Welcome

Welcome to the University of CambridgeDepartment of Chemical Engineering and BiotechnologyChemical engineering and biotechnology have key roles to play in global

issues such as the environment, sustainability and healthcare.

Our aim is to produce the academic, industrial and entrepreneurial leaders of

tomorrow, to drive the development of industrial processes and to create

advances in chemical engineering and biotechnology. We are committed to

working at the interfaces of the underpinning science disciplines of

engineering, chemistry, biology and physics. We create a unique

multidisciplinary research environment where collaborations within the

University and with external academic and industrial organisations can

flourish.

Why study at CEB?It is an exciting time to develop a career in chemicalengineering and biotechnology and to apply yourknowledge and skills to address the global problemsfaced by society today. Graduate study may lead tocareers in areas as diverse as the control of carbondioxide emissions to the development of new deviceswhich seek to mimic biological organs and, as withmany of our alumni, to leadership roles in academia andbusiness across the globe.

The department offers a unique environment in whichto undertake postgraduate study. Students join a vibrantresearch community staffed by world-leadinginterdisciplinary research scientists, many of whom havestrong business skills as well as a keen interest in theeducation of the next generation of researchers andinnovators. CEB is a relatively large department spreadover three sites since the merger with the Institute ofBiotechnology in 2008. It is comprised of some 50postdoctoral researchers and close to 200postgraduates. Individuals of almost 50 differentnationalities bring a global perspective and diverseexpertise, thus contributing to our world-class researchoutput and reputation for academic excellence.Students enjoy close interactions with staff and fellowstudents and within and between research groups.

Research within the department is focused on five mainthemes: Biotechnology, Measurement, Microstructure

Engineering, Modelling and Processes (specific researchareas are listed on page 6). In the 2008 UK ResearchAssessment Exercise, 85% of the department's researchactivity was rated as internationally excellent, placingCEB as the top ranked department in the country.Academic research undertaken here typically involvescollaboration with other leading internationaluniversities and strong connections with industry.Research costs are supported in part by the RCUK -Government Research Councils and by a variety ofindustrial partners and multinational companies thatinvest in shared research interests and the application ofemerging technologies.

The department is widely acknowledged for itsentrepreneurial achievements and the successfulintegration of multidisciplinary research, commercialexploitation and management training. CEB spin-offcompanies have brought a range of patented productsto market, including a functional food, next generationglucose sensors, novel therapies for the treatment ofcancer and the diagnosis of disease as well as recyclingand environmental technology solutions. Some of theseachievements were recognised by The Queen’s

Anniversary Prize for Higher and FurtherEducation to the Institute of Biotechnologyin 2007 and highlight our dedication inproviding leading research facilities andinvesting in people.

Study optionsStudents are invited to apply for any research or taught postgraduate degreeprogrammes at CEB. We offer three-year research-based programmes leading tothe award of PhD in Chemical Engineering or Biotechnology. The MPhil inChemical Engineering and Biotechnology is a one-year research-based coursewhich, upon successful completion, may count towards the entry requirementsfor a PhD programme.

For those choosing a taught degree course, we offer two Master's degrees: theMPhil in Advanced Chemical Engineering (ACE), which includes a researchcomponent, and the MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise (MBE). Both are professionalpractice courses that provide training in science and technology as well asbusiness and management.

Research eventsStudents enrolled on either research or taught programmes are invited toattend the department’s science seminar programme. As students progressthey are given training in preparing for practice in delivering poster andaudiovisual presentations. Towards the end of their studies, the annualPostgraduate Conference provides later stage PhD students with a formalforum to present their findings to department colleagues, as well as visitingacademics and industrialists.

Students are encouraged to broaden their expertise by participation in aselection of options from the wide range of transferable skills developmentcourses offered in the department and centrally by the University. Examplesof these include information technology, project and time managementtraining, communication skills and intellectual property awareness.

Course OverviewThis unparalleled one-year, full-time,taught Master’s programme is forthose seeking the advanced skillsrequired by companies in which rapidchange and interdisciplinary workingis now standard practice. The MPhilACE starts in the autumn of each year.The course is unique because:

• Candidates receive an educationboth in advanced aspects ofChemical Engineering and inessential areas of businessadministration, such as technologypolicy, company formation, financeand management, globaleconomics and sustainabledevelopment;

• There is a management consultancyproject for a UK client organisation,designed to develop professionalproblem-solving skills; and

• It offers conventional researchexperience at a leading academicinstitution.

ContentStudents combine advancedchemical engineering studies withessential aspects of businessadministration. A wide range ofscience-based elective courses is alsoavailable. A five-month researchproject complements theprogramme.

Michaelmas and Lent TermsStudents take two advanced chemicalengineering modules, theManagement of Technology andInnovation module (run by the JudgeBusiness School), two core chemicalengineering modules, and fiveengineering/ business electivemodules. The taught material

enhances basic knowledge onchemical engineering fundamentals,as well as offering experience of otherscience and business baseddisciplines. The modules are assessedby both examination and writtencoursework.

