OCTOBER 28th – NOVEMBER 1st FALL BREAK NO SCHOOL
BREAKFAST IN THE CLASSROOM
Did you know your child’s school offers Breakfast In The Classroom? No, well it does! All children are eligible to receive a nutritionally well balanced breakfast for free, regardless of income level. Maybe you are asking yourself why should my child eat breakfast at school? According to the School Nutrition Foundation, children who eat breakfast at school have higher math and reading scores, sharper memories, broader vocabularies, and do better on standardized tests. Not convinced yet? They also focus and behave better, are less likely to be absent, see the school nurse, or to be overweight. We think Breakfast In The Classroom rocks, and want you to be a part of this “rockin” opportunity! Please contact your school Nutrition Services Cafeteria Manager with any questions.
EXCITING NEWS FROM ART
The Boston K-8 art department has a new website at www.bostonk8art.weebly.com. You can find updates on art displays, information about art club, and a little of information about your child’s art teacher, Mrs. No-lasco. The old site may still be found at bostonk8art.wordpress.com.
Proficient and Advanced artwork has been getting hung up around the school during the month of September. The artwork changes periodically, so please check with Mrs. Nolasco if you are curious where your child might have artwork displayed. Sometimes, due to space con-straints, there is not enough room to display all projects from all art classes at all times, but we try to get a variety of works on display. Displays will also be photographed and included on the “student artwork” section of the bostonk8art website!
Lastly, the art department at Boston would like to con-gratulate the following students on having their artworks selected for entry into the city of Aurora America’s Prom-ise calendar contest: Shamira Sierra, Kevin Martinez, Christen Estell, Aislynn Adams, Daisy-Aracely Valenzu-ela, and Kamaria Portis. Good luck to these students as their artworks move on to further judging!
SECOND GRADE VISITS THE BOTANICAL GARDENS
Second grade had a great time on our first field trip at the Botanical Gardens on Tuesday, September 24th. We have been studying plants in Science and were able to extend our learning by attending the Plant Discovery Days at the gardens. We had so many parent volunteers to explore the gardens with our students. Thank you so much! It was a wonderful opportunity to spend time with our spectacular second graders and parents in a fun and educational environment.
INFORMATION FROM THE PARENT COFFEE
At the last Parent Coffee Mrs. TJ shared the Title I Parent/School Compact and Policy. The Title I School Compact is a contract between the teacher, parent and students to support one another with the success of our students. The Title I School Compact will be shared at the up-coming parent conference nights. If you have any questions about the Title I Compact or Policy please stop on by. See you at the next parent coffee on October 18th from 8:00 a.m. - 9:30 a.m.
DENTAL SCREENING FOR KINDERGARDEN AND FIRST GRADE
Thank you for your assistance with the dental screening at Boston K-8 last week. We screened 50 kindergarten students and 53 first grade students. In kinder, 22% of students were referred for additional dental care and 36% of those were considered urgent for abscess, pain and/or rampant decay. In first grade 23% were referred for additional dental care and 25% were considered urgent for abscess, pain and/or rampant decay.
Total students included 44 boys and 59 girls.
All students received a toothbrush and a letter home detailing the results of the screening.
SKATE CITY NIGHT
Thank you to all the students, parents and Boston staff members who came out to sup-port our school. We had 155 skaters in at-tendance that evening at Skate City. Since we had such a great turnout for the first evening event, I will be requesting a third bus for the next night. Please remember that all forms and money are due the Thursday before Skate City night. This way I can make sure to have space for everyone.
Once again “Thank you all for your support”
BOSTON HEALTH NEWS
October CountThank you to all of our students and families for supporting Boston K-8 with October count. Our school funding is based on student enrollment and attendance during the first week of October. It was very important for our school to count your child present on October 1.
We realize that circumstances happen that might have prevented your child from attending school on October 1. Before we can officially count a student who has been absent however, we must have a proper excuse. You can help us count your student if he/she was absent by sending the proper excuse and documentation. State regulations allow us to count students as enrolled, if their absence is officially excused with a note that is turned into the school.
We encourage good attendance all year, but the first full week in Oc-tober is especially important. Having your child in school every day will be very helpful for him/her and our whole school district.
