their course and subject choices in senior school. The students received

encouraging and positive comments and will be able to use their Employer evaluations and their

Work Investigation books to add to their resumes. www.chscareers.com.au
