A. Curricular Highlights

Online Academic Classes

The Covid pandemic situation which started around March, forced us to start our new academic

session with online classes instead of offline. What would have been a new session with children

all around and the school resonating with their laughter, we ended up brainstorming on how to

take classes online for our students.

We started with our Zoom classes from April 1 onwards for classes 3-5. All the concerned staff members were trained and given the requisite technical assistance in order to take online classes

successfully.

However, for classes’ nursery – 2, we stuck to videos, worksheets and modules prepared by the

teachers. The online classes for our little toddlers started from the month of July. The children

were very excited to connect with their teachers, especially nursery. Due to the pandemic, these

children never got the opportunity to see their school or class or the teacher. Along with the

academic classes, we also started with music classes, both Indian and Western for the children.

During this period, we had launched our parent portal. In order to facilitate the easy access of the

worksheets and modules to the parents, the portal along with WhatsApp was being used

extensively.

Along with studies, the students also attended reading, art as well as singing classes. Periodically

videos by the sports department and the dance department were also shared with our students

and parents.

Hence, it was of utmost importance to us to give a holistic approach to these online classes.

love reading his books, throughout the world.

We celebrated his birthday by telling stories from his books and relating incidents from his life which

influenced the plots and characters of his storybooks through the week, starting Sept. 14.

Activity

A role-play activity was organized with 3A wherein the children made animal masks and spoke about

their favorite animals. They participated enthusiastically and enjoyed themselves thoroughly.

Van Mahotsav

An online assembly was conducted to celebrate Van Mahotsav. Students of classes 4 and 5 along with

the staff members, were part of this assembly. The assembly started with the prayer – Swayam Vidhata,

post which Ms. Priti Arun spoke about the significance of Van Mahotsav. The assembly ended with an

informative video being shown to all. This is the first time we had an online assembly and the children

enjoyed being part of it.

Page 8: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 7

As part of the Van Mahotsav celebrations, the school conducted an eco-friendly project where the

children of classes IV and V were asked to plant seeds and saplings in their homes and click a picture

of themselves (dressed in green) along with their little plants and send to the school. These pictures

were compiled digitally to make a musical video with the song "Ek Paudha Hum Lagayen, Ek Paudha

Tum", sung by the music teacher.

Webinars for children

Interactive Webinar on ‘Butterflies’

The school in collaboration with Bombay Natural History Society, Conservation Education Centre-

Delhi, organized an interactive webinar on ‘Butterflies’. The webinar aimed to raise awareness about the

butterfly diversity found in our city and to help restore butterfly habitats. The webinar covered the

following topics –

(i) Introduction to Butterflies

(ii) Butterfly Gardening

(iii) Butterfly Ecology

Science Activity

An egg activity was conducted in class 5. Children were amazed to see that the egg which sank in tap

water, floated in saltwater. By this activity, they were introduced to the concept of density.

Children who didn't have eggs at home used a potato.

Once a week, children demonstrated small experiments followed by discussions on topics related to

Science. It was a great way to break the monotony of the class and also learning happened interestingly.

To show that air occupies space To show that hot water and cold

water have different densities

Page 11: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 10

While studying asexual reproduction in plants, children of class 5 grew various plants like money plant,

rose, potato, carrot, onion, ginger, and garlic from stem cuttings, modified stems, and roots.

The difference between sexual (reproduction by seeds) and asexual reproduction in plants was

clearly understood by performing this activity.

Some children had a real green thumb, as you can see from the following pictures of the lush and

beautiful plants grown by them.

Page 12: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 11

Class 3 children conducted the “blooming flower

experiment” during the online science class. The children

made coloured paper flowers and kept them ready

before the class. During the session, the petals of the

flowers were folded and dropped into a trough of water.

The children were thrilled to see the gradual unfolding

of the petals. The experiment was a success! The paper

flower is powered by the scientific phenomenon called

'capillary action'. Paper is made up of small fibres. When

these fibres absorb water, they swell up and the paper

expands. This makes the creases flatten out, which in

turn makes the flower open.

Class 4 has been studying a chapter on plants.

Transpiration is an important part of this chapter. To

understand the concept even better, experiments in

capillary action were conducted:

1. Tissue paper was folded and only its end dipped in a

glass about a quarter full with water. The children were amazed to find the other end of the

tissue become wet! The water reached the other end of the paper in a matter of minutes!

Capillary action at its best. The tiny tube-like fibres in the tissue absorbed the water and passed

it further and further up... all against gravity!

2. Capillary action and the suction created by transpiration are also responsible for water being

transported to all parts of a plant, however

high and however tall. This was experienced

by putting a stem of a white flower... gladiola

or chrysanthemum in a glass containing

coloured water (coloured by adding blue or

orange food colouring). In a few hours, the

children could observe their white flower had

traces of the colour they used (blue or

orange) on its petals! Another amazing

phenomenon in nature thanks to capillary

action is transpiration. The fine tubes in the

plant stem absorb water and send it further

up. This upward movement of water is further

enhanced by transpiration where water loss

from leaves creates space for more water to

move up from below.

