Your polo journey begins here!

Polo is one of the most ancient sports in the world, tracing its roots thousands of years back to Persia. Established in 1890, the Calgary Polo Club is the oldest

club in Canada. Each summer season, the club hosts local and international players, making it THE destination for polo in Western Canada.

We are keen to welcome visitors and guests to our outstanding facility, whether it is on the sidelines, on the field, or at an elegant event in the Ranch House. To get you up-to-speed on this high-speed sport and the polo lifestyle, here is your essential guide.

The peopleCalgary Polo is known internationally as an accessible and friendly club that caters to players and spectators alike. There are many social events throughout the year where visitors and guests can meet players, sponsors, members and other polo and equine enthusiasts. Social highlights for 2013 include the Wild Game Dinner, Stampede Dinner, Lobster Night, Italian Night, and the President’s Ball. See the schedule on page 19 for dates, and pictures of last year’s events starting on page 44.

The game Polo is played over 4 to 6 chukkers, or periods of play. There are 4 players per team. Games extend anywhere from 1 to 2 hours and promise to deliver heart-stopping action, inspiring horsemanship and impressive athleticism. For more information about the game see Polo at a Glance on page 25.

The poniesEach player brings their own “string” of ponies to the field. Ponies are largely thoroughbreds that have undergone years of professional training. Many ponies understand the game, and players often admit that their success on the field is up to 80% pony talent, 20% player determination. For a quick lesson in player and pony gear, see page 28.

The passionAlmost everyone who tries polo becomes addicted to the sport! The best place to begin your polo career is in the Calgary Polo & Riding Academy. After learning swing mechanics on the back of “Woody,” the wooden hitting cage mount, players hit the field to learn the game in a safe and friendly environment. Players range from 8 to 80 years old, and no experience is required to enroll! See page 23 for more information.

Contact our friendly staff (page 14) with any questions, or visit www.calgarypoloclub.com for more information about the sport of polo. We are keen to share details on tournaments, sponsorships, events, directions, the Calgary Polo & Riding Academy, and facility rentals.

The club boasts 200 acres of land with eight full-sized playing fields, an outdoor polo arena and a hitting cage. The elevated berm running along the Lilac, Ranch House and Centre fields is the perfect place for spectating and tailgating. Player positionsTeam strategies are closely linked to player positions on the field, as designated by numbers one to four displayed on team jerseys. Player One assumes offensive duties on the field and focuses on neutralizing the opposing team’s Player Four. Player Two is the mover and the shaker, a transition player who backs up Player One, and aggressively seeks to move the ball upfield. Player Three is the quarterback, focusing on game strategy, field advantage, and moving the ball. This player is often the highest rated player on the team. Finally, Player Four is primarily defense, responsible for guarding the goal.

Near-sidePlayers mount and dismount on the left-hand side of the horse. It is referred to as the near-side as it is the side nearest to the player as they get on and off their pony. When a player hits the ball on the left-hand side of the horse, it is referred to as a near-side front shot or a near-side back shot.

Off-sideThe right-hand side of the horse. A player can hit an off-side front shot or an off-side back shot on the right-hand side of the horse. All polo players must carry the mallet in their right hand; left-handed play is not allowed.

2 6

Ride-off (or bump)A defensive move in which two ponies and players make contact and “bump” shoulders. The objective of a ride-off is to prevent an opposing player from taking a shot or to drive the player off the “line of the ball.” Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the narrowest angle has the right of way, or “line.” Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty.

HookIn this defensive technique, a player uses his or her mallet to interfere with an opponent’s swing.

Neck ShotA player uses the flexibility of the bamboo mallet shaft to hit the ball under the horse’s neck.

2 7

ChukkerA period of play in polo. There are four chukkers in low-goal games and six chukkers in high-goal games in regulation outdoor polo. Each chukker is seven-and-a-half minutes long, and players have four minutes between each chukker to change horses. A half-time break takes place after the second or third chukker, allowing players to rest and prepare for the second half of the game.

Handicap (also, goal rating)A player’s handicap is a rating between -2 (or C) and 10. A rating committee decides the handicap of each player based on playing ability, horsemanship, team play, horses, and knowledge of the game. The handicap of a team is the sum total rating of all of its players, and the final score of a match is adjusted according to discrepancies in the two teams’ handicaps. North American players’ handicaps are updated and published by the United States Polo Association twice a year.

UmpireTwo mounted officials are on the field ensuring safety and enforcing rules. In case of disagreement, a sideline referee (called the Third Man) has the final say. Each infraction of the rules of play is given a rating between one and nine by the umpire, with the severity of the infraction determining the level of penalty awarded, and the placement and conditions of a free hit.

