Teletrac is a fleet management software and services firm based in southern California. Its nearly 20,000 customers use teletrac software to manage close to 250,000 vehicles including trucks, vans and buses.

Teletrac customers include long-haul truckers who transport cargo over state, national and international lines, as well as companies with metro fleets for transportation and service delivery.

With better insight to the location and well being of their vehicles and drivers, Teletrac customers have cut fuel usage by up to 30 percent, reduced driver overtime by up to 15 percent, and increased productivity by up to 12 percent.

Teletrac’s Drive app provides drivers with real-time navigation data for efficient routing, two-way messaging with dispatch, and vehicle condition reporting. It also captures vehicle performance data that enables fleets to lower costs by better understanding fuel consumption, fleet idle time, travel distance, routing details and a variety of other metrics.

Teletrac customers have cut fuel usage by up to 30 percent and increased productivity by up to 12 percent.

Several years ago, Teletrac began offering a proprietary 5-inch tablet device so that drivers/users could better manage their routes and trucks.

The device with Teletrac’s Drive software has four key functions: • The ability to two-way message with

the dispatch office on status, weather, and delivery logistics

• Get optimal routing information and turn by turn navigation

• Automatically log the amount of driving time for compliance reporting

• Complete vehicle inspection reports to ensure safe operating conditions.

The original Drive software was developed on a closed operating system platform, which made it difficult to upgrade and expand. “We recognized that in order to provide more value and flexibility to our customers, we needed to transition to an Android platform,” says Sid Nair, director of product management at Teletrac.

“Android has become the de facto standard when it comes to apps

development – it provides greater development flexibility and speed,” Nair explains. Teletrac also needed a tablet that met a high standard for performance, affordability, reliability and support. The tablet needed to have a fast processor for quicker response times. It needed excellent audio to overcome road noise. And it had to have a bright display for in-cab reading day and night.

The tablet also had to be attractively priced so that it could be economically deployed fleet-wide. Teletrac wanted a tablet made with high-quality components that would stand up to the wear of delivery truck operations. And it needed to be made by a company with a solid reputation for service and support.

“The tablet was a critical component to delivering our vision of the next generation logistics management platform,” says Nair. “So it was important to not only choose the best-in-class tablet for today, but a vendor that would bring platform and product stability for years.”

After conducting a review of several Android tablet brands, Teletrac selected the samsung Galaxy tab running Android. “We evaluated four different Android tablet vendors, and ultimately chose samsung because it met our high bar for both functional and business needs,” says Nair.

“We needed a tablet that was reliable and built with components that would stand up to the vibrations and bumps of a long-haul truck that’s on the road the majority of the time,” says Nair. “Samsung brand and reputation for quality provides Teletrac and our customers with a high degree of comfort around reliability and support.”

The tablet has a thin bezel that ensures maximum screen space in a compact form factor – important in a truck cabin. It mounts onto the dash or windshield depending on the truck configuration, and the bright screen is easy to view inside and outside the truck.

Using both the Galaxy Tab and the Teletrac software, users can two-way

message with the dispatch office on status, weather, and delivery logistics. teletrac drive automatically logs the hours of service (HOS) that a driver/operator has been driving, to help him comply with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.

The Teletrac system includes a Vehicle Location Unit (VLU), which is a small device installed in the truck and pings location and diagnostic information back to the Teletrac Cloud Services and Fleet Director Software. Unlike the previous tablet that had to be hard-wired to the VLU, the Samsung Galaxy Tab wirelessly connects to the VLU over Bluetooth, which significantly reduces installation time and cost.

Depending on customer preference, the tablet can be removed from the enclosure and used by drivers when they stop for meals or overnight rests. “Ultimately, we envision the Galaxy tablet as a productivity device that drivers will use for all kinds of tasks,” says nair.

Drivers efficiently complete vehicle inspection reports with the Galaxy Tab

tHe resultsReliable Tablet for the Long Haul

Teletrac has received positive feedback from customers deploying the Teletrac Drive app with the Samsung Galaxy tablet. Users report that it is much faster than the previous tablet. It takes them less time to download logs, access reports and receive updates on delivery routes. The larger, higher-resolution display screens render maps more clearly – even in the daytime. Messaging alerts and driving instructions are easier to hear over the road noise.

“The trucking business is highly competitive, and we are always looking for ways to improve driver productivity and satisfaction,” says Rob Koch, vice president of operations for A.N. Webber, a transportation, logistics and warehousing company in Illinois. “The Samsung tablets are easy to use and our drivers really enjoy using them. They say it makes their daily routine easier and more efficient.”

the Galaxy tab enables a.n. Webber drivers to stay connected to dispatch, get

driving directions, log any maintenance and repair issues, and track driving hours with ease and without all the paper.

Nair says Teletrac plans to take advantage of the Galaxy Tab’s mobility and Android development platform for a number of enhancements like a photo application to capture images from an accident scene and delivery e-signatures. In the future, Teletrac will enable custom programs developed by their customers while ensuring a level of device management to prevent the use of non-approved applications.

“The Samsung Galaxy Tab and Android platform gives us the ability to add more value to our customers through our own apps and theirs,” says Nair. “We can give them the functions and services they need while at the same time restricting access to applications that shouldn’t be used on the road, like texting or watching videos while driving. This platform sets the stage for even more growth and advancements in the coming years.”
