1. Our August chapter meeting will be held Wednesday, August 24,

2016 at the Penbrook American Legion Post 730. Social hour will

begin at 6 PM with dinner being served at 7 PM. Speaker will follow

dinner.

2. On the dinner menu this month will be roast beef, mashed potatoes

with gravy, peas and carrots, tossed salad, ranch and Italian

dressing, rolls and butter, pie, coffee, iced tea, soft drinks and beer.

Dinner price is $12; coffee, iced tea and soft drinks are included

with the meal; donations for beer will be accepted. Suggested beer

donations are $1 per glass and $5 per pitcher.

3. It is imperative that you make your dinner reservation by calling

(717-652-1534) or e-mailing Bob Hafer [email protected]) no

later than noon on Monday, August 22, 2016. PLEASE NOTE

THIS IS A NEW RESERVATION NUMBER FOR 2016. IT IS

VITALLY IMPORTANT THAT YOU CALL BOB IF YOU PLAN ON

JOINING US FOR DINNER. WE NEED TO PROVIDE LEGION

POST 730 WITH AN ACCURATE NUMBER OF THOSE WHO

WILL BE ATTENDING. THIS IS TO ENSURE THERE IS ENOUGH

FOOD FOR ALL WHO ATTEND THE MEETING. Also, you need

to know that Post 730 will charge us for the meals we reserve.

So, it is imperative that you also let us know when you make a

reservation and find out later that you are unable to join us for

dinner. Should this happen to you and you don’t call us we will

be charged for your meal. Your cooperation is appreciated.

4. Our 50th annual induction banquet held June 11, was an

overwhelming success. An audience of 164, including 37 past

inductees, welcomed the class of 2016 into our Hall. The class is

pictured below, left to right, Andy Linker, Freddy Cassivi, Rick

Mauck, Pete Micklewright, Jessica Killinger (accepting for the late

Glenn Killinger), Gary Lowe, Pete Bowman, Bull Watson, and Ted

Knorr (accepting for the late Oscar Charleston).

5. It’s not too early to be thinking of next year’s induction. You may

give your completed nomination forms to our Chairman of the

Board, Tom Finger or to any Executive Board member.

6. A sincere tip of the helmet and a hearty CAC thank you goes out to

our June speaker. Darryl Martin was a huge hit with all who heard

him.

7. Our guest speaker for August will be Sports Fever editor and

television personality Gorden Blain. He will be pinch hitting for Gary

Collins who was originally scheduled to step to our podium.

Unfortunately, Gary is experiencing some health issues that will

prevent him from joining us. We wish Gary a speedy recovery and

hope to see him soon. In the meantime we welcome Gorden back

as our speaker. We request that all please be respective of our

speakers and do not carry on private conversations while our guest

is speaking. Please know that all of our speakers are well aware of

their allotted speaking time and no one from the audience needs to


remind them. If need be, this issue will be handled in a respectful

manner from the head table. Your cooperation is greatly

appreciated.

8. Congratulations and best wishes to our 2016 scholarship winners,

Koby Bowman and Taylah Erdman (pictured below) from Halifax

Area High School. Scholarship Chairwoman Deb Novakovich made

the 2016 scholarship presentation to these outstanding young

people at our June 22 membership meeting.

9. Chapter baseball enthusiasts along with their guests enjoyed our

return to the island and the picnic with our Harrisburg Senators. A

total of 25 folks attended the June 17 game with the Reading

Phillies. We thank Director Jim Hernjak for chairing this event.

10. Along the same lines, our annual golf outing was a huge

success. Our thanks to Director Denny Hollern for chairing this

year’s event. It was a fine afternoon of golf, fun and socializing with

good friends. You and your committee did an outstanding job.


11. The State Hall of Fame Class of 2016 was announced at the

recently held Board of Governors meeting. Congratulations to the

12. Please know that our current membership roster now stands at

446 members in good standing. We picked up 19 new members in

July thanks to our golf outing.

13. Again I remind all, please keep in mind; it is crucial that each

member keeps me attuned to their current postal and e-mail

address. We cannot deliver chapter or state ballots to you if we

cannot contact you. Some of our members neglected to give me

address changes when they moved and consequently did not

receive their ballots this year.

14. Executive Committee members – our next board meeting is

scheduled for August 17. The agenda will be sent to each member

by way of e-mail or snail mail.


15. Our hearts are heavy with sadness as we report the passing of

Bob Spangler’s (class of 2008) wife. Our prayers go out to her

family and friends during this difficult time.