SideboardsA polo field is 300 yards long by 150 yards wide (slightly larger than nine football fields!). Sideboards, usually made of wood, run lengthwise down the sides of the fields, to help keep the ball in play. Players and ponies can be outside of the sideboards during the course of the game; play continues as long as the ball remains within the parameters of the polo field.

1 Bridle | A series of leather strapping, a metal or copper bit, and supports to provide the player control in maneuvering and stopping the pony.

2 Breastplate | Leather strapping that crosses the pony's chest and prevents the saddle from slipping backwards during the game.

3 Draw Reins | Attached to the bit and the saddle, these reins enhance control over the pony.

4 Girth | A leather and elastic strap that fits behind the pony’s front legs and secures on each side of the saddle to hold it securely in place.

5 Helmet | Hard-surfaced, cushioned protection for the player’s head from swinging mallets and racing polo balls. Face guards can be attached for extra protection.

6 Knee Pads | Protection for the player’s knees during play, especially during ride offs (or “bumping”).

7 Mallet | A flexible shaft and hardwood head, ranging in length from 49 to 54 inches, depending on the size of the horse. A player uses the side of the mallet head to hit the polo ball.

8 Martingale | A leather strap that runs from the girth to the bridle, under the pony’s neck, that helps to keep the pony’s head from rising too far upwards.

Player and Ponygear

9 Plaited Tail | Ponies’ tails are braided and secured to avoid getting tangled in mallets during the game.

10 Polo Ball | A polo ball is made of solid hard plastic and measures 3 to 3-1/2 inches in diameter.

11 Polo Bandages | Commonly referred to as “polo wraps,” these lower leg bandages support the pony’s legs and provide protection for tendons against contact with mallets, polo balls and other ponies’ legs.

12 Polo Pony | Thoroughbreds, or part thoroughbred and part quarter horse, are selected and trained for polo based on their agility, speed, endurance, and intelligence.

13 Roached Mane | Ponies’ manes are clipped to eliminate interference with players’ reins during the game.

14 Saddle | Fitted and secured closely to the horse’s back and withers, saddles are relatively flat and have little padding under the leg, allowing for maximum movement.

15 Stirrup Iron | A metal frame that holds the player’s foot. The irons are attached to each side of the saddle by a long strap of leather (the stirrup leather).

16 Tendon Boots | Protection for the pony’s legs from contact with other ponies, mallets, and the ball.

A lberta-born Fred H. Mannix is the highest rated Canadian polo player and the first Canadian in 65 years to compete in the Argentine Triple Crown, the most prestigious series of polo tournaments in the world. The Calgary Polo Club is thrilled to welcome Fred to its fields for the 2013 polo season, and recently caught up with him to

learn more about his exciting international career.

What are your fondest memories of growing up in polo? There was a great group of instructors at Eldorado Polo Club in California, and my father was really supportive and gave me some great ponies to play when I was young. I was very competitive and wanted to play against the big kids as soon as possible! When I was sixteen, I got to play for Canada in the Federation of International Polo World Cup Qualifier. We were the underdogs, but with great coaching and hard work, we beat the US team! I felt that we really earned the right to play in the World Cup Finals and it meant a lot for me to play for Canada.

Did you always aspire be an international polo player? My aspirations and perspective on the game definitely evolved. I remember playing with Jeff Hall in California when he got the call to play in Florida with Memo Gracida. I realized then that polo existed far beyond the fields of Eldorado and I set my sights on the bigger picture. I was lucky to get to play in Florida shortly after that, and in 2005, I was invited to play in Argentina. This opened my eyes to a whole new level of polo and I realized that Argentina was where I wanted to really establish myself.

Who have been your mentors in the sport? I would not be where I am without the help of so many players, friends and family. Julio Zavaleta played polo with my father for 17 years and he taught me some really important things about field tactics and sportsmanship. Joe Henderson taught me the mechanics of hitting the ball and helped me with game strategy. More recently, I have benefited from the advice of Clemente Zavaleta. He manages our string and breeding operation in Argentina and he understands my game so well: he helps me arrive to the field both mentally and physically ready to play.

What do you consider your greatest polo accomplishment so far? I qualified four times to play in the Argentine Open and this past season, I did not have to qualify in order to play. The Polo Association of Argentina raised my handicap to 8 goals, allowing me to play in the Open without having to play the qualifying tournaments. It was great to receive this recognition amongst the best players in the world.