March – AugustDuring this period, studentsundertake a full-time research projectwithin the department. The researchmay include industrial collaboration.The project is assessed by seminarand dissertation.

ProgrammeObjectivesThe programme sets ambitiouseducational objectives for itsstudents, including the developmentof:

• An advanced understanding offundamental areas of chemicalengineering;

• An understanding of essential areasof business administration, e.g.finance and management,technology policy, companyformation and structure, globaleconomics and sustainabledevelopment;

• Professional consultancy skills,including time management,teamwork and leadership abilities,whilst interacting with companypersonnel in order to obtaininformation effectively and defineoptimal outcomes for the client;and

Course OverviewThe MPhil in Bioscience Enterprise(MBE) programme is a taughtscience, technology and businesscourse intended for those who havethe ambition to found technologycompanies or take up leadership,executive, or consultancy roles in thelife science sector.

All students follow the same syllabusduring the first two terms of thisintensive nine-month professional-practice programme. Teachingcovers the commercial exploitationof the latest advances inbiotechnology together with thebusiness and management skillsassociated with bringing scientificopportunities to market. There is aparticular emphasis onunderstanding how companies arecreated, funded, and developed.Learning is based on real businessscenarios, and lectures and casestudies are frequently delivered bysenior company executives.

Science syllabus: Small molecule andbiopharmaceutical drugdevelopment; medical devices,diagnostics; agri-biotech.

Business syllabus: Product andcompany valuation; partnerships andalliances; healthcare economics;accounting and finance; regulatoryaffairs; technology and innovationmanagement; marketing; strategy;intellectual property and corporatelaw.

Students have numerousopportunities to apply their skills andthe principles learned, for example,when working in teams on aconsulting project and in developinga plan for a concept company.During the third term students areengaged on an internship with a lifescience company where they areresponsible for a defined businessproject and collect data and analyseit as the basis for a dissertation.

The MBE course offers participants an unparallelededucational experience in both the department and theneighbouring Judge Business School, with access toleading scientists, entrepreneurs, and academics and thelife science business network. The department is uniquein its practical and successful approach to bio-entrepreneurship and is widely acclaimed for theexcellence of its science and business graduates.

International PerspectiveStudents gain an international perspective of theindustry during a faculty-led study tour to the Boston,MA, USA life science cluster. In addition, class membersusually organise an optional study visit to anotherdestination, including in recent years Switzerland, China,and Sweden. Please note that additional charges aremade for travel and other expenses associated with theprogramme.

AssessmentWhilst there are no formal examinations, attainment isassessed throughout the course with emphasis onlearning through problem-solving and teamwork in the

research, preparation and delivery of presentations andproject work. Written submissions include science andtechnology papers, various short reports and criticalappraisals, a client briefing paper and a dissertation.Students are encouraged to participate in extracurricularenterprise activities including regional and nationalbusiness competitions and are required to submit abusiness plan as one of the course assignments.

Entry RequirementsApplicants must hold an excellent first degree in thebiological, medical, or physical sciences or haveexperience in the financial or legal sectors. A stronginterest in pursuing a business career in the life sciences,and a fluent command of English are essential. A higherdegree or postgraduate experience in an academic orbusiness environment is highly advantageous.

Edward C.White, Jr.Chemical Engineering PhD

I joined theComputationalModelling Group thisyear after completingthe Certificate ofAdvanced Study inMathematics atCambridge in 2008-2009. I am partlyfunded by the

Cambridge Overseas Trusts and by Hughes Hall. Prior tocoming to Cambridge, I worked in finance andinvestments in New York City for thirty years. In additionto a BA degree in economics, I hold an MS degree inquantitative analysis (statistics and optimization), and anMS degree in mathematics.

Currently, I am working on integrated computationalmodels that combine the analysis of combustionchemistry with the analysis of soot particle dynamics.Such models are useful in the search for new fuels and inthe quest to achieve cleaner, more fuel efficient internalcombustion engine designs.

I have a strong interest in mathematics, computationalscience and their applications.

As I began to consider PhD study, I knew that I wantedto work on challenging industrial problems involvingmathematical and numerical methods in a group settingthat fosters cooperation and teamwork. I was able tofind both in the Computational Modelling Group withinthe Department of Chemical Engineering andBiotechnology.

The best aspect of my research is its highlyinterdisciplinary nature. The modelling of combustionand particle processes involves chemistry, physics,engineering, mathematics, statistics and computing,generally at a very high level. It is fascinating to seethese very different fields brought together to solveproblems.

Ria KoupritziBiotechnology PhD

After receiving myBSc (Hons) in physicsfrom the AristotleUniversity ofThessaloniki, Greece,and during myMaster’s course innanotechnology atthe Universities ofLeeds and Sheffield, I

started developing an interest in biology.

