Welcome to all new and returning members, players, social members, visitors, and spectators to the Calgary Polo Club. We appreciate all of the supporters who help to make the “Sport of Kings” a success in Alberta.

We are grateful for the ongoing support of many generous sponsors for the 2012 season, including: After Eight Interiors, Bonnett’s Energy Services, Big Rock Brewery Ltd., Royal Bank of Canada – RBC, Strategy Partners Inc., Triangle Steel Ltd., Gordon W. Ross Remax, and Veuve Clicquot-Terrazas de los Andes.

The Executive is proudly made up of several returning members: Anne Evamy, President; Rob Foster, Secretary; Pat Powell, Director; John Rooney, Chairman of the Board; and Cam Clark, Past President. We welcome two new board members, Social Director Richard Cote and Treasurer Bill Lloyd.

During the 2012 season, we are pleased to host three annual invitational tournaments: the Western Canadian Women’s Heart Cup Invitational and the J.C. Palmer Memorial Invitational tournament in July, and the Kimo Cup Invitational tournament in August. See the schedule on page 17 for all of this season’s tournaments and social events.

The Calgary Polo Club is offering a range of polo this season, including Junior Polo, Chukker League, 5-Goal League, invitational weekend tournaments, and international-calibre high-goal match games. The Ranch House continues to offer social members, players, and visitors the opportunity to take in polo from its fantastic location at centre field, while enjoying a range of great food and wine events. We are pleased to welcome the Ranchmen’s Club back as the official caterer at the Ranch House. For more information on polo scheduling and Ranch House events, please visit the Calgary Polo Club website at www.calgarypoloclub.com.

Our Polo Manager, Rob Roenisch, is back, bringing years of polo management experience to the Calgary Polo Club. Sue Bird continues as the Events/Marketing Manager, and Tim Mills as Facilities Manager. Kyle Fargey returns as Director of the Calgary Polo & Riding Academy, providing individual and group lessons, and special clinics for the next generation of Calgary Polo: our junior, beginner, and intermediate players.

Good luck to all players and teams during the 2012 polo season at the beautiful Calgary Polo Club—we look forward to seeing you field-side!

Sincerely, The Calgary Polo Club Board of Directors

welcome to the calgary polo club

Established in 1890, the Calgary Polo Club is the oldest club in Canada. The club’s legacy is a testimonial to the dedication and

strength of the local polo community, and to the multitude of opportunities the club offers to its members and spectators.

The staff and members of the Calgary Polo Club welcome all to come and partake in the sport of polo. Whether it is on the sidelines, on the field, or at an elegant event in the Ranch House, the Calgary Polo magazine is your guide and invitation to be a part of the greatest game on earth.

learning the game

Your polo journey begins here! Before you hit the field or the sidelines, learn about the rules and lingo in Polo Basics (p. 24), study the ponies’ and players’ equipment in Polo Gear (p. 26), and understand more about Calgary players in Player Profiles (p. 29). If you are interested in learning the Sport of Kings, or starting your polo career with some riding lessons, then the Calgary Polo & Riding Academy will get you in the game (p. 27).

The Calgary Polo Club hosts league and tournament play every weekend, starting June 22. Spectators are welcome to attend games free of charge. For a list of tournament dates, consult the Tournament & Event Schedule (p. 17).

the Facilities

Located 10 minutes south of Calgary and 10 minutes northwest of Okotoks, the club boasts 200 acres of land with 8 full-sized playing fields, an outdoor polo arena and a hitting cage (p. 21). The Calgary Polo Club Ranch House hosts regular club functions and is also available for private events (p. 65), and the Cantina is a great place to hang your hat for a casual BBQ at the end of the day. The berm running along the Lilac, Ranch House and Centre Fields is the perfect place for spectating, or pull your vehicle up to the field (keeping a safe distance back!) for a tailgating event and a close-up view of the game.

the people

Calgary Polo is known internationally as an accessible and friendly club that caters to all levels of players and participants. There are many social events every season where you can meet the players and other polo and equine enthusiasts who make the club their summer destination. Social highlights this season include the Wild Game Dinner, Stampede Dinner, Lobster Night, Italian Night, and the President’s Ball (p. 17).