What is the most challenging aspect of the sport for you? Being mounted to play at the highest level of the sport is very challenging. There are never any guarantees when it comes to your polo string; it is a combination of breeding, talent, training and care that allows a pony to reach its

full potential. I have made mistakes with ponies and I have come to appreciate how unique each pony is. Great ponies come in all shapes and sizes, but generally we aim to breed ponies that have great speed, stamina and agility. We also look towards temperament; the more calm and confident a horse is on the ground, the better it often performs in partnership with the player on the field.

What advice would you offer to other players in the sport? If you are a non-rider who is taking up the sport, spend as much time in the saddle as possible. Many beginners are so anxious to hit the ball, that they overlook the importance of proper riding skills. As for experienced riders coming to the sport, I suggest that they continually look for ways to improve their game. Stick and ball as much as possible and always seek out advice on your game and swing from professionals. Try to take something away from every practice session and game that you play.

Che Calgary Women’s Heart Cupan international affair

The Calgary Polo Club has hosted the Heart Cup Women’s Polo Tournament for the past several seasons, inviting both local and international

women to share in great summer polo. In 2012, a group of very special visitors participated in the Heart Cup: a team of four talented players from South Africa. South African players Amy Gace, Alida Vermaak, Kate Holmes, and Catherine Hartley joined more than 20 other Canadian and American women players, to make the 2012 Heart Cup a truly international affair!

Six teams competed over the course of the weekend tournament. In the A flight, the Coldwell Banker/Rocky Mountain Ranch, DC Bank, and Black Diamond teams battled for the cup. The Coldwell Banker team of Dayelle Fargey, Madelyn Cobb, Ruth Peters, and Catherine Hartley were victorious, with Madelyn Cobb also taking Best Playing Pony honours for Lemonicello, a pony owned by Dayelle Fargey. MVP in the A flight was awarded to Amy Gace and the Sportsmanship Award went to Cathy Butler.

The Shooting Edge, Identity and Pink Velvet teams took to the fields in the B flight, with The Shooting Edge team of Megan Kozminski, Eileen Duffy, Jessie Reeske, Delfina Abbiati, and Tiffany Burns narrowly taking the win. MVP in the B flight went to Tekarra’s Brittany Wise, Sportsmanship went to Emma Tooth, and the Best Playing Pony award was given to Flurry, played by Candice Crosby.

The weekend of women’s polo culminated in a match game between the visiting South African women’s team and Calgary amateur players Anne Evamy, Cathy Butler,

Ruth Peters, and Jessica Schneider. The strong talent of the South African team led them to a commanding victory, and the exciting game highlighted the unique camaraderie, sportsmanship, and competition that is distinct to women’s polo today.

In May of 2013, the Calgary women’s team headed to South Africa, keen to tour the region and experience polo graciously hosted by the South African team.

POLO – THE SPORT OF KINGSGrowing from its origins in Persia, polo is now an active sport in 77 countries. It is sometimes called “The Sport of Kings” as it was typically played only by nobility in early times. Its exclusivity was due in part to the expensive nature of the game, but its popularity continues to grow.

Polo was introduced in the Summer Olympics at the 1900 Games. It was contested in another four Olympiads before being removed after the 1936 Summer Olympics. Although polo was no longer included as an Olympic sport, in 1998 the International Olympic Committee recognized it as a sport with a bona fide international governing body, the Federation of International Polo, which holds the World Polo Championship every three years.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame has an amazing collection of artifacts and historical photographs of polo and many other sports. One outstanding artifact is the Grenfell Polo Challenge Cup, pictured here. The Cup is a copy of the Warwick Vase. It was presented by Mr. Arthur Grenfell of England’s Ranlagh Polo Grounds in 1910 to promote polo in Canada. It is emblematic of the Canadian Polo Championship, awarded annually from 1910 to 1939.

Previously located in Toronto, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame moved to Canada Olympic Park in Calgary, Alberta in 2011. The award winning 40,000 square foot facility features 12 galleries and over 50

hands-on interactive exhibits. A visit to Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame is to view, feel, hear and experience Honoured Members’ magical moments, images, celebrations and treasured artifacts.

Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame offers a unique opportunity for corporate retreats. Using the stories of our Honoured Members, we can tailor specific messaging to fit your organizations objectives, such as Leadership, Alignment or Innovation. Book today at (403)776.1081

Each year, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame inducts a new class of athletes and builders whose stories of dedication, heartbreak, grace, triumph and glory, have inspired Canadians of all ages.

If you would like to nominate a polo player, other athlete or sport builder, we encourage you to submit your nomination for the Class of 2014 at www.sportshall.ca.