In order to pursue doctoral studies, I mainly startedlooking at the websites of different universities andresearch groups in the UK to see what opportunitiesthey offered on applications combining biology andphysics. I was especially intrigued by the plethora ofgroups working on research areas that bring togetherphysics, biology, chemistry and biochemistry souniquely here at the University of Cambridge.

Professor Chris Lowe’s research group offered me a fullyfunded Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC)/Engineeringand Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) PhDstudentship to explore potential applications of a newlydeveloped in-house technology. The project involvedtesting bio-molecular interactions on the MagneticAcoustic Resonator Sensor (MARS). Without a secondthought, I grabbed the opportunity to work on a uniqueproject in one of the best universities in the worldsituated in one of the most beautiful cities in the UK.

From my personal experience, the structure of theUniversity and the resources available and thecollaboration among departments and research groupsprovide the ideal setting for anyone pursuingpostgraduate studies here.

WilsonYeungMPhil Advanced Chemical Engineering (ACE)

I am a Chinesestudent born in HongKong but raised andeducated in the UKsince the age of four.Having completedmy undergraduatestudies in ChemicalEngineering at theUniversity College

London, I enrolled on the MPhil Advanced ChemicalEngineering at Cambridge University as a self-fundedstudent.

The department provides the highest quality ofteaching, and the academic staff are very passionate andexcel in their respective subjects. Being part of a smallgroup of talented, disciplined, funny and culturallydiverse MPhil students makes the department an evenmore enjoyable environment.

The MPhil ACE is truly unrivalled. Not only do the coremodules offer useful further technical knowledge in thefield of chemical engineering, but the business andmanagement electives taught at the Judge BusinessSchool also add another dimension to the programme.

Since joining the department in October 2009, I havecompleted a rather intellectually stimulating module innumerical methods. At present, I look forward tochoosing my research topic for the summer beforestarting the Management of Technology and InnovationProgramme consulting project in Lent Term.

JennyVersnelMPhil Bioscience Enterprise (MBE)

I was born inCambridge, but themajority of myeducation took placein South Africa whereI trained in Geneticsand Microbiology.Following my firstpostgraduate degree,I worked for several

years on MRC funded research projects latterly focusingon rejection factors associated with organtransplantation. On returning to the UK, I moved to thecharitable sector and before joining the MBEprogramme was Executive Director of Research andPolicy at Asthma UK. There I was responsible for their £3million research programme and its strategicdevelopment, health policy and influencing work atWestminster and in Brussels.

Being entrepreneurial by nature, I identified potentialcommercial opportunities, but I realised that I lacked thebusiness skills required to bring these to fruition. Whilstinitially believing the solution was an MBA, I soonrecognised that what I wanted was a course morefocused on innovation and entrepreneurship in the fieldof science. The Cambridge MPhil in Bioscience Enterpriseprogramme aligned with my aspirations, and myambition is to put this learning into practice and bring atleast one of my ideas to market.

For me, the most stimulating lectures are those where Iam learning first hand from entrepreneurs, but I alsoappreciate the breadth of topics covered in the courseand diverse opportunities to hear from people acrossthe industry. The varied educational and culturalbackgrounds of my colleagues provide stimulatingperspectives for group work and opportunities tocombine skills to explore new business opportunities.

The CollegesGraduate students at Cambridge arenot only members of the University butalso members of a college. Thecollegiate system of the Universitycreates an environment in which youwill meet people from other disciplinesand participate in a wide variety ofcultural, sporting and social activities.

Colleges provide accommodation,meals and other amenities. Facilitiesvary but typically include studentcommon rooms, libraries, laundry andcomputing facilities. Sports facilitiessuch as rowing, rugby, football, cricket,athletics, squash, tennis and badmintonare usually available at little or no cost.

University of Cambridge and EnvironsCambridge is a great place to be a student. If you havean image of Cambridge, it is probably one of ancientbuildings, immaculate green lawns and people puntingdown a willow-fringed river. This is an accurate image -the city is stunningly beautiful - but there is a lot more toit than that.

Cambridge is a fascinating mix, but it is small enough toretain its community atmosphere. A town of bustlingstreets, theatres, cinemas, cafes and restaurants, it also

has a thriving central market and a good range of shops.Green spaces and parks with cows grazing on themeadows are a feature of the city.

When you want to escape, the countryside is very closewith pleasant walking and cycle routes from the citycentre to villages such as Coton and Madingley. Furtherafield, visit Ely to see the magnificent cathedral andabsorb the unique and mysterious atmosphere of theFens.

Cambridge has good road and rail connections to therest of the UK, and London is only 50 minutes away bytrain. The city is also within easy reach of all London'sinternational airports, and there is a direct 30 minute raillink to London Stansted Airport.
