The number of homes trading hands via Canadian MLS® Systems fell by 0.9 per cent month-over-month in June 2016. Monthly declines in each of the past two months have left sales activity 2.6 percent below the record set in April 2016. Actual (not seasonally adjusted) sales activity was up 5.2 per cent year-over-year (y-o-y) in June 2016. Year-over-year increases have been steadily losing momentum since February 2016. The number of newly listed homes rose by 2.2 per cent in June 2016 compared to May. New supply climbed among a broad majority of all local mar- kets, led by Greater Toronto, Oakville-Milton, Montreal, Quebec City, and BC's Fraser Valley. The return of activity in Fort McMurray follow- ing its evacuation in May also contributed to the national increase in new listings. The Aggregate Composite MLS® Benchmark price rose by 13.6 per cent y-o-y to $564,700 in June 2016, the biggest gain since December 2006. For the fifth consecutive month, y-o-y price growth accelerated for all Benchmark property types tracked by the index. Keep calories in check while eating outNEW DELHI, (IANS) How do you keep track of calories when eatingout or going to par ties? Well, it is all about making the right choiceswith healthy flours, low fat sauces and the cooking technique, sayexper ts. Anisha Dhar and Nupur Khanna, Co-Founders of Eatonomist-- a gourmet meal planner -- have shared some pointers that you cankeep in mind the next time you dine out.* Use low fat dressing and sauces: Don't add that extra spoon ofcream or cheese or ghee to the food that you consume daily. Use oliveoil for non-Indian cooking and mustard oil for Indian.* Use lean cuts of meat: Trim the fat of the meats that you eat. Thereis enough protein in the meat. You don't need that extra fat.* Use healthy flours: Use flours which are healthier and have low

calories such as multigrain, millets and jowar.* Cooking techniques: Use baking, steaming, grilling, poaching, sousvide as your methods of cooking. Avoid frying your food* Por tion control: Por tion control is one of the most impor tant factorswhile checking calories. Don't eat straight out of a container. Use ameasured bowl/spoon to eat and eat slowly. This helps in under-standing the quantity* Technology: Get an app, or a calorie calculator which tells you yourdaily consumption and helps in keeping the calories in check. Main-tain a diet char t and eat accordingly* Use bowls: Have meals in a bowl if you can. A meal in a bowl hasall the necessary components. The carbs, the protein and the fibre.

Playing action video games may boost driving skillsBEIJING, (IANS) Playing action-based video games may boost theplayers' ability to coordinate visual information with their motor con-trol -- a skill critical to many real-world behaviours including driving, says new research. The findings showed that playing some types ofvideo games can confer benefits for specific visual abilities such assensitivity to contrast and visuo-spatial attention."The research shows that playing easily accessible action video gamescan be a cost-effective tool to help people improve essentialvisuomotor-control skills used for driving," said lead researcher LiLi, Associate Professor at New York University in Shanghai, China.Experienced action gamers showed much greater precision in keep-

ing to their lane and showed less deviation from centre in the face ofincreasing headwinds, when compared to the par ticipants with littleto no action video game experience. To establish a causal link be-tween action video games and visuomotor control skills, the teamrecruited par ticipants who had no action video gaming experience totake par t in a training study. They then compared the visuomotorabilities of players who had played at least 5 hours per week over theprevious 6 months to par ticipants who had negligible action videogame experience. The par ticipants were randomly assigned to eitheran action video game group or a control group, and they completed atotal of 10 1-hour training sessions.

Weight loss can lower protein level associated with cancerWASHINGTON, (IANS) Women who achieved their weight loss goalsthrough diet and exercise showed lower levels of cer tain proteins inthe blood, that play a role in angiogenesis, a research has revealed.Angiogenesis is the process of blood vessel growth that can alsopromote the growth and survival of cancer cells. The findings showed that women who controlled their diet as well asindulged in exercise to gain weight loss also had significantly lowerlevels of the angiogenesis-related proteins than women in the controlgroup. But such effects were not apparent in those in the exercise-only group of women, the researchers said."Our study shows that weight loss is a safe and effective method ofimproving the angiogenic profile in healthy individuals," said CatherineDuggan of Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Women whocontrolled their diet lost 8.5 per cent of body weight. While womenwho indulged in exercise lost 2.4 per cent of body weight, those whocontrolled diet as well as did exercise lost 10.8 per cent. On the otherhand, women who did not indulge in any activity lost merely 0.8 percent. "Exercise is impor tant for helping to prevent weight gain, and tomaintain weight loss, but does not cause a large amount of weightloss on its own," Duggan added. "Our study shows that making lifestylechanges -- in this case simple changes to the diet to reduce weight -- can lower the risk factors for cancer," Duggan noted. In the study, published in the journal American Association for Cancer Research, the team analysed 439 obese, healthy, sedentary post-menopausalwomen aged 50 to 75.