October Is Walk/Bike To School Month!Fall is here and October is the international walk to school in the USA month. Encourage your child to walk or ride their bike to school to incorporate more exercise in their daily routine. Boston has joined the program! Let’s work together to become healthier! October 9th we will be celebrating the international walk to school day!
The first-ever National Bike to School Day took place on May 9, 2012, in coordination with the League of American Bicyclists’ National Bike Month. Almost 1,000 local events in 49 states and the District of Columbia joined together to encourage children to safely bicycle or walk to school.
The event builds on the popularity of Walk to School Day, which is celebrated across the country – and the world – each October. Many communities and schools have been holding spring walk and bicycle to school events for years. National Bike to School Day provides an opportunity for schools across the country to join together to celebrate this month.
Vision & Hearing Screening October 18We will have a school wide vision and hearing screening on Friday, October 18th. Students will also have their weight and height measured in order for us to calculate each child’s BMI. If your child wears glasses, please help us by making sure your child wears them the day of the screening. Please help us by making sure that your child comes to school to be screened.
BOSTON HEALTH NEWS (continued)
Here are some exercises and activities to build strong muscles:• push-ups• pull-ups• tug-of-war• rowing• running• inlineskating• bikeriding
Exercise Keeps the BalanceFood gives your body fuel in the form of calories, which are a kind of energy. Your body needs a certain amount of calories every day just to function, breathe, walk around, and do all the basic stuff. But if you’re active, your body needs an extra measure of calories or energy. If you’re not very active, your body won’t need as many calories.
Whatever your calorie need is, if you eat enough to meet that need, your body weight will stay about the same. If you eat more calories than your body needs, it may be stored as excess fat.
Exercise Makes You Feel GoodIt feels good to have a strong, flexible body that can do all the activities you enjoy — like running, jumping, and playing with your friends. It’s also fun to be good at something, like scoring a basket, hitting a home run, or perfecting a dive.
But you may not know that exercising can actually put you in a better mood. When you exercise, your brain releases a chemical called endorphins (say: en-DOR-funz), which may make you feel happier. It’s just another reason why exercise is cool!
Cooking Matters for FamiliesBoston K-8 will have a cooking matters course for parents and their children (8-12 years of age) on Tuesday’s from 3:15-5:15pm on October 15, 22 and November 5, 19, 26. This is a free course that you must sign up for because space is limited. You are expected to come to every class in order to participate. You will learn to identify and prepare healthy food options, will have hands on food preparation and will learn how to properly have a balanced diet. The class will be taught by professional chefs and nutritionists. You will receive free groceries, prepare and enjoy food as a class, and receive information and advice on food stamp benefits. If you have not signed up for the class please fill out the attached Cooking Matters form or contact Mrs. Aguilar at (303) 364-6878.
Why Exercise Is CoolKids exercise all the time without even thinking of it. Just being active, like when you run around outside or play kickball at school, is a kind of exer-cise. What else counts as exercise? Playing sports, dancing, doing push-ups, and even reaching down to touch your toes.
When you exercise, you’re helping build a strong body that will be able to move around and do all the stuff you need it to do. Try to be active every day and your body will thank you later!
Exercise Makes Your Heart HappyYou may know that your heart is a muscle. It works hard, pumping blood every day of your life. You can help this important muscle get stronger by doing aerobic (say: air-OH-bik) exercise.
Aerobic means “with air,” so aerobic exercise is a kind of activity that requires oxygen. When you breathe, you take in oxygen, and, if you’re doing aerobic exercise, you may notice you’re breathing faster than normal. Aerobic activity can get your heart pumping, make you sweaty, and quicken your breathing.
When you give your heart this kind of workout on a regular basis, your heart will get even better at its main job — delivering oxygen (in the form of oxygen-carrying blood cells) to all parts of your body.
So you want to do some aerobic exercise right now? Try swimming, basketball, ice or roller hockey, jog-ging (or walking quickly), inline skating, soccer, cross-country skiing, biking, or rowing. And don’t forget that skipping, jumping rope, and playing hopscotch are aerobic activities, too!
Exercise Strengthens MusclesAnother kind of exercise can help make your muscles stronger. Did you ever do a push-up or swing across the monkey bars at the playground? Those are exercises that can build strength. By using your muscles to do powerful things, you can make them stronger. For older teens and adults, this kind of workout can make muscles bigger, too.

BOSTON HEALTH NEWS (continued)
