COMMODORE’S COMMENTS

The weather so far this spring has been crazy. Westill have patches of snow on the ground in Cedarburg... and that is on the south side of the house. Despitethe fact that snow is still in the forecast, the time hascome to uncover the boat. This way we can at leastpretend spring has sprung.

Milwaukee Harbor Yacht Club hosted anoutstanding seminar this past weekend at SSYC titled“Suddenly in Command.” The presentation walked theaudience through how to prepare for a situation wherethe Captain is unable to continue due to injury, fallingoverboard or some other problem. The core messagewas … develop a checklist and practice that checklistat least monthly. Having a process in place allows thecrew to keep thinking and not panic. The presenterstressed knowing your position is critical when callingfor help. Be sure your crew knows how to operate theVHF radio and how to describe where you are locatedusing specific landmarks or better yet, the GPScoordinates.

A big thanks goes out to Joe and Peggy Miotke fororganizing the March Monday Madness at Alioto’s.We had a great turnout for drinks and dinner.

Our March meeting was fun. Everyone brought theirfavorite beer. We had a wide variety available tosample. Mary Berg brought a real treat from Japan thathas an interesting history. Next time you see Mary, askher to tell you the story.

Our next meeting will be Friday May 11 during ourannual Shove-Off-Spree at the Seven Seas in Pewaukee.If you have not done so already, please be sure sendyour RSVP to Connie Heyden. Maybe by the time weget to the Seven Seas, we will no longer need to pretendthat spring has arrived.

MINUTES OF THE MARCH 22, 2018 MEETINGOF MILWAUKEE BOAT

CLUB

The March 22, 2018meeting of MilwaukeeBoat Club was called toorder by CommodoreScott Burke at theWauwatosa Lions’ Clubat 6:30 p.m.

There were 21 members in attendance.The minutes of the last meeting were

approved as published in the newsletter.Commodore’s Report: The CPR training that

was scheduled was cancelled. Instead, Scottannounced that we would be having a “BeerTasting” with members sampling various beersbrought in. Scott thanked Joe and Peggy Miotkefor hosting the previous month’s MondayMadness at Alioto’s. He reviewed the weatherseminar that had been recently held at SSYC.He also reiterated that the club is in need of anadvertising chairperson to take over from PeteMerryfield. Lynda Nelson graciously volunteeredto take over this position. Scott went overupcoming events: the Fox & Hounds on April 4and Monday Madness on Tuesday April 24 atParkside Pizza in Pewaukee. Finally, hereminded members that the next time we wouldhave an MBC meeting at the Lions’ Club wouldnot be until November.

Vice Commodore George Graubnerreminded members about the wine tasting atSSYC on Saturday, April 14.

Senior Pilot Connie Heyden reported that theShove Off Spree will be held on May 11 at theSeven Seas Restaurant.

Purser Dave Schneckenberg gave hisreport.

Past Commodore Mary Berg reported thatwe have been unable to schedule a CPR coursewith the Wauwatosa Fire Department.

Membership: Bonnie Merryfield will officiallyresign as Director of Membership following theShove-Off-Spree. Someone needs to step up tothe plate and take over this important position.Tom Rach is definitely NOT taking over asDirector of Membership.

Old Business: There was discussion aboutour new meeting start time and all agreed that6:30 was working well. Also, membersdiscussed the closing of the YerkesObservatory.

New Business: Dick Schmidt mentioned thatMBC meetings interfere with SSYC meetingstwice a year. Scott said the agenda is set forthis year and an adjustment was made in the2018 calendar to account for the SSYC conflict.We will revisit this topic next year during theJanuary planning session. In addition, Scottmentioned that the MBC burgee at SSYC is oldand faded and asked if anyone would object tohim replacing it. There was no objection. TomMcElwee brought up the issue of bringing innew members, and there was discussion aboutways to increase membership.

Meeting was adjourned at 7:10 p.m.

Swab . . . mop upFrom the Middle Dutch swabbe (mop), the

word was used in the late 16th century inreference to sailors who cleaned the decks.Swabbie came into general usage during themid-19th century after it was used by HermanMelville in his novel White Jacket. Both"swab"and "swabbie" have become popularterms for sailors, particularly those in the U.S.Navy.

Sun is Over the Yardarm . . .time for happyhour to begin

This expression is thought to have had itsorigins in an officers' custom aboard ships sailingin the North Atlantic. In those latitudes, the sunwould rise above the upper yards -- the horizontalspars mounted on the masts, from which squaresails were hung -- around 11:00 A.M. Since thiscoincided with the forenoon "stand easy", officerswould take advantage of the break to go belowfor their first tot of spirits for the day. Theexpression washed ashore where the sunappears over the figurative yardarm a bit later inthe day, generally after 5 P.M. and the end of theworkday.

FUEL SYSTEM● Inspect hoses, connections and tank surfaces for leaks

or damage● Replace components as needed● Verify all fittings and clamps are properly secured● Ensure the engine, exhaust, and ventilation systems

are functioning properlyBELTS, CABLES & HOSES

● Check for cracks and brittle areas● Ensure belts fit tightly and are not worn● Inspect the outer jacket of control cables for● cracks or swells, which may indicate a problem

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM● Inspect all electrical connections for● cleanliness and tightness; corrosion may indicate an

unsafe condition● Remove terminals and clean with a wire bush;● Clean cable ends● Change battery and ensure it can hold a charge● Electrical systems should be inspected by a qualified