These were enjoyable and informative

activities for the students

Page 13: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 12

Class 3 children conducted the candle experiment during the online science class. The children lit a

candle and placed it in a plate of coloured water. They observed that when covered with a glass the

flame was put off within seconds allowing the coloured water to enter the glass where a vacuum was

created. The children confidently conducted the experiment which went off smoothly.

The science classes in class 4 started the new year with an experiment called “The Magic Milk” as

part of the chapter on materials and solutions. It

involved dipping a cotton bud in liquid dishwashing

soap and dipping this, in turn, in milk-containing food

colouring. The children were mesmerized at the flow

of colours in the milk as soon as the bud containing

the liquid soap touched the food colour droplets in

the milk! It was super fun for the children (and the

parents, in some cases!). The children were equally

amazed to find out the science behind it!

Page 14: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 13

Class 3 started their new year with a lively and colourful song “Can’t Stop the Feeling” wishing a

happy new year to each other. Seeing the enthusiasm for some good dance moves this was continued

in further classes with dancing along with a song called “I like to Move it, Move it” from the movie

Madagascar. This was an effective and enjoyable way of introducing the lesson on “Force and Motion”.

As part of the school’s continuing efforts to create environmental awareness and conscientiousness,

the children of classes 4 and 5 were encouraged to appear for the Green Olympiad on the 17th of

December, organized by TERI

The results of TERI’s Green Olympiad held in December for classes 4 & 5, were declared in January.

The children performed encouragingly well.

SowGood

Last year we had collaborated with a farming organization called

SowGood, which conducted integrated farming classes with class 3.

This year too we had SowGood take these classes online.

Along with our regular science classes, we had SowGood (a farming organization) taking classes

with class 3. They had a session of making bio-pesticides, by fermenting green chillies, garlic

cloves, onion, and neem leaves in water for 3-4 days. This solution helps the pests to stay away

from the plants without killing them. Also, it doesn’t have any adverse effect on humans, unlike

the chemical ones.

Children were also introduced to the growing seasons and discussions based on the benefit of

eating seasonal and local food were done during the class. Wheat and rice are the most popular

and widely eaten grains. However, the students were also told about other grains like millets

along with their nutritional benefits. They were also asked to grow coriander in small planters.

Social Studies

West Bengal Day

Studying about West Bengal is part of our Class 5 SST curriculum.

As is done every year, this year too we had a special online assembly

– West Bengal Day held on October 20. The assembly started

with the prayer Anondo Loke sung by two of our class 4 students,

Saushamya and Baruni. Three students, Adrita, Anwita,

and Midori danced enthusiastically to the famous Bengali

song Dhitang Dhitang Bole. Post the dance, Abir and Khanak of

class 5 gave presentations on Kolkata and Durga Puja respectively.

The assembly was brightened by three students from Prep

A- Adrija, Ishaan, and Shreyan reciting nursery rhymes in Bengali. The assembly ended with the

teachers evoking the festive spirit by their Dhunuchi Dance.

Academic Excellence

A child of class Nur B, Priyesh Nanda has secured 3rd rank in the Pre-primary Olympiad.

B. School Culture

Exit interviews are something that has been happening for the past many many years. Usually,

the headmistress interacts with the outgoing class and asks for their feedback and suggestions,

before they prepare themselves to go to Srinivaspuri. However, sadly this couldn’t happen because

of the schools being closed.

C. Special Assemblies and Events

Founder’s Day

As is done every year, this year too we celebrated Founder’s Day on April 7th, however, with a

slight twist. Our music department, in collaboration with the technical department and inputs from

Mrs. And Mr. Roy, released a video celebrating Shri. A.C. Deb’s complete journey from the start

till the end. The video and the hard work were well appreciated by all our staff members.

Earth Day

Earth Day, which had its 50th anniversary this year,

was celebrated with a video uploaded on our

school’s Facebook page, website, and YouTube

channel with the underlying message - The only way

Earth will survive is if each of us joins hands and takes

action today. We need to change the way we live and

function daily. Instead of taking from her, we need to give

back to the Earth. To do that, we need to make each day count and plan for a better life.

World Dance Day

April 29th is celebrated as World Dance Day.

Students from classes nursery to 5 along with Sumit

Samanta (dance teacher) and P.C. Arun (WM

teacher), came up with a video which was uploaded

on Facebook, Instagram and sent to all parents and

staff. The students were asked to send a 10 - sec video

on the song “Can't stop the feeling”. All the videos

sent by the students were painstakingly consolidated into one and finally, the World Dance Day video

was made.

Independence Day

A week before Independence Day, various activities were organized for all our students from nursery

to 2. These included making craft items, doing non-fire cooking, and tricolour hand painting, among

various other activities.

Nursery

Our younger most citizens celebrated Independence Day with a special session conducted via Zoom.

They made tricolored sandwiches, did cotton dabbing on a kite and thumb painting.

They thoroughly enjoyed these activities. A few even dressed up in tricolored clothes.

Prep

Our Prep children celebrated Independence Day by doing hand printing on a white T-shirt. Some who

did not have t-shirts did it on handkerchiefs and paper. The children were seen having a great time doing the activity.