Contact our friendly staff (p. 20) with any questions, or visit calgarypoloclub.com for more information on tournaments, sponsorships, events, results, directions, the Calgary Polo & Riding Academy, and facility rentals.

polo basic s

Polo is a fast-paced sport played on a field that spans the same surface area as nine football fields. Playtime is divided into 7½ minute chukkers, and after each

goal, the teams switch ends to equalize game conditions. The players and their horses are exhilarating to watch, but it is even better when you can follow the plays of the game. This guide introduces the terms you will need to speak the language of polo.

terms

divot stomp: Spectator participation! During half time, spectators are invited onto the field to replace pieces of turf dug up by the horses during play, so that the ball travels smoothly down the field.

flagman: the designated person standing at each end behind the goal posts who flags each

successful goal “in” by waving the flag up high or

“out” by waving the flag below the waist.

foul: any infraction of the USPA rules, ranging

from dangerous riding to interrupting the line

of the ball.

handicap (also, goal rating): a player’s handicap

is a rating between -2 (or C) and 10. A rating

committee decides the handicap of each player

based on playing ability, horsemanship, team

play, horses, and knowledge of the game. The

handicap of a team is the sum total rating of all

of its players, and the final score of a match is

adjusted according to discrepancies in the two

teams’ handicaps.

hook: a defensive technique in which a player

uses his or her mallet to interfere with an

opponent’s swing.

knock-in: when a team in an offensive drive hits the ball across the opponent’s back line, the defending team resumes play with a free hit from their back line.

line of the ball: Once a ball is hit, the player who is closest to the ball with the lesser angle has the right of way. Opposing players cannot cross the line too closely to the player who has the right of way, nor can they approach the “on line” player at too sharp an angle, or they risk a foul and subsequent penalty.

near-side: the left-hand side of the horse, where players mount.

neck shot: the player uses the flexibility of the bamboo mallet shaft to hit the ball under the horse’s neck.

off-side: the right-hand side of the horse.

hook

ride-off

Page 25: Calgary Polo 2012

c a lg a ry p o lo m ag a z in e 2 012 25

out of bounds: whenever the ball is outside of the outer perimeter of the field. The ball returns to play when the Umpire bowls the ball in from near to where it exited.

penalty: a free hit is awarded when a foul is committed. Each infraction of the rules of play is given a rating between one and nine by the umpire, with the severity of the infraction determining the level of penalty awarded, and the placement and conditions of the free hit.

player positions: Player positions are represent-ed by the numbers on their polo jerseys (from one to four). The Number One player primarily assumes an offensive position on the field and is responsible for neutralizing the opposing team’s

Number Four player (their primary defense).

The Number Two is the mover and the shaker,

a transition player who backs up the Number

One player, and aggressively seeks to move the

ball upfield. The Number Three player is the

quarterback, who focuses on game strategy, field

advantage and moving the ball. This player is

often the highest rated player on the team.

Finally, player Number Four is primarily

responsible for guarding the goal, and prevent-

ing the opposing team from scoring.

polo pony: thoroughbreds, or part thoroughbred

and part quarter horse, selected for their agility,

speed, endurance, and intelligence.

referee (also, third Man): if the two Umpires

on the field disagree on a call, the Referee on the

sidelines has the final say.

ride-off (also, bump): a defensive move in which

two ponies make contact and press against

each other to prevent the opposite player from

taking a shot or to drive the player off the line

of the ball.

tailgaiting: a great polo pastime where you drive

your vehicle to the edge of the field and break out

lawn chairs, cold drinks, and delicious snacks to

enhance your polo-watching experience.

umpire: two mounted officials are on the field

ensuring safety and enforcing rules.

usPa: The United States Polo Association is the

governing body of polo in North America. Origi-

nally founded in 1890, the USPA is responsible

for sanctioning polo clubs and tournaments,

managing and publishing rules and handicap

ratings, and organizing, promoting, and sup-

porting polo across North America.

