CSUN HONORS CONVOCATION & UNIVERSITY HONORSThere are two different types of honors which you can receive from Cal State Northridge upon Graduation: University Honors and the CSUN Honors Convocation.

Criteria for Recognition at CSUN Honors Convocation:Each year California State University, Northridge recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate degree recipients by inviting them to participate in the Honors Convocation ceremony. Students meeting the established criteria will receive an official invitation to the ceremony from President Koester. In addition, each student will have his/her name and award included in a souvenir program, and will be invested with a Medallion at the Convocation ceremony.

Participation in the 2011 Honors Convocation is limited to undergraduate and graduate stu-dents who have received or are candidates for a degree in Fall 2010, Spring 2011 and Summer 2011. Students receiving a credential or certificate are not eligible for this recognition. Students may participate in Honors Convocation no more than one time for each undergraduate or graduate degree earned. Students become eligible for participation in Honors Convocation based on meeting one of the following criteria.

Scholastic Achievement – UndergraduateAll graduating seniors (Fall 2010, Spring 2011 and Summer 2011) with a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 or better as of Fall 2010 are eligible for recognition. Nominations from this category are provided by Admissions & Records if the student has applied for graduation before March 4, 2011. Late Graduation Filings will result in ineligibility for this category.

Scholastic Achievement – GraduateAll graduating graduate students (Fall 2010, Spring 2011 and Summer 2011) with a cumulative grade point average of 3.885 or better as of Fall 2010 are eligible for recognition. Nominations from this category are provided by Admissions & Records if the student has applied for gradua-tion before March 4, 2011. Late Graduation Filings will result in ineligibility for this category.

9

Personal AchievementAll graduating students (undergraduate and graduate degree recipients for Fall 2010, Spring 2011 and Summer 2011) who are recipients of department, college or University awards or scholarships recognizing a demonstration of excellence in art, creativity, athletics, display of leadership ability, or community service are eligible for recognition. Nominees must also posses a cumulative grade point average of 3.0 or better on all coursework through Fall 2010 and must have applied for graduation before the March 4, 2011 deadline. Late Graduation Filings will result in ineligibility for this category.

Additional information: Office of Student Development & International Programs, (818) 677-2393.

CRITERIA FOR GRADUATING WITH UNIVERSITY HONORS:To be awarded University Honors the University Catalog states:

To receive honors at graduation, an undergrad student must: • Completeaminimumof45unitsofworkinletter-gradedcoursesinthisUniversity. • Earnagradepointaverage(GPA)of3.50oraboveinallworktakenatCSUNand cumulatively (transfer and CSUN work).

The level of honors is based on the grade point average in all undergraduate courses, including transfer work (cumulative). Graduate Students who are not awarded with “University Honors” however are able to be recognized on their diploma as graduating “With Distinction” upon receiving a 3.885 GPA or higher within their graduate level courses.

The level of honors is determined as follows: • SummaCumLaude-GPAof3.90orabove • MagnaCumLaude-GPAof3.75to3.89 • CumLaude-GPAof3.50to3.74

If University Honors is awarded when the degree is granted, honors will be reflected on your diploma and your CSUN transcript.

Note: An invitation to attend the Honors Convocation Ceremony does not automatically guaran-tee University Honors eligibility.

10

Students with the appropriate Grade Point Average (GPA) and units when the Graduation Evaluation is completed will be an “Honors Candidate.” If you are designated as an “Honors Candidate”, this accomplishment is acknowledged as a separate listing in the Commencement Program. Additionally, an “Honors Candidate” is eligible to purchase the “University Hon-ors Medallion” (different than the medallion received at Honors Convocation) at the Bookstore, which is worn for the Commencement Ceremony. Candidacy for Honors does not guarantee Honors will be awarded when the degree is conferred. The same in reverse applies for students not designated as an “Honors Candidate”; Honors will be awarded if criteria are met when the degree is conferred.

Also, there will be live telecast rooms with live captioning at the Bianchi Planetarium and Nobbs Auditorium (Sequoia Hall).

For graduates with disabilities electing to march and be seated with their Colleges, ushers will be made available to assist them during the processional and recessional.

Graduating students with special needs during the graduation ceremony should contact the Commencement Coordinator at the office of SD & IP, and for additional information please call the Disability Resources and Education Services Office at (818) 677-2684.

DEAF AND HARD OF HEARING GRADUATES AND GUESTSInterpreting services for deaf and hard of hearing graduates and guests will be available in a reserved area at each site. DIPLOMASDiplomas are not issued at the Commencement Exercises. Graduates will receive their diplomas approximately three to six weeks following Commencement from Admissions and Records. A diploma cover will be given to each graduate on the day of the ceremony.

