Power Industry Experience: 2011 – Current Diagnostic Test Technician (Transmission & Distribution Condition monitoring)

Job PurposeMichael offers exceptional performance and precise delivery on all tasks from electrical plants, controls and systems. With a background in driving operational safety and experience with ENERGEX and in the Australian Defence Force, Michael demonstrates his expertise across the board; including condition monitoring, network switching, fault diagnosis and repair, high voltage controls, and Australian Standards compliance. His flawless record in safety, procedural compliance and professionalism has played a vital role in New Power’s success.

Duties≥ Completed installation and commissioning of substation and network transmission plant,

protection and control equipment. Applied system knowledge to locate and resolve system failures. ≥ Conducted HV switching procedures to isolate, earth and make safe high voltage apparatus

up to 132kV≥ Conducted on-line testing of Electrical equipment across a large network to identify insulation defects, contact resistance defects (hot spots) and gas leakage. ≥ Conducted in-depth off-line testing of Electrical equipment do give a good indication of the

equipment’s quality and give early warning of possible failures and to identify the best means for efficient repair. ≥ Provide network scanning methods, maintenance and commissioning testing on various

types and make of High voltage equipment.

2010 – 2011 ENERGEX - Electrical Fitter Mechanic (Substation Services)

Job PurposeFollowing successful completion of apprenticeship appointed to Substation services supporting installation, testing, commissioning, maintenance and repair of HV substation plant and equipment. Later appointed to provide specialist support to network condition monitoring.

Duties≥ Seamlessly managed daily work program tasks consistently ensuring positive outcomes that supported customer service standards and effective substation and network performance. ≥ Completed installation and commissioning of substation and network transmission plant,

protection and control equipment. Applied system knowledge to locate and resolve system failures. ≥ Operated various internal computer systems for network data acquisition and maintained

related work, safety and compliance documentation and reports.≥ Maintained unblemished performance and safety record with consistent record for professionalism, attendance and dress.≥ Selected by Energex to complete Advanced Diploma in Electrical Engineering and maintained positive results in work and studies. ≥ Supported condition monitoring of Network Transmission Services using HV AC and DC testing, feeding back data on asset conditions and life extension opportunities.≥ Applied a variety of testing procedures including Dielectric loss angle test, Partial discharge test, Insulation resistance test and micro ohmmeter test as needed.≥ Performed ongoing Safety Audits and Risk Assessments ensuring safe work environment and compliance with WH&S Act and Energex procedural requirements.≥ Assisted in HV switching procedures to isolate, earth and make safe high voltage apparatus. Assisted on occasion with HV DC cable testing.≥ Ensured timely, responses to network transmission maintenance, testing and repair activities

and provided technical advice to ENERGEX and external business personnel as required.

Cable testing is a signifi cant investment with respect to electric power distribution. It should be expected for a cable system to have a high degree of reliability and reasonable life expectancy.

In order to guarantee optimum performance of the power cable system, standards and guidelines have been developed which address the specifi c testing requirements for service-aged extruded and laminated dielectric insulation.

We perform all our tests to the IEEE Standards to ensure the best product for our customers. Ask us about cable testing and the best solution for you. Cable failure through deterioration of electrical insulation can prove costly to your company and pose a potential health threat to your workers.

The major environmental and operating mechanisms, which cause insulation to deteriorate over its working life, include excessive voltage, overheating, internal arcing, material aging, moisture ingress, mechanical stress and physical damage.

The NPD team provides an effi cient cable testing service for our customers. The team has a broad experience in the generation, transmission, distribution and industrial fi elds.

Using the latest diagnostic techniques, we can determine the insulation condition and provide diagnostic reports on your cables.

At NPD we use the latest in offl inepartial discharge detecting technologyand specialise in 2 and 3 phase testingadhering to AS62271.201-2008.

With extensive knowledge of theAustralian Standards we consistentlymaintain a high level of accuracyand professionalism. Let us be thesolution to all your switchgear commissioning and maintenance needs.

Recent studies in the UK have suggested that up to 85% of all disruptive failures in HV insulation are related to partial discharge activity. It follows that partial discharge testing is now recognised as a vital test to determine the condition of

HV insulation and prevent eventual catastrophic failure.

We also offer:≥ AC leakage withstand testing≥ Insulation resistance (IR) testing ≥ Contact resistance testing

Tailored packages are available to suit.

HV Plant commission tested:≥ 11/33kV Circuit breakers and bus bars≥ 11/33kV Ring main units (RMUs)≥ 11/33kV Pole mounted reclosers (PMRs)≥ 11/33kV Capacitor banks≥ Cable commissioning≥ Transformer commissioning

PD/ DLA Commission and Maintenance Testing; Switchgear, Transformers & Cables.

At NPD we use the latest technology in online substation testing. Our technicians are trained and experienced in the latest technology for online substation testing to locate equipment fl aws, in particular partial discharge in HV apparatus.

The equipment used detects defects using TEV, ultrasonic, RF and infrared.

Various problems can be detected such as pending failures from bad connections and insulation degradation. Early detection can prevent loss of life, loss of supply and damage to equipment.

This type of testing is cost effective, un-intrusive, fast and can detect major problems before it is too late.