1 Polo Mallet: Polo mallets have bamboo or plastic

shafts that are flexible and can make a complete arc

under the pony’s neck or tail. The side of the hard

wood head is used to hit the ball.

2 helMet: Hard, lined helmets protect players’ heads

from swinging mallets and balls travelling at speeds

up to 100 mph.

3 saddle: Relatively flat, polo saddles have little

padding under the leg, allowing for maximum

movement.

4 Plaited tail: Polo ponies have plaited tails so they

don’t get tangled in the action around them.

5 Bell Boot: These protect the pony’s front heels from

contact with the back hooves.

6 Bandages: These protective wraps shield the pony’s

legs against contact with the ball or other ponies.

7 riding Boots: Brown or black leather polo boots

provide protection for the player’s lower leg.

8 knee Pads: Protection for the player’s knees.

9 Breast Plate: This leather strap prevents the saddle

from slipping back during the game.

10 Polo Martingale: This leather strapping prevents

the pony’s head from rising.

11 girth: This leather and elastic strapping fits behind

ponies’ front legs and secures on each side of the

saddle to hold it securely in place.

12 Bridle: This series of leather strapping, metal

bit, and supports gives the player steering and

stopping control.

13 Mane: Polo pony’s manes are clipped to eliminate

interference with the player’s reins.

how did you get started in polo? My dad and brother both play; they got me started when I was young.

What do you love about the sport? I love the speed of the game and the coordination it requires between horse and rider.

What is your most memorable game or win? Playing with Alegria and winning the 20 Goal Metro Mediano Final in Palermo, Argentina.

Who is your favourite pony? Waikiki is the best horse that I have ever played. We got her from Carlos Galindo in California when she was young, and she has risen through the ranks to play in the Argentine Open. She plays like a cat: she’s just unbelievable.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Try and try again. Don’t get too frustrated with the challenges of the game. And have fun!

how did you get started in polo? I started in the Polo School more than 20 years ago.

What do you love about the sport? The mental clarity required to play is unmatched in almost any other sport.

What is your most memorable game or win? Winning the 20 Goal Canadian Open at the Calgary Polo Club.

Who is your favourite pony? My favourite mare was Replay: she had everything you could dream of in a polo pony. She passed away, but I have her filly, Replicate, who I hope will be just as special as Replay was.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Think about the game when you are on the field. It’s as mentally challenging as it is physically, and you need to play smart, no matter what level.

how did you get started in polo? I was a member of pony club as a kid and played high-level field hockey. When I saw my first game of polo in 1981, I knew I needed to play this game as it combined both sports. I tried hitting a ball off a wooden horse in 1992, played my first chukker in 1995 and was hooked! David Bissett was the catalyst for my polo career—so I have him to thank!

What do you love about the sport? Horses, adrenaline, speed, competition, and hitting a little white ball, full speed on horseback.

What is your most memorable game or win? Winning the 2010 Mountbatten Plate at the Calgary Polo Club: I scored six goals in one game! In 2010, I also played my first 14 Goal Match Game on the immaculate fields at Chinook Downs, which is a great memory.

Who is your favourite pony? Marcella, a chestnut mare who is full of character and heart. She is always ready to give me her all; she is quick, handy, and speedy and loves to play. I feel like we flow together every time that I play her. I wish I had a whole string of ponies just like her.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Dive in and enjoy. You won’t regret it!

how did you get started in polo? I used to race chuckwagons. About one year after I quit racing, I started to miss the thrill of competition and the horses, so I decided to try polo. That was three years ago, and I am really enjoying the game.

What do you love about the sport? The best ponies give everything they have in the game.

What is your most memorable game or win? Winning the 2011 Governor’s Cup at Eldorado Polo Club in California with Kyle Fargey, Alvaro Tadeo, and Patrick Uretz.

Who is your favourite pony? Marty, because he is more horse than any cowboy I know has.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Get good training and the best horses that you can afford—it makes the game far more enjoyable.

how did you get started in polo? I bought a Team Canada polo jersey while I was on vacation in Buenos Aires. I got home and looked up polo in Canada on the Internet, and the Calgary Polo club came up. I sent an email to Kyle Fargey, the Director of the Polo & Riding Academy, and set up my first lesson.

