Message from the Chair

On behalf of Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame Board of Governors, I am pleased to present the 2013 Annual Report. 2013 was a successful year for Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame, with a lot of effort spent on positioning the organization for future sustainability and success. Visitor numbers to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame continued to grow with a significant increase in group visits, facility rentals, and school programs over the previous year.

We acknowledge and thank Governors Jane Hungerford, Marnie McBean and Scott Moore, who retired at the completion of their terms at the 2014 Annual General Meeting, for their hard work and dedication. Four new Governors were elected to the Board: Geoff Beattie, C.E.O., Generation Capital Ltd.; Michelle Cameron-Coulter, Honoured Member; Jack Graham, Partner, McInnes Cooper; and Kerrin Lee-Gartner, Honoured Member. We are pleased that the Board of Governors has a strong national presence represented by many regions of Canada.

I would like to thank Dr. Bruce Kidd, Chair of the Honoured Member Selection Committee and his dedicated Committee Members for their excellent work in identifying the annual class of Inductees. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame received a record number of nominations in 2013 from across the country from the public, national sport organizations, and other sport-specific and regional Halls of Fame.

The Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame 2013 Induction Celebrations presented by the Canada Games were held in Toronto on October 16, 2013 as we returned to our roots and welcomed eleven new athletes and builders into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. This sold out event enabled us to reconnect with the Toronto community that supported Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame since its inception in 1955.

Thank you to our Honoured Members, supporters, Governors, Honoured Member Selection Committee Members, staff and volunteers whose dedication allows us to continue our work to inspire Canadians in sport and in life.

Induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is the pinnacle of sporting achievement in Canada. Our Honoured Members are role models for all Canadians, whose stories inspire us all to be the best we can be in sport and life. Each year, we induct a new class of athletes and builders into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame 2013 Induction Celebrations presented by the Canada Games were held on October 16, 2013 at the Sheraton Centre in Toronto, and included the Molson Coors VIP reception for Honoured Members and sponsors, Induction Ceremonies and Gala Dinner. The event was broadcast nationally on Rogers Sportsnet throughout November. All funds raised were used to support Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s programs and services.

MOTIVATE

Over 7,700 students participated in education programs in 2013. A new education program was launched called “Inspiring Canadian Youth Through Sports Stories” (ICYTSS) funded by the Daryl K. Seaman fund at the Calgary Foundation. Four (ICYTSS) programs were run in 2013 and incorporated video of our Honoured Members’ value-related stories and included presentations by Honoured Members Pat Stapleton and Michelle Cameron-Coulter. The program is also presented in partnership with the National Sports School and included presentations from current athletes. The RBC Equal Access program allowed underprivileged children access to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame for an inspiring and educational field trip. 14 schools were able to visit Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and participate in our education programs at no cost to the schools. An off-site education program was presented by Honoured Member, Pat Stapleton as part of the 2013 induction ceremonies day on October 16, 2013. Over 110 students from three Toronto schools attended.

Our current education experience has been developed and presented to in-house audiences of youth through the presentation of six curriculum-based education programs for students from kindergarten to grade 12. Over 15,000 students have had the opportunity to visit Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame over the past two and a half years and learn about the amazing stories of our Honoured Members and have been inspired by lessons these stories hold. Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s education programs offer students the opportunity to experience the museum’s twelve galleries, engage with our fifty-three interactive activities (from wheelchair racing to sports broadcasting), and watch the inspiring “Canada’s Greatest Sport Moments” film. Programs also include interactive tours and hands-on experiences with historical artefacts.

Stories of sacrifice, dedication, perseverance, teamwork, passion, and resilience can be found within our 540 Honoured Members’ stories. The lessons found in these stories can be applied in day-to-day life and inspire youth to keep working towards their goals and dreams. In 2013, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame began working toward a virtual education program that would provide access to educational and inspiring programs across Canada.

Since 1955, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame has built an extensive collection of over 95,000 artefacts and thousands of photographs and videos. Our collection includes everything from Terry Fox’s iconic running shoe from his Marathon of Hope to the largest collection of Olympic and Paralympic artefacts in Canada to historical sports moments caught on film.

Many new acquisitions were received in 2013 including Honoured Member collections from Marion Lay, Jamie Salé, David Pelletier and Andrea Neil. Donations from the public included a 2014 Sochi torch and an original set of Hidy and Howdy costumes,

mascots for the 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary.

Sport vs. Science: The Perfect MatchOn loan from Museum of Man and Nature, Sherbrooke Quebec and on display from January 15-May 29, 2013. An interactive exhibit for the whole family with sport challenges and activities that demonstrate how science and technology have contributed to enhance sport performance for all Canadians, from amateurs to elite athletes. Lace Up: Canada’s Passion for Skating Exhibit on loan from Canadian Museum of History. The first exhibition in Canada to focus on all three skating sports: figure skating, speed skating and hockey. It tells the story, both ancient and contemporary, of one of the oldest and most popular recreational and sporting activities in the country.

Mount Everest – 40th anniversary of First Ascent Exhibit to mark the 40th anniversary of the first ascent of Mt. Everest, the world’s highest mountain. Dave Rodney, the first Canadian to have summited Mt. Everest on two occasions, attended the unveiling and gave a presentation to local high school students about his ascents. Students were given the rare opportunity to “touch the top of Everest” by holding rocks taken from the top of Mt. Everest. The exhibit, “Everest: 29,035 ft (8,850m)”, was on display from May 29 to August 31, 2013.

World Hockey Association – 40th Anniversary The World Hockey Association changed the game of major league hockey for Canada and the world. The WHA exhibit located in the Sport Chek Hockey Gallery features artefacts such as the original AVCO World Trophy (the WHA championship trophy), a hockey stick autographed by Gordie Howe and Marty Howe, original pennants of all WHA teams, Bill Goldsworthy’s Edmonton Oilers jersey and special features on all the Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame Honoured Members who played in the WHA, including Wayne Gretzky. Also included is a hockey stick created for Wayne Gretzky when he was first drafted. The hockey legend’s name is misspelled on the stick.

Doc Seaman Exhibit & Program Funding received from The Calgary Foundation – Daryl K. Seaman Canadian Hockey Fund gave students a chance to hear a live presentation from an Honoured Member and have a presentation from an athlete from the National Sport School.

Thanks to the Government of Canada, the Province of Alberta, the City of Calgary, WinSport and our generous community donors and corporate sponsors, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame’s $30 Million international award-winning facility carries no long or short term debt. Similar to most Registered Charitable Organizations, we must annually fundraise to maintain our ongoing operations. After almost three years of operation, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame continues to grow and develop new programs and opportunities for donors and sponsors to invest in our efforts to inspire Canadians through teaching the critical values that form a part of all of our Honoured Members’ stories. The values of hard work, setting goals, perseverance, overcoming obstacles, teamwork and leadership, to name a few, are critical for not only youth, but also for businesses, families and communities.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame offers a range of program investments including the development of a National Virtual DistanceLearning Program, the re-launch of the Tom Longboat trophy to recognize Canada’s top male and female Aboriginal athletes, and our concept for Canada’s 150th Anniversary in 2017 of a mobile Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame to visit communities and schools across Canada.

As we continually change our exhibits to ensure every visit to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is new and inspiring, we are open to exploring ideas for future exhibits to highlight the diversity of sport in Canada. Lastly, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is planning to launch a long-term sustainability plan which will include naming opportunities, an endowment fund and an annual patron program.

Induction into Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is the highest sporting honour in Canada. Each year, a class of the country’s most influential and inspiring athletes and builders are inducted. All Canadians are invited to nominate Athletes and Builders for
