TRANSCRIPT

This wall relief from Egypt reveals an image of an ancient Canaanite.

The Canaanites were the inhabitants of the ancient land named Canaan.

This land now comprises of the present-day regions of western Jordan,

southern and coastal Syria and Lebanon continuing up to the border of modern Turkey,

Israel and Palestine . The Canaanite people are believed to have been the oldest civiliza-

tion in human history.

The Canaanites were a sophisticated agricultural and urban people.

The name Canaan means "Land of Purple" . About 1900 BC, the Canaanites made a

remarkable invention, the Alphabet, where they used a 22 letter system for their writing.

Through them the Alphabet was transmitted to the Greeks and the rest of the European

nations. In addition they invented the most formidable fighting machine of ancient times-

the Chariot; it was pulled along by two horses and manned by two men, one to manoeuvre

and the other to shoot arrows.

Canaanite mythology marks 'Baal' as the greatest Canaanite deity.

He appears as a warrior god, "the prince", lord of earth", and

"the Rider on the clouds". He is a thunder and lightening storm-god that sends rain on

earth to fertilize "Ishtar", the goddess of earth, to give birth to vegetation. His daughters

were 'Mist' and 'Dew', and his father 'Dajan',

the personification of corn.

The Bible reveals that Canaan was the fourth son of Ham and brother of Mizraim, who is

Egypt. It was Canaan, the grandson of Noah who Noah had cursed in Genesis 9:25.

The descendants of Canaan are listed in Genesis 10:15-19. The Canaanites actually

became a general term for "all the inhabitants" of the land of ancient Israel,

and especially to the tribe who dwelt west of the Dead Sea and had conquered the whole

area east of the Jordan River.