Early bedtime for preschoolerscuts obesity risk laterNEW YORK, (IANS) Preschoolers who are regularly inbed by 8pm, are far less likely to become obese teenag-ers than young children who go to sleep later in the night,a new research has found. According to the research pub-lished in the Journal of Pediatrics, bedtimes after 9 p.m.appeared to double the likelihood of obesity later in life. "Forparents, this reinforces the importance of establishing a bed-time routine," said Sarah Anderson, associate professor at theOhio State University College of Public Health.Obesity can set kids up for a lifelong struggle with weight andhealth complications that can accompany it, including dia-betes and hear t disease, the study revealed. "It's some-thing concrete that families can do to lower their child'srisk and it's also likely to have positive benefits on be-havior and on social, emotional and cognitive development,"added Anderson.

Male and female brains react differently to stressNEW YORK, (IANS) Offering new evidence to show that male andfemale brains are wired differently, new research has found that abrain region involved with stress and keeping hear t rate and bloodpressure high work differently in men and women. While measuring brain activity with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)during blood pressure trials, the researchers found that men andwomen had opposite responses in the right front of the insular cor tex,a par t of the brain integral to the experience of emotions, blood pres-sure control and self-awareness.The insular cor tex has five main par ts called gyri serving differentroles. The researchers found that the blood pressure response in thefront right gyrus showed an opposite pattern in men and women, withmen showing a greater right-sided activation in the area while thewomen showed a lower response."This is such a critical brain area and we hadn't expected to find suchstrong differences between men and women's brains," said the study'slead author Paul Macey from University of California, Los Angeles. This region, the front-right insula, is involved with stress and keepinghear t rate and blood pressure high.

"It's possible the women had already activated this region because ofpsychological stress, so that when they did the physical test in thestudy, the brain region could not activate any more. However, it's also possiblethat this region is wired differently in men and women," Macey noted. The studywas published in the journal Frontiers in Neurology.

Oestrogen patch may cutAlzheimer's risk in some womenNEW YORK, (IANS) Administering the primary female sexhormone oestrogen via a skin patch shor tly after menopausemay reduce Alzheimer's risk in women, suggests new re-search. The study, published in the Journal of Alzheimer'sDisease, found that newly postmenopausal women who re-ceived oestrogen via a skin patch had reduced beta-amyloiddeposits, the sticky plaques found in the brains of people withAlzheimer's disease."This study showed, for the first time, that the brain amyloiddeposition -- a hallmark of Alzheimer's disease -- is reducedin newly postmenopausal women who received 17beta-Es-tradiol patch form of hormone therapy," said lead author KejalKantarci from Mayo Clinic in the US. In the study, women withAPOE e4 -- one form of the most common gene associatedwith late-onset Alzheimer's disease -- had lower levels ofamyloid deposits. Women with APOE e4, who have a greatergenetic risk for Alzheimer's disease, par ticularly benefitedfrom this therapy," Kantarci noted. Menopause is defined asoccurring 12 months after a woman's last menstrual periodand marks the end of menstrual cycles. The researchers useddata from a larger study - Kronos Early Estrogen PreventionStudy. The study aimed to determine the effects of meno-pausal hormone therapy shor tly after menopause, during thecritical window of rapid oestrogen depletion -- five to 36 monthspast menopause. Researchers investigated the brain amy-loid deposition in 68 women aged 42 to 59 who participated inthe Kronos study. The researchers used positron emissiontomography, also known as a PET scan, to look for the brainamyloid deposits three years after the trial ended.

WRONG FOOD HABIT MAYDAMAGE DIET PLANNEW YORK, (IANS) Many diet plans are doomed from thestar t -- The reason being that dieters tend to adopt the wrongstrategies, often planning to ditch their favourite foods andreplace them with less-desirable options, new research hasrevealed.A study published in the journal Psychology & Marketing sayssuccessful dieters focus on adding healthy foods and revealsthat health-plan successes are determined by approach oravoidance strategies. "Our research shows that instead ofcreating rules to avoid one's favourite treats, dieters shouldfocus on eating healthy foods that they enjoy," said MeredithDavid, Assistant Professor at Baylor University in the US.Dieters who restrict themselves from consuming the foodsthey love most may be setting themselves up for failure. In-stead, they may be better off by allowing occasional "treats"and focusing attention on healthy foods, revealed the study. The research conducted upon 542 par ticipants hinged on aperson's level of self-control."Our data reveals that individuals who are generally moresuccessful at reaching their goals tend to develop more mo-tivating plans regarding the inclusion of healthy, well-likeditems and the exclusion of unhealthy items that are not one'sfavourites," added David. The researchers found that the par ticipants when asked tolist specific rules that they might use to guide their food con-sumption, a large percentage of them listed restricting andavoiding cer tain foods. This was particularly the case amonglow self-control individuals - those who generally have lesssuccess in reaching their goals. When thinking of unhealthy foods to avoid as a par t of a diet, low self-control individuals think of foods that they really like-- their favourite snacks, and most tempting items. High self-control individuals think of foods that they like but could rea-sonably forgo. When thinking of healthy foods to eat as a par tof a diet, low self-control individuals think of foods they donot like, such as those that they find highly unpalatable whilehigh self-control individuals think of foods they enjoy eating.

