    You CAN make a difference

The science of biotechnology is used to alter geneticinformation in animals and plants to improve them in

    some way that benefits people.

Analysts predict that biotechnology will be one of the mostimportant applied sciences of the 21st century.

Biotechnology uses living cells and materialsproduced by cells to create pharmaceutical, diagnostic, agricultural, environmental, andother products to benefit society.

Because biotechnology uses basic ingredients of life tomake new products, it is both cutting-edge

    technology and an applied science.

    High growth scientific careers

As companies search for new products, the need for researchstaff expands. It takes 10-15 years to bring a biotech productthrough clinical trials and into the marketplace. Manycompanies formed in late 1980s and early 1990s now haveproducts that are nearing clinical and/or commercial

manufacturing. Some of the largest companies are expanding their productbase, and therefore, their manufacturing capacity. Over thenext two years, the demand for qualified manufacturing

    personnel will continue to increase.

How to pursue a biotech career Step 1

Be well-rounded in all subject areas. Although scientificknowledge is important, people entering biotechnologycareers need basic skills such as computer use, effective

written and verbal communication, and math ability. Step 2

Talk to your guidance counselor and your teachers, tell themyou are interested in learning more about careers inBiotechnology. Explore biotech careers on Mass CIS or one ofthe career exploration sites listed in this presentation.

Step 3Be familiar with state and national biotech organizations andprofessional groups. Gain experience in the industry throughinternships, co-ops, work study, and job shadowing.

If you enjoy science, math, technology, investigating,

solving problems and making useful products, a career inbiotechnology may be for you.