What do you love about the sport? It’s a total team sport, not only with the players but with the horses. It is an adrenaline rush every time you play a chukker!

What is your most memorable game or win? Winning the Big Rock Tournament at the Calgary Polo Club in my first year of tournament play. It is the tournament that I most look forward to each year.

Who is your favourite pony? I have a few but the one that stands out is LaCruisa who is a 12-year old Argentine thoroughbred. She is handy and quick enough to get me into plays.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Come out and give it a try! The Calgary Polo club offers a unique opportunity to come out and try polo at a world-class facility with a highly qualified polo instructor—Kyle Fargey has an amazing track record of getting new players the skills and knowledge required to start playing.

how did you get started in polo? I was first interested in polo in the early 1990s, but with a mortgage and two kids, I had to put it on hold. In 2000, my father-in-law, Rob Peters, suggested I try polo. It sounded like fun except one thing: I had never sat on a horse. Fortunately, courage overrode smarts, and off I went!

What do you love about the sport? I have had the good fortune to play many sports at a competitive level. The great thing about polo is that it is the hardest sport I have ever played, the worst thing about polo is that it is the hardest sport I have ever played. It is very challenging to become a good player, but I love the horses, the people, and the competition.

What is your most memorable game or win? Beating my ex-wife in the finals a couple of years ago!

Who is your favourite pony? Dalton, my steadfast horse, plays polo, goes on trail rides in the early season, and goes on hunts in the late season. Unfortunately, he is getting close to retirement, and I will eventually lose him as a good friend.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Sign up for lessons and get playing! You will never regret your decision.

What do you love about the sport? The horses and galloping green acres.

What is your most memorable game or win? I don’t think I have ever won a game.

Who is your favourite pony? Bolera is smart, safe, fast, and good at every aspect of the game. I can also take her out on trails or go jumping.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? Don’t quit your day job.

how did you get started in polo? Six years ago, Cathy Butler took me out to ride her polo ponies. I watched a high goal match at the Calgary Polo Club and fell in love with the game. After Kyle Fargey coached me for several years, I started playing in Coaching League, progressed to 4 Goal, and eventually 8 Goal.

What do you love about the sport? Riding a thoroughbred full gallop while having another player challenging you as you try to move the ball down the field to score! I love learning to work with the unique personality of each horse. The social aspect of polo is also fun—I have made many great friends.

What is your most memorable game or win? The 2010 Canadian Open, playing on the Cam Clark Team.

Who is your favourite pony? Jappa gives me everything I expect from her on the field. She is fast, strong, handy, and loves the game.

What is your advice to new players in the sport? It’s very important to stick and ball, so you can apply those skills to your game. Try to learn something new every time you ride, and don’t be scared to ask pros or more experienced players questions.

women’s tournament

In July of each year, women polo players from across the U.S. and Canada pack their polo gear and head to Calgary for the annual Women’s Heart Cup Tournament. The

majestic Canadian Rocky Mountains to the west and lush verdant hills all around the Calgary Polo Club make visiting players describe it as one of the most scenic clubs in North America, and as a destination that has a lot of fun things to do outside of polo.

The Calgary Polo Club has a well-earned reputation for organizing one of the most popular women’s tournaments in North America. Eight grass fields, two clubhouses, a sprawling 200-acre location, and beautiful views in all

directions give the club an edge in offering an outstanding polo experience for women players of all levels.

Ten women’s teams competed in the 2011 tournament with visiting players from Texas, California, Oregon, Florida, and Argentina.

Friday’s games were fast and scores were close. At the end of the day, the Rocky Mountain Pools team of Hale, Garsed, Butler, and Schindel and the Cam Clark Ford team of Fargey, Riggs, Dalton, and Peters qualified for the A-Flight Sunday final; with the Omega Risk Management and Identity Angels paired for the Consolation final. The B- and C-Flight games were round-robins that continued into the finals on Sunday. The sidelines were filled with players and spectators, and most stayed all day to watch the games.

