JAMES TURRELL: A RETROSPECTIVEExperience 50 works tracing five decades of American artist James Turrell’s career from early light projections and holograms through to immersive light installations at the National Gallery of Australia. Exclusive to Canberra, the exhibition will feature spectacular installations purpose-built in Canberra, plus new acquisitions, drawings, prints and photographs from 13 December to 8 June. Visitors to the National Gallery of Australia will recognise Turrell’s work from the stunning Within without space which opened outside the gallery in 2010. nga.gov.au/JamesTurrell

ENLIGHTEN SHINESSee some of the capital’s finest cultural attractions come alive after dark for the ENLIGHTEN festival. CELEBRATE AUSTRALIA DAYAustralia’s capital is home to some of the nation’s biggest Australia Day celebrations. The lawns of Parliament House is the place to be on 25 January, with the Australia Celebrates Live concert featuring some of the hottest names in Australian music and the announcement of the Australian of the Year awards. CINEMA EXPERIENCE OUTDOORSSummer is the season for outdoor cinema in the national capital. The Sunset Cinema Canberra will return to the Australian National Botanic Gardens from 14 November to 20 December with a fantastic range of films. Summer weather makes this outdoor cinema perfect for picnicking under the stars while watching family flicks, action films, love stories and blockbuster new releases. The annual short film festival Tropfest will be screened live via satellite on 7 December at Stage 88 in Commonwealth Park. LIGHT UP FOR CHRISTMASThroughout December Canberra’s city centre will be a spectacular site illuminated by millions of lights in an attempt to break the Guinness World Record for the largest LED image display in the world. From London Circuit through to Bunda Street, visitors to the city will be witness to the most spectacular display of lights the world has ever seen, including the city’s iconic merry-go-round which will be decorated in 200,000 lights. This charitable event from Friday 28 November until New Year’s Eve will create a magical backdrop while raising funds for SIDS & Kids ACT. inthecitycanberra.com.au

MEMORIAL MARKS FIRST WORLD WAR CENTENARY To mark 100 years since the declaration of the First World War, the Australian War Memorial is running a Roll of Honour Soundscape and Roll of Honour Name Projections. Recordings of school children from across Australia saying the names of each of the 62,000 Australians who died during the First World War will play at the Memorial’s Roll of Honour for the next four years. The Roll of Honour Name Projections will see those same names projected onto the exterior of the Hall of Memory. These programs are powerful additions to the Australian War Memorial’s rich collection and fascinating exhibitions including a redeveloped First World War gallery. awm.gov.au