INDEPENDENCE DAY CELEBRATIONS 2020

Two online assemblies were conducted for the entire

school titled 'the 1857 Mutiny' and ' the Quit India

Movement on Aug. 12 and Aug. 14 through Zoom

respectively.

Both the assemblies began with the national song

'वन्दे मािरम'् as the prayer and were a mix of theme-based

talks given by Ms. Manjula and Ms. Mithu, interspersed with

lively videos made with student participation.

On Aug 12, two videos were shown. The first one was a

group recitation by Class 5 students, who recited the

famous poem 'झािंसी की रानी' by Subhadra Kumari Chauhan. The second video showed our nursery

children wearing traditional and regional dresses, some dressed as freedom fighters and some as

eminent Indian personalities.

The Quit India assembly video showed the Class 5 students shouting out slogans given by famous

leaders during the freedom struggle. All videos had patriotic songs sung by our own students, in the

background. Both assemblies ended with the National Anthem.

Page 25: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 24

The flag was hoisted in the school on 15th August at 10

am by Mrs. Anu Behl Roy. The ceremony was attended

by very few teachers and karamcharis, maintaining social

distancing norms. This was followed by an informal and

enthusiastic singing of patriotic songs. The spirit of

patriotism and nationalistic feeling permeated

throughout the assemblies and the flag hoisting

ceremony.

Teachers’ Day.

The students very enthusiastically expressed their affection and gratitude towards their teachers

through lovely greeting cards, posters, blurbs, song, and dance videos, and sweet little texts and

voice messages which they posted on the class WhatsApp groups.

A special online assembly was conducted for the entire school on 5th September at 10.30 am. The

prayer song 'Gurur Brahma' was sung by a few teachers. This was followed by a small talk on Dr.

Sarvapalli Radhakrishnan and a video on him. A special video was shown where the students could

get a glimpse of how the teachers are keeping themselves busy with recreational activities during

the lockdown period. A bunch of students with the help of a few teachers had prepared a

'surprise' video for the entire staff to express

their love and affection in the form of beautiful

quotes from teachers. This was much

appreciated by all the teachers and many went

emotional over the effort made by these

students to make the day very special for them.

The assembly ended with the national anthem.

The feeling and spirit of love and affection

coming from the students for their teachers

and vice versa on this special day visibly

permeated throughout the assembly.

Gandhi Jayanti

A special online assembly was conducted for the entire school on

2nd October. The assembly started with one of Bapu's favourite

hymns 'Abide with Me' sung by few children. This was followed by

a talk on Lal Bahadur Shastri and a video showing a life-changing

instance in his life. Thereafter a video having scenes from Mahatma

Gandhi's life was shown. The video was set to the bhajan वैष्णव जन sung by three of our teachers. रघपुति

राघव राजा राम , a prayer synonymous with Gandhiji. The assembly ended with the national anthem.

Children's Day & Diwali Assembly 2020

A special online assembly was held to celebrate Children's Day and Diwali on November 13 for the

entire school. The assembly started with teachers and children jointly singing the prayer Hum Ko

Mann Ki Shakti Dena. A video showing Anu Ma'am and a few teachers jointly reciting the poem

"Wishes" was shown to the children. The poem was full of lines bestowing lots of good wishes for

our children. Ms. Manjula spoke about Chacha Nehru and the significance of Children’s Day. To add

comedy and laughter to the show, few enthusiastic teachers had prepared two short skits, enacted

by them in the school auditorium and recorded for the occasion. The audience was taken through

memory lane and made nostalgic by presenting glimpses of the past few Children's Day assemblies

through video clippings. After a small talk on Diwali and reminding them to say ‘No to Crackers', 'Aayi

Diwali', a video launched by the school on YouTube in 2018 was played. The assembly ended with the

national anthem.

Page 29: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

CHRISTMAS ASSEMBLY 2020

A special online assembly was held on December 24 to celebrate Christmas. The underlying feeling of

the assembly was to celebrate Christmas and welcome the New Year as well as express gratitude for

the things that have worked for us this year, despite all the unprecedented turmoil and problems.

The assembly started with the prayer Amazing Grace sung by our students. The birth of Lord Christ

and other symbols related to Christmas celebrations like the Tree, Holly, and Santa Claus were

discussed. The carol 'Drummer Boy' sung by our school choir a few years back was played and

it brought in nostalgia for all. A lively

video titled 'The Christmas Fiesta'

showed our Class I students preparing

for the festival at home. Arun Sir spoke

about the school video titled ‘Silent

Night’, released the previous day on

YouTube. The assembly ended on an

exciting note with a song video prepared

especially for the children by the

teachers. The teachers sang and playfully

enacted out different scenes to match

the lyrics of the popular carol 'Santa

Claus is coming to Town'.

Page 30: CAMBRIDGE SCHOOL

Annual Report 2020-21 Pg 29

After the assembly, the teachers had organized Christmas

activities in their classes. A plethora of activities such as making

Santa caps, stockings, Christmas trees, doing non-fire cooking,

dancing, playing, and many more such fun activities were

organized for the children.