DRUG-USE MAY DAMAGE ABILITYTO CHOOSE RIGHT FROM WRONGNEW YORK, (IANS) Regular drug users can have difficulty choosingbetween right and wrong, perhaps because the specific par ts of theirbrains used for moral processing and evaluating emotions are dam-aged by their prolonged drug habits, says a study. There is strong linkbetween drug use and criminal behaviour, but it is not known whetherthe criminal behaviour is in par t a result of the drugs' effects on brainfunction."This is the first study to suggest impairments in the neural systemsof moral processing in both cocaine and methamphetamine users,"said lead author Samantha Fede from University of New Mexico in theUS. The findings were published in Springer's journal Psychopharma-cology.The researchers examined how the neural networks and brain func-tioning of chronic cocaine and methamphetamine users in US jailsrelate to their ability to evaluate and decide about moral situations orscenarios. Poor judgment about moral situations can lead to poor

decision making and subsequent antisocial behaviour. The researchers recorded the life history of substance abuse of 131cocaine and methamphetamine users and 80 non-users incarceratedin New Mexico and Wisconsin prisons. The par ticipants' brains werescanned while they completed a moral decision-making task in whichthey evaluated whether cer tain phrases were morally wrong or not.Compared to the non-users, the regular stimulant users had abnormalneural activity in the frontal lobes and limbic regions of their brainsduring moral processing. Specifically, lifetime stimulant users showedless activity in the amygdala, a group of neurons in the brain thathelps to regulate and understand emotions. The researchers also observed a relationship in the level of engage-ment of the anterior cingulate cor tex: the longer people had beenusing stimulants, the less activity in this region. This is an area of thebrain that coordinates reinforcement, effect and executive action neededin moral decision making.

Workplace climate responsiblefor gender-based job stressNEW YORK, (IANS) The stress that women working in nu-merically male-dominated occupations often repor t is due tounfavourable workplace climate, and not because of inherent"women's nature" as commonly thought, suggests new re-search. The researchers found that when subjected to thenegative social conditions that many women repor t experi-encing in male-dominated occupations, men showed the samephysiological stress response to the conditions as did women."Women are not especially sensitive to negative workplace socialconditions. Rather, both women and men exhibit similar responsesto the same types of stressful workplace conditions," said studyauthor Cate Taylor, assistant professor, Indiana University in the US.To determine the effect of gendered social exclusion, the researcherplaced female study participants in experimental groups with threemale confederates and male study participants in groups with threefemale confederates. The confederates were trained to make thestudy participants feel excluded by talking about stereotypicallymasculine topics or stereotypically feminine topics and by subtlyexcluding the participants from the conversations. In order to mea-sure stress response at several points during the experiment, theresearcher measured levels of the hormone cortisol in the partici-pants' saliva. Cortisol levels rose markedly in participants sub-jected to gendered exclusion but not in the other participants.

E-cigarettes can cut mortalityrate by 21 per cent: StudyNEW YORK, (IANS) Usage of e-cigarettes has led to a 21 percent reduction in smoking-attributable deaths as well as a 20per cent decrease in years lost due to premature mor tality, says a study. Evidence has suggested that increased use of e-cigarette can dramatically decrease cigarette smoking amongyouth and young adults, the researchers said, adding thatvaping is likely to provide positive health benefits that out-weigh the harm. "E-cigarettes can provide the potential toreduce harm and also improve the public health if used as analternative to cigarette smoking," said lead author David Levy,Professor at Georgetown University in Washington, US. How-ever, these e-cigarettes can also increase the harm if peoplebecome smokers as a direct consequence of first trying e-cigarettes, the researchers warned. The "recent claims bysome scientists that e-cigarettes are likely to act as a gate-way to the use of tobacco products are overstated," Levy added. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has recentlybanned the use of e-cigarettes by youth younger than 18, saidthe paper published in the journal Nicotine & Tobacco Re-search. "We want to discourage use of all nicotine and ciga-rette products," Levy said, supporting the move. Despite the esti-mates of an overall public health benefit from e-cigarettes, use of theseproducts in youths needs to be continuously monitored, since use pat-terns are likely to change as the product and awareness aboutthe product changes, the researchers concluded.
