CAREERS WEEKGETTING STARTEDWelcome to the Careers Week for Technical Students – an activity for you – a student studying Science, Engineering, IT, Pharmacy or Architecture!

This event is the brainchild of John Gabarretta and Thomas Farrugia, president and national secretary of S-Cubed and IAESTE Malta respectively dating back to late 2011. The idea arose from what we felt was a lack of awareness of the career opportunities available to students upon graduation, many of which find themselves working tirelessly to get through their course, graduate and then find themselves asking the question “Now what?” right after they’ve finished. This event aims to answer this big question.

For this purpose, a subcommittee, consisting of two executive members from S-Cubed, Jonathan Schembri and Michael Buhagiar, together with two executive members from IAESTE Malta, Aaron Brincat and Norbert Bonnici, was set up in December to start working on the project. Work has pretty much been non-stop from the word ‘Go’ even throughout the exam period. The aim was to deliver a number of interesting and varied talks about different aspects relating to a career, such as a careers away from our shores, taking up entrepeneurship, or perhaps even a non-conventional career such as science writing, policy and more that as students we aren’t normally aware of.

Several industrial site visits have also been organized. However the bulk of the effort was put into organizing the company contact session - which will be held on Wednesday 29th February, and will see representatives from around 25 different companies coming to the KSU common room, to inform you about their company, what they do and how they do it, and how you can blast your career off by working with them.

IAESTE Malta have also agreed to hold their annual Wine Night within this event so as to further strengthen its credentials. The Wine Night is an annual networking session, where the same company representatives (and more) will be available to chat over a good glass of wine, kindly sponsored by Farsons Direct, along with some nibbles.

In the hope of establishing this initiative as an annual event, we sought to expand this event beyond our own subcommittee in order to effectively target as many students as possible - roping in UESA, ICTSA, MPSA and SACES who are organizing a few of their own activities within the Careers week itself, whilst also lending a helping hand.

From here we would like to extend our thanks to Malcolm Zammit (UESA), Tamara Caligari (ICTSA), Annalise Attard and Maria Galea (MPSA), and Justin Zarb and Luke Lapira (SACES), for their help in realizing this event.

Regards,

MICHAEL BUHAGIARCAREERS WEEK SUBCOMMITTEE

S-CUBEDTHE SCIENCE STUDENTS’ SOCIETY

The Science Students’ Society (S-Cubed) is a Faculty based student organisation which represents all students

following a course under the Faculty of Science on University, national and international levels. Its main aim

is to unite science students through educational and social activities which are organised regularly throughout the

year. S-Cubed also works to encourage the development of an environment more conducive to the advancement of science and to extend its reach outside University to

popularise science.

S-Cubed has an executive of science students from different courses within the Faculty that work voluntarily throughout the year to organise activities that will enrich

students’ experience on campus. Events are held regularly and range from weekend science seminars and site visits

to parties and outdoor activities.

Additionally, S-Cubed publishes the magazine In Touch twice yearly with science related articles written by

students and researchers. The full-colour magazine aims at communicating science through an informal language and provides the opportunity for students to share their

experiences and interests.S-Cubed also seeks to broaden its international horizons

both on an organizational level and for its students, through affiliations with esteemed science organisations

such as the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the Institute of Physics (IOP) which offer a multitude of

educational resources for undergraduates.

IAESTEINTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION FOR THE EXCHANGE OF STUDENTS FOR

TECHNICAL EXPERIENCE

IAESTE is a dynamic international non-governmental organization that coordinates the exchange of university students for work experience across a broad network of over 80 countries. Jobs are available for a period ranging from 6 weeks to one year in duration. About 10000 traineeship opportunities are exchanged yearly worldwide, mostly offering a technical work experience, but always directly related to the student’s area of study. Since 1984, IAESTE Malta has been providing job experiences to students from the University of Malta in Germany, UK, Switzerland, Austria, Italy, France, Brazil, Slovenia, Hungary and Greece with prestigious companies such as IBM, Novartis, Philips, Siemens, British Telecom, BBC, Bosch and Ericsson.

IAESTE Malta believes that a full university life is not one restricted to lecture theaters. The organization offers plenty of opportunities for participation in a broad range of activities and events, which together with the academic aspect, help bring out the best in the student. IAESTE also believes in the importance of exposure to the world of cultures and to a world without frontiers. Apart from the exchange program, active members have plenty of opportunity in participating in many international conferences and seminars all year round. Activities on and off campus are also quite common. While enjoying a work-experience abroad, a student acquires practical skills, putting into practice what s/he has learnt in class. Exchange is offered on a one to one basis, a traineeship abroad being offered to a Maltese student for each job offered by a Maltese company to a foreign student.

SACESThe Society of Architecture and Civil Engineering

Students (SACES) is a faculty-based student organisation representing architecture and civil engineering students of

the University of Malta. Set up in 1974 to defend students’ rights, today, SACES still strives to support and unite

students by giving them a voice. However, over the years it has taken on different roles within university life: It organises team-building events such as workshops,

parties and barbecues; debates and lectures by local and foreign speakers; exhibitions of students’ work and

combined activities with other student organisations.