On Friday night, Fred P. Mannix hosted all of the visiting WCT players at the Stampede Dinner at

the Calgary Polo Club Ranch House. The ladies pulled on their cowboy boots and dusted off their hats for a night of Wild West fun. Over 150 members and friends attended the dinner that featured a 9-goal polo match, cocktails on the Ranch House patio, and a traditional Stampede-style dinner.

On Saturday, the ladies had the day off to explore Calgary and to enjoy a couple of distinctively frontier-style events, including a stop at The Shooting Edge where James R. Cox, a social member of the club and student at the Polo Academy, hosted a morning of shooting for the Heart Cup participants. That evening, Cam Clark hosted a Calgary Stampede BBQ and chuckwagon races, where the ladies met Kirk Sutherland, professional chuckwagon driver of the Calgary Polo Club, Polo Canada, and PTF wagon.

Sunday morning saw a calm, sunny day, making it a perfect day for polo finals.

In the A-Flight finals, Cam Clark Ford started out strong, scoring four goals in the first chukker to take an early lead. They continued to run and score, taking them to a four-point lead at the end of the second chukker. Dayelle Fargey was on fire, scoring four goals in the first half of the game for Cam Clark Ford. Teammate Ruth Peters scored two goals in the first half of the game and Abby Riggs added one, taking the total to 7–3 going into halftime. Rocky Mountain Pools recharged their batteries during halftime, closing the gap with three back-to-back goals by Sunny Hale, and one by Kim Garsed. The score was 8–7 heading into the fourth and final chukker. Cam Clark Ford wasn’t willing to give up their lead and continued to ride hard, adding two more goals by Fargey and Riggs. Hale rallied and answered with one more goal for Rocky Mountain Pools, but it wasn’t enough. Cam Clark Ford won the match 10–8. Best Playing Pony was awarded to Nicaragua, owned by Dayelle Fargey and played by Abby Riggs. MVP was awarded to

Kim Garsed and the Sportsmanship award went to Cheryl Schindel.

In other action, Pemoco Nesbitt Burns won the B-Flight finals in a round robin against Tekarra and The Shooting Edge. Best Playing Pony was awarded to Ruby, owned by Shannon Peters. The MVP of the B Flight was Tiamo Hudspeth and the Sportsmanship Award went to Tia Sutherland.

In the final game of the day, Pink Velvet won the C-Flight finals in a round robin against Poise Publications and Chukkers. MVP was presented to Candice Crosby, and the Sportsmanship Award went to Tasha Ellison.

The games were followed by dinner and a ceremony for the Spirit Award, which was founded in 2010 by Deb Wolstenholme. This award is given to one of the participating players in the tournament who exhibits a special “polo spirit.” Judges Sunny Hale, Kristy Outhier, and

Natasha Baescher unanimously agreed on the 2011 recipient of the award: Anne Evamy.

The founder of the Women’s Championship Tournament, Sunny Hale, had great things to say about the 2011 Heart Cup WCT Qualifier in Calgary: “This year’s Calgary women’s tournament was an absolute blast. From the Calgary Stampede, and polo, to taking up practice at the shooting range, touring the more than 75 head of Stampede broncs in their mountaintop pasture, and enjoying dinner parties and new friends we met along the way. One of my favourite memories on the trip was sharing a chat with one of the great polo supporters of our time, Fred P. Mannix, as he mounted up and got prepared to umpire a women’s tournament match—yes, umpire! A huge thanks to all of our hosts in Calgary for a great tournament that absolutely represents the concept of what I have been promoting in WCT polo—great competition and fun.”

club le ague

The Club League at the Calgary Polo Club is a fun and competitive low-goal league for A- or B-rated players. You can drop in for a weekend tournament or participate throughout the season! Many of the current players in the Calgary Club League are alumni of the Calgary Polo & Riding Academy. Having gained experience in

lessons and Coaching League, these players are now looking to compete in safe and fun low-goal polo. Each team brings, or is assigned, a professional player who transitions plays, moves the ball, and helps club league players with their game.