TASSEL CHANGEIn academic tradition, the student who has not yet earned a degree wears the tassel on the RIGHT side of the mortarboard. After President Koester has conferred the baccalaureate degrees, graduates will be directed to move the tassel to the LEFT.

Master’s candidates wear their tassel on the left to begin with and, therefore, do not move it during the ceremony.

VENDORSAs a convenience and service to our Commencement visitors, the University has contracts with a few select vendors to provide flower bouquets, cold drinks, snack items, and other sundries.

13

PRINTED PROGRAMSCommencement programs will be distributed individually to all graduates at the Commencement Ceremony. Programs will be distributed to guests as they are seated prior to the beginning of each ceremony. Due to the limited supply, a single program will be given to each family.

Those graduates who do not attend Commencement may visit the Office of Student Development during the week of June 6, 2011 to receive a printed program. Mail requests for programs cannot be honored.

Baccalaureate and Master’s candidate names are listed by College. Honors candidates will also be listed in a special section of the printed program. Note: Due to press deadlines, the printed program is not a definitive list of graduates. Further, some students have requested that their names not be published and, therefore, will not appear in the Commencement printed program.

RESTROOMS, TELEPHONES, WATERUshers will direct guests to restrooms, public telephones, water fountains, and other amenities.

USE OF CAMERAS AND VIDEO EQUIPMENTFor safety and security reasons, guests will NOT be permitted access to the stage area or graduate seating areas during the ceremony to photograph or video record the event. Please advise your guests to remain seated during the Commencement ceremony. The rules set forth by the Fire Marshal, who monitors our Commencement, do not allow for anyone to stand or block the aisles. Any person doing so will be removed. A special photo section is available adjacent to each side of the stage. See ushers for more information.

For your convenience, the University has arranged for Grad Images, (800) 424-3686 (www.gradimages.com) to shoot two different poses of each graduating student. Please follow the instructions that will be given to you at the Commencement site to insure an agreeable pose. A complimentary proof of each pose will be sent to you one to two weeks after Commencement through email correspondence. While the photographer appreciates advance orders, (with a money back guarantee), advance orders are not required to receive your complimentary proofs. A letter from the photographer will be sent to you in advance of Commencement with all pertinent information regarding this service.

EMERGENCIESPolice officers from the Department of Police Services and medical staff from the Student Health Center will be on duty during the Commencement exercises to provide first aid assistance in the event of any medical emergencies or illnesses. Police officers will provide the normal array of public safety services and both police officers and student Community Service Assistants in red and black uniforms are available to assist guests with lost members, directions and many other services. Note: that it will not be possible for any guest to be paged.

14

LOST AND FOUNDThe Department of Police Services maintains a centralized lost and found service for the Cal State Northridge community. In the event you lose an item during Commencement, a University police officer or community service assistant can direct you to Police Service Headquarters to file a lost report or check on lost property turned in to the Department of Police Services.

THE ACADEMIC DRESSThe traditional attire worn at Commencement Exercises had its beginnings in the Middle Ages when the university first developed as an institution of higher learning.

The most important centers of intellectual life in the 10th century were the monasteries, the segment of society least affected by the disorders of the time. The relative stability of the monastic life left monks free to develop systematic graded education for the first time in Western society. The first students were the monks and priests themselves, and the costumes they wore were more for protection from the elements than as a distinctive regalia for the scholarly way of life. Caps were a necessity in the cold drafty buildings, and capes and hoods were worn for warmth.

In later centuries, as the British universities passed from the control of the ecclesiastics, the costumes took on brighter colors, and the hood, a stole-like garment, was singled out as the item to be made distinctive for various degrees by color, trimming and lining.

The use of caps, gowns, and hoods has been continuous in the United States since Colonial times - the tradition having been transplanted from Oxford and Cambridge to the New World. However, the dress code was modified and vivid colors so prevalent in Great Britain were eliminated. Prior to 1895, faculty academic costumes varied widely from university to university. Since few people knew the distinguishing marks or colors for the various degrees, the dress code was standardized for all American universities. Students began a movement which would spread throughout the country to make academic regalia an integral part of the Commencement ceremony. A desire to make the festivities more impressive, as well as to add grace and dignity to the function, led to the success of this endeavor.

At California State University, Northridge, the baccalaureate candidates wear a wide-sleeved gown and the master’s candidates wear a gown with slit sleeves.

Both groups wear caps with colored tassels. The lining of the master’s hood matches the tassel color, which identifies the College in which the degree has been taken. All graduates must wear the required academic dress for their degree. Graduates not properly dressed will not be permitted to participate in the commencement ceremony.
